Title: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: Rebecca on October 13, 2009, 06:24:27 PM
Is anyone reading it? I've just started. And I love it, not that I'm surprised at all. It is KILLING ME not to be reading it RIGHT NOW, but alas, there are these things called school and work and LIFE that keep taking away my time to READ. However, I will be spending a crapload of time on planes in the next week or so, so hopefully then....

ANYONE ELSE? (If you post spoilers, plz to put a big spoiler warning so that I won't accidentally see something, KTHXBAI!!!!)

wat exactly is this book about? it sounds kinda set really far back into history and im not big into that stuff....
Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: Tash-la on October 16, 2009, 01:07:04 PM
It's an alternate history based in 1914 at the start of the first world war. Except in this war, it is separated between the Darwinists and the Clankers. The Darwinists genetically engineer beasts and animals into vehicles and they basically take the place of weapons and machines. The Clankers build huge war machines that are (from what I understand) diesel powered. They are very much like tanks, except that the ones featured in the book walk on two to eight legs instead of roll on treads on the ground. This book is considered of the steampunk genre, but after reading it all the way through I didn't find any elements of steam =P Not that I was in any way disappointed with what I did read.
It is a wonderful book and it really captured me right into the story. And I absolutely loved the illustrations. I was really looking forward to them and it made me get through the book even faster to see the next featured illustration on the page coming up.

I highly suggest you read it if you haven't. Even if you don't like alternate history, it is a really good story and I assure you that you wont be disappointed.

so you don't have to really be an expert at history or understand history as much to enjoy the book? cuz I love Scott's writing I just don't want to be bored to death by history =D lol
Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: Tash-la on October 16, 2009, 01:21:17 PM
Believe me when I say it's not a history lesson =D (I fell asleep a few times in history class...) It's meant to be a story. And really, if you liked Uglies, then you will probably like the characters in Leviathan too.

OMG I fell asleep so so so many times during history last year (and I was in honors world history  :-[ ) i have no clue as to why I put myself in that hard of a class when honestly I just hate history! I think I will check out that book sometime though. Need to find a new book for a book report due in a month, why not get it done early eh? lol

Post by: G-la on November 10, 2009, 12:46:31 AM
thats cuz there  splenda in the cakes, no sugar, which makes it healthy, yuck, my school has vending machines full of swet that rot your teeth, but our lunches are nasty, i stick to the salads myself, or chicken sandwich, but you were lucky you had all those places, my sissy got papa johns when she was in high school, but sadly i get nothing at my current school, but at my last my yearbook and drama teachers would let you leave campus and buy lunch as long as you came back to eat it and were back before lunch was over lol taco bell and subway every other day baby
Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: Chloe-Wa on November 10, 2009, 03:11:21 AM
we aren't allowed to leave at lunch time unless we're in sixth form . i don't have school luches very often- i prefer to take my own at least i know what i'm eating and everything my school serves is soaked in oil

english people often use a lot of sarcasm
i like words like sweet and awesome but theyre really american- if english people say stuff like that they sound weird lol
we say retard too and we say stuff like "spaz" but no-one actually means anything offensive or actually realises that they mean anything

another one in my city although it isnt very common now is to call people "la" but not many people use it and if they do they usually have a really broad liverpool accent
i like to be sarcastic but im not very good at it lol
i use sweet to describe something that i think is cute like awww how sweet was that

/new fan enters room and pretends like he was here the whole time and that he knows everyone

So, I was in Barnes and Noble looking for an adequate manga fix and Craig Ferguson's book when the cover of Leviathan caught my eye. I read the synopsis and bought it. Two days later, after reading during classes and as soon as I got home, I finished it. Before then, I had never even heard of Steampunk, and since reading Leviathan, so many strange coincidences have come up. One day after reading Leviathan and learning about steampunk for the first time, I was asked to model by a photagrapher friend. What was the theme? Steampunk. In that same week, my studies shifted to the hapsburgs, and I was instructed to build a walking vehicle in tech.

Anyway, I seriously think Leviathan is movie material. I can just see the special effects! Casting would be easy and based on how you have more Twitter followers than even Megan Fox, it would definitely be a hit. As long as its not directed by the guy who directed Dragon Wars anyway...

*i hope i didnt double post...a bit laggy*
Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: xxsamaelxx on December 07, 2009, 12:52:33 PM
you didn't double post ;D but i know what you mean because after reading this and researching steampunk i was so interested and saw like the coolest almost steampunk type watch on this guy and was like man that watch is fawesome now I really want a steampunk watch if ya know what i mean. Plus this era in history is like my absolute favorite and think that yea it would make great movie material as would any of Scott's books ;D

lets play "Leviathan character casting"

i can see Spencer Locke as deryn, though she might be too pretty to be a boy. She was hot in RE: Exctinction as K-Mart tho.
I have no idea who would be alec...
Miss "Its called a Thylacine" could be Jessica Alba and Sean Connery could be the Captain
Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: xxsamaelxx on December 08, 2009, 07:26:56 AM
I kind of see Nicole Kidman as Dr. Barlow cause of the thinness and poise if you know what i mean probably because of The Golden Compass and Australia [the way she was in those would make a good Dr. Barlow]  :-\

it would fail. nicole kidman is too well known for that kind of role and it would be seen as a golden compass rip.
Lol, i thought about Anna Sophia Robb for Deryn cuz she could pass for a boy, but I decided Spencer Locke cuz Anna is too young and just recently did another action movie and Id rather see unkown actors such as Spencer Locke doing the leads anyway

Hi, I'm new here. I just joined the forum because I loved the Leviathan book very much. I don't read much (Not since Harry Potter), but when I came across this accidently I fell in love with it after reading it. It was a great book and I'm looking forward to reading the next one^^

The illustrations are what got me interested into buying it. Since its done by one of my favorite artists :)

well it's like the difference between a television clip and a trailer
trailers are allways going to get more epic points cuz that's there job, to be epic
I don't really prefer one to the other because they're seperat things
just wanted to point out the similaritys
also I would sugest bizenghast to anyone who likes creepy simi-anime ghost storys
it's very cool

Never read any of Scott's books except this one. Like I said, I don't read a lot.

The cover got my attention. Then I looked inside and saw the pictures and was like "This style looks familiar.... Oh! I machine with legs! *turns pages* "Oh! A flying whale!" *reads discription of plot* "Hmmmmm, I'm buying it." X3

Hmm, good point.
Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: CorpseVendor on December 15, 2009, 02:15:35 PM
I got a guess. Well, not really..

Obviously we might know the whole thing about the eggs, and maybe halfway through the book there will be a sudden change in events like an attack or Alek's identity is discovered and they have to flee.
Alek said they would part their ways when they land at the Ottoman Empire, but do you think that Deryn might go with Alek to keep him safe or they might have no choice but to make a sudden run for it? ...Nah, as I write that it seems less plausible. Deryn lives to fly.

*thinking* ...Maaaaybe the characters might....Buh! I dunno. Scott said in an interview that in the third book they go a lot farther than the Ottoman Empire. So obviously they're going to travel with each other.

This is tricky  lol  :-\
Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: Heliopteryx on December 16, 2009, 03:47:03 PM
In the end, most likely only one egg will survive.  Maybe the sick egg will even make a miraculous recovery and be the one that survives.

I suspect a very aukward Persona 4 type relationship coming up. I will be like Kanji crushing on Naoto and becoming all conflicted because he thinks Naoto is a boy.

I feel like Alek will start to "like" Deryn and feel kind of...confused for a while. Then later Deryn will reveal the truth in an unfortunately public manner and Alek will be like "Oooooh so thats why...ahahaha (e_e) eh...so, what now?"
Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: CorpseVendor on December 18, 2009, 08:08:21 AM
A dragon?! Where did you read that? Sweet!
Yeah, Deryn's probably going to get a new perspective on Clankers considering they are heading towards a clanker country. Haha! I liek to see her pilot something and crash it. Then pops her head out and say something like "See, that wasn't so hard."
I think a fun thing to happen in the 2nd book would be Deryn trying to teach Alek how to  "swagger" so he can blend in better with the crowd. Teach him to be more streetsmart than an aristocrat.

It was obvious Deryn wanted to tell him he was a girl but was interupted by Dr.Barlow. *Damn it, so close*

I think when Alek discovers Deryn's a girl will be by accident, and not by simply walking in on her while she's changing or something but in some other unexpected way. He'll probably be shocked as hell and won't be sure what to think at first cause, come on. Guys were different back then. But... maybe he won't know till like the 3rd book for all we know! I mean, its much more fun with him thinking Deryn's really Dylan, believing if he wasn't born royalty he'd like to be someone like Dylan.  ;D
Or if she does decide to tell him, she'd probably keep it just between him and her because it would jeopardize everything she worked for to get into the military.
Maybe even tease him by admitting she is a girl yes, but not reveal her real name in case he lets it slip. And Alek is unfortunatly good at letting things slip. He slipped all kinds of info to Dr.Barlow by accident in the first book. ;)

Leviathan rocks!!!!!
one of the coolest books EVER!!!
definetly in my top three Scott books (the other 2 are constantly switching around as i read each book for the 60th time ;D)
i got it for helping my parents out with this dinner thing, and i read it in an afternoon (+half an hour the next morning  :))
and im already reading it for the second time!
im actually going to die if i have to wait more than a few months for the next one.

so pretty much ill be dead before my birthday :(
oh well, ill reread every other one of scot-la's books!!!!!!!!!!

AAAARGH!!! I read the book in under 5 hours! DAMN YOU, SPEED READING! Now I have to spend the next 10 months looking at the pretty pictures while Scott writes another masterpiece ^_^

Oi vey, you can tell this books good, because this is the first time I've read a book (voluntarily, that is) in about 3 years. I hate reading, and I only got the book because I liked the gears on the cover, and I wanted it for a project at school. On the way home from the store, I flipped through the first pages, and saw the first picture of the Stormwalker, so I read the first few chapters to figure out what the picture meant. And well, one thing led to another and now i'm in love with the book. And now the book doesnt leave my side. I've had it with me everywhere i go for the past week almost ^_^

A Leviathan Wikia page is currently in the works. http://leviathanscottwesterfeld.wikia.com/wiki/Leviathan_Wiki

Anyone with any Wiki editing/page creating experience would be much appreciated. We'd be more than happy if you could help us build and create a wonderful page the awesome novel.

I've actually waited a whole month before I could get it (it's now in my hands!!) And I must say, it's so far SO GOOD!! I like Deryn more. She's angsty. And the idea of the technology actually advancing ahead of its time is pretty mindblowing. Bad news is I'd have to wait again for (gasp!) NINE months for the sequel. Oh well, that makes room for rereading the book!  :P

P.S. I go to sleep wih it  ;D
Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: JimmyLost on January 05, 2010, 05:32:06 AM
well I think Alek is a bit more angsty
with the recently dead parents and all
(that dosn't count as a spoiler because it's in like the first chapter as well as being part of history)
Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: Zombie on January 05, 2010, 05:40:21 AM
I think they're both pretty angsty, haha. For different reason, obviously, and maybe different amounts of angst. But they're both pretty big angstmonters xD

lol, about waiting so long for the next book..... I told my dad to read the book, and he loved it. Then he was like, "Why didn't you tell me there was gonna be a sequel?!" and complained a bit about having to wait so long because he thought it was only one book long xD Good fun...

...I didn't think Deryn was angsty. I found her sarcastic and a bit stuck-up, but not angsty.
I found Alek the one with the agnst, but I would have expected that. Afterall, his parents were murdered, the germans and his own country want him dead, he can't inheirt anything and (before meeting Deryn) didn't have a freind in the world. I'd be pretty bummed out myself.

Still love the both of them very much though^^ I can't wait to see what happens to them in Behemoth! Then we'll really get to see them develop considering we don't have to wait half a book for them to meet :)

I've just read somewhere, not sure if its true but at least it's something, that in the next book Behemoth Alek will be wounded and imprisoned by an as-of-now unknown enemy.

I think this will happen after the Clankers split once they land and Deryn will try to save him. If this information is true of course :) But its something we can all ponder about until October.

I've learned to be cautious in wishing for a book to be turned into a movie because I've been disappointed so many times.  But if done right, a movie version would be simply MIND-BLOWING AMAZINGNESS.  That would be something you'd just have to see on the big screen.   :o

It would be col as long as they didn't try to squash all three books into one movie.

But we'd still complain about it.

I'd highly doubt anyone could fit all three books into one movie. There's just too much going on. It would completley wreck the story line and confuse the audience

Does anyone think that it's sort of sad that Alek thinks Deryn is 'the boy he always wanted to be'. Ouch... The boy he admires for his boyishness is... a girl.

Awkward.
Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: Tabac vie on February 19, 2010, 12:36:29 PM
well I think he is more refering to the freedom and easy going life that Deryn has, the way that he spent his entire life as a prince, not getting th "commoner" freedoms, this so in a way he is more saying that Deryn lives the life he wish he had. But yeah when you put it in that context it's pretty funny.

Oh God I can't WAIT to see how Alek will react when he discovers Deryn's true identity! X3 Thats like having your favorite candy dangling above you, just out of your reach! You just can't wait to sink your teeth into it.

Will he be shocked? Surprised? or suddenly ignore her all together out of embarrassment, because she plays a boy so well (Possibly better than Alek himself  ;) ) ...or see Deryn as the unique individual she is. Who could be the ideal girl for him and also take into account what his father did in marrying a commoner.

I'm just curious to see if she'll either tell him or he'll find out on his own. Hoepfully in the 2nd book! XDXDXD

Title: Re: LEVIATHAN!
Post by: Heliopteryx on February 21, 2010, 09:49:55 AM
Deryn will probably try to tell him whenever she worls up the courage, but will always be interrupted.  Then, in one of the worst possible moments, it'll end up being revealed.  Alek wil feel all embarrassed and betrayed, but he will eventually realise that he's kinda overreacting.

(disclaimer) This is all just a wild guess.  I hope it doesn't cous a Schrodinger's Cat-like dilemma for the author.

One of the ways i thought she might be discovered is that she gets captured by the enemy, interrogated in some way and when Alek & Co. go to rescue her the enemy reveals her true identity. Leaving Alek shocked and yaddi yaddi yadda...

Doesn't make much sense as I type it out... Meh, whatever. *Shrug*

Yeah, that Mulan thing does sound plausible. Although I don't think that'll mean someone will grab her outta bed and throw infront of everyone to show them. lolz as Deryn said, it would be too barking embarrassing being outbested by a woman. And a teenager to top it  :P Deryn out rox any soldier any day X3
