PFFF...good books, and you put Hunger Games, Mortal Instruments and Max Ride up there. You, sir, have not yet read TRUE good books.

Cleanse your mind and devower the following;

The Hungry City Chronicles by Phillip Reeve (AKA The Mortal Engines Quartet in their original British)
The Clockwork Century by Cherie Preist (first book is entitled Boneshaker)
Airborn by Kenneth Oppel
The Halo tie in novels
The Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo

HG is ADAQUITE. However Katniss...I dunno. Either she's aboslutly INSANE, or the author couldn't get her characterisation right. And...she REALLY needs to stop thinking EVERYTHING through.

Well if we're going by THAT measurement YES, Katniss is FANTASTIC. I was comparing her to Hester Shaw...
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 09:51:47 AM
Trust me; she's above Katniss in badassery. Kat's life compaired to hers is HEAVEN. I mean, Kat's got a FACE. Hester's missing her left eye, her nose, and most of the center of her face from a sword cut at age 5. Not to mention she has no home, no parents (both killed by the same guy who sliced open her face), no siblings, and no friends. Albiet that's part for the corse in a universe where cities move and eat each other...but still.
Oh, and she crushes a guys head with a typewriter at one point. And is as accurate with a bow as Kat is.

She usually wears a shawl or a scarf over it but...yeah. Look up pictures of her on DA.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 10:02:51 AM
Well yes...that would be my freind Sarah. No scar. That's not the Hester Shaw I'm talking about.

Shaw in Mortal Engines (the book series she's from) is 16 in the first book, 18 in the second, 30-something in the last two.

Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 10:07:47 AM
No, the only real-person picture on there is mine, and she's cosplaying as MY Hester Shaw, from Darwin's Fist. Stole the name cause I liked it. Works for a fanfiction.

And she's one half of the protagonists. The narrative jumps around a lot. We hear from Tom, the main character, the most, but we hear from her, and from the vilians, and from random people...

Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 10:36:03 AM
No, I am a man, yes. The girl in the picture is my freind Sarah. That is Darwin's Fist Hester Shaw (MY character). Everything else should be the one from Mortal Engines.

Not really. This sorta things happened before.

Wow, someone actually posted Vampire Academy on here.

So they did...heard that was a good series.

It is, but I don't think u would like it.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 04:53:18 PM
Not really my cup of tea, aye.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Luna Lovegood on December 09, 2012, 04:54:01 PM
nope, they don't use tanks or nukes or anything like.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 04:55:45 PM
Well I'm finally reading Hunger Games and I'm enjoying that.
Strangely, I'm drawing some strong resembalances between your original depitcion of Dot and Katniss. They're both very rational and calm. Except Katniss is too focused on her emotions. She rationalies them ALL while Dot just ignored them. ITs...interseting.

heh, yeah, kat probably did effect my take on dot's personality a bit
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 05:02:15 PM
Is fine. Makes her more an interesting character. And of course we face off against a Pretty equivlent of Everdeen in the RP which is just too funny.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Luna Lovegood on December 09, 2012, 05:04:25 PM
Yep. So who do you like the best and what book are you on?
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 05:06:14 PM
Still first. Its a slow read, both because I'm busy with near-holiday doings and because I keep having to put it down and think through plot ideas and simple stupid "what if" scenarios. But so far its not bad. The opening was slow and a little "blegh", the actual Games are really interesting (even though they're SLOWER than everyone made them out to be in their reviews) and the end is starting to look strange...I feel like the two-winner rule which just got introduced seems like kinda a shoe-in to make sure that Peeta lived to the next book.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Luna Lovegood on December 09, 2012, 05:10:53 PM
It's a fun ride tho, and I think that the 2nd one is actually better (expect for a certain person dying who they got totally wrong in the movie >:( ) The game in that one seems more heartless.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 05:15:35 PM
Probably cause it is...Now I need to read it of course. And of COURSE they screwed up something in the movie. They always screw stuff up.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Luna Lovegood on December 09, 2012, 05:17:45 PM
Yeah, the movies hardly ever do the books justice.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 05:19:31 PM
Hence why I skip most of the ones for series I don't really like. And most of the ones for the ones I do. I think I only watched up to HP 4 then I was like, blegh, done. And I was.
Golden Compass kinda ruined it for me really. The books are a BAZZILION times better than the movie.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Luna Lovegood on December 09, 2012, 05:22:55 PM
I just couldn't get into the golden compass books.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 05:24:28 PM
Now you know how I felt reading some other series. I only got through them out of boredom. Not ones to reread for sure.
On a less related not, I hate jumping into a new fandom after everyone else has because all the fanfiction is for the later books and I have not clue what the clart is going on at all.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Luna Lovegood on December 09, 2012, 05:26:14 PM
you've stated this before, you said that's why it took you so long to get into hg.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 05:27:16 PM
Bingo. Pretty much yeah. But now I have proof of it. So I felt like saying it again.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Luna Lovegood on December 09, 2012, 05:30:56 PM
but all that fan art that makes no sense to you right now is not taking away from the awesomeness that is the book.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 05:33:02 PM
Nor the fanfictions, aye. Well, psudo-awesomeness. The books are better than say, Harry Potter and Max Ride in my opinion but not as good as Mortal Engines.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Luna Lovegood on December 09, 2012, 05:34:12 PM
Nothing will be as good as that is to u, you're obsessed with M.E.
Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 05:35:02 PM
Yes, yes I am. Well, there is ONE thing better. The prequel to it XD.
But seriously. HG is pretty damn good. Its better than I hoped it would be.

Title: Re: Great Books!

Said I'd try didn't I?
And wow we went off topic, sorta.
Though I'm a little surprised the list didn't have Leviathan or Uglies on it.
Title: Re: Great Books!

Uglies is on it.
Title: Re: Great Books!

Title: Re: Great Books!
Post by: Straif on December 09, 2012, 05:50:53 PM
As it does me but there's not really much we can do about it.
Oh, I'm putting up a role call on here for more RPers since the RP seems to be going rather slowly.

Break right? Still, that'll give us some time to get the number of players back up from you, me, CPG, Anchor and Kim.
Though Kim's gone to play Dragon Age II I think.

Well yeah. Never said I didn't believe you.
Of course now my mind has twisted the premise into something that is totally different for one of my own stories and now I keep seeing Katniss running from my character DJ as he blasts apart trees with a railgun.
