Title: Hoverboards...
Post by: Kay-la on January 10, 2010, 10:17:43 AM
Do you think that with the present-day technology, there might be some way we can get hoverboards to work? Honestly, I don't think it'd be too hard. If you were able to get two strongly opposite magnetic structures--One in the board and the other underground, wouldn't this work?

The magnets would have to be UBER strong. We kind of have a different kind of hover board though, like the air powered ones. Someone brought one to my school once when i was in Jr. high and I got to ride it, lol.

i want a hoverboard i would probably end up breaking a few bones or something lol but it would be fun if we had hoverboards

I asked my science teacher about this once and he said it might be possible if we could cover the ground with magnets like the grid in the book. (Yeah, my science teacher thought I was really weird)

Bet we could have hover boards they're just too expensive or impractical for commercial use. We've had hover trains for years now so the technologies there.

Hoverboards are probably possible but right now really impractical. I did an essay on the concept of cars running like the hoverboards in the Uglies series. It was a really cool idea but would be completely impracticable at this point in time. Maybe in the future, I would be a willing test subject to try one out!!!

Plus where would everyone go whilst they replaced the ground with an iron grid?

we could set it up in the destert (any destert) and just move the citys on top
it would actualy be a pretty good idea because where most magor citys in north america are now is on top of some of the best farmland cuz that's how alot of citys started off
so we could switch it back you know
of course it would take a hellofalot of effort that I don't forsee any govornment attempting

What's wrong with hoverpaths? We don't have to uproot cities. Just go smoky and make lil' paths :)

Someone mentioned something before about mag-lev trains.  Bear in mind that, though they exist, they are not very far off the track, and it takes a heck of a lot of power to do just that.  There is something hoverboard-like that currently exists, but, if I recall correctly, it can't go very high off the ground, and the creators decided not to sell it due to safety concerns.  However, I think that they were used in the making of some movie, in the place of special effects.

There were hoverboards in some back to the future movie, but I think they just did it with special effects.

i once went on a field trip to an engineering place...and i asked an engineer about it. and he said it would be crazy expensive, and theyd have to make different ones for people of different weights (but maybe if you enter your weight it could adjust the power of the magnet??), and thered be like "air pockets" where the board would like dip down? but then he got kind of obsessed and began to frantically design it on a 3D program XD. hahah. anyway, it seems kinda impossible--for now. i do think it would work in the future, once more magnet stuff is figured out.
i love magnets. theyre so cool >_>.

I think bungee jackets are safer than crash bracelets. I mean, the bungee jackets make you bounce, but the crash bracelets swing you by your arms and possibly yank them out of their sockets! Which is safer?

Wow I can feel the geek coming out of me...

You can 'float' a circular piece of metal over 2 circular electromagnets (both hollow, one inside each other)... though i can't remember if the magnets have to be alternating or not.

Unfortunately with only having the magnetic field emitting from one source (i.e. the ground) any slight fluctuations cause the piece of metal (hoverboard) to fly off in a random direction

Technically speaking if you could control these slight fluctuations (or reproduce an 'oposite' of the fluctuation in the board) you could control the movement... but even in lab conditions there were too many variations... at "The Magnet Centre" where i did some work the lab Tech's only managed to get the plate to float for 5 minutes at a time... and that was after an entire month's worth of work.

Oh, and not to mention that if it was to move it would have to stay perfectly level as it did... meaning you couldn't bank into a corner, when your board changes direction, you would just keep going =P

I feel like i've just done a terrible thing putting that into words, now all my dreams of flying around Tally's city have been squashed forever :(

But hell, all we need are for them to put fans in the bottom... then we're SORTED ;)

what if you had a center that stayed level to the ground, with an outer shell, then you could bank into a corner.

Actually that's not a bad idea!! =D =D =D You could use a slow spinning gyroscope to allow you to gain the centre of ballance after a bank as well :) Only other thing you'd have to think about would be to use non magnetic materials for everything other than the static base :)

Anyone know a way to finance this crazyness?? I think we can make this work  ;D

we used to have grade 13 a long time ago that was more like University/Colege prep but they got rid of it. Ya the only difference between the two systems (from what I know which may be wrong) is the way you count the grades like you guys bese it on were you're going and we base it one were we got to. Hoverboards would be really, really fun! And easy, if we covered the ground with the metal grids (as stated before), they would just both have to be the same pole in the ground and the bottom of the hoverboard, so they would push away instead of pull together. But, no, thinking about it, because I mean, what if the pull/push was too strong the the board literally FLIPPED over to the opposite side? This would send the rider either flying off the board, or they could be (again, literally) squashed between the force when the north and south poles pull together! This could really happen if the magnets are strong enough. I don't know if this makes any sense because I am extremely tired, but thinking about this, you have to consider some of the bad things that could happen, too. Like they say, "The optimist invents the airplane, the pessimist invents the parachute."
Title: Re: Hoverboards...
Post by: Mara-la on May 01, 2010, 11:23:59 PM
And we should be able to switch the poles with the flip of a switch. That way, if there is an invading army, we could pin them down to the ground.

I beleve the hovarbord alredy exsist... but be prepaired to pay a hefty price... i think they are moor like the Spechal's hoverbords (air lifters) I dont think the magnit idia worked... but it would be AWSOM if it did....

i dunno if this has already been said, but to lift something as small as a frog, it takes a massive generator pumping out HUGE things of power.
therefore if we say the frog weighed 1 kg (hypothetically) we would need 50 times the amount of power to carry a small person (probs a teenager) then think about if we wanted to carry adults and really tall (therefore heavier) people, that would be like 90 times the amount of power.
i cant remember where i heard/read that. i think it was either in BtB or from my science teacher.
and i just crushed my own dream >:(
science is annoying.

From a 420v mains socket you can levitate a 1 kg iron plate... so all we need is a variable transformer so we can adjust the voltage/ampage to create the strength needed... and a program to change it under different circumatnces :) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I think I might hit up a few physics forums... see if anyone has actually atempted this before :) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Ok so by the looks of it this isn't going to be possible until we have a room temperature superconductor... but once that happens it should be a piece of cake :)

Anyone fancy a crack at the room temperature superconductor?? =P
