Title: Little Things You Noticed
Post by: kay101 on September 22, 2011, 09:27:21 AM
This thread is for talking about the little things, not the big, epic, battle and/or kissing scenes. Anything a person may have missed when speed-reading through Goliath. So basically whatever little moments, phrases, or illustration details you found cute/funny/interesting/unusual etc. I'll start:

Back in Behemoth, when Alek and Deryn are balcony-hopping at the hotel to get the scroll, Alek says to Deryn "Have you lost your air-sense yet?" and Deryn replies "Hardly."
Now, in Goliath, in the second-to-last chapter when they are climbing the ratlines together, an injured Deryn says "Barking spiders, I've gotten soft!" and then it is ALEK who says "Hardly." I wonder if Scott did that on purpose.

i liked the vague, unnoticeable little paragraph on the civil war, how the south was darwinist and the north was clanker.
it got me thinking.

I haven't finished the book yet...but the first thing that caught my eye was in chapter one. My favorite part so far was when Deryn told Newkirk and Alek that they better eat their potatoes to warm them up and later on, Mr. Westerfeld wrote that Deryn went back to finish her "precious potatoes." It made my week. XD

I really liked the drawing of them both dripping wet after the Heruclean Inundation. I don't know why, but I found it cute.

The only thing that is cute when Alek and Deryn kiss. That is what I'm waiting for.

And I'll find the potatoe part, see if it is funny.

LIttle thing: In Draining, Alek is taller... cuz he's standing on a box. XD

Deryn talks about Alek getting that "daft look" on his face every once in a while.  I believe in those moments that he is in the process of falling in love with her, but neither realize it.

My favorite part so far was when Deryn told Newkirk and Alek that they better eat their potatoes to warm them up and later on, Mr. Westerfeld wrote that Deryn went back to finish her "precious potatoes." It made my week. XD

And remember in Leviathan, where Deryn is stealing potatoes off of the other boy's plates? I was reading Goliath to my little sister in the car on the way home from Barnes & Noble, and at the "potatoes" part, I put down Goliath, turned to her, and cried, "What is it with Deryn and potatoes!"
(My grandmother, who was driving, said after that, "The Irish eat lots of potatoes and drink lots of beer." Then my sister and I both snapped, "She's Scottish!" at the exact same time.)

Or...what about the part where Alek muses that you can always distract Deryn with food? Loved that.

Also loved the part where they met with Mr. Toyoda and Bovril repeated, "To-Yo-Da," because my family owns a Toyota.

the Toyoda and Ford thing was awesome!  My family is a Toyota family, except for my dad who has a Ford.  So I got really excited when I read the part where they med Toyoda.

One of my favorite quotes that happened to be during the kissing scene. but was probably overlooked by many because they were so caught up in the kissing, was:
'"What's wrong with everything?" he said, curling up against the cold and shutting his eyes. The world had broken the night his parents died, and just seemed to keep breaking.
Deryn shook him. "You've got a head wound, Alek. Don't fall asleep!"
He opened one eye "It's a bit cold for a nap."'

I just love that :)

I totally thought of Fureesha when they ate potatoes. I didn't notice that half way down the page at the part of Alek 'not feeling right' after his concussion changed from Deryn to Dylan until he said, "Dylan, you're a boy aren't you?" I was like What!? So I reread the last two pages.

i liked alex's one liner-"what a colossal exercise in idiocy"
that is one of the only things that i remember though, because i read it on barnes (is that how you spell it?) and noble or whatever in one night... and i can't get it untill october cause i live in australia!
that sucks.

The absolute BEST little thing was the illustration on page 222 I think, called "Drained". Alek is standing on a box so he looks taller. I almost died of laughter.

I absolutely LOVED when Volger said (and I'm sorry is this is slightly misquoted) "You're not looking so serene, Your Highness." I could NOT stop laughing.

The awkward part with Alek, Deryn, and Bovril where Bovril said "chest!" for Alek was amazing as well. It's just those funny little scenes that are truly awesome and made my friend yell at me for reacting to the book (she was waiting for me to finish so she could read it. She's sitting in front of me reading right now.)

Concussions...it's not a good thing. Suprised that Alek's still risking his head before a little less of eight months before his brain healed.

THey're not really ZOOKEEPERS, though. They're like diplomat ninjas.

It's so unfair that he mentioned this awesome secret society, and then just leaves us hanging. I'm imagining Deryn and Alek walking into the LEague of Extraordinary Gentlemen now. XD

I love it when Lilit says, "Well, you did risk your lie fighting for the revolution. I suppose the Ottoman Empire can buy you a movie ticket."

& Of course, every time Bovril says anything.

They're so many of these little moments (: I love them.

That's depressing. YOU BETTER READ GOLIATH.

Also, another favorite part of mine...I wasn't sure what part this was at, but sephamore flags were involved. Anyways, I think Deryn was signaling with the flags and Bovril was waving his little arms in the air, imitating her. c:

I am a die-hard Leviathan fan and a die-hard Hunger Games fan, and did any of you who have read Mockingjay notice this:
(From page 282 of Mockingjay)
Peeta: You're still trying to protect me. Real or not real?
Katniss: Real. Because that's what you and and I do. Protect each other."

(From page 535 of Goliath)
Alek: You've saved me from not having any reason to keep going.
Deryn: We save each other. That's how it works.

Similar eh? When Deryn said that, I was thinking "Just like in Mockingjay." There is definitely a reason why Katniss/Peeta and Alek/Deryn are my 2 favorite book couples ever.  ;D

YES I was.
If there was one thing in the book that I regretted not being in it, (forget secret societies, a missing reveal, and a not so detailed final picture of the book), it was the loris' "special powers". Does it have common sense or not? The closest we got to an answer was when Alek was trying to figure out who Deryn really was. He said something about the loris taking facts and wrapping them up into a neat little package... I think that was it.

i dunno, i always thought that the loris's were intelligent (even though its against the rules :O) and the fact that barlow wanted them to bond with people of power, who were clankers, (sultan and alek) could make the loris's a diplomatic thing (because thats what the Society does). i always just assumed it was to convince clankers that darwin fabs are the cutest things alive and are intelligent and useful to keep around

Yeah, I want to make a dress like that one. I wonder what color it is?? XD I also loved how Deryn was noticing the hemlines on the ladies dresses at the party.

One thing I thought was a little weird was when Dr. Barlow says, "You apparently have the ear--perhaps even the affections, though I shudder to think it--of the legal heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary." Why does that make her uncomfortable??  ???

Haha! That was basically my favorite line in the whole entire book! It made me smile. :)
I think she was just thinking like Volger. He must have rubbed a bit too much on her or something. Thinking Alek COULDN'T be in love with a commoner! That'd mess up everything!
Or maybe since she's thought them both boys and best friends for so long, anything other than that she just can't picture... or it freaks her out! :)

Not sure if anyone posted this yet, but I absolutely loved the part when Deryn said to Alek: "Alek, you may be in love with the Leviathan, but the Leviathan doesn't love you back." XDDD

I was reading this, and in the 100 ways to annoy Alek thread I said that the Leviathan doesn't love him back. Before the book came out.

MALES BEWARE. DISCUSSION OF FEMALE *AHEM* BODY PARTS AHEAD. READ ON AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Did any of you girls do a double take at the whole Deryn-being-bound bit?
My first reaction: OW. That'd hurt after doing it for months on end. Heck,  it would hurt after five minutes.

Second reaction: I know real people did that - Deborah Sampson, for one - but how? If you wound a cloth one way, it'd look... odd. It'd make more sense to have a binding going both ways, but still... it wouldn't hide it completely. You can only push your body so far until it refuses to go further.

Overall, I know it says she's small chested to begin with, and she doesn't eat a lot and she exercises, but still... I can't imagine she could possibly look as flat chested as a boy. You can't just make that disappear. Thoughts?

I crossplay/crossdress quite often. The key is to breathe out (have ribs fully expanded) and then wrap quickly and tightly. If you don't, you'll be pretty unable to breathe.

Loose clothing helps, too.

How does Deryn not eat a lot?  She's always stealing the other middies food and Alek even comments how food could always distract her.  Plus, as much exercise as she is doing, she'd have to eat a good deal to keep from passing out.

No, unless you don't expand your ribs. Or, if you use tape straight on without a bandage under/get tape on your skin, it hurts like hell to get it off, esp. on 'sensitive areas', ie, that area right below your armpit, more so if you move your arms/ stretch a bunch with tape on that spot.

Girls 100 years ago started much later than now a days.  15 was the average.  But since Deryn does exercise a ton, hers will probably start later.  I think ours start earlier now because of hormones used in food and such.

Also, Scott answered this question once on twitter and said that she hadn't started because of the above reasons

This is probably unrelated to her, but I also heard that girls who are really thin tend to stop or not have periods because menstruation is related to the fat in your body.

she's also now going to work for Dr. Barlow, who will be able to 'help' her with that sort of thing. You could possibly rig up a corset type thing if you don't need to be scrambling around all day.

I start giggleling everytime I read the part where the Loris rips off the mustache and goes 'Deryn Sharp' or Deryn. Also I don't know if this is because I am stupid but did Dr.Barlow's loris change colors slightly in the pictures, sometimes it was really dark and sometimes it wasn't really dark. But maybe I was looking at Bovril and not knowing it.

I also love the part where Deryn shoves Alek and then punches him.

It's because of the patriarchal shift in society. The very first societies and religions were female-oriented. Then patriarchy butted in (see the big three religions) and sexism was okayed for thousands of years.

What about it? Breast binding. It's a part of the book...
Title: Re: Little Things You Noticed
Post by: hyaloid on September 28, 2011, 12:16:19 PM
Basically, to bind you get a long strip of cotton, about half the size of one breast from top to bottom. This is wrapped semi-tightly around your chest while you push your ribs out. It ends up going to roughly an inch or two below your collarbone, and two or so inches below the end of your breast. Then, you get an elastic/sticky bandage and wrap it TIGHTLY over the cotton/linen first layer, while you push your ribs out (this is so you can breathe and is VERY IMPORTANT. you can hyperventilate otherwise.).
The end result is two smaller bumps on a chest that do not bounce around. If you wear the correct clothes, and keep your back straight, it helps the illusion.

OH, something i noticed about goliath was the part where deryn hurt her knee and alek helped her around after and took her to the washroom and she stood guard for her. i thought that was really cute and funny

'Twas cute.

I still think it'd be funny to see his thought proccess - he's a male, don't try to deny he thought this.

So... Deryn's a girl. *shifty glance* Where are her boobs?

I mean, it never says Deryn explains it to him, and yet when the dr freaks out, Alek is all 'Oh, she's bound.

How did he know - he was wondering... XD

Yes, that seems like it would be an awkward conversation. XD Where would Alek learn about chest-binding practices, though, considering he's probably had a pretty sheltered upbringing?

I love how this thread I started for noticing wee details in the book has turned into an instruction manual for breast-binding and discussing all of Deryn's girl "issues". Remember the "Girls Only" thread? Shouldn't this convo be taking place there? Lol, jk. I'm finding it all quite amusing. And all I can say is Deryn seems 10x more tough when you consider that she has to put up with all of THIS.

I do believe flappers used to wear undergarments to bind themselves. It was supposed to be soft and simple. But it still doesn't seem very comfortable.

I loved the part on page 460 when Alek is thinking about how he misses Bovril and it says "Alek found himself missing Bovril's weight on his shoulder and its nonsense mutterings, especially the snatches of Deryn's Scottish lilt" I don't know why but I thought that that part was so cute and shows just how he misses Deryn!

I just realized it was never actually MENTIONED in the first two books that Deryn binds her chest...we all just assumed she did, I guess. When I read that part in Goliath I was a bit surprised because it looked like Scott was going to avoid that stuff....I was also amused thinking about how Alek had figured it out xDDD

But GAH it sounds like it hurts. D:

Other comment - How old is the Kizar Agha?
Cuz when Lilit makes some comment about New York being a 'punishment', he says "Hopefully not too much of one, because you're here with me."

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but is he... hitting on her?

Oh no, I think he was just saying they sent HIM there too. So he hopes Lilit wasn't being punished because he, in turn, would be getting punished too. That's what I got from it...

i think it explains that lilit was just too feisty to stay in istanbul because she wanted womens rights and they didnt have time for that/are sextist/have a very patriarchal society.
doesnt it mention that she binds her chest at the beginning of leviathan? or maybe im confusing it with inferring/fanfic

also, does anyone else think that constantinople is an awesome name and is really fun to say?

I think it just says that Bauer is "a few years older than Alek" and that's the scene when Alek wakes up in the Stormwalker. I take that to mean early 20s. None of the other ages are mentioned, but Scott has said that Volger is 48 at a meet-up, and that Barlow's real-life birthday is the same (December 22, 1885), which makes her 28. (But 29 two days after the book ends, lol) It doesn't say that she's married in the books, but that was also confirmed by Scott at meet-ups.

Yeah, I think Alek said Bauer was 20 in the beginning of Leviathan. That was on page 41. I don't know how old the rest of the walker crew is.

And Scott almost killed me on page 316 of Goliath. When Dr. Barlow was talking to Adela Rogers, she said that, "The custom in Europe, Miss Rogers, is that only married women are kissed directly on the flesh. You young things are thought to be too easily swayed by the touch of lips." Darnit, she excluded herself from the "young things" which implies she must be married. :(

And yet, I am still in denial. :)

Ah, I'd forgotten about that.  ::) So, heavily implied in Goliath. Of course, she would not possibly be able to have the Barlow name without having been married to Sir Alan Barlow at some point... Her maiden name was "Darwin." She could be widowed, though, except that Scott told us she wasn't.

Of course, if something happened to Sir Alan, who would be Prime Minister Ramsay McDonald's Principal Private Secretary?? XD

The way I see it is, yes he is technically old enough to be her father. But Scott said he could be getting younger because Allan Cumming wants to play him in a movie if there is one. Allan Cumming is 38, so if you really want to push it he is 38. Plus, back then I’m sure the age thing wouldn’t be as big of a shock.

One thing I thought was odd was that Alek didn't bring up Lilit at all to Deryn. I don't think he even thought about her, until she showed up at that ball thing. And even then he just smiled and said something like, "Someone's here to see you". He must have thought about the whole thing before...
Title: Re: Little Things You Noticed
Post by: Darklighter152 on October 03, 2011, 12:49:56 AM
Lilit wasn't interested in Alek so he wouldn't be talking/thinking about her. Also, Alek sees her as a commoner, which could be another factor. During the ball, he had too much on his mind such as ending the war as his destiny, becoming future ruler, Tesla and his Goliath machine, and even Deryn. I think he said "someone's here to see you" to Deryn to tease her because of their past "relationship". He kind of thinks of Lilit when he figures out Deryn likes him because she was jealous of Lilit. Of course, don't take my word for it because I sped-read through it once. I will re-read the entire series after my college semester is over.

I think that's right, actually. Lilit never got to be a great matter of importance with him.

In answer to the hungover question, there WAS a small mentioning. It's after he went to Hearst's for dinner and he is getting ready for another dinner and it went something like "things were still a little unclear, or maybe that was just last night's brandy in his head" or something along those lines. I laughed at that.

And Lilit! <3 I LOVED the whole little "girl talk" scene that they had while watching the movie.

"Aye, and what exactly was it?"
"Curiosity."

I liked the part when they are watching "The Perils of Pauline" and Alek starts to imagine Deryn in her place and suddenly the picture becomes so clear to him. Then when it said, "By the time Pauline was hanging from the edge, her betrothed racing to save her in his walking machine, Alek's heart was pounding." was I the only one who thought that maybe since he was already imagining Deryn as Pauline, he almost started to imagine himself as her betrothed saving her in the walker?

I noticed something else. Deryn never tells Dr. Barlow what her real name is. And the first time she uses Deryn's real name is when she is telling her that wars always end, almost at the end of the book. How did Dr. Barlow figure out her real name?

One of my favorites was when the loris put on Eddie Malone's fake mustache. I just about rolled in the floor laughing!

I also liked the "Deryn Sharp. Quite dashing." bit.

I think my favorite line, though, was when Alek told Volger that if he ever threatened Deryn again, that their association would be over. I think that shows just how much Deryn means to Alek, since Volger has given up his whole livelihood to protect Alek.

I also liked when Deryn asked Dr. Barlow if she gave something to the Admiralty (I don't remember what it was, and I don't have my copy of Goliath with me so I can't look it up), and Dr. Barlow said "No. I gave it to someone with intellect."  ;D

Leviathan, chapter 6.
Quote
As the echoes died, Volger called, "Do you know how to load a Spandau machine gun, Alek?"
Prince Aleksandar knew nothing of the sort, but already his hands were moving to unbuckle his seat straps.

Leviathan, chapter 32.
Quote
She stared at Alek. "Do you want to me to drive this barking contraption now?"
"No," he said. "But tell me, do you know how to fire a Spandau machine gun?"

Deryn knew no such thing, but she'd fired an air gun plenty of times.

I really loved these parts, because they seem to show that Alek and Deryn aren't so different after all.

Hey! I'm resurrecting this thread because I noticed another cute little tidbit!

But before I get to it, I have to ask, where is everyone? Lately it seems like very few people post in the Levi thread sections anymore, at least, compared to how many people used to. Goliath came out a mere 2 months ago and yet a lot of people who used to post regularly have just disappeared? Or am I only hallucinating? There is still a some great topics being discussed, but to me the Levi thread page is a ghost town compared to what it used to be. Anyone agree/disagree?

Anyways, I was reading the part where the ship is first arriving in America and Alek and Deryn are watching out the window before Alek has to be unveiled for all of Hearst's reporters. Alek says something about how he's going to try to look dashing for the cameras and Deryn says suddenly "I'm sure you will" and then has to pretend to be looking around through her field glasses to avoid the fact that she just blurted that out. I love it when speaks before thinking, it's so funny.

Oh! One more thing, in the big, gigantic illustration of Japan that takes up 2 pages, I think I found the two of them sitting at the food cart. More towards the bottom right corner is the cart with a person with dark hair. Next to him is another person who looks a bit out of place with her blonde hair. I'm not positive, but I like to think that it's them. It's a lot like those I Spy books...gosh I've been rambling on forever, sorry for long post!

I was reading this whole thread and saw how unbelievably wrong it is. And I went upstairs and looked on page 313 to read about Alek's hangover. I was like, "Aleksandar! You naughty little prince!" and I like his line, "What a colossal exercise in idiocy." Plus the thing when Mr. Westerfeld was showing the cover of Goliath for the first time and he said, "Alek is standing on a box since Deryn is taller than him. That's barking princes for you." and "Draining." Alek is, what do you know, standing on a box. I'm eating precious potatoes tonight I think...

I haven't been on in while. Life's been busy, and I think a major contributer for the inactivity of users (well for me anyway), is by now we're in the thick of the school year and don't have as much time to spend on the computer.

And also, now that Goliath is out, there's not as much to speculate about anymore, and it's hard to continue thinking of new things to think of with such a limited amount of books to do it. I don't know, I still try to get on, just not as often.

This place is still nice, and I assume this section of the forum will pick back up again when, (if), Scott decides to add a mini-series at the end, or add some books or comics. We'll be waiting. :)

I didn't notice that until the fourth time I read the series.

Thoughts?
This confuses me because, in all the fanfics, they talk about Deryn binding her chest, but I couldn't find any mention of that in the series. Only "careful tailoring."

I think so!  And  the south has more swag than here up north,  (gave me an idea for a meme)  because everyone here is against collecting things,  and good music,  and ratrods....

In atlanta,  they called me the yankee spy,  and promptly recreated a civil war trial for me,  and damn near hung me but their  noose was a phony.  When they kicked the barrel out,  it pulled loose and I just fell on my ass.

Lol,  here when we did our one civil war reenactment,   I was general lee,  and we kicked ass!  (it was paintball)  we had the nerf swords and the cheap  24x36 flags from the dollar store.    We used guerilla warfare against grant and his yanks!!

I don't think nerf did either,   they were just... There at the hardware store,   really cheap,   next to the paintballs.   And then they had the cheaply made polyester hats that tried to look confederate/ union.   All together for each person they spent 26 dollars on everything.

Yeah... oddly I can't find any around here... retailers don't import um. Well, we still have the cheapo brand toysrus foam sword which works just as well, and costs $5

We always cut those down with a box knife so they looked like a rapier. And we reenforced them with hardwood dowels

One little thing I noticed was how handsome Mr. Klopp is. Page 498, Goliath, for an older guy, he looks good.
I love his expression in that picture! It's so self-satisfied and smug!

Speaking of accents I can do a really good British one.  And German.  If I'm speaking German at the time.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but in 'Draining', Alek is standing on a box. This is right after Deryn pointed out that she was taller than him XD

if you look at the picture "Blasé about old sights" (the one where  Deryn is eating potatoes.)
you can see a Message lizard underneath the table and it looks like it's eating crumbs.

I really don't know if anyone noticed this, but when I did, it was pretty cool.

I was re-reading the Leviathan series one time (I do this a lot  :D) and I noticed that in Behemoth, on page 438, Alek mentions that in Lienz, he saw a beggar with no legs pushing himself around on some sort of cart.  If you look in Leviathan, on page 118, with the illustration "The Streets of Lienz", you will see a man on a wheel-cart with no legs begging for money.  (I think that he was behind Alek.)

I noticed while stalking old threads. Someone mentioned it about three years ago.
Another one pointed out in that thread was that in the two-page picture of the Dauntless, in the bottom-left corner, there's two guys holding rope. Then, in the picture when Deryn is awesomely defending the Dauntless from hijackers, the guy she's swinging at is one of the same guys!

There was a part in the end of the mid section of the book where Scott referred to our favorite Loris as a 'her'.

are you sure that wasn't a typo? Because in the majority of the books Borvil is referred to as a "he."
Title: Re: Little Things You Noticed

Actually, Bovril is an "it". All the fabs are. The Leviathan is only called "she" because it is a ship and ships are "she".
