Title: So am I the only one?
Post by: Lexa-Wa on July 25, 2013, 08:41:32 AM
I really don't care if the books get turned into a movie because its gonna bring kn people that aren't going to be true fans.

So how are they not fans? Because they became interested in Scott's books only after they heard about it through the movie? I know where you're coming from, but it doesn't mean every new fan will be 'fake'. And if the formers have this attitude, then the forum will be a really awful place for any fan to explore.

Its just what's happened with Twilight and Hunger Games. The whole thing with they read the book to say it. Yea its amazimg for Scott and he deserves it but then they watch they watch the movie and are bigger fans of the movies than the books. They know the actors and not the author.  And they never get the true message of the book. Like Tally and the indifference I'm who She want to be and her demons inside her for what she's done. Or that Katniss volunteered to save the one person thay was her world. That's why.

I see your point is they won't have an indepth analysis of the character if they watched the movie but didn't read the book.

Seems really elitist to me. If people are really worried about getting a bunch of 'untrue fans' who haven't studied the books left to right, then maybe (if the time ever comes), we could ask Scott to have a separate board created for the movie. So people who've only seen the movie would have a place to discuss it, and if it seriously bothered a person they could just stay away from that board?

Very true Rai, but if they wanna talk about the book where could they put it if they stay away from  the board. I could care less about it really I rarely come on, I do beilieve in giving them a chance.

I've been wanting a movie since I read the books in 7th grade -- the ideas inside Uglies are amazing and deserve to be seen even it it is by people who only see the movie -- at least that means they were exposed to the Uglies world.

No one around me read Harry Potter when I was growing up and I saw the first movie at summer camp on a rainy night, I never would have known what it was without the movies, and I genuinely enjoy the Harry Potter world.I haven't read the books and I am sure they are fantastic but as I've already seen the movies and the books are so massive in size I just haven't gotten around to reading a story that I already know pretty well. I still consider myself a fan, and I still geek out when I see Harry Potter stuff at the store or in random places. I make Harry Potter references when I can and squee over myself being so clever. I am a fan, I've just never read the books as I wasn't aware of them until after I'd already seen the movie.

That's a great idea! I just hope very much that people don't see the movie, not read any of Scott's books, and call themselves a Westerfan... Or that anyone expects me to remember the actors...

Maybe someday -- after my pile of books I haven't read yet that I already bought get read.

I'll be honest; I'll take ANY fan of the series, "fake" or not. Because I am DAMN TIRED of mentioning it in conversations with people and getting blank looks. If the movie comes out (a pretty goddamn big IF) then we'll have more people who know it and we might actually get more people on here.
That, and those of us who have been fans for a while will, like the HP, Twilight, and Hunger Games fandoms before us, get the satisfaction of standing back and saying "I was part of that before it was sweet."

I got to say that with Hunger Games! So there. Now I'll have another.

And I got to say it with Harry Potter. Oh, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Really? Cool. I, unfortunately, was born too late to get a chance to say that with HP.

I got to do that with HG and now TMI and soon Divergent... and yea we will always have that satisfaction to know that we like it before it was cool. And I love that feeling. I'm just happy that the love triangle doesn't come till later in book 2.

What series does TMI stand for?
I'm glad I got to be a fan of Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Uglies before their movies came out (or will come out)!

Trust me, your not the only one feeling like the fans will be fake after the movie. I feel the smae way. They will never be able to get frustrated at the characters and throw the book across the room. The movie fans won't even know about this blog to show the author how much they love his story plot. He deserves it because he worked hard on the series. But who are the real fans here? Its the friends who call each other the pretty nicknames. The people who feel like their life is over after the last book. That being said I so want to see the movie. Midnight showing!

If I can get my parents to take me, I'll go to the midnight showing too. In my shirt that says "the book was better". Because we all know that the movie won't be up to par with the book.

I still think a solution would be to make a separate board for the movie.

A movie would definitely bring in a new audience. I liked what they did with Ender's Game, I'm sure its possible to make an Uglies movie that is still true to the book.

Ender's Game was actually pretty close to the book. Except for a few minor details, like certain character's roles, and their ages.

But I agree with what a lot of people on here are saying, a movie would bring in a lot of "fake" fans, like what happened with The Hunger Games. I was a fan before it became "the next Twilight", and I had the misfortune of watching the fandom transform from a reasonably intelligent group of people who actually appreciated the series, into a rabid, screaming bunch of fangirls (and guys, dont wanna be sexist.) It kinda ruined it for me, a little bit :I They don't realize the deeper meanings or the series or even appreciate the characters. Most of them only got into the series because it was cool, or for the hot guys, and many of them never bothered to read the books. Honestly, it kills me a little bit every time I look up news for Catching Fire (can't wait!!!), and I see it on Perez Hilton. I REALLY don't want to see Uglies on Perez Hilton. However, I still think they should make a movie. It would introduce so many people to the series who would be real fans, and come on, it's an Uglies movie! I would sell my soul for an Uglies movie...

Very true, I am shocked today when I see people who never read the book getting stoked for the movies.

Also, in the case of HG, I have quite a few pet peeves about things they should have done differently, like you know, ADD THE BLOODY HUNGER! Because Gale scaring off good game is so out of character for him it is painful.

I agree with everything that you said about Hunger Games. I liked it before it was super popular, and now it's more or less ruined for me.

Just going to put this out there: If you honestly think that people who haven't read the books can't be hardcore fans of a movie (NOTE: this is just the movie/ movie series, etc.), then I shake my head at you. I mean, I'm a HUGE fan of the Game of Thrones tv show, but I've only really read the first book. So does that mean I'm a 'fake fan' of GoT?

I get where you guys are coming from, but you really have to lighten up. The way you're acting now, you could be chasing away potential friends and people who could really help strengthen the fandom by throwing the 'fake fan' label everywhere.

People who haven't read the books can totally be real, hardcore fans of the movie. Just not of the book.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. And its something you all need to wrap your heads around.
Though just being a fan of the movie isn't a bad thing, either. And, again, they're not fake fans of the Uglies series. And if we go off on a rampage about how people who've only seen the movies are fake and how only people who've read the books loooong before the movie came out are 'teh troo fans', then do you really think they're going to want to get into the fandom and start reading the books at all? Probably not.

All I'm saying is, when and if the movie comes out, we need to give the new waves of fans a chance before we start condemning them.

Not all fans of the movie will be fake, but it pretty much goes without saying that the movie WILL bring in a lot of "fake" fans. That was what we were trying to get at.
Title: Re: So am I the only one?

And, again, I don't think they're going to be fake. Maybe annoying, yes, lots of them will be annoying. But hey, some of the current book fans annoy me, too.

But whatever. When the movie comes out I'm going to be off enjoying myself watching it and having discussions about it and not worrying about labeling certain fans as being 'fake' or 'true'.
