Title: I am going to write a book
Post by: GeeBeezy on May 27, 2014, 10:43:23 PM
I am going to write a book.
I have always wanted to but it was Leviathan that convinced me that it was possible, hence me writing about it on this forum.
I am not going to talk about it here [spoilers #RiverSong] but I would be absolutely honored if you peeps would tell me what you personally want me to write about.
I'm not promising that I will or anything, I'm still sticking to my story, but I would love to hear from you guys.  :)

Besly,

Just do whatever you want. The worst thing that a writer can do is be too afraid to write what they want out of fear that no one will like it.

Make it brutal. Make it violent. Make it disturbing and provocative. Good ground rules for any book in my expereince.

Cannibal cities, Mortal Engines Quartet, Hungry City Chronicles, depends on who you talk to...
But yeah.

Lol, it makes me happy to see someone get that excited over the mortal engines :]
Predators Gold was the first book that I had ever read which contained steampunk, I'd always loved steampunk but I'd never known what it was called or found any books or shows that had it in it. After that I devoured the third and first books [in that order]. I still haven't read Darkling plain and I kinda don't want to....IT CANNOT END! :[

But seriously though, Mortal engines, Leviathan and Fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood are [at the very least in my opinion] the best three steampunk series in the world. :]

YOU'VE SEEN FMA! :D (Heheh :) )
Title: Re: I am going to write a book

I think FMA is TECHINCALLY "magic-punk", or maybe "diesel-punk", but your right its still very good.
Mortal Engines was the first one I found too...good introduction I'd say.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: GeeBeezy on May 31, 2014, 10:47:19 PM
Lol! I like it here, everyone is so easy to get excited!
Also, I get what you mean by "magic punk" Straif but I think that's a little bit off. You see, Mortal Engines, FMA and Leviathan are the three best examples of Steampunk because of what they are.
Mortal Engines is quite frankly the best ever example of the scale that is steampunk is capable of, when written correctly that is. A less talented writer might have thought of having cities on wheels, then completely ignored the ways that that would impact the world. Mortal engines has a planet that is ravaged by horrific wars and horrific excess, and what makes it such a masterpiece is that it goes the whole way, everything is huge, disastrous and amazing, and it is the most endearing thing about the series.
FMA is the best example of realistic or elegant steampunk. Every piece of technology in FMA MAKES SENSE! They are all feasible technologies [except of course alchemy, although it is very believable] what makes them fantastic is that they have been accomplished before their time [e.g. automail and carbon fibre are both possible] and the scientific advancements that they have made that haven't been accomplished in real life [such as the automail] are due to their knowledge being accelerated by alchemic research. To put it simply, FMA makes no excuses, it doesn't have to have buildings wrapped with pipes and everyone wearing top hats to be steampunk, it is what it is. It is a perfect example of lite steampunk or steamdeco. And at no point is the suspension of disbelief necessary [exept of course when a fifteen year old jumps twice their own height, but thats just cartoon physics for you].
Leviathan is a combination of both, vast in scale but matter of fact in the way it is presented, to the point where it can portray cliche'd concepts like walkers yet have them instantly believable.
What all three have in common is that they each follow their own logic perfectly, and their respective logic systems are close enough to real life to be believable, and that is what makes them so endearing!
However Leviathan and Mortal Engines also share in the romantic side of steampunk, the whimsy that comes with sipping hot chocolate in the Jenny's cabin while watching a wasteland roamed by cannibal cities fall beneath the curvature of the earth, to take an air taxi around a city MADE OF CITIES! Or the nostalgia of picturing Derryn scribbling away on the spine or imagining walls covered in steam or messanger lizard pipes, or visiting a library covered in spider walkers, or drinking turkish coffee at a shadow puppet show with lilit and Alek. FMA has a romance of its own, but FMA tells its story through alchemy, rather than tech.
All three however are absolute masterpieces, artworks that are just perfect, absolutely impossible to reproduce. In fact one of my biggest fears is that I might subconciously base my work on them, the last thing I want to do is write another Knock off.

Also I am an anti tractionist. The earth will be green again.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: GeeBeezy on May 31, 2014, 10:57:31 PM
Oh, and all three use steampunk as an excuse to tell a story [e.g. a crashed zeppelin wouldn't have been able to leave the alps in leviathan and without automail Edward Elric would have been unable to perform alchemy] rather than cobble together a story as an excuse to show steampunk.

Very poetic explaination :) *applauds* I still need to read Mortal Engines, though :P
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: GeeBeezy on June 01, 2014, 11:18:10 AM
"Need" is the right word! LOL
Its one of those series that gives you nostalgia even if you've never read it. Its clunky in parts and yeah there's a lot of cliche. But the whole thing is an absolute love letter to all those lovely little tropes that make steampunk so lovable.
Oh, and sorry for the info dumping before.

I agree with Straif,, the world building is What makes Mortal engines great!

in comparison to a lot of post apocalyptic YA books that have been coming out recently it's just so much better.

Dont' get me started..hell, even ones that came out a while ago.
Leviathan was pretty bare on it, so was the Hunger Games, Divergent's was practically NONEXISTENT...

We have too much romance in lit. It's like every single character is a failure if they don't end up dating or married by the end of the series!! One of the reasons why I liked Divergent was because at the last second, she decided hell with romance. of course, because of how she had set everything up in the 1st books, the 3rd felt really left field. Besly, never do that. Always stay true to your tones and messages that you want to write.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book

WORD.
(Though do have SOME romance in your novel because a completely bare one will loose you readers...just dont make it central. Do as Mortal Engines did...it happens, and you don't realize it happens until things are really deep, dark, and blowing up and its probably too late. Poor, POOR Bevis...)

That's probably the best description for it. It happens. Not always, but lets face it, most of the time that you get any group of guys and gals people start pairing up. Admittedly the extent that they do in the angsty teen romance ones is way over the top [no healthy teenager makes a suicide pact with someone they met a month ago because their parents won't let them get tattoo's.] but pretending that it doesn't happen at all is equally unrealistic. I'm not making romance a goal for my book but if it happens naturally and makes sense then I'm gonna let it happen. I'd be an idiot not to, I just really hope I don't fall headlong into the whirlpool of tropes. In fact, when I was like fifteen I got like 26,000 words into a story, then took a break and realised that the whole thing was a piping hot mess of cliche [I mean honestly, a fifteen year old who wears a top hat with goggles, has a clockwork arm and artifical eyes and works on airship engines? It makes me sick just thinking about it.] don't worry though, I couldn't have stepped further away from that style of writing if I'd tried. Rule of thumb, what gets written in high school, should STAY in high school.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: Panzercrappitastica on June 03, 2014, 11:26:10 AM
But S. E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders in high school.
Like Harry Potter. There's romance but it isn't really a central plot.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: GeeBeezy on June 03, 2014, 11:43:07 AM
Exactly! And Harry Potter follows a group of kids going to a boarding school for seven odd years, going through good times, bad times, puberty etc. It makes sense that at least some of those people would fall in love or at least get crushes.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: Straif on June 03, 2014, 11:44:01 AM
Your description maybe cliche...but its at least an AWESOME cliche.
Though you are completely right...dont get me started on my first official fanfiction (ironically enough for Mortal Engines...jus tugh)

And yes, some romance is unavoidable. Its simple biology. Like you said, put people of opposite genders in a group, add pressure and they'll pair off.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: Luna Lovegood on June 03, 2014, 11:48:52 AM
Though Harry Potter, if it weren't for the magic, the first 2 books would be pretty stereotypical British School Narratives

(Rule of Thumb, never say Rule of Thumb near feminist, they'll kill you)
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: Straif on June 03, 2014, 11:51:28 AM
 Both points are very true.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: GeeBeezy on June 03, 2014, 11:55:51 AM
Not all people will pair up though. I'm trying to be as realistic as possible about it, I mean, just look at shipping, while some make sense [e.g. I think Katniss would be better with Gale than Peeta] most of them are just sickening. There is this assumption that if any speaks to any one at all, or is friends with any one at all, or hates anyone at all then they are automatically a couple. The worst part about that is that it means-
A: There is no such thing as a normal conversation.
B: You cannot have friends without being romantically attracted to them.
C: Dislike makes you a couple.
The worst version of this is people who take childhood friends/best friends of the same gender and do the whole "They are a gay couple " thing, cause honestly? That just says that there is no such thing as loving someone like a brother/sister or as a best friend. I REALLY hate it when people do that.
Bottom line,
A: Some people just like talking
B: There is such thing as not being attracted to someone
C: Most people in real life are actually straight
D: If people act like they dislike each other, they probably dislike eachother
Also, what you said about Harry Potter without the magic? That is EXACTLY why I am trying to avoid power systems for my book, they can be done right and used to make a good story [e.g. anything by Brandon Sanderson, seriously anything] but they usually end up as a crutch.

Title: Re: I am going to write a book

I reckon the same :]
Like I shipped Deryn and Alek from the start, cause they were LITERALLY PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER!!!
If I don't feel that way about my characters I wont pair em.

However, if character's are horrible for each other, but one develop a shallow crush. I'm all for exploiting that and making many awkward moments for that character.

Title: Re: I am going to write a book

Well, when I say a knock off, I mean "a book about a young sixteen year old girl with brown hair, gray eyes and is pale who is a typical girl from a small town that lives with her single mom, and is a bit emotionally detached since her dad died. Anyway, her typical life is thrown out of whack when her Bio class is forced to all change seats and she gets put at the same table as the mysterious bad boy Patch. Who has a deep secret, but nonetheless, she is unreasonably attracted to him."

I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

You are all forgiven....... OKAY! HOMEWORK TIME!   :D
List these things in order from most to least annoying, and why.....
-Prodigy characters
-The power of friendship as an actual thing
-Steampunk where everyone is white and British and there are pedal powered zeppelins and everyone wears goggles and top hats because.
-Mopey Vampires/Werewolves/characters that don't actually have that good a reason for their mopeyness
-Characters that could be so wonderful/badass if the author wasn't a dumdum
-The author having a favorite character [not a main character, a favorite character]
-Love triangles
-Token badass normal characters who aren't that great but are just there to show that "Muggles are just as good! Honest!"
-Emo kid who constantly feeds off of sympathy when they have no real problem in their life besides how "Lonely" and "Troubled" and "Misunderstood" they are [no offence to people who are actually depressed, I mean characters who essentially fake a condition because the author thinks that makes them "Edgy"]
-"Edgy" books...

On a semi serious note, I am actually genuinely curious as to your answers, so if you guys just wanna keep shooting the breeze like the bosses you are then don't let me stop ya!  ;) I really do love the conversations that have been happening on here, you guys have actually answered a lot of questions before I could even ask them! It's helped me to actually commit to knuckling down and hammering out some world-building.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: Straif on June 06, 2014, 05:44:27 PM
Well then we'll certainly keep talking!
And I have to say all your points are solid...but your missing one really big one.

-People who refuse to do things that need to be done even though everyone around them and the situation and probably their own survival instincts are absolutely SCREAMING at them to do. Really...no one is THAT morally straight. Every human has a breaking point.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: GeeBeezy on June 06, 2014, 08:19:41 PM
Aye
That can only work if the character is actually that morally straight that they are aware of the threat but refuse to compromise regardless, thats kind of the whole point of moral codes, if you break it at any point then there is no reason to keep it the rest of the time. E.G. Aang from last airbender. He doesn't kill people. AT ALL. He is entirely aware of what he could accomplish if he did. But he doesn't. Its not stupidity, its refusing to break, and when its portrayed like that you can empathise with the character and respect their decision.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: GeeBeezy on June 06, 2014, 08:24:38 PM
Although I will add this one:
-People who when put in any situation containing conflict or hazards of any sort whatsoever will do NOTHING. They are not conscientious objectors, they are useless. If they trip, they will call for help. If they see a murderer running towards them, they will stand still and scream.

Aight, Rank away!  :)
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: Panzercrappitastica on June 06, 2014, 11:21:47 PM
Well, I'm not sure about numbers - maybe I'll decide later; I don't have that much time now - but both love triangles and the power of friendship can be good if they're written well. And I think the author can have a favorite character as long as the character isn't favored in the writing.

Love triangles can work in two situations:

1# when its more making fun of the concept  a love triangle ( example the whole Deryn, Lillt, Alek thing where  Alek is completely oblivious to the situation.) or when its more of the idea of another person.( example one of my RP characters is in a relationship and is happy with it but feels kind guilty she's still loves her fiance who's been dead for several years, so I guess it's more of a Man vs self situation.)
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: Straif on June 07, 2014, 04:36:26 AM
Yes, thats how you do a love triangle.
Unfortunaly its more often a scaled-down version of the harem mangas of Japan with one central character and two choices of lover.
Ex Bella, Edward and Jacob. Or Katniss, Peeta and Gale.
Or, I have to admit, I wrote something similar in one of my RPs...but then one of the girls defected to the enemy because she thought it would win the boys love and he promptly blew her apart with a gauss rifle.

Most fanficiton are bad. Thats why they're fanfictions. They're written by the untalented masses who aren't imaginative enough to think up their own universe.
Well the majority of them are.

Nope. Love triangles work - like every other kind of plot device does - when the author makes it believable and relatable. That's the sole requirement. After all, story telling is the art of making your audience engage with you no matter what you write Even if it's cliche.

Still working on the protagonist and the supporting characters [namely their personalities].

Anutha updayte! Characters are becoming ever so slightly less character like and more person like. I have started coming up with ideas that appear to actually be coming from my own imagination yet would potentially allow me to include Mons, Benders and summon attacks if I choose to, world building is showing disturbing signs of, dare I say it, uniqueness?!

Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: GeeBeezy on July 29, 2014, 04:21:18 PM
I'm kinda the opposite. World building? Cake! Characters? Um....Well... I have actually started coming up with good characters recently. At least ones that I think I'd find interesting. :/
The thing I have the most trouble with is dialogue, like specifically gems of dialogue, quotable lines. Very few of mine are even remotely quotable.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book

Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: holywalrus2 on July 30, 2014, 03:09:02 AM
Besly, I'm exactly the same. I can easily come up with a completely new culture and think of specific details for a world, but then my characters are just... Meh. They're all the same iterations of exaggerated character tropes... The sarcastic character, the whiny one, the nice one, the shy one, the crazy one. And then my dialogue is boring and I struggle not to make my characters do an exposition like a damn supervillain.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: Panzercrappitastica on July 30, 2014, 03:12:57 AM
I'm pretty good with characters, but I kind of suck at world building. And plot. Possibly why I like roleplaying so much.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: Luna Lovegood on July 30, 2014, 03:30:42 AM
I'm the opposite way, coming up with quotes in a piece of cake for me. A few examples:

"My name's Blowfish, I'm a Blowfish!"
"Chasity Anne Badass Baker doesn't cry"
"Blah, all we needed was an army of sleazy contractors."
"I'm Geezer Man's favorite grandson!"
"Len Charles to the rescue!"
"Elvis pointed to himself and said, 'Wizard'"
"In this situation, aren't we all birds of a feather, flying from the cage together?"
"You're wrong Mr. Poe."
"Wallace! What do you mean you're name's really Jack? Does this mean that Jack's is really Wallace?"
"It's not a sappy romance novel, it's about vampires who fight werewolves for the love of one mortal girl!"-considering this one is said by a teenage boy, it's horrible funny.
"Blowfish! You're a sweaty boy! You're suit is rubber, it does not breath! Drink more fluids!"
"Do you wanna be known as the Jing who was gonged?"
"And the fish did swim."
"Hey little buddy, don't worry about napkins, just use your shirt. I'll do laundry later."
"Oh my God, I have no roots, no connections, I just go where the wind blows, I'm a freaking tumbleweed!"
"Chase, even if you aren't a fibber, you're still a loser, and do you know why? Because is this whole wide world, I'm you're only friend, and I don't even like you!"
"God, I love steel toed boots."
"Contain her! Trash her!"
"What are their weapons? What are their weaknesses?" "They have no weaknesses! The world is their weapon!"
"I'm a Cancer!"
"Uncle Clouy!"
"With every word, it was like he was stabbing me in the heart with his pen, and then writing the words in my own blood."
“Business about a bedpan that was never returned to me. A bedpan, which by extension, belonged to my master.”

I'd recommend not just making characters but setting up the world they are in before you start writing the story. It's easier once you have written down and conceptualized the "universe" your characters live in. What is it they do? Where do they live? What is it like? Who lives there? What is the culture? Society? things like that...

GAAAAH! I'm mid-working out the rewrite and I'm making some serious changes and I need an outside opinion, would you guys be more interested in a fantasy/post apocalyptic/pre-apocalyptic/alternate history/speculative fiction/adaptation set in an ancient/future Roman city or an ancient/future Japanese city?

Um...I don't know. Probably Roman, but a Japanese city sounds cool too.

Prohibition era it is.
I'm planning on writing a story that takes place then, too.
I'm mostly just doing research for it this point.
its going to be a historical fantasy thing.
at first I wasn't sure what area for it take place in.
but then all the sudden I realized where to be and everything started falling into place.

It's kind of annoying because I've been doing research on the geographic area in the time period and I've hardly found anything useful, one article and some photographs but that's it.

I could make up a small town but I want to keep the state the same.
And I didn't want it to just a be a society/ culture that's similar to the roaring twenties I want it to actually be the twenties becausewhat it 's basically going to be was that the first story was going to be about a group of magical creatures from Europe and other continents immigrating to United States in the late 1800's
I was going to start on the second story first which would be about the second generation in the 1920's.

Also if he's one of many you are a very violent author ._.
Which is totally awesome but still a little shocking.

Okay, I've just introduced a character with pale skin who is a murderer who makes out with severed heads.

Also, there is a Dullahan in my book, I REALLY want to call him Horace.

Lastly, just introduced a character whose personality and powers are based around destructive relationships and depression.

Having some sort of negative relationship with their fathers.

Title: Re: I am going to write a book

I think I've decided that my story set in the  1920's isn't going to be a warring factions fantasy novel because I'm setting it in the rural south and when I was explaining it to my brother it's starting to seem like two different stories so I'm going to do a historical fantasy set in a different time period and just do the 1920's about  people just trying to make ends meet on a farm or working in a textile factory.
maybe it will be about a family living in the late twenties early thirties.

Sam doesn't have daddy issues. Unless his dad being dead is an issue. Which I guess technically it is but that isn't what you think of with the phrase "daddy issues".

well with Sam he is kind of upset and mad it is father because his dad did leave and then died, Sam  also never really felt like he was fully a part of the magical community or the non magical world.

Okay so I gotta know guys; If you were to worship a demon, hypothetically, what would your rationale be?
Here's what you know about it:

1: It calls itself a god
2: These people with wings keep on turning up at your door telling you it's a war criminal
3: Should you die, it will make your soul a part of its body
4: It has an extremely violent relationship with others of its kind
5: It sleeps on a hill of gold, obsidian, silver, out of print vampire novels and other treasures

Thoughts?

1: You're crazy.
2: You're evil.
3: You've been brainwashed.
4: It's a convincing liar.
5: You grew up believing it was a god.
Title: Re: I am going to write a book
Post by: Panzercrappitastica on October 16, 2016, 01:57:36 PM
If I grew up believing it was a god, I'd probably see the winged people and those it's violent towards as the bad guys, its treasures as well-deserved, and becoming part of it when I die as a comfort. Or even if I didn't grow up believing it was a god, but it was really convincing
