Bogus Art

October 20th, 2008

Bogus to Bubbly: An Insider’s Guide to the World of Uglies will arrive in stores two days from now! That’s Tuesday, October 21.

The guide starts with a Hoverboard Manual from Tally’s era, which gives you tips on riding, repairing, and caring for your very on hoverboard. The manual and other sections of Bogus were illustrated by Craig Phillips, an Australian cartoonist.

Here’s a sneak preview of one bit of manual art:

And here as an added, blog-only bonus, is the rough sketch Craig sent me beforehand:

Actually, he pretty much nailed it the first time. But still, BONUS MATERIAL!

Here’s his website, if you want to look at other stuff he’s done.

One more piece of news: Justine and I will be appearing in Canada next Monday! I’ll be promoting Bogus and she’ll be talking about her new book, How to Ditch Your Fairy.

Indigo Bookstore
Toronto, Ontario
Monday, October 27
7:00pm – 8:00pm
Yorkdale Mall

Hope to see some of you there!

I thought Bogus to Bubbly was really great. It explained a lot for me. I loved the maps because I’m strangely obsessed with maps (I know its kind of weird).

I would have liked it if there was a pronunciation guide for some of the words (like littlie).

the one thing in Bogus to Bubbly that upset me was i found out that Aya’s name isn’t pronounced with the A sound, it is pronouced with an I sound and her last name is pronounced weird too, it changed the way i see the world (ok that might be a tad melodramatic but you get the point)

HIGHLY doubt. actually, to the point where i haven’t officially asked. you know, cuz my mom wouldn’t approve of me missing school to go on a roadtrip to toronto. but whatever.

    Hey, Mr. Westerfeld, sir,
I just wanted to say thanks. I’ve been a fan for a while, and you got me hooked on science fictions books when I was twelve. Now I’m lending all your books out to my friends, and I wanted to thank you for writing such great YA books. It’s really helped me and my friends connect (and also helps them understand why your books never stay on the library shelves for very long- they go faster than Twilight!).
    Keep writing, and thanks again,

I got my school book club to read uglies like last week, and now there are tons of kids walking around my school with copies of Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras covering thier faces. It’s all pretty cool. Now I have to make them all read Midnighters. (I was gonna sugggest them for the book club, but when I tried to explain why we should read them everyone was like “What?”, Wich was really funny, but didn’t help convince them to vote for my book choice.) So I swtched to Uglies and got everyone to vote for it and got the whole school (Or atleast the “book nerds” A.K.A. The only people in my entire school who have ever read a book just to read it, not for school……a surprisingly small percentage of the te general poulation) Adicted to Scott Westerfeld books!!!!!!!!!!

    Wow that was long……..

I already saw Bogus to Bubbly on Saturday at Waldens’. Didn’r get it… yet. But the maps and junk was cool. the Cutters’ hoverboards and the city were pretty close to how i imagined them. And finally! the mystery behind David’s scar! It still doesn’t answer my question tho’. How would he have told Tally the story of how he got it?

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I GOT BOGUS TO BUBBLY YESTERDAY!!!!! TWO DAYS EARLY!!!!! SOOOOOOOOO COOL!!!! ok so i was on the computer doing homework (so naturally i was on this blog) and i saw that a ton of people had gotten the book early, so i decided to tempt fate, try my luck, or watever u wanna call it and asked my dad to take me to B&N (after church, of course). so i get there and start looking at the new arrivals section in the front of the store, but it wasn’t there. then, i went and looked back at the teen section where the rest of Scott’s books are, but it’s not there either. at this point i was giving up hope so i started looking at other books and i saw Skinned. sooo i’m thinking maybe i’ll get that and then i remember Cycler and start looking for that, but i couldn’t remember who wrote it. so i started to look at the beginning of the teen section and then i see 3 sections of NEW TEEN ARRIVALS sooo i started to get really excited. sooooo excited that i forgot that the books are in alphabetcal order by authors last name until i saw the big a** BREAKING DAWN book and then everything clicks, so i look down where the W’s would be and IT’S THERE!!!!! i didn’t scream but i was soooo mixed up with emotions that i couldn’t think and i almost cried (ok bit drastic). i started it last night and finished it today!!! YYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!
ugh…typed that all with one hand!

i totally killed my thumb in gym class today….we were playing volleyball…which is hate….anyways, so i totally busted my thumb and it’s definetly sprained which is gonna kill me cuz it’s my right thumb, the one that i need. you know, to play clarinet and oboe and basically every single instrument in the world. except that i think it’s strong enough to play soprano recorder…which i don’t need to play cuz i’m playing alto in recorder ensemble this year. so yeah. my typing skills are okay though, cuz you don’t need a thumb to type. i mean, it hardly moves. yeah. let’s just say that it’s a good thing that the band concert isn’t for two weeks and that right now i just need to focus to singing and dancing…cuz of the musical. which i’m auditioning for. just i can’t dance really well, so it’s gonna be bad…but i can sing and i can act. i’ll learn to dance, whatever it takes. which is why my friend is gonna teach me. yeah. so i’m basically really busy right now. VERY busy, actually. which is good, cuz if i’m not busy then i start freaking out. yeah. so i’m just gonna go practice the dance moves til i have to go to triathlon training….

ok you guys have to hear (or read) my story!!!
Ok so i was taking a nice little shower right. I was getting all religious singing some praise-the-lord songs (beautifully i might add) when i felt something on my leg. Now, at this point i was happy and i was shampooing. So my hair was very bubbly. So then i look down to see what on my leg and it a freakin ROACH! So i scream. And as i am screaming kicking this roach off, i get shampoo in my eyes. So then i was s crazy girl with shampoo in her eyes and it was burning. So i turn off the shower, grab a towel and run to my dad. All this with burning eyes and a head full of shampoo. So he killed the roach and i didnt even want to get back in the shower. I just stuck my head under to rinse it. And thats my story for today.

Now tell me that my very gross event didnt make you feel better about your day? Because mine ended poorly.

ughhh… i feel like crap. i’m getting sick and i have fianls this week. this is like the worst time of year to be sick. i have 2 finals tomorrow and 2 on thursday and both those days we get out at 11:15 and then friday and monday we have off. i don’t want to be sick right now. ughhhhhh. well i’m gonna try to go sleep this cold off. i hope it’s only a cold though… i have a sore throat and a really bad headache… what if my brain is all screwed up from that concussion i got a few months back? could it still be screwed up? i’ve been getting headaches lately and before my concussion i would never get headaches. ugh.

SHAY-LA: yeah. I love bugs. I babysit for my little cousins, and they HATE bugs…it’s so annoying cuz they freak out whenever they see one.
Kay-wa: It sucks to be sick. It probably isn’t cuz of the concussion, though. It’s probably just stress.

ugh…my little brother is freaking out cuz today he got HOMEWORK!!! yeah. i have homework too, but i’m not crying cuz of it. gosh. he says that the worst part is that he has to “read three chapters of a book”….which i can understand cuz they pick terrible books to read at school, but really, i always read the books for english class the day that we get them, that is, if i haven’t already read them. so yeah.

MY. BOOK.” then i started stroking it like it was a pet…..then they gave me the whole “books are not pets” speech. yeah. I’d heard that one before. Then when I finally let them touch it, they were all amazed…..yeah….it was a mega-fun day…then i showed the book to my english teacher today….at which point i was spazzing…..totally and completely spazzing…..and she was all “Andrea? Are you okay?” and I was all “YES!!! I’m happier than okay!!!! I’m downright giddy!!!” then she was all “okay then”…..she didn’t understand how totally happy i was……..

Lol, Andrea I couldn’t help but laugh at your post… I’m serious, when I get that book I will probably come close to worshipping it… In a metaphorical way, of course, I would never worship anyone other than God =D That would be idolism. Which reminds me, some girl at school is like a major Christian, and really annoying too. We got off to a bad start…
She sits at my friend Teresa’s table, and I sit at that table every other day (other days I’m with Courtney, but that’s not the point.). The first time I talk to her, we get talking lightly about our religion. First, I tell her my brother’s an atheist, and had fallen out of his Chrstianity. She acts like she’d never heard the word before. I’m serious, she’s in 8th grade and is all “What did you just call him?!” THEN, the bad part, she tells me being a Catholic is WRONG. To my face. She thinks Catholics worship Mary, which is a form of idolatry which is wrong. Ugh, I hate when people think we worship saints and Mary… We pray to them, and we don’t believe prayer is a form of worship. We pray to them, asking them to pray for us. Note the, “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amound women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, PRAY FOR US SINNERS, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.” We ask for prayer, not like she’s a god (goddess… whatever you wanna call it.).

Then she has the effin nerve to come up behind me a couple days later and give me a huggish thing from behind me, puts her face up next to mine and goes all, “hey buddy how’s it goin’ yea blah blah blah…”

…Teresa agrees with me. She scares us. We seriously said it at the exact same time when she left to get in the lunch line. It was pretty freaky, actually..

I remember when I got a post card from Scott-la. It was prewritten, but still SO COOL! I let my friends touch it after them giving me a bunch of skeptical looks when I was all “STAY AWAY!”…but only by the edges, of course. OMG, I hope my name’s in there! I doubt it, but I will SCREAM right in the bookstore if my name is in there. On the off chance that it DOES happen, I hope I don’t break any of the store’s windows….

lol…..my english teacher thinks that i’m slightly obsessive….which i’m not…..i just really REALLY love that book….which explains why i told my friends that they are not allowed to borrow it cuz i don’t wanna let it out of my sight…..during lunch and spare today, me and my friends were reading aloud from Bogus to Bubbly….then we all burst out laughing cuz it just seemed kinda weird….then i’m all “OH MY GOSH THIS IS JUST LIKE…………..”I basically went on a really high-pitched rant about something in some book…..not like anyone could understand cuz i was using my “I can talk really high pitched cuz i’m excited” voice….

  109. 109

    October 22nd, 2008 11:30

oh and then when i was stroking the book on the spine my friends were all “Andrea, this is NOT the monster book of monsters from harry potter…why the heck are you stroking it?” to which i said “cuz i love it and it needs to be cared for” then my friends are all “you can’t feed a book, you know” and then i said “yes. i know” then they said “….have you tried?” to which i replied “nope. i DO have more than half a brain you know” then my friends said “yes, we know. just you DO know that the book isn’t alive…right?” to which i said “uh huh. just like the sky is purple and cows can talk”….then they knew that i was totally sane.

I also do the whole “the sky is purple thing,” except mine’s more like “and the sky is green, the grass is blue, and *insert random jking insult about the friend who is questioning my insanity.* I don’t feel too bad about the insults, because when I ask them if they know that I DO have a brain, they’re all “well…..”

Haha, I love British/Australian phylosophy (sp? I can’t spell for my life.)! IDK why, but just the word “Winnipeg” sounds familiar…. My area’s definatley getting cold–or at least colder than it’s been in a while. We had a very loooooong Indian Summer, and today it was in the high 40s, and today I actually had to go outside a lot, and I had on a very thin sweatshirt *shivers*.
My school’s drama is annoying, if you don’t get a lead role you at least get ensemble (out cast is over 100 every year), kind of like Shay-la’s, but they’re SO biased with the parts, that it’s barely worth it to audition. IDK why I did…three years in a row.
Ew, I hate that crunchy sound! Once I saw a rock or something in the bathroom and I kicked it aside and it made this weird sound that I knew it was a roach and I FREAKED. I’m pretty much to chicken to actually kill a bug, though I’m sure I have before.
That’s what my social studies teacher is like, she puts things on the test that we never learned and then lecture the class when we all do terribly.
SONJA, you live in AUSTRALIA! LUCKY!!
I absolutley suck at languages. I pull off a high B, low A, or (if I’m lucky) high A on the tests, then I forget everything the minute after I’m done with it, so I do SO BAD on the review test.
(Wow, this is long considering that it’s just me adding irrelevant comments to other peoples’ conversations….)
