About a year ago, I blogged about the wonderful Japanese cover of the first Midnighters book. Well, the other two in the series are available now, and are equally lovely.
Let’s take a look at all three:
What I love about these interpretations is how they’re simultaneously literal and surreal. All three use scenes directly from the book, but they also have a trippiness about them: the close up on the raindrops, the huge moon, the distended human figures.
Also, I like how the key settings—suburban, urban, and wild—show up across the covers. Location is everything in Midnighters, where the differences between city and wild are even more extreme than those in Uglies. So it’s nice to see those geographies reflected here.
And best of all are the odd touches of a different culture, like the water tower on the book 2 cover. Maybe it’s just me, but that tower seems more Okinawan than Oklahoman.
Altogether satisfying.

I have a pair of rubber boot shoes that are so bright green that I’ve been asked if they glow in the dark. I like odd shoes, but I try to go fairly normal with everything else. Probably because I don’t like shopping for clothes. I wish I did though. I need a hobby.

Lalalala. Gosh I’m going to miss you guys after tomorrow, while I’m at camp. No email, internet, computer, cell phone (we have to use calling cards to call home!), nothing. Not even iPods or MP3 Players- once you step off the bus, they take any and all technology. Yeah. Fun… lol. Oh, I cant believe I’m going to florida without my parents, with a bunch of middle schoolers and my best friend and colledge kids that are the most swimtastical fawesome colledge peeps in the entire world. Yea, they rock and the camp is a resort practially, I’ve been told… I leave tomorrow at 11:00 PM (yea, PM!) and get back a week later at 1:30 AM (yea, AM!!!!!!)

Hmm. I think life is meaningless, not stupid, unless you do something. God wouldn’t have put you on Earth unless you had a purpose. I’ve been thinking- Amy-la’s purpose may have been to speak up about her kind of abuse. Not many people know about it, so I’d be willing to bet that’s what she was meant to do. Not many people our age know what we’re meant to do yet, though, so it must take something either extremely awful or extremely amazing. I’ve had neither happen to me, really, and I haven’t had any calling yet. So right now I’m pretty much just living, and it’s meaningless. Not stupid. (no i’m not saying andrea-la was really wrong. I think she used the wrong word.)

At my old school, they had Spanish, German, and French. People mostly wanted German, but idk why because I couldn’t remember most of it. I remembered just enough to pass the midterm that had german on it. See, in 6th grade, they had us sample all of the languages and have reading as out 4th hour. So first 4.5 weeks, we took one language. Then the next 4.5 was another, then the next 4.5 was the last language, then after that each 4.5 weeks was reading class with a different of our core class teachers. But they divided us into classes, so some started with one langueage, some in the others, some with the different reading classes, etc. But i think they stopped doing that this past year. They replaced that hour with a 5th core class, where you went to a different core class an extra hour at the end of the day, switching classes every 9 wks. Unfortunately you didn’t get to choose your class, so I couldn’t stay in my language arts class all year. Ah, that was my favorite- all you did was read and do a couple of projects, with or without a partner. Lora-la and I did a board game and a “Talk Show” interviewing one of the characters. We had originally done a video summary type of thing, but started getting frustrated and such because most of the characters were guys, so they had to wear some of my dad’s colledge hats… rofl. At one point I couldn’t remember my lines and was playing the blind man in “The Messenger” and said,” why don’t we put the lines in a book, and we can pretend the blind man is reading a book!” And I was actually serious until Lora pointed out that blind men cannot read. yea… good times, LA 5th core…

“Nothing” is a word created by a humans, so it naturally will have these sorts of flaws. “Nothing” was simply meant to be a word to describe what you have if you hold no items or thoughts or feelings at the moment. It is simply “No Thing.” Overthink it or not, it’s a word.
What about “Everything?” It’s the opposite of nothing, but we don’t know what nothing is, so technically you cant define everything either.

Honey, I was into reading when i was in KINDERGARTEN lol. I’m not crazy like screaming fan of Jonas Brothers, but they sound pretty good. I don’t think any of them are cute really, but I agrfee with you guys when you say Nick is the cutEST. Because really none of them are worth screaming and crying about, especially if they’re like a football field length away from you… rofl. I still think it is funny that girls think “their dreams haev come true” when they SEE the Jonas Brothers. Again, people, please SAY when you’re typing a spoiler about any book. Unfortunately, I haven’t read New Moon or Eclipse yet. Someone forgot to put Spoiler. I learned something special about Jacob… thank you person!
I know the beginning of the Tigger song. Like the first sentence. lol. My neice is two, and watching TV downstairs with my incoming-6th-grade sister. i’m here. not for long though. my cousin is coming over… and i’ll feel bad if i’m constantly on the internet talking while she’s here.
guess what guys… i screwed up my ankle. i was playing 1st base and there was a foul ball that was really high and i was sprinting to get to it in time to get the girl out and like i wasn’t paying attention to where i was going exactly.. cuz i was watching the ball.. and i sprinted right into a fence. head and everything. and when i hit my ankle twisted the wrong way. and now it hurts like no other.

As most know, I am on vacation so hello. But I came on here for another reason. This may be long and some will be proud.
Ever since the religion discusion were I said a lot of stuff I couldn’t stop thinking. Every day I woke up, I felt the need to cry. Every where I went I saw “parise to the lord” or “god be with us” and my heart would sink. I tried to tell myself that what I was believeing was riht and if I went to hell I’d only be proving my theroy. But about 10 min. ago, I burst into tears. And you’ll never believe what quote popped into my head. “I will get all the 130 comment just to show you god conquers all”. By emily-wa. And I guess your right. He got me. Because I new that I could always go to him. I’m like crying again! But I guess what I really came to say was, you guys really helped me. I don’t no what went into my head. But I can say this, my grandma died around this time of year a while back and for some reason each year I get really upset. I wish she was still here. And I use to wander why god had to take her. But, yeah, thank you guys. And I come back to my home on thurs. Ttyl. I really thank you guys, you don’t no how much! I will never stop believeing ever again, I no how it is without god and it sucks! Still crying. Need to stop. Hope you don’t think I’m some change-ur-mind-emotional-rollar-caster kind of person. Haha. Bi.

the other day i was sleeping and didn’t wake up till my cell phone buzzed at like 11:30 and i had drivers ed at 12. so i was like crap. hurry. crap. going to be late. crap. but it was weird cuz like i didn’t put any alarms on and i didn’t have my reminder set like i usually do. and no one called. or texted. so my phone just randomly buzzed. and it was set to silent. odd. how things happen like that. just out of the blue when you really need them to. makes me wonder…
and then another time like 3 or 4 years ago my lights just randomly turned on to wake me up at like 6. and there wasn’t a timer set or anything. they just came on. my mom yelled up at me and by that time the lights had already woken me up and i was like “did you already come up here to wake me up? my lights were on when i woke up.” and she said “no.” and i couldn’t figure out why my lights were on. i had turned them off before going to bed and then they woke me up in the morning. and it’s odd too cuz it was a sunday morning and i was in this church singing group at the time and we were singing at the early service so yeah… i like to think it was a sign from God that i was suppose to be there singing about Him that day.
and i’m not one who goes to church really. i believe in Him. and i am in a singing group devoted to Him every year but this one… i wanted to be in it… but i’ll be gone when they are touring.

So, in an FAMAZING turn of events (that was sarcasm, by the way) I was grounded from almost everything electronic for practically the rest of my life.
THAT is why I have to make this quick before my parents come back home (They like never leave, EVER)

I like the roof on the first book,, I really don’t know why
it’s just…fawesome
The second is kind of odd…
And the third…the cover gives away some suspense
So, this is my goodbye….until my parents take another 5 minute trip to CVS and Addie goes with them to get ice cream (it was really random)

we made bread today!!
half our class can’t knead the dough…one guy resorted to punching it really hard repeatedly, he reasoned that punching could be the same as kneading.
bad idea.
his bread turned out all lumpy and deformed.
our bread was good though!! yay!!

ughh. my mom is calling my softball coach to complain to him.. even though i told her not to. grr. see we sponser the team.. (my familys business.) and last year my coach (60 year old man who lives to be our coach. “it’s the only reason he gets up in the morning.” -his words.) well last year he was being mean to my best friend. (cussed at her. and when she couldn’t be at a practice.. cuz of other obligations… he threw a fit.) and so my mom had a talk with him, threatening to replace him if he didn’t behave. and so this year my head coach is my best friends mom. and she’s awesome. and he is assistant coach. but my two coaches don’t see eye to eye. and he decided that we were gonna have a “you must have one strike on you before you swing rule.” …that made me mad. puts too much presser on me. and last night the first pitch she threw was the most perfect strike i have ever seen. and i had to sit there and watch it. i hated it. ended up striking out. it sucked majorly. and so i went up to him and told him i wasn’t gonna follow his rule. my other coaches sided with me. and now my moms getting into it after i specifically told her i didn’t want her to talk to him about it. and i guess the coaches are having other problems too. but mine is the reason my mom got involved. so my mean coach is likely to be even worse to be around now. eghhh! sorry if this doesn’t make a whole lotta sense. sometimes i just gotta rant.

we all went to where they were going to announce it, and he didn’t win. we were all disappointed.

It doesn’t make me feel better. What I’m trying to get you to understand is that it doesn’t matter if you wear popular clothes on the outside or straighten your hair, it’s what’s inside. And it doesn’t matter whether you read Uglies or Gossip Girl, or do swimming or cheerleading or band or whatever cuz that doesn’t make the person. At least not in my book.

guess what! passed my driving test! no more drivers ed!!
so this means that the day i turn 16 i can go to the DMV and hand them the sheet and BAM!! no more driving with my mom! i’ll be a free woman! ha! no more calling for rides! cuz i’ll be able to drive myself there and back! hehe. just a little excited if you can’t tell. 
cleaning tonight and packing so i probably won’t be on a lot. vacation on friday.

wow, i haven’t commented on scott’s blog in months!!!!!! everyone is new!!! go kay-wa for passing driver’s ed!!!! it was boring, wasn’t it??? i took driver’s ed last summer, and we watched soooo many boring movies. i remember this one time, we were watching a short video that shows a person just driving down the street. we were supposed to watch, and then my teacher would ask someone what one driving danger was. i did not pay attention at all to the video. i looked at the tv literally a second before he turned it off, and guess who he called on!!! me!!! so i gave him my answer, which was right, from only watching a second of the video. it was very entertaining!!! anyway, one comment in like, 8 months or more, and i gotta go!!!! bye people!!! i love edward cullen!!!!!!

haha thanks guys. and yeah… it was dreadfully boring. the driving wasn’t that bad cuz i was with my friends and we always talked and listened to the radio and stuff.. but the classes. 3 hours a day for 2 weeks.. that was torture. and speakers who played boring videos. and then the tons of worksheets and reports we had to do. and on top of all that our 60 year old teacher was strict and mean. he threatened to quit his job.. because after we came back from break one day we were talking.. (he hadn’t started class back up yet) ..and so yeah he had a freak out and we were all just like go ahead and quit. but that’s all over now.
i love Edward Cullen too. infact i’m rereading Eclipse right now cuz i couldn’t keep away… i really tried to at least wait a month before i read them all again, but sadly i don’t have that much will power.

I know!!! Maybe we are all oboes. And God is like the conductor. We can look at the music, but it doesn’t always go with what God says. And the oboes squeek and mess up but we also improve. Okay…I know I can think about something better than that! How about we are all blenders!!! We can make really good things, but we can also destroy. Like that one time at Church when we put Christmas decorations in the blender…good times. And when we crushed the gingerbread house!!! So, yeah, I’d like to be a blender. Then I could lick myself after I make a banana smoothie! But that one time when we put rocks into the blender…yeah…that was…interesting. See, blenders don’t need to be used for their purpose! You CAN put literally ANYTHING into a blender!!! I would know.

Anyway, I thought I would pull this moment aside to mention that this blog is about Mr. Scott Westerfeld – a lot of this chit chat has nothing to do with his writing, his books, anything relevant to the purpose of this blog.
I know I have no place to say this, but I’m personally getting frustrated coming to this website when there are 1000+ posts about a bunch of stuff I personally don’t want to read about. I want to have and read intelligent conversations about the books and about ideas that Mr. Westerfeld has, and I’m sure that a good majority of the original viewers that have favorited this website hold that in mind as well.
Please, if you’re going to chatter about senseless things while you’re bored to talk to your online friends, do it through facebook, myspace, or AIM – it’s growing tiring to have to sift through the nothing-comments and the something-comments. Just have some respect for the other readers. This wasn’t created for your own recreational conversation.
