As of yesterday, Leviathan is out in paperback and in stores everywhere. As I’ve been tweeting, the illustrations are all the same as in the hardback and the paper almost as lovely, though the map is tragically black and white. But for only $9.99 (US) that’s pretty good!
Now because you have all been waiting so long for Behemoth (out October 5) here is the second ART TEASER! That’s right, a genuine piece of art from Chapter 7 of Behemoth.
Image by Keith Thompson, of course.
Behold the beautiousness that is the bridge of the Leviathan. Then make sure to click the image to make it bigger! Seriously! The gnarly details are many.
And in case you missed it, click here to check out the first teaser.
Anyway, hope you like it. (How could you not?) And in case you forgot, the Leviathan paperback looks like this:
And just to be extra crass, here’s a BUY button!

WOOO! 1st to comment! Scott-wa could you please give uglies fans an update on the Uglies movie!?
August 11th, 2010 23:27
Nice! Very detailed artwork.

Are the images on the covers of Leviathan and Behemoth Keith Thompson drawings? They look like photos taken of models that were made to look vaguely hand-drawn in Photo Shop. If that’s true, why on earth wouldn’t they put Keith Thompson art on the cover?
August 12th, 2010 00:48
i don’t think it’s Keith’s art. The faces he draws look a little more angular to me, and there is less gradual shading.I think the reason they don’t use Keith’s art on the cover because it is black and white, and color is better at catching your eye. I know that on some books the cover is a painting. Maybe part of the leviathan cover is a painting, and then the rest was added with a computer. Or I could be totally wrong (:

Haha I like the bird!
@ Stephanie:
I think a cover needs to be a little simpler. You snatch someone’s attention with something simple and eye-cathching, then you draw them in with the awesome details… That’s how a book works… if it’s successful. They start with something you can grasp, start building up so many details that you can’t stop in the middle, then blow you away with some sort of awesome conclusion! Well, at least Scott does that pretty well. So, yeah, similar deal with covers. If it’s too detailed right off the bat, we skip over it and miss EVERYTHING…

I’m agreeing with Claire-wa!!! I totally love all the fan art and stuff, but I’m a *huge* Uglies fan.
We *NEED* movie updates!!!
Please, Scott-la?

I cannot wait for Behemoth to come out. The artwork is so detailed. Keith Thompson did such a great job. No surprise there. Here I am sitting at my computer wondering, what is going on in this scene? The suspense is hurting me! And I really like the paperback Leviathan cover.

And there are lizard or amphibian things on the ground, too… I keep noticing more and more details!

August 12th, 2010 16:15
Soooo many details, it’s amazing! I wonder what’s going on the scene, ahhh I can’t wait for the book to come out. Also did anyone else notice that Alek (I assume that’s Alek at least) is slouching, for some reason I’m thinking that’s a character change….AH my English teacher is rubbing off on me!
But ya, AMAZING art.
August 12th, 2010 18:31
That supercalafraga-AWESOME! The art is really cool.
To Amy: Yea, I think it is Alek… hmm… wonder what that could mean…
Anyway… that’s great art! October 5th needs to come faster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 12th, 2010 19:56

YES! I’m totally not allowed to get hard-back books, so I immediately snatched up Lev in paperback when I noticed it in the bookstore yesterday. I was so transfixed by just having it that I stared at the cover the whole way home and didn’t notice that I was drooling a bit. My mother insists that I was also made a very high-pitched squealy noise every few minutes, though I have no recollection of that……sort of. Can’t wait to get started!!!!
August 13th, 2010 07:55
Beautiful artwork. I’m pumped for October!
August 13th, 2010 08:52
@ Amy
Yeah, I thought I noticed a slouch, too, but I think it has more to do with mood. As Keith was saying in the interview, a lot of these shots are farther away, like they used to be, unlike what we are used to now. Now, we are used to looking at minute details on a character’s face, but in a picture like this, you need to use a character’s entire body language to portray emotion. Sort of like the difference between modern day movies and theater.
I’m not so sure it’s Alek, though… But I don’t know, really. The weird thing is the other people seem to be in a good mood. Hmmm… Been making me curious.
August 13th, 2010 08:54
(S)he could just be tired? Just accomplished some amazing feat? Dunno, guess we’ll find out.
August 13th, 2010 12:39
I both love and hate these teasers! I love them because: It gets me wondering about what’s going to happen in the book and how it corresponds to chapter seven.
I hate them because: It gets me wondering about what’s going to happen in the book and how it corresponds to chapter seven. I’m extremely excited about Behmoth! Can’t wait till October!!!
August 13th, 2010 22:44
Could that be Deryn/Dylan at the bottom-ish left entering the room?
August 16th, 2010 12:11
will there be a third art teasers? I really hope so
August 16th, 2010 23:44
i think it’s Alek and Volger on the left, and the captain on the right. alek looks like he’s in trouble with the captain, and he’s slouching because he knows he did something wrong. Volger is sticking up for him against the Captian, but only because he doesn’t want anyone but himself yelling at alek. either that or that’s volger turning in Deryn to the captain for something or other. cant tell for sure, but it’s probably alek. Deryn always stand up very strait when being addressed by the captain.
August 17th, 2010 23:05
I think I like the hardcover jacket cover art a lot better than the paperback cover art. The paperback version clashes a little with Keith Thompson’s art.
WHY DO YOU TORTURE US LIKE THIS WITH THE ART TEASERS IT’S LIKE KILLING ME NOT TO BE ABLE TO READ BEHEMOTH HERE AND NOW!!!!!!!!!
AND, LIKE, I AM MUSLIM AND SOME OF MY FRIENDS ARE TURKISH SO I NEEEEEEEEEEEEED TO KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THE (islamic, turkish) OTTOMAN EMPIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
