Technically it wasn't reccommended to me by a friend, I had to snatch it out of her hand because she didn't want to tell me what she was reading.

It was reccomended to me by a friend who hadn't read it because it was by Scott Westerfeld (and she still hasn't read all four books ::)).

I found it randomly because I had nothing else to read, and kept reading because I was vainly hoping that there's be at least ONE scene with Specials being torn apart by something even WORSE than them (like...some kind of cybernetic supersoldier.)
No such luck..but I liked it anyway.

the first book was okay, I didn't read the whole series. I liked the world building but I don't like that it lacked good character development.

It's not my favorite of the author's works.

I tried it after reading Leviathan, didn't care for it, waited a few years, read all of Scott's other YA books, read Bogus to Bubbly, read Extras, then FINALLY returned to Uglies. What can I say, I can be a little roundabout.
