Title: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on May 19, 2012, 01:10:52 PM
I feel alone because I liked Extras more than the other 3 books. Am I alone?
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Beth-la on May 19, 2012, 01:44:56 PM
I liked Extras! Most people didn't I think because they thought it would be exactly like the first 3 books, but I don't think they understand the concept of a companion novel. I personally enjoyed it.

I liked it. A lot. How much? I thought up a whole BARKING CLIQUE because of it. Combining the Crim's obsession with "bubblyness" and Aya's city's love of fame and power. How do you get those two together? Reenact military stunts. And so were born the Mils.

I loved Extras. I really liked Aya, I felt like she had more personality than Tally :3

I like Extras the best

I really liked not having to deal with Tally, I just didn't find her that interesting.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Straif on May 20, 2012, 07:19:38 AM
Youngblood's pretty bland for a protagonast, I agree. She's like Maximum Ride, except she angsts for no reason other than she thinks she looks ugly. How funny that, (according to Shay's Story, anyway) were she to go to a current highschool there's be boys dropping at her feet begging to suck her toes. And a nerd would decaptiate someone with a locker upon realizing who she is.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on May 20, 2012, 07:30:55 AM
Whoa, that's what they do at public high schools? Man I'm glad that I never went to one, Sucking on toes? For real?
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: tridecagirl on May 20, 2012, 07:32:41 AM
No. I go to a public HS. No toe sucking.

I didn't like it because Aya was just... a brat. (So was Tally, but Aya really got on my nerves.) All she cared about was being famous, and she even betrayed the only people who were nice to her to get a story. Wanting fame for happiness is just as shallow as wanting beauty for the same reason. And unlike Tally, I don't think Aya ever realized that.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Straif on May 20, 2012, 07:48:21 AM
It doesn't happen, no. I'm just using it as an example of why Tally has no reason to angst and gripe, at least when she's an ugly.

Aya really was kinda a brat, it's true. Her priorities were certainly in the wrong place.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Eraisuithiel on May 20, 2012, 02:30:30 PM
I think the main reasons I didn't like Extras were:

1. I was first introduced to Scott-la through the Uglies trilogy, and was absolutely in love with it. When Extras came out I was so excited for it, but when I found that it was based around a totally different character and had a wildly different plot, well... I was a little disappointed.

2. For my 9th grade english class I had to write a book report, and I chose to do one on Extras. It was a bloody intense report where I had to analyze every single sentence, and by the end of it I just wanted to tear the book into little pieces and tell my teacher to suck it. :|

3. Aya just... bugs me. I prefer Tally.

I still think Extras is good as a companion novel, but it will never compare to the rest of the series for me.

Well writing a hard paper on anything is a good way to ruin it for yourself.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Seth-la on May 21, 2012, 01:35:12 PM
I LOVED Extras. I liked the whole idea of the new world. I kind of wish that Scott would have a waited a bit and made Extras a whole companion SERIES. Set after the events in Uglies just like it was but more fleshed out. Extras coinsided so well with the time of the boom of online media and social networking in our own society.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on May 21, 2012, 01:39:47 PM
Yeah, he really could have turned it into a series, it was a really neat city that Aya lived in.

YES!! I love the magnetic trains . . .what did he call them . . . crap*fishes in bookshelf for Extras*

Another three books would have been really nice...
Mag-Levs.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Seth-la on May 21, 2012, 01:43:31 PM
Thank you! And yes . . . that's exactly what I had in mind. Since Uglies was supposed to be a trilogy then make a companion series as a trilogy.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on May 21, 2012, 01:44:24 PM
I also wanted to get to meet the real Frizz, not one that couldn't tell lies.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Straif on May 21, 2012, 01:47:10 PM
Yeah. A prequel on what he was like before the mind surge, or rather AFTER since he got rid of it. And I actually had an idea for a story with that, unoffically titled "Cakes" (obviously). Something about a cliche devoted to war history going too far and Aya getting caught in it when she trys to kick the story (I doubt fame would stop her from doing what she loves)
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Seth-la on May 21, 2012, 01:48:10 PM
:o :o :o The trilogy could have had a new POV each time. The first two being people from different cliques and the third book POV being what Extras actually was(Aya's rise to fame; Tally's reappearance; and the Extras).
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on May 21, 2012, 01:51:40 PM
I'm liking this idea.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?

Thanks! I may actually write this as a fanfiction some time. Fleshed out the cliche too.

I loved Extras, I liked the whole Japanese spin, I didn't like Aya but I loved the new world and city and seeing how life is after the change.  The surfer clique was pretty awesome too.

Welcome Marisa!!! I see you have a Legend of Korra profile pic. There are a ton of Avatar/Korra fans on here, there's even a few topics.

Not an extras fan... AT ALL. I hated thw fact half the time she had that little pet bot with her. (Yes I know the name of the thing.) And then I didn't get it was in a different country till after the first part.

You know, considering how popular the series is now, there's probably a group of Manga Head in Aya's city who've copied the Korra/Avatar style.

Title: Re: Who liked Extras?

And Tally wasn't?
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Seth-la on July 07, 2012, 01:44:43 PM
People are more forgiving of Tally's annoying-ness due to her being the first main character as well as her turning out to be a savior of humanity. If we had had some sort of ending like that for Aya then she might be looked at differently, just like if Aya had come first she might be looked at differently.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Straif on July 07, 2012, 06:12:34 PM
Im thinking something similar. Though the fact remains, Tally is kind of thick-headed.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on July 08, 2012, 06:30:31 AM
She is almost Bella Swan thick if you ask me, Straif, and Seth, that's what I'm talking about. I have a problem with people that idolize Tally for no other reason than "She's Tally! She saved the World!" I mean if you really think about it, what did she intentionally do for the good of the world?
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Straif on July 08, 2012, 06:38:09 AM
Oh boy is she ever...the only thing she has going over Swann is her Specialisations.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on July 08, 2012, 06:46:19 AM
If you really think about it, she chickened out on a friend and didn't go to the smoke, was a cowered and did the bidding of Dr. C and sold that friend out, after stealing that friends crush. Then after that she went along for the ride and tried to save them, not because she felt too terrible about it, but because of how she thought that David would hate her forever is she did nothing.

In then second book, she become pretty and the only reason she fought against it, was because of a boy, Zane, without him, the series would have ended there. Then it would have ended again if he wasn't there with her when they found the pills. Then it would have ended again, with her dying if she didn't fall in that water and the Indians didn't see her features.

We shouldn't hold her up on a golden throne for that and call her God.

Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Straif on July 08, 2012, 06:51:17 AM
Thank you! And, from my perspective, its annoying she thinks herself so GOOD, when in reality someone like ME (read: atheltically lame book nerd) could take her down if given a medium sized rifle and a good perspective on her! Theres a reason Deryn and Hester Shaw are above her on my list of badass girls. Actually, now that I think about it, Katniss is over her too.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on July 08, 2012, 06:56:27 AM
Of course Kat is, I mean Kat's a hunter that knows how to kill, and does it with pure skill and no cheap tricks, Tally's like "I don't want to break a nail." In the 1st 2 books then in the third. "I like being up people because they have no weapons and I am physically stronger than them." She makes me sick.  :P
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Straif on July 08, 2012, 07:02:05 AM
She doesnt turn me that far, but I will admit I read the series for the universe and not her. Actually, her lameness is part of what spawned the Mils cliche for me...I wanted to make a group that was like Tally's Crims, but without the weakness and patheticness. Hence "Dauntless" Railer and her boyfriend "Stang", my protagonists.

I've heard, you keep talking about the mills, and sorry if y ranting is a little strong, but I just read City of Fallen Angels yesterday and I don't like Clary much and I'm working all this hate out of my system.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?

Is fine. Im in Germany and I just went to this bookstore that supposedly had a nice sellection of English books? Guess what? Sellection= FUCKING HUNGER GAMES AND HARRY POTTER. And some new Riordan. NOTHING ELSE.
As for the Mils, Ill be doing more with them soon. On Dauntless and her nickname: How badass is she? During her inittiation, she shruged herself out of a nanoparachute to land on a pair of love making pretties. On purpous.

Haha @Luna Clary is one of the worst(I prefer Isabelle in that series). @Straif, you naming your character Dauntless reminded me of Divergent and the Dauntless from it. ) Oh and Tris>Tally.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Beth-la on July 08, 2012, 11:08:41 AM
Yeah, but Tris can be really weird sometimes. I feel like she sometimes does things that aren't true to her character. I liked Lynn and Marlene, even though we don't see them much.

Are they from Insurgent? I don't remember them in Divergent and I haven't read Insurgent.

Actually its a refference to the Dauntless dive bomber used during WW II. As Dauntless "Dive Bombed" the two pretties. Ironically, as this is an Extra-based thread, she wears at least a partial hoverball rig most of the time...

I think they were in Divergent, but briefly. Marlene was the girl that Uriah shot the arrow at the apple on top of her head, and Lynn was the one that was always with Uriah and Marlene and generally hated everyone.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?

Lynn was kind of goth/punk and at the very beginning with Four wasn't she? Marlene, I sort of remember. I must reread Divergent before I read Insurgent.

Oh...my bad. I do remember us having a conversation about The Hunger Games while I was in Germany.
But, back on subject, yes, Tally isn't exactly idol worthy. But then again, Aya's not the smartest kid.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?

I think out of that whole book I liked Frizz and Rem the best. Aya made me throw the book down a couple of times.

I loved Extras! That moment where Frizz explain why Aya is different from him because she hadn't checked her face rank in an hour was amazing. That whole scene where her story first kicks is incredible writing. It was one of my favorites parts of the book.  I also love how the Sly Girls don't mind she's been recording them. Most writers would have written the girls freaked out or never found out, but Scott is amazing in his story twists and turns. Extras is by far my favorite book, because you get to see Tally from someone else's point of veiw and really shows her in a new light.

Aya really did have a social problem.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Catvomitsky on December 01, 2013, 04:44:12 AM
It mentioned in Extras several times that she had friends, but was just not well-known. I think her main problem wasn't that she had no social life, it was that she cared more for fame than being happy. Taking Moggle away would possibly help Aya make friends and take her focus away from being famous, but I wouldn't want to kidnap poor Moggle D:
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Luna Lovegood on December 23, 2013, 08:56:30 AM
I don't know, I feel like if she had actually good friends she wouldn't want to be famous because she wouldn't have this sense of loneliness that she seemed to have. Moreover, they would have talked her out of doing stupid things like getting involved with the sly girls, which let's face, were sort of like  gang.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Catvomitsky on December 23, 2013, 11:37:02 AM
True, but I felt like it was the fault of their society for placing more worth in fame than true friendship, and saying that you need to be known to have worth.
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Panzercrappitastica on December 23, 2013, 11:38:35 AM
Why can't people just have a non-corrupt society for once?
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?
Post by: Catvomitsky on December 23, 2013, 01:07:18 PM
Well, who would want to read about a society like that? XD

Part of the reason I loved that Scott added Extras was that it showed that even after the mind-rain, the society was still corrupt. In a different way, perhaps, as its flaws were more covert, but it was still messed up. Like Snow and Coin in THG, Coin turned out to be jut as bad as Snow. Societies always find a way to corrupt themselves, start wars, etc. It's just human nature, and I thought Extras conveyed that beautifully. Plus, we got to see more of the best universe in the fiction world! But I didn't like how Tally and the Cutters turned out, they didn't seem in character enough. Tally was mostly cured at the end of Specials, but in Extras she seemed kind of...unstable. I guess it just goes to show you that people, like societies, regress back into evil. But still, it's Tally! We never got a satisfactory ending for her! All throughout Extras, it seemed like Scott was going to give her some sort of closure, but then he didn't. She kissed David, but she did that at the beginning of Uglies. So she didn't really progress at all! Not that I ship Tally and David, but they should've at least made up. Or maybe Tally could've cured herself. Or gotten back her old face.
Or something! *spazzes*
Title: Re: Who liked Extras?

But LotR is the best fictional universe. Anyway, I agree with all of that.

Post by: Luna Lovegood on December 23, 2013, 03:46:42 PM
Or sacrificed her self, and Aya could have learned that fame isn't everything, sometimes you do what you do not to get ahead or to get famous. But because there's no other choice.

True, very true, but I think it would've been more satisfying for the readers if she had lived. Not that I have a problem with protagonists or characters in general dying, it's just that in Uglies I don't think it would've been right. Aya's government is not corrupt enough to die for, and the lesson about game that you mentioned would be more meaningful if Aya learned it herself, which she did, kind of. And if Tally was to die, it should be for something worthwhile. Books are written for their readers, and since Tally is not real, I dot want her to die even if it would be best for her. And I still think she had a chance at happiness.
