As a much older adult, I discovered YA Dystopian novels through The Hunger Games. I was convinced to read it by a friend. I’m not too keen on the romance aspect of many YA novels, the better authors (IMO) tend to let any romance be a minor side story.

My favorite books/series are those in which I can see the unfortunate possibility of that future for us. I think “Extras” is one of those books that you can almost see starting today — with today’s ‘reality stars.’

On a fangirl side note – your “Uglies Series” I almost didn’t read because of the whole concept of a society striving for perfection — but I’m glad I did because it really tops “The Hunger Games” as my favorite series.

I remember when the shop down the road installed the high-frequency sound device or ‘mosquito’. It was horrendous as I could hear it from my garden. According to the Moving Sound Technologies website, the pitch they used was for “teenagers 13 – 25 years” which is an interesting interpretation of a “teenager”. Eventually they got rid of it. It’s not like it really worked anyway.

Came to this from your insightful NaNoWriMo pep talk about things, and hence the world, being not-simple. Some of the best advice ever.

In almost everything I write, some character points out that young people in today’s (US, at least) society get a very raw deal. I was moved close to tears by some of the things you said, they are so much what I have been convinced of for years.

And if it’s of interest, I am 72 years old, and didn’t get too much of a raw deal. I don’t know how I escaped.

I respect and admire teens and incipient adults more than any other human beings.
