Title: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: Alexzander on August 10, 2010, 11:25:54 PM
I want a movie made out of the book Leviathan so I am gonna send this post to Scott and tell him about. Please write I, (your name), support making Leviathan into a movie if you do! ;D

It isn't really scott's choice I don't think, although I really would love Leviathan as a movie. If you know any producers or something that might be who to ask.

But of course....

I, Emma-la of the Scott Westerfeld Forum, wholly support making Leviathan into a movie.

Most likely someone's gonna buy the right to make the movie sometime soon, hopefully they actually will!

It takes ages for movie options to go up - they've been talking about Uglies for ages. But I don't think they'll start a movie until all books are out, so they know what they're getting into.

I agree with Deca. Also, If it's meant to be it will happen.

It would be epic if they made the movie well, but I'm worried they would have crappy actord and cut out the good parts.
I Hello_Sailor support a Leviathan movie, but only if it's reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally good.

I fear an overuse of CGI.
Gasp - what if they did ALL CGI? Like A Christmas Carol.
I know that's far fetched, but still... oh the horror!
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: Hello_Sailor on August 12, 2010, 09:05:42 AM
I'd rather have it CGI with good voice actors than naff acting all around.
What if it was animated normally by Disney >o<
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: PerfectlyxImperfect on August 12, 2010, 11:33:58 AM
That would be an epic movie..

But only if they got the actors just right.
And the accents! If everyone talked in the wrong accents, it would ruin the whole movie!

It woulod be awesome if the Clankers actually talked in German and there were subs. But that's coming from a hardcore sub fan.

If they can do a good job then you have my support. If they don't, make no mistake, I will blame you and I will make you pay the price. Glad we had this talk.

A Leviathan movie would be so Awesome! But they would soooo have to get the actors right, and I cannot think of anyone of the top of my head who could do the characters justice. Especially Alek and Deryn. Animation is always good.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: shadley on August 24, 2010, 12:18:36 PM
I could easily see a good Disney production of it, and it being made like the classic Disney.

I can see that too!

Deryn Sharp is my new favorite Disney "Princess!" lol! (mulan belle cinderella and tiana were not princesses... but Deryn likes a prince :D ) omg. that even made sense! :D
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: shadley on August 24, 2010, 12:34:53 PM
it's true that tiana isn't one but I but I like the others for different reasons. Mulan reminds me of Deryn. She dresses up to take her fathers place in the army and turns out to be tough.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: Hello_Sailor on August 24, 2010, 01:17:02 PM
Mulan was always my favorite.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: Khoela on August 24, 2010, 10:42:13 PM
In elementary school I was always torn between Mulan, Ariel and Pocahontas. But I'm mad at Tiana, because the book she's based off was one of my favorites since I was nine, and they made the movie literally NOTHING like it. :P But I love Mulan. Best disney movie ever :D And her name sounds a lot like mine...
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: shadley on August 25, 2010, 07:51:09 AM
My favorite of the princesses would have to be Belle because she loved to read, and was kinda poor unlike a lot of the princesses.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?

lol yes she does rock. i love that story.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: Seven on August 25, 2010, 12:52:33 PM
I love classic Disney! Maybe Deryn could even be an empress, ahem. ;D I definitely like Mulan, and Belle, and Pocahontas because they seem more tangible than some of the other Disney princesses I think of, if that makes sense. I haven’t seen the Princess and the Frog but I want to.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: shadley on August 27, 2010, 11:40:14 AM
It did look good, but I'm not sure about it, all the other disney movies followed the originally fairy tales pretty well.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: Hello_Sailor on August 29, 2010, 03:46:34 AM
I liked the Princess and the Frog. The animation was great.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: tridecagirl on August 29, 2010, 11:39:59 AM
See, the Princess and the Frog is really twisted. And no Disney movie really follows the ORIGINAL fairy tale. In the LIttle Mermaid, original version, she's supposed to kill the prince because he picks a different girl. She doesn't, and instead turns into foam. Yay.
And don't get me started with Cinderella and people cutting their toes off.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: shadley on August 29, 2010, 12:15:31 PM
I have read some of the original's and I guess what I meant to say was the princess and the frog went way off from it's story where as the classic disney followed the plot somewhat. I read the cinderella one too, gross huh. I did like the part about the tree with the birds helping Cindy though. Oh and in Snow white, the apple isn't poison it just gets stuck in her throat. While the prince is moving coffin, it gets bumped and the apple comes loose.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?

OMG, I didn't even think of Miyazaki! He would be the perfect person to make it. I love his movies, Spirited Away is like the new Wizard of Oz.

Here's the story on the princess and the frog: One of my favorite authors as a kid, ED Baker, who sent me a t-shirt :D wrote this epic version where the princess turns into a frog. It took place in the middle ages and the princess was named Emerelda (Emma) and it was a great book. But Disney started making a movie of it, and they added in a chamber maid that isn't really mentioned in the book except for once, but made her a bigger character and she happened to be black. Someone said it was racist that the only black character was a chamber maid, so Disney decided to make the main princess black. Then they came up with the whole Louisiana theme and changed EVERYTHING.
Personally I think the original book by ED Baker would make an awesome movie as it was :(
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?

Leviathan would be cool in almost any anime format, but especially Miyazaki.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: monkeys_r_us on August 31, 2010, 07:53:01 AM
I know! It would be so perfect! Especially since his stories have included steampunk, flying (in every one of his movies except Princess Mononoke), war, and even genetically engineered animals, so he'd already have experience with all that stuff.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?

It would be kinda cool if Tim Burton did it too, but then there's the whole actor conflict...

Everyone here does realise if theres a leviathan movie their gonna cut out half the scenes and change everything to a more "Hollywood" kinda thing?
But, if there was an anime movie, with the same kind of art in the books, I would at least enjoy the animation.

Oh, and does anyone here know how well anime and steampunk go together?
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: jackal on September 28, 2010, 02:35:20 PM
Seriously, anime goes REALLY WELL with steampunk.
If you've seen a movie called steamboy, you'll know what I mean.
And theres this other one called something like castle in the sky, I think its remotely steampunk.

Castle in the Sky rocks! Never seen Steamboy though, but I've been meaning to.

I completely agree!! Both of those movies are amazing works of art; the styles would fit fantastically with Leviathan!

And hahaaa, I'm glad Tim Burton was brought up, too. xD I was discussing the potential for a Leviathan movie with... someone (I forget who. xD) Tim Burton's sort of movie style would be pretty neat, what with all the crazy critters in Leviathan. I'm not really sure it would be ~*the best like evarrr*~ way for it to be adapted, but it's a fun idea to toss around. :]

It's INCREDIBLE! Muska is my favorite villain EVER!!
And I think that Castle in the Sky is one of the few instances where the English dub was better than the Japanese dub. Cloris Leachman as Dola and Mark Hamill as Muska just worked out so well!

MIYAZAKI!!  (http://serve.mysmiley.net/jumping/jumping0047.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)

Castle in the Sky was great!  There's this one part, near the end, that my sister and I can't help cracking up at, though.  It's when the bad guy, Muska, is chasing the kids - it was just the way Muska was moving, something about it was just hilarious!  ;D

My favorite Miyazaki movies are 1.Princess Mononoke 2.Howl's Moving Castle and 3.Spirited Away.

My fav is most definitely Spirited Away( although I haven't seen all his work), Howl's moving castle is good, but after reading the book I like the book better.

The Howls' Moving Castle book is really awesome. :D I read it a little bit after the movie came out, and I fell in love, haha. xD

Princess Mononoke is probably my favorite Miyazaki movie, too. One of the first I ever saw, I think. It's amazing. <3

It is!
The first one I ever saw was Kiki's Delivery Service.
In fact, I just watched it for the first time in over 10 years with my friend a couple weeks ago and we completely geeked out when they mentioned lighter-than-air travel, because my friend had just gotten to the part in Leviathan that mentioned it.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?

There are a lot of things to consider when making the movie, the primary thing is the fans. Fans would easily make up the largest demographic in seeing a Leviathan movie, so they would have to work harder than usual. They might make a really good movie, but if they miss out on a lot of things that the fans liked then it won't work. However, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I, Clockwork Mind, support the creation of a Leviathan movie.

Forget Leviathan the movie! How about... Leviathan the on-ice ballet! Just kidding.

Behemoth could be in a swimming pool like that play Metamorphoses. (the one about mythology, not bug transformation). XD

My sister and I were talking about it and just got the funniest image. I really do hope they make a movie, because it has all of the elements that make a really cool movie. Maybe if Uglies is successful.

Oooh, a Leviathan movie!!! That would be fantastic!

As great as live-action or CG is, I don't feel like it could capture the sheer enormity of the Leviathan or the power and destruction of Clanker dreadnoughts like good old-fashioned hand drawn animation could.

Especially the folks at Studio Ghibli (hello, Hayao Miyazaki) with a fantastic score by Joe Hisaishi or the lovely people behind Steamboy (which, by the way, is a STAPLE anime steampunk movie that ANY self-respecting steampunk anime fan should see at some point!!!)

Just my two-cents. I feel like anime, especially, is the only style of film that could capture all of the epic that is Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan. (...and Alek would make a great bishie, just sayin'... :3)

I don't get how he could stretch the entire first season of the show to a 2 hour movie without getting some of the good details like the kyoshi warriors and how he took away all the funny aspects of the story and made Aang like 6 years old. Not to mention how they change some of the pronunciations of the names, they said aang weird and sokka weird.

Okay, this is what I'd like to see:
animated movie: drawn by Studio Ghibli, directed by Miyazaki-sensei

live action:
director: either Christopher Nolan, Guillermo del Toro or Clint Eastwood or a director who will use the minimum of CG I and will not make or convert the film into 3D! I'm sick and tiered of 3D and especially bad 3D (I'm looking at you The Last Airbender and Clash of the Titans  >:(!)

producer: Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks would be ideal

cast: new, young actors for Alek and Deryn who are from Austria and Scotland respectively. Cate Blanchett for Barlow and Christoph Waltz for Volger

composer: because I think that music really sets the tone and atmosphere of a film and can make or brake a film, I want either Ennio Morricone (A Fistful of Dollars, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West), Hans Zimmer (Inception, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Dark Knight, The Lion King, Gladiator and Modern Warfare 2), John Williams (Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Jaws, Schindler's List, the first three Harry Potter movies, and Memoirs of a Geisha... just to name a few) or Clint Eastwood (Mystic River, Grace is Gone, and Changeling).

Yes, yes, yes.  Absolutely.  And to your excellent list I would add: BEAR MCCREARY.  (First of all, c'mon, his name is Bear, and that's awesome.)  So far he's only mostly done TV shows, but goodness gracious, it's a list - Battlestar Galactica, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Eureka, Human Target, The Walking Dead, etc.  He does a lot with unusual/ethnic instruments, which I think would really work for the Leviathan universe.  (For example, this cue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q0jqG6KXuE) is totally Behemoth.)

Another thing I didn't like was the way they did the bending in the movie. They would do all these types of karate moves and the Earth/air/water/fire wouldn't react until the end while in the show it was better because the element moved with them.

Yea it is very hard to do live action bending, but I think they could've done better. A LOT better.

Seriously whenever they would bend I would want to laugh or I was just bored because by the time it took for someone to bend I could have ran up and smacked them down. It confused me how any army with benders could win.

Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?

no, it affects OUR set of mind, for reading the books. we'll never picture Deryn as Keith Thompson's Deryn, we'll always see her as, "that actor who played Deryn."
and i don't want that to happen.

If Miyazaki did Leviathan I would just DIE. In a good way. :D That would be the best. Plus, the fantabulous artists at Studio Ghibli already have some experience drawing things like walkers, (Howl's Moving Castle, helloooo! Plus it's so steampunk!) and flying scenes and stuff. Plus you know Miyazaki can get any actor in the world. ;)

I agree however that at least Goliath should be released before the movie is made.

And oh yeah, The Last Airbender sucked hard core. Me and my sister couldn't stop making fun of the bending, especially at that one part where like  twenty earthbenders were all bending at the same time, and the most they could bend was a rock the size of a small car? These are fully trained adult benders we're talking about! Plus, he includes Haru but not the Kyoshi warriors? What's that about? All the humor was sucked out, which really sucked since that's what makes ATLA awesome. And Katara and Sokka are not white, they're Inuit, and Zuko's gotta be the palest character in the series! Probably the best part was at the end when Iroh shoots fire from his arms and all the Fire Nation soldiers are freaking out because "He's making fire out of thin air!" I just thought that was hilarious, because, um, that's kinda what firebenders do. *facepalm*

Yeah, that's my rant about the ATLA movie. ^^

(I feel like this has turned into a huge bucket of M. Night hate. And while I think that's cool, shouldn't this thread be about a Leviathan film...?)

Now that you've all started talking about directors and such, I'm thinking back to everything else. Who would write the score? I feel like it would be something really different and out there, considering the two very polar worlds that Alek and Deryn live in, y'know?

After I listened to the Sherlock Holmes score I started thinking that Hans Zimmer wouldn't be a bad choice. Nor would Joe Hisaishi. His stuff is just gorgeous with so much... I don't know. Its very whimsical sometimes, but a lot of it has a thick air of solemnity and such. I think its fitting of the series.

Kind of like Moulin Rouge with all of the modern songs done in an old fashioned style??  :)

And the 1920s are super cool. Alek and Deryn are so lucky. They will be in their 20s in the 20s. XD I know Deryn will be having a lot of fun.

That would be an epic movie..

But only if they got the actors just right.
And the accents! If everyone talked in the wrong accents, it would ruin the whole movie!

The thing I wouldn't mind is the accents because if you find the PERFECT person and they don't have the right accent, most people will overlook it and if the person's amazing, it will be amazing too!
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: Seven on February 22, 2011, 03:20:10 AM
I would not overlook it. Accents are a part of the characters. Plus I have been brainwashed by the audiotape. If they are good actors then they should be able to pull off a good authentic accent.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: LiterateChick on February 22, 2011, 03:51:57 AM
Yeah, if they are amazing and perfect for the part they can be taught the proper accents easy. Take Gerard Butler for example, if you've ever seen him in interviews you know he has a really thick Scottish accent, but in most of his movies you'd never know, because he was taught how to speak in an American accent. If the actors they find for the part are as amazing as they need to be to portray the characters they can learn the accents they need to make the part work. :D

However, for a soundtrack (I know, you don't want any more comments about the soundtrack. Too bad, you get one anyway!), I think that Two Steps From Hell should factor in heavily. Or maybe they could even get John Williams to do an original soundtrack!!!

Okay, I can see Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Barlow, personally. Idk if Burton’s the right pick, although it might work- I have a preference for Steven Spielberg myself, though I’ve heard Christopher Nolan is good too. I agree with using Keith Thompson for help, but I see the movie working in both live action and anime. Either way, for the live action, the special effects will have to be Jurassic Park or Avatar good, otherwise I shall be mad. I’ve never seen Miyazaki’s work, so I don’t know how that’d work.

As for the cast… I would quite happily play Deryn, eheheh. Blondish hair, blue eyes. I’m kinda short, though, and not the scrawny skinny she’s described as in the book. Oh well :P But I agree with bookie16 on new actors that are the age of the actually characters for once.

I have no idea who could do music. Music is not my thing at ALL, but it really sets the tone of it like bookie16 said. Oh, maybe, like ForeverBookworm said, Two Steps From Hell. That would work perfectly.

One thing I hope they don’t do… Don’t use the Wilhelm scream. This sort of movie does not call for a Wilhelm scream. It’s funny, but amateur. Please no >.< So, DON’T LET GEORGE LUCAS DIRECT. He includes it in every movie, and I don’t think he has the right style for this anyway.

And what exactly is a Wilhelm screen? ???

Scott said on Twitter not too long ago that Leviathan has been optioned by Hollywood so that gives me hope. :)

I'm glad you like my suggestion! I just think that they're perfect for Leviathan. Also, I agree that Helena Bonham Carter would be a good Dr. Barlow.

The Wilhelm scream is a rather default sound effect that you've probably heard for someone falling or being thrown from an explosion or the like. It's in nearly everything, it seems, from Up and Indiana Jones to Star Wars and Primeval.

I sympathize with you. One of my best buddies is 6' 7" (I'm barely 5' 4"). I always feel kind of bad for him; he never has enough leg room under the school desks. ::)

But being tall has some advantages! He's always super easy to find him in a crowd. And he gives the best hugs! The kind where you're lifted off your feet. :)

...perhaps we shall get back to the film. Again.

When it comes to directors, no George Lucas. David Yates, maybe. And the person who directed Super 8 whose name escapes me wouldn't be a bad choice either.

If it was Miyazaki, I would be really upset if he did what he did with Howl's Moving Castle. I've read the book and seen the movie and I love both dearly, but... if he made Leviathan I'd be really upset if he did that again.

Score: John Powell, anyone?

I'm with you Alexzander, PLEASE Mr. Westerfeld (and those who would ultimately be responsible for it's creation) consider this story.
Actually Alex now that I think about it, you should be hittin' up a known screenwriter, with a copy of the book... I'm pretty sure
once it gets to pre-production (or even CONSIDERATION phase) it's outta mr. westerfelds hands, and him having little or even NO
say in the matter. There'll be some considerable changes to plot and such. BUT I'm still for it. I have faith we won't be let down.
SOMEONE MAKE IT SO!... please.

Also push for live action, this story doesn't deserve any less than Peter Jackson, or David Yates, or even Zack Snyder for
visual epicness...

I use to think this book would be great for a movie, but I kinda wonder now.

There are just some things that work in books that don't work in movies.

Wouldn't seeing a lot of mythical beasts look strange in the movie, and also fake?  I mean, a lot of the scenes will involve being inside a whale!

The machines could also look strange and cartoony...  Mechanical elephants?  Spider-like machines?

I kind of feel like the movie might kind of have the same feel as the movie adaption of Series of Misfortunate Events.  That movie felt cartoony and aimed for young pre-teens.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for this movie to work, but I just wonder about that..

If someone else gets there before me, I'd at least hope they're a fan. I believe that a fan of the book/series/etc would do the best job at turning something into a film.

It would be so tricky to make Leviathan into a movie. Books never fully transfer to the screen right. However, the cool thing about it is that all the CGI put into it will take the Beasties and the Clankers and bring them to life. I think that would be a MAJOR reason for me to actually see Leviathan on the big screen. Just to see all the creatures brought to life.  :D

I support a movie of Leviathan if the movie makers actually work with Scott and make it at least almost exactly like the book.

I hate it when movies cut every single good part or interperutes the scenes incorrectly. Ex: City of Ember A giant moth appears in the begining and the mayor gets killed by the mole instead of falling into the river and drowning. Worst movie remake of a book EVER according to my opinion.
It ahould be as good as Harry Potter at least in closeness.

What was worst about Eragon was that, although they actually tried to follow the book quite closely, they somehow failed to get what the book was about. XD

I watched Eragon. But have you seen City of Ember? It's still fails more in my opinion. It fails to get as close to the book as possible, AND fails the storyline, AND fails the acting. In the movie the actors scream as widly as possible while traveling in a boat that is also a locker without oars down a water slide. In the book, the characters barely scream at all as the water was really calm while sitting in a REAL rowboat for 2 with oars. The movie exagerated the danger for EVERY single thing.

I fear an overuse of CGI.
Gasp - what if they did ALL CGI? Like A Christmas Carol.
I know that's far fetched, but still... oh the horror!

Or Beowulf. -dies inside-

As for the City of Ember vs Eragon "worst movie ever" battle, I haven't seen City of Ember, but I loved the book.  I should probably watch it so I know what I'm talking about, so I will not compare the two.

Eragon, however, is one of the worst movies ever in my book (again, City of Ember is not in the running as I have not seen it, though The Last Airbender is. I think it's a tossup between Airbender and Eragon for the title).
Sure, it was pretty, but they couldn't make the sequels because they left out key plot points. Like, major plot points that the sequels revolve around. Also, they dumbed it down so much that some parts didn't make sense.  The acting is decent compared to some other movies, but not up to par with any movie that appeals to those over the age of 6. I hate the movie with a fiery passion. At least The Last Airbender is stupid enough to make fun of. Eragon is just a trainwreck.

MIGHT I REMIND PEOPLE THAT THE PRODUCER OF ERAGON IS NOW PRODUCING UGLIES.

Pray, people. Pray with all your heart, mind, body, and soul to whatever you believe in that John Davis doesn't F this up.

Yes indeed. 'Eragon The Game' got 4.5 out of 10 on IGN with the main comment being,'Is there supposed to be a story line in there somewhere.' It made 'Avatar The Game' seem like a god!
What's with all the 'The Game' or 'The Movie' in all the titles anyway?

I refuse to even grant that thought enough time to form fully in my brain.

I'm majoring in animation right now, and I strongly believe that there is a time and a place for CGI.
Then again, I also strongly believe that there is a time and a place for stereoscopy, but hey, what do I know?
Apparently nothing according to the public.

You can tell I'm not a fan for 3D.

Someone should make a website or something with a petition to the producers and to whom it may concern, you know so they can hear the voice of the people. Perhaps they may consider it, and who knows what can happen if a lot of people felt the same way most of you do and got involved. Then maybe Scott would catch wind of it and intervene and negotiate on our behalf. Also think of the possibilities of fan casts and other crazy things that could happen. All we can do is try.

I support the movie ONLY if Scott is involved. So many books, tv series ect ect get F***ed up and ruined because the people in charge of the movie take out the wrong things or put in their own "ideas" and then it ruins it. They think we the fans would never notice. But WE are the ones who point it out and as the audience become disappointed, angry, or sad because of it.

So I would support a movie only if the creator is involved. ...and its not 3D.

Naughty-ness has a time and a place... that place is not aboard the Leviathan. There's not really any romance in the books besides Deryn being in love with Alek and him being completely oblivious. (Has anyone else noticed that in Leviathan Deryn doesn't really have any sort of crush on him or anything, then in Behemoth she's like, in love with him.) But yeah.... let's be true to the books.

(I understand that you're most likey joking, if so, excuse my rant... except for the part about Deryn spontaniously falling in love with him... That part has always mystified me.)

Yeah, no naughty-ness at all. That's what I like about the book and Alek and Deryn's relationship. Warm and fluffy ^^ Deryn doesn't show much in Leviathan until at least near the end where she starts to get a soft spot for him. But she doesn't really fall for him until Behemoth.

Well there are hints of it at the end of Leviathan. The "tingling" left behind when he hugs her, and then her abandoning lookout on the topside to watch him through her binoculars :P And then you have to take in the time between Leviathan and Behemoth... during which a crush might reach full storm.
But yeah, I know what you mean.

Well, if and when they ever do make a Leviathan film, we have hope that it will be good; we saw what they did with the Hunger Games, proving it's possible to do good work with as series like that, and currently the Mortal Engines movie is being made by Peter Jackson. So fingers crossed they don't forget what they learned along the way.

Also, to DeathChicken; seriously? Come on. Anime is not "gay", no matter what you may think. And honestly, doing a Leviathan film Studio Ghibli style would probably be one of the best ways to actually get it out. We know they handle steampunk well; look at Steamboy and Castle in the Sky.

I've seen pictures of the steam powered monowheel , when it's running from.the train?

And I got to fire the steam whistle on it, and  before we put it in the shed, I got to purge the boiler.   Big cloud of steam shooting out of the engine and hitting the tin on the wall( wasn't om the wall for long after that)  and listning to the boiler cooling down was the coolest part. Sounded like thor the god of thunder was playing band hero on a oil drum inside of it.

Actually, it's running from a steam-powered car-tank thing. The train just gets in teh way of teh chase.

That's one of the coolest things about steam and machines; the noises they make. Have you ever heard the sound of a WWI era tank's engine cooling down? It's like three death metal bands trying to out-rock each other with drum solos.

Yeah. It's AWESOME. There's a picture I saw of my grandpa standing with the guy he took it from. Well, what's left of him after Grandpa fed his face a .45 M1911 round.
So many cool guns from that war...

That's cool, my grandpa was a combat engineer.  He built bridges and roads and junk.   Apparently the coral roads on okinawa are HELL on tires when the coral is still fresh.

Yes,   but only problem with being short is that taller people can run faster... but I can out turn them with no problems.  Its funny how bad they fail when they try to mimmic my skills.   I can run at the edge of the stage in the auditorium, long jump to the chairs run acrost the tops of the chairs (like a boss) but if any of the other goons try it, the plastic buckles and they hurtthemselves.

Well they did pretty good with Harry potter and hunger games so MAYBE they could do leviathan justice.  At least I hope.

Boneshaker and Mortal Engines, (Both steampunk YA books) are both due for movies, with Mortal Engines supposedly being released late this year. Hopefully then Leviathan would be picked up, if steampunk catches along. But part of me does not want Steampunk and Leviathan to go mainstream, like everything when a movie is made.

I'm in the process of reading Mortal Engines, it's pretty good so far, I accidentally spoilt the ending of the quatlert, and a part of me just died. It's no spoiler to say it's probably the series that spans the longest duration (in terms of timeline spent with characters).

Do not speak of that clart. The PJ film was an insult. Pathetic in the extreme.
And it's offical; if they screw with Leviathan, we fans of the series won't take it like the Twilighters and Demigods did. Oh no, we'll cause HAVOK. And PAIN.
Also: Swear with me now that, when the Leviathan movie comes out, you will all go see it in costume and in character.

Woah...that would actually be pretty cool...

To Nahtaivel.

I always have to actually spell out "leviathan" whenever I spell Nahtaivel and then literally spell it backwards.

You may have come up with the title, Bram-chan, but I came up with the actual story. Which makes me at least ten times more awesome than you.

Anchorgurl, you know the part of Leviathan where Alek stands in front of the ruined Stormwalker looking boss while a bunch of Germans shoot at him? That's him committing suicide.

See I thought he was actually using his psychic powers to set the airship on fire.

nah, he's just weird.

Excuse me?  Totally my idea for the story.

you said you wanted to be in the book to laugh at alek getting kicked in the head, then i said, "FANFIC IDEA!" therefore it was my idea. plus i made up that an alien sent us there.

It inhibits his powers, Volger gave it to him to control him. Alek threw it off the topside when he found out (also something romantic, taking the romance out of that scene is akin to blasphemy).

Go the animated route. Seems like a better idea to me. Get Hayau Miazaki and Studio Ghibli to do it, then get that voice actor from Brave for Deryn. Alek's a bit harder to find though...

I would love to see a Leviathan movie! But they would have to stay really close to the real plot. Hey, what if Scott Westerfeld wrote the movie?  ;D

Also, I found the perfect person to play Volger! The actor is named Basil Rathbone. He fenced in real life! I say fenced, though, because I think he's dead. He was in the Mark of Zorro in the 1940's, so he's probably dead... but look him up! I can't figure out how to put a picture on here!

I don't know about a movie, honestly, but it would make a great anime series. It seems nigh-perfect in its flow and content to fit that format, from the age of the protagonists to the dashing, competent heroine and the brooding, tragic hero as well as the will-they-won't-they of their relationship.

Furthermore, given the success of similar Steampunk titles like Last Exile, Steamboy and (of course) Fullmetal Alchemist, the audience for Leviathan already exists.

That's not to say a movie isn't doable, but it might require cutting a lot from the book as well as dealing with the backlash from the homophobes upset by a girl pretending to be a boy, regardless of her preferences.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: BlueberryDoughnut on June 15, 2013, 01:23:03 PM
I think a Leviathan movie would be completely awesome--if done correctly.

Take, for instance, the Percy Jackson movies. I absolutely loved the books, and I was extremely psyched for the movie adaptation, but it sucked. It had little to nothing in common with the novel; I don't think the screenplay writer even read it. So, for me anyway, it'd have to be as close to the book as possible. And don't even get me started on casting, the characters' accents, or the special effects; they'd have to be near perfect, as well. I mean, I understand that it's not going to be exactly perfect, but still, there's no need to deviate really far from the book.

Then again, I tend to set my standards ridiculously high, so who knows, maybe I'm alone in thinking this way :P Oh well. That's just my opinion.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?

So... I think a Leviathan movie would be really cool as long as they did it right. They would have to look right, illustrations leave no room for acceptable error. I would like it if they spoke German with subtitles in the beginning (I just saw a movie that did that, so it can be done!) It would have to be accurate to the events. BOVRIL WOULD MOST CERTAINLY HAVE TO EXIST. Their accents would have to be right (the most potential mistake I see is making Deryn have an English accent). HOPEFULLY, Bovril won't imitate voices. Acting would have to be good. Deryn couldn't look like a girl. Eh... :-\ Movies that mess up the book really bother me (I'm looking at YOU, Lightning Thief movie!) So, yeah, I'm with BlueberryDoughnut. You are not alone, I have ridiculously high standards. (Today, they were almost-almost, but not quite (so freaking close...)- met with the movie adaption of The Outsiders.)

Fuck yes, TSFH all the wayyyyyy, so glad to meet someone who knows and appreciates them
Favorite music group ever. Whenever people ask me what my fav band is I just say TSFH even though it's not a band. Then they're all like, damn never heard of it but sounds like a fucking cool name, which it is.

Going back to the movie:
I agree with all the recent comments in that it must be absolutely perfect. I want actual German, not like heavily accented English all the time, and yes of course Deryn must have a Scottish accent. I want the CGI to be perfect as well. And they should actually build mock-ups of cities like London and Istanbul, not just CGI in the buildings, that would be great.

After watching Pacific Rim, which is sorta like Clanker vs. Darwinist x1million, I'd say I would be fine with del Toro as the director if he ever takes an interest. And yes, ABSOLUTE no to Michael Bay and M. Night Sha-whateverhisnameis. My fav format would probably be like Steamboy.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?

SOMEONE ELSE MAKES THE PR/LEVIATHAN CONNECTION!
Del Toro as director, the Steamboy studio for production.
And, since its a movie, some new scenes not seen in teh book.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?

Yeah, I made the realization halfway through the movie because the way that kaiju was swimming through to HK harbor reminded me of the behemoth, and then I was like  :o CANNOT UNSEE.

And yes! I would love to have new scenes, whatever they can come up with. The one thing that turns me off about the books is how un-WWI they are. Most of historical WWI was fought as a stalemate attrition war but this one we don't even know. Is it a highly mobile war or did they hold the line against each other? Trenches in this case is useless since the average land dreadnought can level a town by itself.

Ofc with Deryn and Alek both on one ship that seemed very intent on globetrotting, Scott couldn't really write about the actual war, but I would've definitely liked some more details and battles.

I have to disagree with LBG being better than Harry Potter... Those will always be my favorite books. But they're certainly better than Hunger Games (to me), and would make a better movie, too.

I wouldn't say that one series is better than another, it's all relative to your own taste. I hate fantasy for once, so I dislike Harry Potter.

Though, Leviathan is probably one of those underrated book series that deserve more credit. More credit. Not more attention. Too much attention can turn a series to overrated. And then you start getting piles of reprints sitting in a corner with no one wanting it.

Yes. The whole steampunk genre needs more credit. I mean, plenty of people know about it, but not many people really know what it is. Leviathan is fairly well-known, but needs more awesomeness points.

I do agree that steampunk needs more credit. It's an amazing culture. I think that if they made Levithan the movie, there would be a complete steampunk revolution, which in my opinion wouldn't be a bad thing.
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: Areias on September 02, 2013, 05:39:17 AM
Not better than HP IMO; that world is much more fleshed out and engaging. But Levi is very good in its own right.

Also, if only Steamboy had better publicists and advertisements, we may already have a popular steampunk subgenre in films. If it had done well in international box offices people will know of these types of things and there will be a market demand for them, justifying the bigger companies to spend money on their production. Things like Twilight and its unholy spin-offs never fail to get funding, because the companies know they can bank on a good box office performance.

I personally think that if they were to make a movie it would have to include all three books. I know what your thinking you've read all three books and you really want that movie, but its like that for every book that ive personally read. Also its not up to Scott to make the movie or not its the movie producers who have read or have someone read it for them and tell them what they think on it. For all those who want a movie based on the Leviathan series lets just hope that some movie producers daughter or son reads it and tells their father or mother. -Sean

Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: Areias on April 15, 2014, 09:05:42 PM
I'm afraid there isn't a whole lot Westerfeld can do if he sells the rights for a film adaptation. I think he can take back those rights up to a certain point but the process is largely out of his hands unless he demands strongly enough to be included, or if the decision-makers allowed him to do so. For films like these, they will constantly be trying to up and replicate the success of teen adventure stories like Hunger Games, so I don't think they'd be very faithful to the author's ideas to be brutally honest.

And a three-in-one is also quite likely, unless they think 1 book is enough for a solid 1.5-2 hrs (which it is, but not when teen movie directors are cutting scenes left right and center); in fact, most of the time it's not even the director's idea to do things like this. Plus, most films are never sure of the sequel (look at the Golden Compass; so much potential wasted). The only hope for a faithful, in-depth adaptation of the Leviathan trilogy is if we get someone worth huge bucks who can secure enough funding, no-questions-asked, for a straight 3 movies to film at their pleasure. People like Guillermo del Toro, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, or Steven Spielberg, whose names pretty much ensure a solid investment for film companies. (though why they keep funding M. Night Shyamalan movies, I'll never know)

Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: BlueberryDoughnut on April 16, 2014, 08:34:11 AM
I agree; the only things Leviathan needs are actors, producers, set designers, and the like. It's already action-packed and awesome; no one needs to change it. Although I think a TV show might be a better route for Leviathan as opposed to a movie. A TV show would have more time to properly develop everything, I think.

I know the topic is a bit old(1 month) but I was thinking that it would be epic! Even if I think it will be difficult(maybe) to find an actress to interpret Deryn as Dylan(so the actress should be like a boy) for three films. Yes, because they HAVE TO be three films...
The problem that there isn't a film yet is not due to Scott but... there aren't producers, right? Or am I wrong?
Title: Re: Leviathan Movie?
Post by: Straif on May 31, 2014, 08:21:49 AM
Both. Also, it would be suicide to release a teen novel movie right now. Divergent tried and it got shot so full of holes I could strain pasta with it.
And the answer is quite obvious...we just have it be an animated movie. No fuss with the actors looks. No compromises like with Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss...
