Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?

I'm going with Uglies. It's more original. Putting a bunch of teenagers in a arena to kill each other for sport? That's something that's been done since Lord of the Flies came out. Plastic surgery for everyone...haven't seen that before.
And, on a scale of toughness, we all know Tally could break Katniss over her knee like a twig.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on May 02, 2012, 03:21:37 AM
Only when she supped herself up, normal Tally would be dead in 10 seconds.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 02, 2012, 05:02:27 AM
Undeniablly. But what's the fun in thinking of that fight? I'd prefer one where Katniss is running for her life and Tally's searching for her as a Special...oh, fanboy shivers.
And then of course Hester Shaw would come from no where and own them both.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 03, 2012, 07:06:23 AM
I prefer the writing style of Uglies, but I like THG for its symbolism. I haven't seen much of that discussed for Uglies yet--maybe I'll go post a topic for that right now!
They're hard to compare because the themes are pretty different--Uglies is about how people are controlled by their desire to be perfect, whereas THG highlights how corrupted reality television and the media as entertainment are.

I HAVE ONLY READ UGLIES, AND I REALLY DONT WANT TO READ THE HUNGER GAMES BECAUSE I HEARD ITS ABOUT KIDS KILLING OTHER KIDS

NO BOOK WILL EVER BE AS GOOD AS UGLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe reading The Hunger Games will give you some deeper insight as to why you love Uglies so much ;) Also, the killing is a metaphor--a concept that I have had to explain to a lot of people who find the plot "immoral."

Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 03, 2012, 09:19:33 AM
I'd say THG and Uglies are about as far apart from each other as you can get without going into a different genre.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 03, 2012, 10:36:02 AM
The plots are completely different, but as far as theme, they both focus on how the media influences our culture and both use a love triangle to represent a character's two possible "paths" for life.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 03, 2012, 11:14:33 AM
Probably enough to get the fans comparing them. Actually, wait, no, it defenantly is. That's why we're having this discussion on these forums.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 03, 2012, 11:43:27 AM
They also have the stupid love triangle. I get that it's symbolic, and it's cool, but way overused. I want to write a story like that WITHOUT an LT where the romance still holds symbolism but isn't obvious. I'm kind of getting at it with the story I'm working on right now, but I still have so. much. planning. to. do.

But back on the topic of similarities, both appeal to the same fan base, so there are definitely similarities. They also both contrast a rough, poor-but-enlightened lifestyle with an indoctrinated, wealthy society.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 03, 2012, 11:53:14 AM
The Love Triangle is so cliche it's got a TV Tropes page devoted to it's clicheness.
Actually, that's...no, wait, never mind, there's love triangles in Mortal Engines. Actually, Leviathan doesn't have any, ironically. Just Alek and Deryn. There's Lilit, but who the splice knows what goes on in HER head...And there's almost no romance in Boneshaker.
Well, don't rush. No one knows it's coming...don't hurry it out. Take your time. Perfect it. Make it AWESOME.

I've noticed this too. Like how fans of Leviathan tend to be fans of Kenneth Oppel's Airborn series.

Well, don't rush. No one knows it's coming...don't hurry it out. Take your time. Perfect it. Make it AWESOME.

Planning on it xD I've got pages and pages in my Gdocs of planning and replanning. I think I'll get a ridiculously detailed outline out, then do the draft for the next NaNoWriMo.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 03, 2012, 01:21:39 PM
Oh yes...I love that one too. And of course we know it's viable. Which leads to the possiblity of a crack paring between Lilit and Fever Crumb...

Good...good...I shall read it when you post it.

Might take you up on that it I need someone to read stuff for me :D
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?

I can beta read stuff, sure thing. Done it for a good long time on DA and FF.N. And it would be good to read the work of someone who actually knows what they're doing.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?

Lol I don't really know what I'm doing, I've just been doing it for a long time, so I've gained some insight :D

Every actual experienced author ever is laughing at my use of the term "a long time." xD
Oh my god. I do not understand people who put their writing online with so many grammar mistakes! If you can't spell simple words, you're clearly not trying.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 04, 2012, 06:49:01 AM
Eh. Let them. And I double posted or some reason, hell if I know why.
Agreed. And DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON THEIR "stories". So many canon errors, OOCness, OC's dropoing in from no where...and MARY SUES GALORE.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 04, 2012, 06:56:33 AM
I feel like a lot of people use fanfiction to write what they originally wanted to be an original story, but they threw other characters in so that they could post it on Fanfic and have people actually read it.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 04, 2012, 07:02:05 AM
That is actually an amazingly apt theory. And it certainly makes sense.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 04, 2012, 07:04:48 AM
I was thinking about it when going through the archives for MI and noticing that most of the stories are AU and usually very OOC. The point of the series is the magic, but most of them take place in the real world.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 04, 2012, 07:07:29 AM
Well what the hell is the point of that! It's like Harry Potter without magic, or Leviathan set in the modern day.
MI is Mortal Instruments, I assume.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 04, 2012, 07:11:36 AM
Of course :D Have you read it?
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 04, 2012, 07:13:46 AM
No, but I've heard of it. Like I said before to someone else; not a huge magic/fantasy fan.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 04, 2012, 07:15:58 AM
I like MI and a few others, but the majority of what's coming out right now is pretty bad :P Disappointing. So much potential symbolism!
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 04, 2012, 07:17:41 AM
Ageed. A lot of people are trying to ride the wave of Twilight's success. Which is frustrating, because it means no good steampunk is coming out.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 04, 2012, 07:22:34 AM
And no original plot lines. Or themes. I like messages. They keep things interesting.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 04, 2012, 10:58:56 AM
Yeah, big pain in my ass too...well, means we could do that and make a killing, right?
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 04, 2012, 11:11:49 AM
Do which one? An original fantasy with an actual message? That's my current endeavor :D
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 04, 2012, 11:40:07 AM
Yeah, pretty much. Good, now I have more reason to read your stuff. And I'll work on my post-apocolyptic eugenics virus idea.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 04, 2012, 12:02:37 PM
THAT sounds interesting. We might need to do a story trade sometime soon.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 04, 2012, 02:28:00 PM
I'd be up for that. Or work together on an Uglies fanfic to blow all the other fanfics out of the water. But that's just me.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 04, 2012, 08:42:39 PM
That sounds like a good idea. Haven't ready many Uglies fanfics, how are they?
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 05, 2012, 12:41:44 AM
Most...tend to suck. Lost of OC's (of course), grammar all over the place, and a couple of people who actually tried to write the fifth book (apperently titled "Cakes"). Other than that...nothing good.
My hope for it would be to touch on something no one in the series seems interested; the actual Oil Bug. We know nothing about it except that it set gas on fire, and it nailed us to the door in a day. And there's only one very lack-luster fic for it about some dude running through a burning city. Which would be great, except he obviously didn't know the Rusty Ruins are the remains of Seattle. Meaning that (as a Seattliete myself) I could write a much better one.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 05, 2012, 04:36:04 AM
The last word of every Uglies book pluralized is the title of the next. "Make me pretty." "Now you're special." The last line of Extras is Frizz saying "Have some cake."
Ughhh, someone should write an Uglies fic. The oil bug would be cool, but the OCs would have to be pretty awesome.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 05, 2012, 04:43:58 AM
That's my theory. And what's supported in Boguse to Bubbly.
Actually, I thought up a cool OC. The story is him trying to get out of Seattle, which has gone to complete hell thanks to the Bug. It's more of a one-shot than anything else. And it ends with him jumping onto a Mag-Lev train and watching one of the really big fuel tanks we have here go up. Honestly, it's kind of a novelization of what I'd do if the Oil Bug actually came.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 05, 2012, 04:47:18 AM
I'd get on a horse and head for Idaho! :D Except hopefully I would not be on Cape Cod. WORST place to be during an apocalyse. We're at sea level, so if the seas rise, we're dead. We have no renewable resources, so if food gets cut off, we're dead. Out water is salt, so when the wells dry up, we're dead. To get on or off, there are two bridges and a canal. If the bridges collapse, and you don't have a boat, you're dead.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 05, 2012, 05:31:52 AM
The approximate location of the future Smoke. Very smart. We could meet up and form a milita to fight off the cities. Or something. Woo militas.
Yeah...sounds like you'd be screwed if you were there. And if what I know of the oil bug, those bridges would get blown up pretty quickly. I wouldn't worry about the seas rising, though. The city would burn long before that. Though it would undoubtedly get flooded. The map in Bogus to Bubbly shows New York deep underwater, so Cape Cod would get drowned too.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 05, 2012, 05:49:08 AM
We always die in post-apocalypses. Always. Cape Cod was just not a good idea.
We can start a farm and defend it with our mounted militia!
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 05, 2012, 06:21:56 AM
Well, how were the founding fathers supposed to know the sea level would rise? Hell, when they made Cape Cod, they hadn't even THOUGHT of the internal combustion engine and thought dinosaurs were killed off by God.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 05, 2012, 06:23:47 AM
Also; hell yes on mounted militia. It'll be like the Smoke...except if Special Circumstances came around, there hovercars would be met with a rain of SAMs and AAA fire. Anyone who made it to the ground would be charged by people on horseback with .30 rifles. .30 cal should be big enough to punch through Special flesh...and since they've never actually been in a fight, you kill one and they all run (I've thought this out a little too deeply. Comes from being a military fan.)
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Khoela on May 05, 2012, 06:42:33 AM
Haha xD Stuff I know nothing about! Woo!
Yeah, you're definitely gonna be in charge of weaponry in our Smoke. I'll stick to horses xD
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on May 05, 2012, 06:50:33 AM
Yeah, leave that to me ;D
Work fine. To each their own. Together, we'd be unstoppable. Actually, I may just have to write a fic about this...I can already see the opening sentence;
"Shay thought it was going to be a routine tag-and-bag mission...until something white shot up from the forest below her and blew apart the hovercar next to hers".
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?

I might as well send you what I have now. It's not much (did some Live while I was off) but It's a start.
Smoked Out

Shay thought it would be a standard tag-and-bag mission. The kind that normal Specials could have handled, not her and the rest of the Cutters. Just another small wanna-be Smoke out in the middle of no-where.
Then something white shot up from the dense trees her hovercar was flying over, and blew apart the one next to hers.
At first, she didn't think it was real; just an optical illusion.
Then the severed arm of one of the occupants slammed into her windshield.
She yelled (not screamed, she told herself, Specials don't scream) and shoved the controls to the right. The hovercar tilted, and barely avoided another white pillar of what Shay could now see was smoke.
She didn't have enough time to put cause and effect together before she was suddenly falling through the air in a cloud of debris.

Nice! When you have a little more, I'll help you with the revisions :D I'm picky and pretentious, which is why I'm sought out as an editor for every writing assignment we get. My friend owes me a half-hour where I get to whine about my story's plotlessness because I skipped lunch to edit his final essay and basically saved his butt by a letter grade.

As far as the story goes, the only things I'd change are a couple of word choices, some line breaks and a hyphen, which is basically nothing.

I would be too, actually xD Maybe I'll go into publishing instead... maybe that could be my excuse to drop that second AP history course next year... except I don't want to :P They only run AP euro once in a while, and it's looking good this year for enrollment.

I'm planning on it, but everyone's saying I'm crazy because I'm going to be taking AP english, AP usII, AP euro, french 4, german 2, honors chem, and honors precalc in the same year, with band. People are starting to fear for my sanity. I also get a little compulsive about getting straight As, which might not always be possible next year.

TA is a fun job. I was one for the gym teacher at my school because he could trust me to do errands for him and not sneak of to smoke/have a quickie in the closet with a cheerleader. Or steal his money if he sent me out to get something for his lunch. I got to tell a bunch of big athletic kids what to do. Fun times.

Actually, no. Not dolphins as in the bottlenose, anyway. It's too cold. We DO have Orcas, though. Which are just as cool, and actually technically dolphins. Hell, our Orca's are the most studied group of the species on the whole planet. About 3/4 of everything we know about them comes from our resident and transient pods.

Wow. I want to see an orca. They're so cool.
We have dolphins, but not all year. Occasionally we'll get a lost manatee, and then IFAW will seriously mishandle the situation and try getting it back to Florida... in a Penske truck.

They really are. So huge, and yet at the same time so smart. Almost, if not more so, than both dogs and monkeys.
Wow. A manetee that far north really is lost. I'd like to see thatm, though. Mantee in a truck. They must speed something feirce.

Ugh. It was bad. I went to the loading, it was just lying there on a blanket. Needless to say, it died on the trip. I'd have left it in the harbor, or dropped it off in Maryland instead of going all the way to FL.

Same. Or I'd have stuck it in a hot tub.

I've started reading the Hunger Games but i cant get into it, i think its because its in first person where as im used to third.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?

Ew, I hate third person books.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on October 07, 2012, 08:17:53 AM
You probably like more description and less emotion. 1st gives you emotion, 3rd gives you description.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?

it is.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on October 07, 2012, 03:25:29 PM
I like to mix it up. If I'm doing a thing with a lot of action and tech, I do third person. If it's more character focused, I do first.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on October 07, 2012, 03:26:20 PM
Well that makes sense.
Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on October 07, 2012, 03:29:06 PM
Strangely though, when I do a lot of romance, I go third person...its easier to flit between the two partners that way, show both sides of their passion.

Darn, I'm writing a short paper on Loners that's due in less than 24 hours and I have to  include 2 loners and I disagree that Dunk is a loner from the Hedge Knight and I didn't read the Wheel of Time short story.

Yeah, I really liked her. She DID give me the power to control the Drama class play for my last year...it was AWESOME. Best play she'd seen in a long time apperently. And all I had to do was take this lame high-school based one, put it in a sci-fi universe and everything was AWESOME.

Title: Re: hunger games or uglies?
Post by: Straif on October 07, 2012, 04:17:42 PM
Yes, actually. I love acting, almost as much as I love writing. The whole fiction, being someone else if just for a little bit...its great fun really. Especially when we got to make up our own characters. Everyone else did lame shit (lazy assholes), but I carted out a character I'd thought up weeks before. Great times...everyone else was stumbling over what their character would do in a situation because they hadn't thought beyond their name and here I was giving frekaing speaches..

That's why I always liked Halloween as a child, I loved being someone else for a few days, my Bff and I used to come up with name and freak out the people we tricker treated from.
