“She’s a big power, well her father is a big power. Rich industrialist or whatever I heard. Jimmy is needed for his persuasiveness, and for his vast contacts in America. Together, they have immeasurable power.” Caleb explained, he leaned to get a pebble. “As much they’re helping with the war, they’re being watched.”

"What do you mean they're being watched?" Riley frowned.

Caleb shook his head, his hand smoothening over the pebble. “It’s mostly hearsay...”

"But, what are they being watched for?" Riley frowned more and knelt down closer to Caleb.

“Tactics... their ways of extracting information from prisoners of war... it’s not exactly sanctioned.” Caleb clenched his teeth together, he was placed in the bunker with the generals who seemed to know more than they should, said things they should’ve kept quiet, Caleb shivered at the thought back in the bunker.

"Wait...Jimmy's doing that?" Riley asked, her eyes widening a bit. "I didn't...I thought he was only doing business things with her, I didn't think it had to do with the war. What's he doing?"

“Oh it is seen as business, Jimmy knew... or knows how to get the information out. Physiologically, emotionally, physically out of the enemies. I know what he’s doing in Scotland, brainwashing allied soldiers how to do his job for him. Training them how to... do such deplorable acts.” Caleb cleared his throat looking around them.

Riley swallowed, feeling sick as she listened. "He's always been good at ruining people," she said softly, looking out at the lake.

“In exchange after the war everything that was on him, will be wiped. Every illegal act will be wiped of the face of the earth.” Caleb remembered visiting the offices in London, the files he read, the stories he was told made his blood run cold. “He’s basically her bitch until the war is over.”

Riley's lips set into a thin line as her jaw tightened. "He's supposed to come home soon. He...he loves Aisling so much, and I think he really loves me too but I...Caleb, I don't know what to do anymore."

“Do you believe an old dog can learn new tricks?” Caleb asked looking up at her. “You’re marrying a wild spirit, you know you can’t tame him.”

"He wants to change, though. I thought he did," Riley could feel tears pricking the back of her eyes, but she refused to cry about this.

“I can’t say that he has. But you know him more than anyone else here.” Caleb finally threw his pebble and winced, he massaged his rib cage and smiled. “He has a dangerous past, but I can find a way to forget about it. If you choose a life with him...”

Riley looked up at Caleb and then smiled, taking his hand in one of hers. "Thank you. That means...a lot to me, Caleb. Thank you."
