Title: Uglies-ish Quote
Post by: tridecagirl on May 18, 2010, 09:22:44 AM
In The Great Gatsby, which our class is reading, this rich woman is talking about her daughter and she says, "I hope she's a fool. That's the best thing for a girl to be in this world - a beautiful little fool."
It reminded me of Uglies. Do you see her point? What do you think?

When she says "beautiful little fool" I think of the pretties, and how they're stupid but pretty and they're happy. And since Daisy says that's the best thing for a girl to be, I was just thinking about it. In a time when women are pretty much objects, might it not be better to be stupid and attractive?

hmmm in a fake world maybe..being pretty and stupid can get you some places..but i would rather have a brain..and yes i see how the quote relates now :) They are all gorgeous..yet bubbleheads....the way a lot of people are these days :/

I see how the quote relates. But that quote is moronic and untrue.

Um.. has anyone read mansfeild park? Austen points out something like "there is nothing a man loves more than a pretty face who knows nothing, yet is curious and wants to learn from what he has to say." This made me laugh, but I find it sadly kind of true.

the great gatsby quote does indeed fit with uglies (i will get round to reading the great gatsby, it is looking at me now from the bookshelf along with many others i am yet to read)
and for some men, the mansfield park quote is true, but its kind of stereotypical, not all men want a "trophy wife"

no, but it appeals to their manliness.... ::)

I think a lot of men used to like girls who didn't think, but I think people are changing and smart girls are cute too. I think for the time period that the book was written, this quote would have been true to many men.

The quote makes me think of the Shania Twain song She's not just a pretty face

True to that, I do believe that society is changing, but it saddens me how long it took for this to become true.

Lets do a touch of editing shall we...

Lol, no... I wasn't editing the quote becasue it was wrong... (I have no idea what the quote is) I was editing because what it says is crap... but if you take out the middle it's 100% accurate :)

sorry if you thought I was correcting you lol ^_^

lol, but that sounded more correct. hmm... that is close to right but still a little sexist. Better than before.

Do you really think that's sexist?? Is it any more sexist than saying "there is nothing a woman loves more than a guy with a masculine body who is curious and wants to listen to what she has to say."

And you can't disagree with that quote either really can you lol =P

yeah but it's the image of the girl trying to please the guy by listening, doesn't he wan to hear from her? On her ideas? And masculine guys are not all attractive.

(btw, Not all that worked up about it, just like debating ;))

Yeah I remember from another topic you love debating xD

I used the word masculine because I thought it would be a cover all that everyone would find attractive, but if you dont find masculine attractive, can you describe what you do? :)

And in the first quote (after the change) "there is nothing a man loves more than a pretty face who is curious and wants to learn from what he has to say." I took this as saying a man wants a woman who is willing to try new things and learn and progress...

it doesn't have to hinder the guy from listening to her and her ideas

(right this should make more sense now lol)

lol, I like nerdy guys, computer geeks, english nerds, science addicts. And I am constantly made fun of for it.

And yes, your quote applies to most of my friends, just as the jane austen quote seems to apply to a lot of guys. But not all. So I guess the point is, stop being a slave gender roles, and that generalizing is a pain.

I was looking for someone to fit the following:

Height: 5'9"
Bust: 31"
Waist: 22"
Hips: 31"
Thigh: 18"
Hair Colour: Brunette
Occupation: Runway Model
IQ: 150 (give or take 5)

Now really... should that have been so hard to find?? =/

i don't think we should have to adhere to our gender stereotypes, but i do think that if a woman wants to be a housewife and look after the family, her husband and her house, then that is her decision and she has as much right to be a housewife as any other woman has to be a career woman
i probably wouldn't be compatible with a maths or computer geek, because i hate maths and I.T, and the only science i genuinely like is biology (chemistry is ok, and physics i despise)... but an english geek maybe, because i love english, and other thoughtful subjects- i prefer ideas to straightforward logic if that makes sense... i don't know what exactly my type is, but i know what my type isn't...
