I thought it was okay. Rather entertaining to read... Much better than many other YA books these days, but it's just because I hate fantasy...

Do you not like the books themselves, or all the propaganda and attention they're getting?

Yeah. The attention they're getting is way too much, which is why some people hate the books, or the whole series.  ;D

But seriously, I'm still waiting for Mortal Engines movie to be made... It was also published by scholastic... like 8 years earlier...

Yeah, I guess that's kinda true, I used to like it but then I read some other books and it kinda disgusted me that the books I read we're so much better than HG, it just gets undeserved fame, anyways when I was reading the books they just progressed and got worse AAND worse, it was totally uninteresting, so I just dont like the books

You sound a little like me. You just go through a reading PHASE. It's like if the book is semi-decent then it's your new FAVORITE book(while you are reading) but then you finish and get another book and it's WAY better(or so it seems). It's "new toy syndrome".

Don't worry, the topic creator has been diagnosed with new toy syndrome, which is very common(I sometimes suffer from it as well).

::)

HG was a good BOOK. Just the first one. It went down hill from there.
I feel like the last book was just a huge let down. I waited in line to buy it at midnight and then it just wasnt worth it (though the cupcakes were good :p)
So I don't hate HG, I really did love it but it's not the best book out there.
Of course...nothing will EVER live up to Harry potter in my mind :p only book that has ever come close is GOne  :p

I don't get the new toy syndrome... that takes 2 years or more for that to happen.... *I'm looking at 2007 optimus prime*  ;D

Personally I love the Hunger Games...the book, not the whole series. Like everyone else has been saying, the first book is the best xD I really hated the third one. I could hardly get through it. Everyone gave me so much crap because I stopped reading it right in the middle, but it was just so boring and so annoying and I just hated it. A lot. The other two were good, in my opinion. The second one was good mostly because of Finnick.

Hmm... all 3 seemed okay. if anything the middle one seemed forced just to get that little bit more of story...

Yeah, the 2nd was slowest for me. The very beginning, because nothing happened. Once the training/games started it was good and Johanna and Finnick made the second book good.

Well yeah, she kind of did force that one. It was supposed to be a stand alone, but so many fans wanted more that she made it a trilogy. But I really loved the characters in the second one, which I guess is why I like it. Plus it still had to do with the Hunger Games, and the third one didn't...I dunno. I just hated the last one.
The first is still the best, though.

I liked the second one....mainly cause I liked finnick (first character I actually enjoyed)
third book just ruined it all for me. and now all this attention its getting....ruined it more :(
this is why I'm glad uglies will probs never be a movie. gooood. I dont want it to be ruined in my mind.
sigh...I hope City of bones doesnt get ruined too...

it was not as horrible as I expected. then again-I went in with really low expectations :P

...which I also did for Harry Potter 7 1 and 2 and I absolutely loved those movies :) yay thinking a movie will suck...then it's better than you thought-making it a good movie ;P

I can't imagine Cassandra letting them ruin City of Bones.

And as for me, the second book was my favorite because of Finnick and Mags (am I the only one that found her hilariously stupid?).

That's why I liked it...Finnick is just so great...and because of the one scene where Katniss and Peeta are running to eachother and they fall cuz of his leg. I love that.

I haven't read the books, but I do HATE how much attention its getting, while series like Leviathan and Mortal Engines don't get clart. Yes, the series is interseting, but surely its not THAT interesting!

I have this nagging feeling that ME did really well in 2001 and A Darkling Plain in 2006.. I don't know why... but I really think so... Were you there where ME was 1st released? I was like 4 years old so I would have no way of finding out...

No, I never heard anything about the series. Didn't know it existed at all until I stole the first book from my health class's shelf.

Ah... I do own alot of other books that Phillip illustrated though... Horrible histories, murderous maths ETC... Bought in 2007... I can't remember if I ever saw ME in stores, cause they sure can't be found now.

Not exactly. The Murdurous maths are really common. Illustrated by him. Semi-legit.  ;D I own afew.

Ehh the stuff in there are way below your level. If you read it, you would just go like "You don't say" the whole time.  ;D Still cool to see the illustrations though.

What, the overhypedness? Thats the only thing I don't really like. The story itself is good. ITs nice to see a young adult story that isn't afraid to kill people.
Title: Re: Am i the only one who hates HG?
Post by: Polandeer on July 17, 2012, 12:32:45 PM
I think so but it's also not nice when the author thinks, "Hm. I have not killed enough people yet. Maybe in the last book I should kill off half the characters. Eh. That's not enough. How about two thirds?" I've had that in 'The Death Cure' and 'Mockingjay'
Title: Re: Am i the only one who hates HG?
Post by: Straif on July 17, 2012, 12:34:03 PM
That happens in A Darkling Plain too. NO ONE is safe in that one. Probably not as much as in Mockingjay if what you say is anything to go by.

Killing characters? That screams Homestuck. All of the characters save a hand's full have died, at least once.

Post by: Polandeer on July 17, 2012, 12:38:18 PM
Yeah, that was true in A Darkling Plain but... that one was people dying for real... like old age.
Title: Re: Am i the only one who hates HG?
Post by: Straif on July 17, 2012, 12:39:20 PM
Yeah, but in there they can COME BACK...or something like that. I dunno. I've never really looked into that series.
And in a Darkling Plain? You kidding? Only a couple people die from that. The rest get shot, blown up, die of heart problems, commit suicide, get SPACE LASERED, or and sworded.

I thought this was about H.G. Wells for a second. That would not have been pretty.

Anyway, I think the Hunger Games is just too overblown. It's an average series that just has too much hype and popularity around it. Having a huge fanbase can ruin just about anything.

I'm willing to give it a shot, but Battle Royale is higher on my "want to read" list. If I do read it, I'll write up a summary of my complaints about the novel.

BATTLE ROYALE IS SO MUCH BETTER!!!!@Straif YES IT'S A BOOK!!!! Allie and I seem to be the only 2 people on here who have read it and we both agree it's way better. It's everything THG is and more. THG is like a toned down BR, with mostly racially ambiguous characters and romance. There is some romance in BR but it isn't one focused relationship, and it's almost always messed up(so and so likes ... who likes . . .) but it's not a big part of the books, it just fills out their character.(since they are all middle school kids/maybe 9th grade, the Japanese/Chinese school systems are worked differently, it's natural for them all to have friends they are looking for and crushes to find and protect and enemies to watch out for)

THEN I MUST FUCKING READ IT! I can already tell it'll be better than HG. The only thing that would make it even more awesome? Give one of the girls a Lancer assualt rilfe from Gears of War. Fucking chainsaw bayonete people.

The biggest question I have is still : Was it originally written in English?   ???  ;D

No, it was written in Japanese and later translated into English. Same with the film.

I thought this was about H.G. Wells for a second. That would not have been pretty.

Ah, okay. Well, alot of stories share the same idea... just that it's told differently... Like... Mortal Engines and Worldshaker... and.... (I have not been reading alot lately)... you get my point. I don't think THG is bad as a book. Maybe just over hyped.

Well then again I never understood why people liked stuff like Arthemist Fowl, The Kane chronicles or Percy Jackson either...

You know what I don‘t understand? When people say that The Hunger Games is ‘overhyped‘. Those people and I have seriously different definitions of the term. To me, overhyped is something like the Twilight craze:

- Everybody knows what the series is, even if they haven‘t read it or watched the movie
- A huge ammount of merchandizing: posters, apparel, toys, jewellery, gift bags, cards, board games, candy, and so on...
- It‘s constantly being mentioned on other tv programs and in magazines

As for The Hunger Games? Well, there is merchandise, but only in certain stores and only basic items such as posters and shirts. It‘s hardly mentioned on tv, even on those ‘entertaintment‘ shows, and the number of people I know who have absolutely NO IDEA what the series is is pretty damn high. So yeah, overhyped? I don‘t think so.

But anyway, I do like the first book in the series (not so much the other two), but I don‘t think they‘re the best books ever.

I personally blame the film for all of this. I was only barely aware of THG through friends prior to the film's announcement. Afterwards it was everywhere. My school had posters of the characters taking up half a wall for pete's sake.

The controversy over whether or not it ripped off Battle Royale certainly didn't help either.

I don't think it ripped off BR, but I could see why people would think it did. I even made a topic right after reading BR outlining all the creepy similarities which could proof it ripped it off. Link: http://scottwesterfeld.com/forum/index.php?topic=8887.msg1141008#msg1141008

Same, actually. I was kinda, sorta, maybe thinking about getting into it when I ran out of other books to read, but now...well, lets just say I try to be a fan of things that no one else is. I don't follow a crowd. Now, I'm trying to decide if I should get into HG because its become so popular. I had the same trouble with His Dark Materials (I didn't read it before the movie came out I admit it), but then all the hype died to nothing after the movie crashed and burned, so now I feel fine again.

I liked His Dark Materials. I didn't read the books until the movie was in the works though, but I did read the book before the movie came out. I thought the movie did an ok job other than the ending which was messed up. I have the whole trilogy in an omnibus. I loved the second book and Will(he was awesome) but the third book was weird and the way it ended was tragic(like Shakespearean). Pullman tried to age his kid characters WAY too quickly. It would have been better to just start them out a bit older.

There's merchandise everywhere. Toys r us, Walmart, hot topic, fye, rue21, and it's not just posters. There's cardboard cut outs, lunch boxes, bags, barbies, trading cards, clothes, wallets, and so much more. I would know because I was looking at everything. cx

I think it's overhyped in some ways, but then again, most YA books that are made into movies ARE overhyped. Just watch when City of Bones comes out. There will be stuff EVERYWHERE. Hell, they'll probably start making temporary tattoos of runes (which would be AWESOME). I don't find overhyped-ness to be a problem, considering MANY things are.

Well... In certain cases something being overhyped is a good thing... In the case of transformers... I only knew it because of the 2007 Movie... It has been around from 1984 up till that time of 2007, and I had barely any interest in it... Then yeah. The movie, and kids in my school were all talking about it and I got to know it... Sometimes, I question if it was a GOOD thing... considering how  I spent probably close to $5000 on it already... haha

In the case of books... Well I'm not too sure... IMO I consider this state of THG to be overhyped. Twillight? It's so bad no one talks about it anymore. That's why I fear stuff like Mortal Engines and Leviathan being made into a movie... On one hand I get  to watch an awesome movie... on the other hand, the entire series becomes mainstream.  :'(

Not exactly a good thing I agree. Though it didn't happen with The Golden Compass. Maybe we'll get lucky again, and have a good movie that won't cause a over-hype reaction.

That's because the movie wasn't all that great. A Peter Jackson directed ME would become really big and extremely overhyped.  Same with a really good Leviathan movie. Especially since there's a love story in Leviathan that can easily be marketed to young girls. That's one of the problems I have with THG. The romance is clearly the main selling point in the film.

As is the case with a lot of Young Adult series...most of them have them. Airborn? Matt and Kate. Leviathan? Alek and Deryn. Percy Jackson? Percy and Annabeth. Worldshaker? Col and Riff. Twilight...not gonna say anything.
Thats actually part of why I like ME. There's romance, yes...but it's mostly drowned out by giant cites. And it's not a picture perfect one neither. Bella Swann has no reason to gripe. Hester Shaw...not gonna say anything. Nothing to say.

the only time I havn't minded: HArry Potter. but that's probably because when its hype started...we were all too young to understand hype....that and...hype probably didn't exist then (well...it did but it wasn't a problem because we were not annoying teenage hipsters)

I guess it must just be where I am that nobody gives a flying fark about The Hunger Games. But yeah, over-hyping isn‘t something to your knickers in a twist over, and I don‘t think it‘s a valid reason to dislike something. Hispters, bloody hipsters everywhere...

What's wrong with it is because it's become the synonymous for any video game. If you talk about playing video games people automatically think you mean a shooter like COD and multiplayer, and it's making multiplayer spread through games like the plague(even on games that have no reason to have multiplayer). And half the people who play it then consider themselves "gamers" even though it's the only game they've played and the don't even really play it but want to have it so they can tell everyone they have it. It's crap like that that makes me hate Xbox 360 and Xbox live as well. Half the time people don't really use it but they want people to know they have it and people automatically thinking if you talk about gaming you must have a 360 and Live.*end rant*

Don't get me started on mobile "gaming". I cannot believe the sheer number of idiots who consider themselves gamers when all they play are stupid iphone games, and the people who think mobile "gaming" is going to cause consoles to go the way of VHS and Laser Disks. People who don't know what RPG's or RTS's are and think Farmville is real gaming. It doesn't help when console manufacturers shoot themselves in the foot with broken motion control while publishers try to squeeze every last dollar out of gamers with on-disk content unlocked through pricey DLC.

I was just about to put something like what you said Traction, thanks for saving me the time. Oh and then don't forget after they release all the DLC they want to put out they put out the SAME game except with all the DLC and call it Game of the Year Edition regardless of whether it's been named that by any reviewer or whether it's been released for a year or not. Basically it's the "The way we should have released the game" edition.

The only game I like/play is Minecraft, and that's only because I play it with all my friends on Liam's server. Playing it alone is stupid, but playing it with Ian, Liam, Bejamin, Vanessa, and Christian is fun. I also LOVE arcade games, like pacman and cruising world, but that's because I was raised around them. Other than that I really don't like video games, and to me they are a waste of time. But that's just my opinion. :p

I don't mind the practice of releasing GotY and "Ultimate" Editions of games so long as the extra content consists of add-ons rather than unlockable content that was on the original disk. The only publisher who I know of that releases a GotYE that is basically a "how it should have been" Edition is Capcom. Beth is very good about their GotYE's and DLC practices in general and Activision has the decency to have actual add-ons (however overpriced they may be).

I love Minecraft. I've had it since Beta 1.2 on my PC. I play more on the Xbox version right now, tho, while I wait for mods to update to 1.3.
