Now I am curious.  Why is it that each of you seems to assume that when I make a sweeping statement applied to an entire group, you immediately I assume I think that it must apply to you, personally?
Title: Re: Irony
Post by: Jess-la(: on October 31, 2010, 01:44:08 PM
because we are all part of the group
Title: Re: Irony
Post by: KingOfSpades on October 31, 2010, 01:47:12 PM
The group of "people on these forums?"  But that's clearly not what I meant and certainly not what I said: I'm part of that group.  I said the forums were filled with bubbleheads, and you assume this must mean that I think you, the reader, are a bubblehead.  Why?
Title: Re: Irony

who are you calling bubbleheads?
Title: Re: Irony

KingOfSpades:  Be specific when you make statements like that, please. Otherwise all Hell could break loose. Honestly, I didn't take it personally, and I don't think anybody else did either. We one big dis-functional family here, so if you say something to one of us, it applies to all of us in some ways. Besides, answer the bloody question if your going to make a statement like that. Why do you think we're bubbleheads? Your a newbie after all, so your probably just getting used to our strange ways on here. Yeah, we're random, but don't judge us! LOL

I never said the entire forums population was bubbleheaded.  Just some.  I never even articulated who it was.

As for those who thought I'd been "scared off," what, are you joking?  Your schoolyard taunts could only scare off an insecure middle school bully.  I got a bit overwhelmed with NaNoWriMo.

After 9/11 he made Homeland Security which prevented further terrorist attacks.

There is a phrase for what Homeland Security does.  It's called "security theater."  Things which give the illusion of safety but cannot stop a competent opponent.  Real security experts regularly break straight through the laughably incompetent defenses of the government, just to prove a point.  The only reason America is more secure now than before is because people now know to resist terrorists and instead of quietly complying with them and waiting for the superheroes with badges to save the day for them.

Then why has al-Qaeda not been able to do anything else in the past 7 years?  A lot of their attempts have been foiled.

Al-Qaeda attempted terrorist plots against America all through the 90s.  In fact, the 9/11 attacks were actually the second time the World Trade Center was bombed.  Why do most terrorist attacks get "foiled?"  Simple.  Terrorists aren't Doctor Doom.  They're angry people with guns.  They are literally no more threatening than you are.  Do you really think you could pull off a successful terrorist plot with nothing but what bombs you can make yourself and the guns in your local shop?
Title: Re: Irony
Post by: Hannah Burger on November 25, 2010, 07:08:41 AM
the one the BRITISH people found was made out of everyday stuff; a phone sim card amongst it :-\   these attacks do fail frequently- it's not the doings of officials that causes this, but the (some) terrorists are EPIC FAILS. Remember the guy who set fire to his butt?
Title: Re: Irony
Post by: KingOfSpades on November 25, 2010, 10:02:25 AM
I'm not really sure what your point is... At first I was like, okay, I knew that....but if all that stuff you said is true than why do the attacks happen?  And I'd watch what you say about me not being threatening.  Have you seen me in real life?  I could probably kick your ass.   :D

Because you think you can, you cannot.  Regardless, you're no threat to any halfway competent security force.

Note: Yes, this is a long post.  No one's putting a gun to your head and forcing you to read it.  Get over it.

You have absolutely no rules about keeping threads on topic or the like.  I've little doubt that everyone but me is going to be perfectly willing to drop the subject because you're all terrified of rocking the boat, but that's not really the underlying problem here.  The problem is that you're all relying on sheer force of peer pressure to maintain a huge host of unwritten rules.  Not only does this have absolutely no effect on anyone with a sense of self-confidence, it also means that the rules change depending on how the forums in general feel at the moment.  It's unstable and uncomfortable.  Worse, no one can ever show a shred of honesty, because if you do and the group doesn't like what you have to say, one of the unwritten rules becomes "you suck."  So everyone tip-toes around and pretends to love anyone else and there's no way to know whether or not they really mean it.  As proof of that concept: I like and respect Seth-la, and you know I'm telling the truth because I haven't been shy about saying when I don't like someone.  But if just about anyone else on this board said the same thing, there'd be no way to tell whether they were telling the truth.  Honestly, would any of you ever say that you don't like someone, even if you really didn't?  Even if you don't like them, you don't want to say as much for fear that everyone else will think you're a jerk.  So when someone else says they like you, how do you know they aren't lying for the exact same reasons?

What I'm getting at here: If there's a problem, don't just try and pressure other people into doing something else.  Talk about it, and agree on a rule that'll stop it from ever happening again.  Or you could sweep this all under the rug and pretend that everything is sunshine and rainbows while throwing terrified glances at everyone around you to make sure you aren't breaking the mold.  That would certainly be more in character.

I'm not saying anymore then this:

Be courteous and respectful to your fellow members at all times. Use your best judgment as to what being courteous and respectful means in a given situation.

Rule one of the forum.

If you do have a disagreement or problem with another member, you can either discuss it with that member or you can PM a moderator for ideas on how to handle it. If you opt to discuss your problem with that member first, do it in a respectful manner. "In a respectful manner" always means via Private Message. Don't gang up on people or bully someone or publicly humiliate anyone (i.e. by starting an argument in a thread that everyone can see), etc. Just use your common sense--we all have a good idea of what's polite and what isn't. There is no need for public arguments.

Alternatively, you can PM the moderator first if you're having a problem with another member and need some help dealing with it. If it becomes necessary to involve a moderator in a disagreement in any way, do so via Private Message. The moderator will then decide how to handle the situation and may or may not involve the administrator.

Once you have worked with a moderator to resolve the problem, you can send a private message to the administrator if you still feel that your disagreement is unresolved. The administrator may ask to see the previous correspondence between you and the other member, and between you and the moderator.

Conflict Resolution part of the forum rules.

Be courteous and respectful to your fellow members at all times. Use your best judgment as to what being courteous and respectful means in a given situation.

Courteous and respectful have no solid definitions.  They're vague terms, and therefore useless.

Quote
If you do have a disagreement or problem with another member, you can either discuss it with that member or you can PM a moderator for ideas on how to handle it. If you opt to discuss your problem with that member first, do it in a respectful manner. "In a respectful manner" always means via Private Message. Don't gang up on people or bully someone or publicly humiliate anyone (i.e. by starting an argument in a thread that everyone can see), etc. Just use your common sense--we all have a good idea of what's polite and what isn't. There is no need for public arguments.

But here there's the incredibly fuzzy line between what does and does not constitute an "argument."  Half the threads in this forum deal with whether or not character X was a good person/character, and the forums would be very close to completely dead if we banned these...But are those not arguments?  Why not?  What's the difference between those and a bit of back and forth about politics?  When exactly does the line get crossed from "discussion" to "argument?"

I do see your point. and I completely agree.
We're all about being off-topic on this forum. We really don't care. But when it comes to stuff like politics, we like to leave that to certain threads and PM, you know? And I know I keep going back to this, but one of the main reasons a lot of people left a while ago was because of controversy and arguments about politics. It got really nasty, believe me, and the whole forum was just depressed. A lot of people get on this forum to escape real life, and to go to someplace where they feel they belong and are accepted and can talk about some freaking awesome books! Haha. But anyway, we just like to keep general peace. Of course, a good debate is always fun and welcomed, though.

Oh, one more thing, just to put it out there. If I didn't like anybody on this forum, I wouldn't be here. I don't take well to irritating people, and if I'm around them, of course I won't stick around, because why put yourself through discomfort and misery? I like all of you guys, and no, I'm not lying. I don't bullshit people just to make them think better of me. Sure, some of you guys irritate the death out of me sometimes with our differing opinions, but that's just life, and I get over it.

Exactly Beth-la.
Oh and KingOfSpades, there is a very distinct line between an argument and a discussion.
Here's the exact definition of an arguement:
A contentious speech act; a dispute where there is strong disagreement
And here's an exact definition of a discussion
An extended communication (often interactive) dealing with some particular topic

See the difference?
Title: Re: Irony
Post by: KingOfSpades on November 26, 2010, 08:42:29 AM
Yes.  The difference is you used different words to describe the same thing.  There is no solid definition of what is or isn't "strong disagreement" or "contentious speech."  You could say that this post or that is contentious, I could say it's not, and neither of us could prove it either way because there are absolutely no criterion for judging these things.

Yes.  But you don't seem to see where I'm coming from.  Your rules are written so vaguely that they really aren't rules at all.  In the absence of real rules, the only way to get anyone to do anything is to use peer pressure, the ultimate form of which is public humiliation (or attempts at it, at least).  Your system is self-defeating as is.
Title: Re: Irony

And I agree with that as well, are rules aren't specific. That's the moderators faults though, we have nothing to do with that.
Title: Re: Irony
Post by: mollygator24 on November 26, 2010, 01:37:14 PM
I see where you are coming from, but there is a difference, just like I said in my former post. I hate either, for they both lead to fighting. I like disregarding any discussion/argument unless its about a book or characters.  But stuff like politics, rules, etc. I hate. It leads to fighting, screaming, and our favorite people leaving.

This happened with my mom and dad, thats why Im so touchy about it. They kept discussing rhings such as that ^^, and it left to my mom leaving my dad. Stuff like these "discussions" remind me of what my mom and dad said to each other. They didnt stop, nor will they ever.

Do you want everyone on here to be like that?

I sure dont. It makes me cry thinking about these type discussions as you so call them.

So please, stop?

Regardless of who's fault it is, it's still our problem.  So we should at least try to fix it.  We might not be able to enforce them, but we could still make a few more clearly worded rules.  When people break them, we can show them exactly which rule they're breaking and how, and conveniently leave out the part where we can't actually do anything about it.  This wouldn't stop people like Darling-Wa, from what I've gathered about him (her?), but it might slow them down at least.  If we made some kind of system for making/changing rules, we could resolve differences with a vote or mediation of some kind, instead of just verbally slugging it out in public until everyone gets upset and we sweep everything under the rug like nothing ever happened...Except, of course, something did happen, and will probably happen again, with that much more animosity for having been abandoned the first time.
Title: Re: Irony
Post by: Beth-la on November 27, 2010, 06:32:01 AM
True. We've made a forum recovery council (it was Seth's idea) and a lot of people joined, we just haven't thought to work out any problems. Ever since DW (he was a guy) got banned, things pretty much settled down, so we haven't really felt the need to do anything. We do still have some heated arguments though sometimes on here that get pretty nasty...which is definitely an issue.
Title: Re: Irony
Post by: KingOfSpades on November 27, 2010, 10:52:02 AM
Not to mention it's probably a good idea to know how to handle a crisis like DW before it happens, instead of figuring it out halfway through.

Wow this is ugly....

As for my part in it, I am very ashamed.  :-[  Like I said, sometimes (but rarely, actually) my hotheadedness comes out.  I seriously wish we had some moderators though.....

Two final words:  Like Aya thinks in Extras, the only way to really hurt someone is to ignore them.  So listen up, Hero Members!  Since we don't have moderators, we need to act like them.  Please take the idea I just mentioned into consideration.  I thought it was genius!  :D

As for kicking asses, I feel the need to say this:  I'm 5'10'', 168 pounds, and athletic.  So WATCH OUT!!!!!  :D :D :D :D
okay, can we still eat random stuff?
