Title: Your fave UGLIES book?
Post by: Emily_wa on January 10, 2010, 05:48:47 AM
Hey yall! Alrighty, here's the question on my mind, out of all the Uglies books, which one is your favorite? Uglies? Pretties? Specials? Or Extras? And why is it your favorite? Just a random question. (:

Also, are you guys excited for the meet-up? 5 hours and 12 minutes till we all meet up! You ready?

ya i know what u mean, Chloe-Wa! i love them all,  but my fave is probably uglies. because in pretties, tally is really shallow, and in specials and extras, she's kind of a jerk. lol but either way, i love them all! :)

I found specials really sad in parts, like when zane died i was crying  :'(  but i know what you mean, tally goes through so many changes in the books. Extras was great because of all the technology in it and because it showed how different things were because of the mind rain

OH I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i LOVED Zane-la! :'( and ya, that makes sense about Extras! the technology was really cool, but i didnt like that it was about Aya and not Tally, but thats just my opinion.

I actually liked Extras the most. I loved the others, but I've studied and traveled to Japan, so I liked that there was a Japanese heroine. Plus, the idea of the popularity based economy seemed very possible to me since I've spent a lot of time on the Internet and seen so many people get 'internet famous' so fast over seemingly random things.

wow i would love to visit japan i thought extras was cool because of the technology introduced in it. Perez Hilton is the first person i think of when i think of internet fame- he started as really just a blogger and now everyone knows who he is

My favorite UGLIES series book was Uglies. I loved Tally's time in the wild. It was really funny when she got really tired of the Spagbol just like I got tired of Maruchan soups. The rest of the books were good but Uglies was the most memorable for me.

hmmm I don't know.   I loved them all for my own reasons.
Uglies: It was the first book, and I've noticed the first one is usually really good.  I liked how that was when she really made the desision to be with the Smoke-and her and David started being "together" so to speak.
Pretties-She had to fight away the bubble headed ness, and she was strong enough to cure herself.  BUT she called David Ugly in the end, and although I loved Zane and almost cried when (SPOILER) he died, I always liked David better.
Specials-great book but Tally was a real jerk, and Zane died in that one...but she also make mends with David.
Extras- really liked Aya, she was almost like tally, a kicker by victim of circumstance, like hoe Tally wanted to be a pretty.
But I think all in all I liked Uglies best.

Charu of Midnight13- OMG i SO agree! Uglies was def my fave becuz of the same reason! i also loved the fact that once Tally got to the Smoke, she WANTED to be there and it wasnt just about getting Shay back anymore.

And I cried when she cured Dr. Cable.

Uglies, but also Specials. I love how, after she changes-ish, her special mind still holds her back (from crying, from expressing emotion, etc.). I also love her connection with David then- it changed, was harder, they'd been through more and I think it was much deeper than it was just after Uglies. And David still wants her, even after all that.

So, I have a question- I'm not sure if I should post it here, but I'm already typing so to hell with it. How much taller is the Special Tally than David? And does she really have pointy- like, triangle- teeth? :o. It just aggravates me most if she's taller than him. I know I'm being anti-feminist or whatnot here, but it seems weird if she's like a foot taller than the guy. (But it's that, plus her muscles and stuff that'd just make her seem like a giant compared to him.) AH! Oh my God I need to shut up. I talk way to much. I'm sorry you had to read my rant.

Extras because I didn't want to cry or scream at any of the characters. Well, maybe a little bit. I like looking at Tally and seeing what she's become after all the painful things she went through. I'm proud of what she is in Extras.

I'd have to say Uglies, though all books are awesome.  Uglies isn't as action-packed as the others, but I think it's a good starter for the series.

Though I'd have to say Specials is my second favorite because of the action.

Aw. Whatever, my mind is my own. I can imagine whatever.

But in some of my many MANY fanfic daydreams, Tally did something along the lines of have a breakdown and get changed back into an ugly. Whether that's right or what she would do or not, I have no idea. But whatever.

Yeah, you've got a point... but Dr. Cable is SO icy. I mean, she's evil and whatever, but she knows how to get what she wants. And she's really quite smart. (I can picture her as a Shay-like ugly who met up with Special Circumstances and got brainwashed into thinking that S.C. was saving the world. She's probably got quite an interesting story. I'm sure it wasn't her fault she turned out so evil.) ;D

i did want tally in there more, but there is an uglies trilogy, which follows the adventures of tally, and extras, which is a book on the outside...u can tell because u don't have to read the other books to understand it

I loved all of them, but if I had to choose, I think it would be Uglies. Everyone is normal (or "ugly), and I hate to hear Shay talk all pretty. I really thought that Extras was just not right. The way Tally was so mean, it just wasnt her. I wish she had been cured and made ugly again.

I liked them all, but I think Specials was my favorite, because that's when Tally really made her own decision about who she wanted to be, without any boyfriends interfering.
Title: Re: Your fave UGLIES book?
Post by: Emma-la on January 31, 2010, 10:44:47 AM
Ya, but I liked the parts with the interfering boyfriends. It ads a little romance to the books, and I know I am a good sucker for a bit of romance in a good action or fantasy. Sometimes, the romantic parts are my fave parts.

That's cool... I just got a little impatient with Tally and Zane or Tally and David sometimes. I was reading it, and I was like, "Come on, guys! There are pretties to cure and specials to fight, and you want to just say how much you love eachother? Isn't there anything better to do?" But you know what, I liked the romance a bit too.

OMG, I've wanted to talk about this for soooo long. Basically, I agree with Emily_wa and I think the best uglies book would have to be 'Uglies'. The details in this book are wonderful. It's about friendship, love, hope, and making the discussion between right and wrong (and figuring out what is right vs. wrong), but it's the depth the book brings that truly class it above the sequels. Furthermore, Emily_wa also says that in "Pretties", Tally is so shallow and I also 100% approve this statement as Tally is extremely oblivious to her surroundings and finds making the right decisions a mental challenge (considering the fact that she had to have so much emotional support). Continuing, Tally in the first book is relatable, "There was a certain kind of beauty, a prettiness that everyone could see. Big eyes and full lips like a kid's; smooth, clear skin; symmetrical features; and a thousand other little clues. Somewhere in the backs of their minds, people were always looking for these markers. No one could help seeing them, no matter how they were brought up. A million years of evolution had made it part of the human brain. (47)" This shows how strongly Tally feels towards their current society where after decades of evolution, you must be ideal in order to live ideally. So yeah... this basically sums up why I agree with Emily_wa. (disregard the fact that this was a long post and plz read it :P)

Firstly, welcome to the forum! :)
Secondly: I agree that Tally was shallow in Pretties, but wasn't that part of the point? She'd had her brain messed with to make her shallow. Because that's what the pretty operation did and Pretties was supposed to show us that.

Welcome to the forum, new friendo!

I think that my favorite Uglies book is Specials, because it sort of showed me how Specials see things, what they think, how they really are, which is something I had wanted to know since they were first introduced. Besides, it's a nice ending to an interesting saga (I count Extras as an Extra book, it's not as much part of the Uglies trilogy as it is an independent story of it's own that just takes place in the same universe and includes some characters)

I think Specials is my favorite too. I agree with Kaiju's reasons, and I also liked seeing how everything was affecting Zane and Tally's relationship with him. Specials also contained my single favorite quote from the series. And Diego was cool.
