Title: What WAS your favourite book until Leviathan came along?
Post by: Aerodynamics on June 09, 2011, 08:38:23 AM
Alright guys, I have a question for you. What was your favourite book until Leviathan came along? I'm sure all of you HAD a favourite book until you picked up Leviathan,  ;D. Or is Leviathan NOT your favourite book? ~I sure hope it IS your favourite book!~ I can tell you my favourite books were by Rick Riordan. I also liked the book Sundancer. NOW, HOW ABOUT YOU GUYS?!

Haha! Awesome. Unfortunately I don't have enough money to buy all the books I want (Books are so freaking expensive these days), so I spend my days at the library.

My relatives learned. Pretty much all I get for the holidays is books or Barnes and NOble gift cards.

Luckyy! I'm going to tell everyone for my next b-day to do that. Oh, and I think my b-day theme is going to be Leviathan related. Like, dress up in Victorian style, or something like that. Or was it Edwardian style? I forget.

It's Victorian.
I don't have favorites, but I have dreams about what I will put on my bookshelf when I grow up and FINALLY gain independence.
These are:
Harry Potter (my absolute favorite of all time), The Bartimaues Trilogy (comes close), Inkheart Trilogy (Seriously good fantasy), The Warrior Heir Trilogy (Still continuing, though), Leviathan (DUH!!!), Midnighters (DUH!!!), The Book Thief (Beautiful beyond almost everything I have ever read. It will rock your world.) The Mortal Instruments (not AMAZING but certianly entertaining)...

1914 is Edwardian. Well - just after Edwardian.  ;D

I love reading, and some of my favourite books are: Secrets of the Fearless, Pagan's Crusade, Highwayman's Footsteps and The Adventures of Sam Witchall. Secrets of the Fearless is a lot like Leviathan - but historically accurate rather than steampunk and set in 1807-1809

Seven Realms is amazing, I loved Unwind so much it's insane, Hunger Games was my obsession for weeks, the Maze Runner is up there with the best, but my new craze is Artemis Fowl. I just discovered it this year, and fell in love with it. I also love Percy Jackson, Peter and the Starcatchers, Harry Potter (duh!), Airman (so AWESOME!), and a new one, the Kane Chronicles.

Leviathan has swiftly and harshly shoved it's way to the top of my favourite book list. I'm not exactly sure what was there before: Harry Potter? The Invention of Hugo Cabret? The Janna Mysteries? Hmmm...

I'm enjoying reading lots of new book suggestions from ya'll!!!  ;D Thanks!!
I really didn't like the Mortal Instruments series though - I hated Jace, was annoyed by Clary, and my favourite character, HUMAN Simon, didn't exist for long anyway  :-\
But I'm looking forward to reading the others listed here  :D

The MI is okay. :P I agree with you on Jace, and Clary had NO personality. But I LOVE Simon. Us Jews are sadly misrepresented in literature. Pluse he's just awesome. And it gets better as you go along...
It makes for an entertaining, if shallow read.

I'm sure that a lot of people think it's a brilliant book series! I can see why some would love it so much.
I tried reading them once, but I couldn't get through the first novel XD. My sister loved them though; each to their own, I guess.

Ah. I love Jace. I WANTED TO PUNCH CLARY AND DUMP HER INTO THE RIVER. Simon was awesome. I hated how he got turned into a vamp. I liked it, but didn't love it. What bothered me was half the characters. And I'm one of the few people that hate Harry Potter.

I've had many favorite books over time, including Leviathan and Twilight (I was young, don't ask) and other things, but The Hobbit will always and forever be the best book I've ever read, therefore it is my true favorite.

Really? I adored reading and everything about it. My favourites switched a lot. First it was Harry Potter, then I discovered Percy Jackson and the olympians, then came the Red pyramid, and now Heroes of Olympus. One of my previous favourites was the Dragon in the Sock drawer, when I was in grade three. A long, long, time ago. Now, Leviathan has shoved it's way to the top. I plan on reading the rest of Scott Westerfeld's books when I turn a bit older.

Harry Potter and Artemis Fowl are great books too!
Oh, I forget to mention, Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix. It's so tragic, but I love it. It's really well-researched...

My favorite book is still (and may always be) The Crown of Dalemark by Diana Wynne Jones which no one has ever heard of (perhaps that's why I like it XD). But Leviathan is number two, shoving off several contenders vying for being for my second favorite book.

YES
After like all of her good characters were dead within 10 chapters, I realized that she was trying to make the ending all soap opera-y. It was so dramatic and honestly made me a smidge depressed with her creepy idea of having katniss' kids play on a grave yard  :-\

Ain't that the truth. They get soap opera-y. Not good. I think James Patterson writes with no basic plot in mind. Sometimes it works for him, but not now.

I liked Maximum Ride. The fourth and fifth book kind of annoyed me, but other than that I think it's a series worth looking into. The last book comes out next year, I think.

I didn't cry during Mockingjay, either. Prim being killed was the closest I got. Most of it I was just like "WHOAAA!!!"

What's it about?
A young girl in the 1800's who dresses as a boy to get on a ship. She then manages to travel around the world, thwart various people with evil intentions, play a lot of folk music, make surprising amounts of money and get off with practically every male she sees in later books.

Would other people say that's fair?  ;)

I only ever read the first series. My little sister has every single book though. I like the books mostly because before Warriors my little sister never read anything, (seriously, I even had to read Harry Potter to her) but now she's tearing through books almost as fast as I do. So for that I have to give the Erin's a grudging respect, even if I do think the amount of Warriors books there are is getting really out of hand.

This is how big a reader I am...

I don't have a favorite book.

...

I have a favorite bookshelf.Where I put ALL my favorite books.

Very much agree.
A good reader can expand his/her range of reading and appreciate all the themes and lessons written between each set of covers, whether leather, paperback, or hardcover. Each book I read has a different impact on my life and my view on life.
All my books are my favorites, so I basically don't have one.  ;D

The second arc was okay, but the third I did not like. Haven't even touched the forth... It would be nice to be a warrior, but medicine cats have their own apprentices until they die. I would love to order around the same cat for season after season.

And medicine cat-ness makes me feel special.  :D

That is very true. The reason Ender's Game is my favorite book is because of the impact it had on me and the insight i gained from reading it. It was my first real "adult book" and it left a large impact. Oddly enough, none of the other books that are high up on my list are even remotely similar to Ender's Game, whether in plot, setting, or characterizing, so that has to say something.

Thank you! I was determined that they were going to end up together, then Nathanial had to be the big hero and sacrifice himself.  Idiot.

But Bartimaues...he was awesome.  My favorite character by far

Actually, I was just talking to my aunt about the Hunger Games, and the reason she liked it is because it showed that war does have effects on people. Of course she put in in bigger and better words, but whatever.

And I love the Bartimaeus trilogy. Ptolemy's Gate was my favorite, and yes, I did start shipping Kitt/Nat. I had thought they might end up together from the second book cause there was some good interaction between them, but well... You know whayt happened at the end. Bartimaeus is still one of my favorite characters of all time. He's just so... Barty-ish. And awesome.

VM: No, never read Private Peaceful. What's it about?

I adore the Hunger Games, I started reading it and was like OHMYGOSH I love this, and I was reading it in class when I should have been learning things...Leviathan took me a little longer to love, but now both books are equal in my opinion.

And a few posts back people were discussing Peeta vs. Gale, I must say, how can anybody like Gale after he went all homicidal and blew up District 2? And especially when he abandoned Katniss when she needed him most, right after she (spoiler alert) killed Coin? Peeta was always there for her, and had loved her his whole life, even back when Gale was kissing girls right and left. Okay, I think I'm done with my ranting now...

Gale/Peeta argument. Those crazy fangirls and their love triangles :)

I didn't really enjoy that aspec of THG...love triangles are so overused these days.

It means go for the sweet guy, not the hot one. Sweet before heat. Guys, you can use that for girls.

And yeah, I've always hated love triangles. I've always been the romantic who believed there was only ever one person out there for a person.

Exactly. I love Peeta, even though SPOILER he still had mental problems. But Gale abandoned her! And killed Prim! And wouldn't apologize! SPOILER END.

Well..nobody's perfect. That's what THG teaches, actually. Everyone - no matter how nice they may seem - has their faults. Which is a nice change from all the cardboard characters currently in YA novels.

Yeah I know, some YA is getting way too cookie cutter if you know what I mean. That's why I love THG and Leviathan, they both take place in totally unique worlds.

Arty! YOU'RE BACK!!!!
Hiya! It's good to be back!

And yes, I agree. So many paranormal romance... There's like 5 shelves at B&N for 'em. Why can't we have that many for dystopia and action?
Title: Re: What WAS your favourite book until Leviathan came along?
Post by: By_the_Books on July 05, 2011, 01:49:25 PM
Good to see you again!  :D

And I loooooooooove dystopian/sci-fi/action. Thankfully, with books like the Hunger Games and Divergent out, post-apocalyptic novels are starting to get more popular. Thankj goodness! I mean, I'll read a little bit of romance here and there, but a majority of teen books out there are, yep, you got it. Paranormal romance or teen romance.

I know! I can't stand it, I've seen enough paranormal fantasy books out there to last a lifetime. I'm so glad dys lit is starting to takeover.

I liked the fourth, sixth and seventh. The fifth was good, but it was more of a transition book. A really loooong transition book. But the seventh was my favorite. It was kind of all over the place, but I loved it. Read it in less than a day.
Title: Re: What WAS your favourite book until Leviathan came along?
Post by: CrazedHungerGamesFangirl on July 12, 2011, 07:52:20 AM
The fifth, in my opinion, was the best. It was just...kind of a magical shift in the tone, where everything gets darker and more mysterious...plus, Umbridge pwns.
Title: Re: What WAS your favourite book until Leviathan came along?
Post by: ArtfullyInsane on July 12, 2011, 07:53:44 AM
I loved the 7th, and it made an epic movie. But the third one is amazing too.
Title: Re: What WAS your favourite book until Leviathan came along?
Post by: Pseudonym on July 12, 2011, 07:56:02 AM
I liked the beginning and the end of the 7th. I think the middle is kind of just Harry trying to be all macho and save the world and Ron acting like a jealous, hormonal teenager and Hermione making sure they don't die.
Title: Re: What WAS your favourite book until Leviathan came along?
Post by: ArtfullyInsane on July 12, 2011, 07:56:54 AM
I didn't like Harry in the middle. He just ticked me off. But I love the end!
Title: Re: What WAS your favourite book until Leviathan came along?
Post by: jessinator11 on July 17, 2011, 05:46:27 PM
I loved the seventh book, but I missed Hogwarts.  That was the only reason it wasn't my favorite.  Normally, the Ron and Hermione kiss would've been enough for me, but the camping part just seemed to last forever.  And then the creepy old lady and Ron leaving...it just didn't do it for me.  But the sixth book was my favorite by far.  Yes, it was simply a transition to the seventh book and didn't even feature the big baddie, but it really made the Harry, Ron, and Hermione seem like normal teenagers instead of the three who always had to save the wizarding world, and I really liked that about it.  Plus, it was the book that (for me) really tied everything together, and (in my opinion) had the best battle (the seventh book's battle was a tad...overdone.  The giant spiders coming to fight? Really?).  Don't get me wrong, though, i loved the whole series beginning to end (except book five, when Harry became the whiny, angst-ridden emo kid that haunts the rest of the series.  That book just would not end).

Plus Jo said part of the reason she wrote the epilogue was to show that Teddy had a good life and stuff. That made me happy, as Lupin and Tonks were two of my most favourite characters.

Me, my sister and a couple of our friends went the Friday after the midnight release, (they didn't do a midnight release at my theater, poo D:) we bought out tickets three weeks in advance, and we got there three hours early and there was already a huge line. The lady at the front had been there since eleven in the morning! (the showing was around seven) We also dressed up, my friend as Trixie, her sister as Ginny, and me and my sister just as Hogwarts students. I guess you could say we're a little obsessed.  :D

My old favorite? I really like The Hunger Games, so I have to say that, but also the Mortal Instruments... Clockwork Angel was amazing...
Well, my favorite is still Death Note, but...

Speaking of Harry Potter, I've still gotta see that... I'll call a friend and go, soon... not today though...

You can try interlibrary loan, if your library offers that service. If not, at least they'd know that you want it.

Yeah, but the library can only get books on inter-library that are a few years old... I just have to wait.

Go into Profile -> Look and Layout Preferences, and then set the time offset to about -2, or what ever number works. That should help :)

I have, but all the books like Hunger Games, Artemis Fowl, Eric Walters books, The Book Thief, Inkheart, Eragon, The Dragon Rider, and The Hobbit seemed to become meh after reading for a while. Eragon became the worst type of meh which failed to convince to read the sequels. I never read a book which is as exciting as Leviathan.

In elementary school I was obsessed with Redwall.  Like, entirely obsessed. Then I just lost interest around 7th grade. I still have them all, and I like them in bits and pieces, but I could never reread the series like I used to or get into a new release- I struggle to get through an entire book of Redwall now. I'm not sure what changed in my interests.

Also, Eragon. UGH. I loved those books too, UNTIL THE FRACKING END OF THE TRILOGY WAS ALL LIKE, OH HAI GAIZ, IMA BE A CYCLE NOW AND LEAVE YOU HANGING FOR YEARS SO YOU FORGET ALL THE DETAILS AND HAVE TO REREAD THESE REDICULOUSLY LONG BOOKS. ALSO, IMA F-UP THE MOVIE. KTHXBAI. And if Eragon ends up with Arya, I WILL kill somebody. Somebody by the name of Christopher Paolini.

ANYHOW.

My favorite bookshelf other than Leviathan includes Chalice, The Blue Sword, Outlaws of Sherwood, and Beauty (all by Robin McKinley), the Protector of the Small and Lioness Quartets by Tamora Pierce, The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia E. Wrede, Uglies by Westerfeld, pretty much anything by Diana Wynne Jones, and scatterings of other books by other authors, both those are my favorites.

Weird! We have a lot in common reading-wise.

Redwall was my ABSOLUTE favorite when I was in elementary school. I still pick them up now and again for sentimental reasons.

I am also a HUGE fan of Diana Wynne Jones. And I haven't read the Enchanted Forest Chronicles in ages but they were so cute. :) I read a lot of Robin McKinley too, but my sister is a bigger fan than me.

I was shipping Eragon/Nasuada (it makes so much sense) but I don't think that's gonna happen  :(

Okay I just read "How They Croaked : The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous" by Georgia Bragg.  It's a non-fiction book, but it's so awesome!  It has many famous historical figures, including Marie Antoinette (who was a Hapsburg) and Charles Darwin.  Dr. Barlow seems to be quite the opposite of her grandfather (he rarely left the house after his round the world expedition.  He also wrote down every illness he had, including how many times he threw up per day).  So I totally recommend this to everyone!

Really? I've never met many people with my tastes in reading! Happiness!
What other books do you like? I'm always hungry for more!

I also love Kristen Cashore, but she's only written Graceling and Fire so far. She needs to write more. Like, a lot more, because she's awesome.
I usually don't include her in my favorite authors because she's fairly new, but I suppose I've read her two books so much that I should include her.

Also, I learned tonight that Diana Wynne Jones died in March, which is very sad because I love everything she's ever written that I've read. ;-;

Yeah, it's awful about DWJ.  :'( But she still had a book ready that's coming out sometime soon, I believe. Haven't read Kristin Cashore yet but my sister keeps telling me too. XD

Anyway, my favorite book of Diana Wynne Jones's (and ever) is The Crown of Dalemark. Love that whole series. Other writers I like are Nancy Farmer, Shannon Hale, Juliet Marillier,  Garth Nix, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett. My sister likes Sharon Shinn and she says she is a bit similar to Robin McKinley/Diana Wynne Jones/Tamora Pierce type of books (she keeps telling me to read them). If you want more though, feel free to ask, I'm almost a professional.  ;)

Very commendable list of authors there, WN.

I'd recommend Cashore. I really liked Graceling. Fire was okay.

When I was younger I had a thing for the Charlie Bone/Children of the Red King series by Jenny Nimmo. It's a bit young for me now, but I still like the plot in itself.

I loved the Tortall Books by Tamora Pierce. I consider those books every girl should read sometime in their lifetime.

And as always. Ender's Game is my baby.

What's Gregor? -out of the loop-

Which is weird, because I'm never out of the loop on books...

I got in trouble in elementary school because I read too much.
AR is the Accelerated Reader program, where you take a test to determine your reading level, and then take comprehension tests on books. Overall a great way to make kids hate reading.
I tested at a fifth grade comprehension level in third grade, and had read every book on the list up to the eighth grade level by the end of fourth grade.  You're not allowed to reread or read below your comprehension level according to the program, and the program stops at the eighth grade level.
Because this program was required by the school district, I caused a ton of problems and almost failed English a few years because I was too good at it.  Luckily my parents don't take crap from anyone, and they got it straightened out... xD

Yes, I'm glad AR came along after me in school  :) Gregor the Overlander is a series by Susanna Clarke, who also wrote the Hunger Games. It's sort of an urban Alice-in-Wonderland. I recently listened to it on audiobooks and loved it quite a lot even though I am way over the recommended age for it. XD I think I liked it better than the Hunger Games, actually.

In first grade, I hated reading. I mean, I just didn't see the point of it. Then my teacher read The Magic Tree House in class, and after that, I skipped like seven reading levels so I could get a pass to read anything in the library. Then came The Fairy Realm, and then it was straight to Harry Potter. I missed a whole lot of reading levels skipping around like that, so I have weird vocab definitions, since I figured all of them out with the context. I've gotten really good at context.

LOTR is too long for me.
Even the movies.
I stayed awake in theaters, so I know the cinematic version of the story, but I can't stay awake during them since then.

I am too ADD for the books, too. I think I got three pages in before I went off to do something else?
I wish I found it more gripping, because the cinematic story is awesome and the book is always better...

I wish I found it more gripping, because the cinematic story is awesome and the book is always better...

I actually think that, in some ways, the movie of LOTR is better than the books. I love the books, but they do lack that certain... something. I never re-read them because I have the movies to watch instead.

My friend said she'd never read them and so I showed up the next day at school and while we stopped at her locker at the last minute I shoved them into her locker and made her read them. The next day she was on the second book. (she had read the hobbit and the first book in one night) they didn't last long.

I forgot what my favorite book was before Leviathan...probably something else of Scott Westerfeld's. Or a John Green novel, probably.

I've read Lord of the Rings. It was good, but the movies are more entertaining, I think.

For me, I liked the first book of THe Hunger Games. I felt that the series got progessively worse by each book. The last one was a pain to try to get through. (I dropped from reading that last book for about a month before finishing it.)

I meant that I was halfway done the last book. Got to the part where they try to attack the city. And the book blew up in my face for a month before I got the courage to read the most boring part of the series.  :-\

The book should have ended with a HUGE invasion force with all of their technology intact from Europe and Asia invading North America to make it epic.

 :o That's crazy.

I wish that Collins added more background of the great war that happened that formed Panem. I really wanted to know the cause, and what happened to all the other countries. :/

Agonquin Park is the largest park/woods in Canada. When you go there to go canooing/camping, all of my teechers say that there are stalkers who stalk you in the middle of the night when they took the midnight canoe lessons. Wish me luck when I go there for one week.  :)

The last book I read before Leviathan came along and supplanted it as my favorite was The Prophet's Camel Bell by Margaret Laurence. The book was Laurence's memoir about living in Somalia with her civil engineer husband in the 50's (before everything went to hell, as seen in Black Hawk Down). Current favorites while I wait for Leviathan are: Reading Lolita in Tehran, The Bloody White Baron and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind manga.
