I have certainly noticed that. But not in Leviathan! Deryn's taller than Alek :)

And also skinny as a rail too...hence why she can pass as a boy.
And once again I can bring attention to Mortal Engines, where Hester Shaw is not "petite' in any term of the word...other than what's caused by starvation.

You don't notice it much in scotts books :)

I mean, out of tally and shay-it's shay that is scrawny :P and when they are Specials...I wouldn't call them petite....tally would probably kill you if you tried :P

Most of the girls in PJO are solid (Clarries LaRue anyone? Combat boots, giant spear...)

Ha, true. Riordan hasn't followed that pattern at all, really.

Interesting article. I agree with you guys's counter-examples and would like to add Keladry from the Protector of the Small series. 5'10" and "broad-shouldered", she could never be seen as petite.

I honestly didn't notice that before. It's interesting, though the author makes it sound like much worse of a problem than it is, in my opinion.

To contribute to counter-examples: Risa Ward from the Unwind series. She's had to fight to survive most of her life, and although she isn't petite, she's not buff either--which is why she relies on her intelligence to survive, rather than strength she doesn't have.

Other counter examples...
Pretty much every female Spartan from the Halo series. None of them even TOE petite.

Beka Cooper is 5.8, has square shoulders and a good long set of running legs on her, so not exactly petite.
