Title: Oooh, a walker!
Post by: zyanas on January 31, 2010, 01:32:31 PM
So, I just found this video:
http://www.ted.com/talks/theo_jansen_creates_new_creatures.html

And I thought it was rather fascinating. I rather like the way the walkers move, and the way he refers to them as being alive. With it being presented as a combination of building walkers and engineering beasts, it reminded me of Leviathan. I like how he considers the "walking" movement as sort of a re-invention of the wheel.

I do sort of wonder what the plans are for this, though. Certainly they are learning things from this that can be applied to more than just decorating the beaches?

Those are so cool, the one with the wave fans reminds me of a plane from a studio ghibli film

Here are some current pseudo-walkers,

(I'm pretty sure it's real, but it just slides it's feet (wheels underneath) and its ammunition is just rubber

and

I don't think it can walk though.

They aren't as far away in the future as you might think.
On a separate note, the "clankers" have more of a steam-punk feel, though they are actually diesel powered.
Powered exoskeletons would be cool too, but that would turn the trilogy into more of a Specials / Rix  kind of story.

(sorry for reviving a dead thread)

It reminds me of the old Sodaplay.com machines. It's changed now... It used to be mainly used by engineers and enthusiasts... *sigh*

Still kinda fun though. http://sodaplay.com/
