Title: Book Recommendations
Post by: Polandeer on February 07, 2012, 01:10:53 PM
Here is a place for book recommendations...
For example:

Post 1: I'd like to read a book like Example the First.
Post 2: I'd like to read a book about testing.
Post 3: I'd like to read a book like Example Author's books
Post 4: *Quotes Post 2* Try the book called Test 1. You may like it
Post 5: I'd like to read a book about example.com
Post 6: *Quotes Post 5* I think you may like All about iana
Post 7: *Quotes Post 1* How about Example the second?
Post 8: *Quotes Post 3* How about Example Writer's books? Maybe the Death of Example?

It was just to say there's no order. Just look at Post 1 and Post 7 to see what I mean.

You don't have to make everything 'efficient' and 'ordered'. The best book recs I get are just from chatting with friends.

Oh ok. I want to read a book like Stardust by Neil Gaiman.

I have not read his books but they are hardly praised and his film Mirrormask was out of this world and good.

You MUST read his books, I've read Stardust, Anansi Boys, and Coraline. Stardust was SO original(but the movie was better), Anansi Boys was just brilliant, and Coraline is very spooky but in a semi-kid friendly way.

They are bad and ruin the first book. You can read a few reviews about the third's awfulness here:
I especially like the one by Emily Rose.

Quick Spoler about the review:

"And then Dashner decides to put the cherry on top and KILL POOR TERESA!!! And he only spent half a page on it and then it was over with and Thomas hardly suffered a bit. It was in no way dramatic enough and in no way served Teresa right."

That was by far my favorite part of the review.

Hm. Hard one. The best thing I can think of at the moment is the name of the wind but it's more like the Lord of the Rings than it is like the Lost Hero.

Ah. You may like little brother, Cory Doctorow or maybe The Maze Runner. Gone isn't really dystopian but it may suit your needs. If you're really desperate you might like Witch and Wizard by James Patterson.

BTW, these are all in my library and I'll let you "borrow" any/all of them at any time!

LOL I've tried or read all of those. I started Little Brother but found myself comparing it too much to Brain Jack by  Brian Faulkner and I was bogged down with books so I returned it to the library. I've read Maze Runner and Scorch Trials(I also have the Death Cure but haven't read it yet) and I LOVE Gone, I have the first 3 and plan to get the 4th and 5th together when the 5th comes out and reread the whole series.

I kinda want to read it because I learned about the movie that is going to have Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Mary Todd Lincoln. I've had a bit of a crush on her since she played in Scott Pilgrim. Anyone, Divergent is a GREAT read for any Hunger Games, Uglies, or Young Adult fiction fans in general.

I liked Matched, but it isn't nearly as good as Divergent(for me) and I am currently obsessing over Scored by Lauren McLaughlin.

Divergent is a trilogy where only the first book has been released, I don't really like it. Two star.

Yeah, it is a trilogy. I REALLY loved it, one of my favorite modern dystopias. And I'm very critical of my dystopias, especially now that everyone and their moms are writing them. The author is Veronica Roth, just to let you know.

What's it about?
It's in a future society where instead of standardized tests(SAT or ACT) you(with a proper registration) are watched by eyeballs(cameras) that are almost EVERYWHERE, they are hooked to a software program and they know you, how you think, and they score you based on certain qualities of "fitness". Such as Peer Group(interacting with your fellow score groups, which are by 10s, so if you are a 67 then you are in the 60s), Rapport, Behavior(decisions), Determination, etc. The score is a way for anyone to be successful, no matter what their background. After a certain line of score then you get free schooling to anywhere for anything you want to do. Imani is a high scorer who has to question her loyalty and society when she is faced with the decision of dumping her friend who has now fallen in the scores or fall herself, just for staying with her friend who is now out of her peer group.(THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING THOUGH!!)
