Update: Instead of Terrestrial and Celestial martial arts they have Girlfriend and Fiance level marital arts.
My new favorite piece of literature is this little slice of the mass combat section, aka the rules for battles between armies.

"In Exalted: Kawaii, mass combat resembles the gang fight from West Side Story. It is a giant song and dance number with two armies manuevering in synchronized dance manuevers, in order to basically make the other side realize it is less cute and force them to run for their lives in shame. Death is minimal unless one side gets stubborn or is particularly blood thirsty.
Military units basically act as the chorus line for their unit commander and most of the actual fighting, except with particularly blood-thirsty foes, comes down to a duel between unit commanders with the units acting as moral support / psychological intimidation / stunt fodder / entertainment for the dueling leaders."


I can't describe my emotions towards this fandom. I have never been more shamed and more hysterically giggly towards a group of people since Kung Fury.

"Karaoke : Very popular in the Kawaii Isle, especially with magical girls. The needed equipment is a level 1 artifact in its simplest form; Karaoke facilities can be found in any Blessed Isle city of 10,000 or more. Very large cities have many competing ones. In the Threshold, such facilities are found usually only in major noble homes and in major cities,"

This is canon now.

International Drug Trafficking is dominated by La Cosa Nostradamus, run by a circle of renegade Helping Goddesses. They use their prophetic powers to figure out how the demand and supply of drugs will change, then move in and take over the key players, replacing them by the use of Disguises, if necessary.
They utilize a race of giant sentient, semi-humanoid pitchers of liquid to produce their drugs. These giant armed and limbed pitchers (with faces drawn in black on one side of the pitcher) constantly produce various drugs in liquid form and are constantly being slowly drained off and allowed to solidify into everything from alcohol to crack cocaine to pogs. One such pitcher, however, escaped many years ago and fights a lonely guerilla war against La Cosa Nostradamus. It is unclear whether or not Kool-Aid Man will ever liberate his brethren.
Of late, La Cosa Nostradamus has been experimenting with addictive dinosaurs, to break into the kiddy market, since kids love Dinosaurs. However, repeated maimings of test children and testers alike by the test models have made progress slow.


This is the only game you'll ever need to play.

Bratwurst Academy (The Pyramid)

Located on an island on the lonely northern coast of the Blessed Isle, this giant four-sided pyramid is the premiere magical academy of the Isle, where people go to learn sorcery and to engage in intense study of charms. Most of the Island's sorcerors gained their skills by studying here.
Students are divided into five 'Houses', which compete against each other for points; whichever house has the most points at the end of the year is rewarded with special sorcerous knowledge and artifacts and CANDY. Whoever gets the least will be mocked for all of eternity. The Houses are:
Manticore: Self-righteous snots who think they are braver and more moral than everyone else.
Sniveling: Arrogant whiners who think their bloodlines are the purest and everyone else should just give it up. They especially look down on anyone who comes of mixed heritage, or worse, was born into a mortal family. Or isn't fantastically wealthy. Or has bad hair. Or doesn't wear the latest fashion. Or...
Kawaii: Obsessed with their own beauty, house Kawaii's members are in this to become EVEN PRETTIER THAN BEFORE. They reject all ugly things, like homework.
Elephant: They say an Elephant never forgets. Nor will he let you forget he never forgets anything and is SMARTER THAN YOU WILL EVER BE. Ever.
Puff'n'Stuff: This is the house where the uncool kids get put, the hard workers who will actually keep the Empire alive while the other four houses are busy getting themselves off on how great they are. Most quickly learn to keep their heads down until they graduate and get out of this asylum. House Puff'n'Stuff is also noted for its yearly 'Giant Demonic Puppet Festival', which involves creating huge marionettes controlled by demons, who then perform skits.


My sides ruptured at "Puff'n'Stuff" and were left in ruins at "who then perform skits".

Just wanted to pop in and say that 1) Kawaii!Exalted is a work of art and 2) I was configuring my printer and the manual repeated the phrase "the LANs" (local area networks) and I thought of Lanying and Lanfen ::)

aNYWAY. After a crazy stupid long hiatus imma post the next Thing Lanying Knows.
So, last time I explained house Ledaal in all their geeky glory.

But Ledaal has enemies and allies among the other great houses. Today, we're going to take a look at their closest ally; the fire aspected house Cathak.


House Cathak



Famed as one of the most militaristic of the Great Houses, House Cathak has been blessed by the Dragons with a better Exaltation rate than any House but Mnemonís. Even more auspiciously, House Cathak has produced more children than any other Great House for 80 out of the last 100 years. For other Great Houses, this would be a blessing.
For House Cathak, itís necessary to offset the Houseís equally high mortality rate. The majority of young Cathaks (Exalted or not) enter the legions, where they strive to equal or surpass the legends of the Houseís great war heroesóand the Houseís casualty rate reflects that. More tragedies befall the young soldiers of this Great House than any other. Publicly, this is attributed to the fearlessness of House Cathak. Privately, it is often claimed that, while members of the House are long on bravery, theyíre short on judgment. Some members even secretly claim that itís an extravagant conspiracy engineered by Mnemon to keep House Cathak from taking control of the Dynasty simply by out-breeding the rest of the Great Houses.

Due to their shared devotion to the Wyld Hunt and largely aligned goals, the Cathak and Ledaal houses have enjoyed a strong, and mutually beneficial relationship for centuries. House Cathak is the intimidating big brother of house Ledaal, and to help cement this bond, marriages between the houses are commonly arranged, or at least strongly encouraged by both houses.*


Master of the House:

Great grandson of Cathak himself, Cathak Cainan is the current patriarch of House Cathak and a true icon of the Scarlet Empire. Cainan is one of those rare, truly pious souls who obtained his schooling at the Cloister of Wisdom and then chose to be a soldier rather than a holy man.
Over a glorious career that has included leadership of the Cathak legions, massive battles with invading Fair Folk and vigorous participation in the Wyld Hunt, Cathak Cainan has earned the respect of his family and the obedience of the legions. He is one f a handful of Exalts in the Realm who can get an audience with the Mouth of Peace [Basically the Pope] within an hour of requesting one.
Like his House, Cainan has proven himself unusually fecund, and a surprisingly high percentage of his children and grandchildren have Exalted.
Though he does not consider himself his Houseís ruler, per-se, Cainan does guide his extensive family with a firm, but gentle hand. Heís open to the input of other family members, but no one questions that his word is final.


MAJOR LINES

THE CATHAK GAREL HOUSEHOLD

Cathak Garel is a respected military historian whose household is based in a sprawling manse outside Tuchara, in Arjuf Dominion.

She and her family are renowned for writing the most accurate and complete histories of the Scarlet Empireís conquests and battles anywhere in the Realm. Gathered both through battlefield observation and exhaustive interviews, these histories read like hyper-detailed and thoroughly annotated skirmish-by-skirmish accounts. They are so accurate that they are considered sensitive information and guarded accordingly. Any time the Realm enters a conflict, chroniclers from the Cathak Garel household appear on or near the field of battle as dependably as hungry crows. On many occasions, the family has earned the ire of other Houses and households by being too honest in its histories, but Garel has always insisted that accurate records of battles are far more crucial to the Realm than flattering ones. If any member of the Cathak Garel household were ever to falsify a chronicle of a battle, both Garel and Cainan himself would be forced to take drastic action to defend the integrity of the householdís reputation.

While many in Cathak Garelís line have followed her example and become historians, many have also made more active use of these historical lessons by becoming strategists and generals in the legions.

A daiklave [meaning, "Huge, magical sword"] is a huge, magical sword. *Mengyao's mother is a fire aspect from house Cathak who was married into Ledaal.

Well they CAN be a little Fire Nationy. They have many satrapies in the Threshold, and thatís where the vast portion of the Houseís funds come from. Cathak Cainan has a reputation for squeezing the Houseís satrapies harder than most of the Dynastic Houses, but also for providing more disciplined troops, less corrupt officers and a range of other services (road and bridge building, mostly).
Ledaal on the other hand usually prefer to give clear, simple demands to their satrapies, not interfering unless someone messes up, at which point they make a decisive and memorable point about why you should not piss off a house full of ninja and sorcerers.
It IS a badass sword.

HOUSE NELLENS

Being a Dragon-Blood in House Nellens is a mixed blessing. On one hand, such individuals are beloved because they are automatic celebrities in their House. On the other hand, House Nellens has thrown its lot in with patricians and the un-Exalted, and despite being Princes of the Earth, Exalted can wind up feeling like second-class members of the House. The ambiguity of such status can anger Nellens Dragon-Blooded, and some of them have even left their House in disgust. Most, however, accept their awkward status gracefully and take pride in the advantages enjoyed by the Dragon-Blooded that others in their House will never know. Some even become advocates for the rights of the un-Exalted, although doing so borders on heresy in the eyes of the Immaculate Order.


MASTER(S) OF THE HOUSE

House Nellens is guided by a council comprising its four oldest patricians and three oldest Dragon-Blooded [Who everyone assumes are the real decision-makers.]

MAJOR LINES

Nellens is at a disadvantage in almost every way conceivable when dealing with the other Dynastic Houses, and members of the House consider it very important to project a unifi ed front. For that reason, all members of House Nellens use the Nellens name, and thereís strong pressure not to weaken the House by breaking into separate households. Most of the family lives in an enormous manse in the city of Juche, at the base of the Imperial Mountain.

The House founder was the only mortal with whom the Empress ever condescended to share her superlative breeding.* She must have felt very strongly for him because even after his death, the Empress did not take steps against his bloodline.** Nellens is largely a mortal House, seeing only a small fraction of the Exaltations of any of the other Great Houses. The most Exaltations ever recorded by scions of Nellens is precisely 10 in a single year. The House leadership has taken great efforts to improve its Exaltation rate, including strategic weddings and adoptions, and their efforts appear to be gradually paying off. Still, more Exalted blood comes into the House every year, and at some point in the distant future, Nellens might be blessed with an Exaltation rate similar to the other Houses. All the House has to do is survive that long.

The Exalted of House Nellens favor no elemental aspect over any other. This is exactly the lack of elemental focus that other Houses mock (and fear, and guard against), though such a burden is expected of a House as misbegotten as Nellens. As a result of this sorry state of affairs, characters born into House Nellens suffer a +1 external penalty to social interactions with Dynasts from other Houses.


ECONOMICS

With the Dragon-Blooded taking the lionís share of the more lucrative and glamorous business opportunities, House Nellens has learned to manage very well on smaller industries overlooked by the Houses with more Exalted. It has diversifi ed into farming communities, fi sheries, whaling expeditions, silk production, small textile operations, minor shipping and trade routes and so on.

While none of these modest endeavors makes Nellens immensely wealthy, they all add up. They also see to it that Nellens is surprisingly well connected among the un-Exalted, a level of society that many Dragon-Blooded completely ignore. All of these factors help to make Nellens one of the very few Houses whose income is still growing, despite the economic hardship that has fallen on many of the other Houses.

Nellens controls only a handful of satrapies, but it is not unhappy with this state of affairs. Truthfully, House Nellens just isnít organized to deal with large shipments of tribute. Accordingly, instead of collecting tribute directly from those satrapies it does manage, Nellens often makes complex three- or four- party deals instead. These deals result in the Houseís satraps shipping goods to distant third parties who happen to be allies of the House. These allies then do other favors for House Nellens or provide the House with raw goods and services of every description. Itís a complex maze of connections and trade that leaves Nellens not only in possession of more goods for less effort, but also helps keep its tributaries and satraps happy.

The smaller trades and shipments are not only cheaper, but easier to protect. These arrangements even served to hide some of the Houseís income from the Empress, and Nellens elders are certain they will have even more success concealing their transactions from whomever ascends to the Scarlet Throne next.

Nellens also goes out of its way to ally itself with tributaries that are feeling squeezed by other the Houses. It has secretly underwritten a handful of tribute payments to other Houses in return for goods and favors of various sorts, most notably information and artifacts from the First Age.


GOALS AND ALLIANCES

Because of its perceived fondness for the un-Exalted, House Nellens has powerful strategic sway over mortals on the Blessed Isle, including most patrician families and the businesses they control.

The un-Exalted see House Nellens as their one window onto the Dynastic world. Even with its poor breeding rate, the House has far greater access to the resources of the Blessed Isle than even a mortal from another Dynastic House.

Itís a well-known fact among the mortals of the Blessed Isle that the Dragon-Blooded take care of their own and screw over the un-Exalted at every opportunity. Patricians and other mortals, however, quietly do what they can to take care of House Nellens, which, in terms of sheer numbers, is easily the most popular House on the Blessed Isle, regardless of what Dynastic propaganda might claim.

Although they have to be incredibly discreet about doing so, members of House Nellens regularly make inroads into the other Great Houses by wooing the many un-Exalted (and resentful) members of those Houses. Those patricians who feel as though they have been screwed over by the Dragon-Blooded at some pointóand most doósupport House Nellens in whatever subtle, discreet ways they are able.

Consequently, House Nellens often gets better prices for important goods and services from mortal families than other Great Houses do, and it has contacts everywhere. Some other Houses have almost been forced to assume that anyone who isnít Exalted is either a member or a supporter of House Nellens.

Nellens has learned to expect nothing from the other Houses, and it certainly wonít count on them to defend its right to exist now that the Empress is gone. Nearly every member of House Nellens desperately wants their House to take the throne or to have a solid grasp on the individual who does wind up sitting on it. Any other outcome puts Nellensí future viability as a Dynastic House in serious jeopardy.

GRAND DAIKLAVE



A Grand Daiklave is what most people think of when you mention daiklaves, or Exalted for that matter, and was one of the first things that I saw online to draw me in. Sometimes called a battlefield blade or foecutter, the grand daiklave is the ultimate expression of the philosophy behind the daiklave- one needs no defense against a dead opponent. Two handed weapons with blades six-feet long, over a foot wide, it is the only lightening effects of Essence that allow these weapons to be wielded at all.

ON THE SUBJECT OF GETTING SWOLE

Right, so, one of the goofier things about Exalted is the feats of strength table, which is supposed to represent what a character of a given Strength+Athletics score is capable of lifting/doing, buuuuuut it's a little goofy in how it works. Take a look.



Yeah, cause an average person can TOTALLY lift a mule.
Uhuh.
Legit.
So I made my own version that I think is slightly less crazy while also allowing you to do objectively impossible stuff at higher levels.

1: 40 pounds: Carry an sack of seed without dashing. Drag a suit of armour without dashing. Wear a sword. Climb a tree at [Dexterity] yards per two ticks.
2: 80 pounds: Carry a sack of seed on each shoulder without Dashing. Carry a suit of heavy armor. Swim against a current at [Dex/Str] yards per two ticks.
3: 120 pounds: Dash with a sack of seed on each shoulder. Move normally in heavy armour. Climb a tree at [Dexterity] yards per tick.
4: 150 pounds: Carry an average sized person over each shoulder at half speed. Dash in heavy armour. Climb/Swim at normal speed. Swim against a current at [Dex/Str] yards per tick.
5: 200 pounds: Carry a large anvil. Catch an average sized person. Carry a person twice your weight. Break a solid plank with a kick.
6: 300 pounds: Kick a wooden door down. Move one Dash action along a vertical surface. Reduce fall damage by [Athletics] bashing on a successful Strength+Athletics roll.
7: 500 pounds: Bend a bronze bar under an inch thick. Break through wood [Strength/Athletics] inches thick in [Strength/Athletics] blows. Throw an anvil [Str+Ath] yards.
8: 650 pounds: Shatter a lock with a kick. Break rope bindings. Swim at Dash speed against a current. Swim at [Dex/Str] yards against stormy waters per two ticks.
9: 800 pounds: Bend an iron bar under an inch thick. Pull a fully laden wagon at [Str/Ath] yards per tick. Throw an anvil [FOSX2] yards for 4+Str bashing damage. Carry a mule.
10: 1000 pounds : Swim against stormy waters at Dash speed for [Strength/Athletics] ticks, moving at normal speed for one tick per tick dashed afterwards. Climb a tree or wall at Dash speed. Break through stone [Strength/Athletics] inches thick in [Strength/Athletics] blows. Throw a mule, or small shark FOS yards for 6+Str bashing [lethal, if you manage to hit them with the bitey bit of the shark] damage. Drag a fully loaded cart at Dashing speed. Attempt to grapple an opponent twice your height and width. Reduce fall damage by [FOS] on a successful Strength+Athletics roll.
11: 1250 pounds: Throw an anvil [FOSXEssence] yards. Dash with a full wine barrel on each shoulder. Shatter iron manacles. Lift an unlocked portcullis.
12: 1500 pounds: Uproot or knock over a tree [Strength/Athletics] yards tall over [Strength/Athletics] turns and carry it. Carry [Strength/Athletics] people your size at normal speed.
13: 2000 pounds: Breach an iron plated and barred door with a blow. Break a hole in a brick wall [Strength/Athletics] bricks thick over [Strength/Athletics] blows. Carry a horse. Throw a horse, bear or shark Strength+AthleticsX2 yards for 6 bashing damage. Use a tree [Strength/Athletics] yards tall as a weapon.
14: 2500 pounds: Move a hippopotamus. Attempt to grapple an opponent [EssenceX] your size. Catch a drawbridge. Break through bronze [Strength/Athletics] thick over [Strength/Athletics] blows.
15: 3500 pounds: Lift and carry a small hippopotamus at [Str/Ath] yards per turn. Force everyone around you weighing under half your FOS limit within [Strength] yards to roll against knockdown at a difficulty of your [Strength/Athletics]. Roll Strength+Athletics and Dash [FOS] yards for one tick per success. Roll Strength+Athletics and Dash up a vertical surface for one tick per success. Shake the ground hard enough to wake sleeping mortals and rattle windowpanes for [FOS] yards around you in every direction when you jump, land or Dash. Leave footprints in solid brick.
16: 5000 pounds: Carry a tonne of metal or stone on each shoulder at walking speed. Throw a hippopotamus [FOS] yards for 10+Str bashing damage. Throw an anvil [FOSXEssenceX2] yards. Throw a dead horse, bear or large shark [FOSXEssence] yards. Carry a pair of horses. Uproot or topple a tree FOS yards tall over [FOS] turns and drag it.
17: 6500 pounds: Create a strong wind or a current [Strength/Athletics] yards wide and [FOS] yards long for [Strength] ticks by punching or kicking after preparing for [Strength/Athletics] ticks. Make a hole a yard wide and two deep in solid earth [half that for stone] with a single blow. Carry a small forest elephant at a rate of Strength yards per turn.
18: 8000 pounds. Create a crater [Str] yards wide and deep in loose dirt [or half that for stone] with a single blow. Lift a small Orca and carry it back into the sea, gently and lovingly at a rate of either Strength or Compassion yards per turn. Double your jumping distance with FOS ticks of preparation. Carry a small forest elephant at normal speed.
19: 9000 pounds. Cause the earth to shake within [FOSXEssence] yards around by falling, Dashing, jumping or striking the ground. Rip a safe open with your bare hands. 20: 10,000 pounds. Throw a small forest elephant up to FOS yards for 15+Strength bashing damage. Topple a bush elephant with a push. Besides that pretty much do whatever you want, throw an orca at someone, just don't hurt me.

Now, Lanying currently has 4 Strength and 3 Athletics, putting her at 7 on this chart. If she stunts, she can increase this by 2 [3 technically but that almost never happens] meaning that she can lift, on average, about 800 pounds.
However.
There is a means.
For her to exceed that.

Fun fact though, most cavalry in the Realm's armies isn't stationed in the Realm! Since the Blessed Isle is, well, an island, it's seperated from anywhere it might want to conquer by ocean. So rather than transport hundreds of horses by ship whenever they want to invade somewhere they just train cavalry detachments in their satrapies and ride them to wherever they need them. The exception are the Exalted [as usual] who often have literally spiritual bonds with their horses, tigers, elephants or whatever else they ride. Plus, a Dragon Blooded with a mount is a Dragon Blooded who can ride away from the main force before busting out the elemental kung-fu that could maim or kill their own soldiers, there are charms to prevent that but not all DBs learn them.
