Title: Landfills
Post by: tridecagirl on August 25, 2010, 10:18:54 AM
DOes anyone really think about the fact that all of our trash - our food, our papers, our junk, our hazardous waste (or at least some of it) - gets buried underground. Like, not crushed, burned, purified, just dumped in there and forgotten about?

How can that be good for our planet? Eventually we'll be living in cities of trash, because we can't just hide it away forever.

Sometimes I hate humanity.

I heard even recycling causes polution. Gosh, Rusties are stupid.

I agree
I've always wonder why they don't find something else to do to it...I hate humanity too sometimes

I think this is a turning point for us. Either add wind and sun power generators, cleaner cars, and  get a good waste system, or turn the planet into Venus. Why hadn't we changed things sooner?

Turning point.... Naw, I think the crash's the turning point. Either we go prettytime, or we all get ruined.

Post by: Noelle-wa on August 26, 2010, 06:31:42 AM
We are stupid. Or at least most of us are. We can try! Why not? I don't get why throwing something into a bin thats 3 feet away is so much harder than one thats 2 feet away. Ughh. I like the Venus idea. Or maybe even Mars. The problem with prettytime is that, we all know what's going to happen, so...
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Maze-la on August 26, 2010, 11:03:35 AM
if it happens, it will soon. 300 years in the future, they say 300 years in the psat the crash happened. (maybe the spike of the turning point is the crash... lol) why mars? Venus is a planet much like earth that has poisinous gasses. Maybe we came from Venus millions of years ago, and Earth is going to have the same fate... lol

Hahaha, at this rate, that's very likely.
Title: Re: Landfills

:'( It's not like there's anywhere else to go... we're stuck here. I wish people would realize that and stop trashing the planet.
I do river cleanups and forest cleanups sometiems, and we'll fill huge trash bags in like 10 yards. It's horrible.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Beth-la on August 28, 2010, 08:06:11 AM
At the rate we are going, humanity might not survive for much longer.
Title: Re: Landfills

I know, it sucks. My mom, sister, and i are huge environmentalists. We try our best. Well, hopefully there's other people out there like us that acctually care.
I guess that's all we can hope for  :(
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Beth-la on August 28, 2010, 08:09:27 AM
Well, I recycle and stuff, I never litter cause that's gross, and some other things, but that's it.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Noelle-wa on August 28, 2010, 08:11:54 AM
That's good enough. Like if everyone did the little things, it would help :)

Sorry to be a pain but as much as I hate landfills, have you heard about waste management's Altamonte, ca landfill? Wind farm, and innovation center for green technology. Also a favorite spot of the mythbusters. Just my two cents.
Title: Re: Landfills

I forgot about waste management. Jeez, how could I forget about that?

And that trash messes up our fresh water soon we won't have drinking water. 2050 that's what scientists are saying.

Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Hello_Sailor on August 29, 2010, 03:55:04 AM
There really aren't many options for waste, really. Anything you do pollutes of takes up space, or something. The only thing people can really do is reduce and reuse.
Title: Re: Landfills

Agreed
Title: Re: Landfills

Title: Re: Landfills

Do you have any suggestions to fix?
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: queenfrogs on August 29, 2010, 04:41:02 AM
Me? Well, pretty much recycling and conserving water.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Beth-la on August 29, 2010, 04:48:55 AM
I don't think that's enough. We need to get someone that's actually smart, not someone who claims to be smart but is really a dumbass, put them in charge, and let them come up with a plan to help the Earth. We have to LISTEN to them. Nobody ever listens!!!! That's the problem with this world. People need to just shut up, get off their high horse and LISTEN. We could actually maybe save the Earth if we listened. We need new strategies! Not just conserving water and recycling, not wind energy and solar energy, something new! Those things aren't enough! They'll preserve the Earth a bit longer, but it won't actually save it.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: queenfrogs on August 29, 2010, 04:56:02 AM
Yeah that's true. And just think about how much money is spent on elections! That money could go to this cause! And until people step up we need to do what we can.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Beth-la on August 29, 2010, 05:02:56 AM
And taxes!
And also, the oil spill is really polluting SO much water off Florida's, Louisiana's, Alabama's,and Mississippi's coast. I went to the beach last week, and it's really ugly. I got into the water, and it's was even grosser. I accidentally swallowed a little water, and now my throat is killing me. It's because of the remnants of oil to tiny to see. You always swallow a little water when you go to the beach, but you never get sick. Now you can't even swim in the water without getting sick.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: queenfrogs on August 29, 2010, 05:07:18 AM
Seriously! Stupid BP!!! We were already having problems! It's time the elected officials step up and keep their promises!
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Beth-la on August 29, 2010, 05:10:44 AM
Promises promises. Just a little word. Doesn't mean anything. The government is saying that the oil spill isn't affecting us that much, so they don't have to pay. People are committing suicide because they've lost everything due to the oil spill. It's horrible. I know we are in recession or whatever, but this is a real crisis.

it's really sad. that's why I decided already to go into environmental engineering. My HS has a program dedicated to environmental science. Also it gives you OSHA HazMat certification. I'm going to help save the world.

I was down in Disney World the last 2 weeks. I asked my parents if I could go help with the cleanup instead. guess what their answer was.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Beth-la on August 29, 2010, 05:22:03 AM
Sigh....parents. Disney world is only 8 hours from where I live. 8 1/2 hours from my beach. Though I haven't been there in like 5 years. I want to help with the spill, but you have to be 18 or older because the fumes are hazardous.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: James-chan on August 29, 2010, 05:24:16 AM
Ya. i found that out. i also found out that massachusetts only has 6 HazMat response teams for the entire state
Title: Re: Landfills

Huh. That's not many at all. I wonder how many Florida has....

let me check...
Title: Re: Landfills

I would think a good few. What with the spill and such....
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: James-chan on August 29, 2010, 05:50:08 AM
Florida has four teams throughout the state, each with between one and three HazMat units.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Beth-la on August 29, 2010, 05:52:28 AM
Huh. I guess that's all right. Kinda disappointing. I was hoping for like, 80. Nah, just kidding. :D
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: James-chan on August 29, 2010, 05:56:18 AM
depending on risk level, states are required to have a certain number of response teams and/or departments with their own units. My department has three. http://www.mocpages.com/folder.php/99265
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Beth-la on August 29, 2010, 06:00:01 AM
Hm.....I still think there should be more here. More everywhere, really. Just in case.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: James-chan on August 29, 2010, 06:02:02 AM
oh dont get me wrong, there definetly should be at least one unit in every county. I disagree with the fact Essex County doesn't have one. Every other county has at least one. But the way MA does it is by dividing us into districts. Salem is in HazMat District 6.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Beth-la on August 29, 2010, 06:09:55 AM
I really doubt my county has one. We're too cheap, and even if we could, the board would rather do something stupid like build a park or expand the busy streets. Wait, I just looked it up. We have one. ''Established in 2006 by the generosity (cough snort cough) of Florida.'' Generosity. Snort. They probably had to because someone made a petition or some important person complained. But I like that we have one. That's good.
Title: Re: Landfills

it really does make you feel safer, doesn't it.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Beth-la on August 29, 2010, 06:18:00 AM
Yeah, it really does. At least now I know that if the chemical plant explodes we have a chance of survival.
Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: tridecagirl on August 29, 2010, 06:21:58 AM
Of course having inspectors so the plant didn't blow up would be nice too...
Or not having nasty chemical plants, which won't be an option for another century at least...

Oh, we'll have chemicals much longer than that. Humanity doesn't get the point. We're stupid.
Inspectors? Bwah! They don't even exist here.

Title: Re: Landfills
Post by: Beth-la on August 29, 2010, 06:37:02 AM
It does!!!! But, money is all that matters!!!! Why do you think the oil spill happened? Because the inspectors didn't bother to visit the rig. They we're supposed to, but they didn't! I bet you anything BP payed them off.

Arg, I'm as south as it gets. I'm a Florida girl. My friends tell me I really don't belong in the South though. I don't say ain't, but I do say yall and yer, against my better nature. I've been trying to break the habit lately. But yeah, I don't look like the stereotypical. Florida girl. I'm not blonde, I'm not tan (well I'm tan but not Mexican tan). I am good at running  and have long legs and stuff though, as most Floridians are perceived. But see, I can't wait to get out of Florida because I hate heat. I love it when it gets cold here (even though the coldest it gets is like 50 degrees, which  is frickin' freezing to us Floridians.)

HART? What's that?

No matter what era you're in, there will always be hazardous materials, and HazMat teams to deal with it. Plus, HazMat teams respond to all types of calls, not just spills. Strange odors, air testing, unidentified liquids, airports for unattended luggage calls, also along with the bomb squad, and a bunch of other calls too.

Jut give it a few years until we get nuclear fusion generators out of the testing stage and set up for commercial use... more power than nuclear fission but with none of the waste materials :) unless the oil reserves run out first... then it's permaculture lessons and a vegan diet for us all =/
