D*D
« on: October 30, 2016, 09:53:59 PM »

Howdy y'all!
So a few of you know that I've been planning on starting a forum game of D&D some time soon.
This is not that game.
YET.
First off I'm gonna run a quick choose your own adventure style tutorial so anyone who wants to get an idea of how it works, can. Interested? Just post a vote for the next decision! Get bored? Stop posting! It's super open and you're welcome to just give it a try.

The first Dungeons & Dragons game was played back when Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson chose to personalize the massive battles of their fantasy wargames with the exploits of individual heroes.
This inspiration became the first fantasy roleplaying game, in which players are characters in an ongoing fantasy story.
We owe the entire Role Playing section of this forum to Gygax and Arneson.
This new kind of game has become immensely popular over the years, and D&D has grown to include many new ways to vividly experience worlds of heroic fantasy.
The core of D&D is storytelling. You and your friends tell a story together, guiding your heroes through quests for treasure, battles with deadly foes, daring rescues, courtly intrigue, and much more.
You can also explore the world of Dungeons & Dragons through any of the novels written by its fantasy authors, as well as engaging board games and immersive video games. All of these stories are part of D&D.
[Also no, before you ask, it isn't satanic]

But how do you play it?
Basically like any roleplay, except you don't know for sure what's going to happen.
In a normal RP the only thing keeping your character alive is honor agreements against powerplaying, in D&D you have hit points that measure your health, dice to keep things interesting and abilities that determine just how skilled or otherwise you are at various things.
These abilities are determined by your level, your race and your character class.
So let's start by choosing them for a new character.
You start at Level 1, so that parts out of the way.
But what about your race? What species does this character come from? What's their background? What's their career?
You decide.
Let's start with race, pick an option from below, Most races have subraces that alter their stats further, but they can be picked later. Feel free to ask for details if you want them.

Dragonborn: Draconic humanoids with scaly skin and breath weapons ranging from fire to acid. You receive +2 Strength, +1 Charisma.

Dwarf: Short, usually bearded, noisy, gruff, brave, loyal, drunk, dwarves are all this and more. Your Constitution score increases by 2.

Elf: Elves are an ancient, fey race, not entirely of this world. They live for centuries, worship strange Gods and practice srange magic. Your Dexterity score increases by 2.

Gnome: Gnomes are a diminutive race of fiercely intelligent innovators and engineers. They use brilliant illusions and cunning traps to keep their shallow halls safe from intruders. Your Intelligence score increases by 2.

Half-Elf: Half-Elves are the children of elves with mortals. They usually have difficulty integrating fully in either world, being too long lived to feel comfortable around most mortals, but too impatient and flighty for elves. Because of this they tend to possess an odd assortment of talents. You get +2 to Charisma, and two +1s in any two other stats.

Half-Orc: A half-orc is exactly what it says on the tin - a fusion of human and orc. Usually they're the product of pariahs among both species. However some places actually have full on half-orc populations, where man and orc have so thoroughly interbred that everyone's at least a little bit half-orc. Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Halfling: Halflings, or simply "'flings", are generally small, well-spirited people. Halflings can be found everywhere from human cities or gypsy caravans to their own small enclaves known as "moots". Your Dexterity score increases by 2.

Human: You know what a human is. Don't play that game. Your Ability Scores each increase by 1.

Tiefling: Tieflings are mortals whose lineage is tainted by the blood or essence of a fiend - demon, devil, daemon, whatever - at some remote point in their ancestry. Not an actual fiend's kid, mind, but one of their descendants. Basically, if a humanoid half-fiend has a kid, it'll probably be a tiefling, and after that the fiendish blood can also skip a few generations. Sometimes, it naturally occurs due to fiendish pacts, either in the pactee or their descendants. Your Intelligence score increases by 1, and your Charisma score increases by 2.

Could I even be anymore anthronormative? Smh

You've selected Dragonborn!

A highly self-sufficient and clannish race literally born of dragons, in that they were created from dragon eggs either by the draconic gods Bahamut [God of good and metallic dragons] and Tiamat [Goddess of evil and chromatic dragons] themselves or by powerful dragons. Some still serve as faithful servants, especially as soldiers, but many more are now without a purpose and try to find a reason for their existence.
First generation dragonborn more strongly resembled their ancestors, especially in terms of scale color, but generations of interbreeding have created a more unified appearance, with common scale colors being brass, bronze, scarlet, rust, gold, or copper-green. Strongly blooded individuals, whose coloration (and sometimes appearance) again calls to mind their Chromatic or Metallic ancestors, do occasionally appear and are considered marked by destiny.

First of all, let's pick your color. For humans color has almost no bearing on a persons abilities beyond how easily they sunburn, but for dragons, coloration signifies the nature of their ancestral powers.
Your color can be any of the ones from the list below.

Dragon---Breath Weapon
Black   Acid
Blue           Lightning
Brass   Fire
Bronze   Lightning
Copper   Acid
Gold           Fire
Green   Poison
Red           Fire
Silver   Cold
White   Cold

[Sorry Lee, this isn't a full game, this is a choose your own adventure. Right now we're making a shared character for the purpose of this particular story. I will be making an actual game in the near future and everyone will get to make their own characters.]

You are a copper dragonborn! You stand at 6+ feet tall, weighing around 250 pounds. Your kind reaches adulthood at around 15, and live to be about 80.
Your scales are the gleaming red-gold color of copper and you have a pair of glands in your throat that can eject a stream of boiling acid.
Now there's a few more things we need to know about you.

Are you a male or female dragonborn? [This will have no effect on your abilities or social standing, merely appearance. Although it should be noted that other races often have difficulty telling the difference when it comes to dragonborn.]

What is your class? Your character class determines what sort of hero you are, whether a spell slinging wizard or a rampaging barbarian. Your class determines what ability scores are most useful for you and what skills and powers you develop.

Barbarian: Warriors who rely on bestial rage and brute force to smash enemies with melee weapons. Good for characters with high Strength and Constitution. [PSST. CONAN. This one is Conan the barbarian.]
Bard. Mystical performers who harness the echoes of Creation itself to play soul stirring ballads, weave magic and cast illusions. Good for characters with high Charisma. [Jack Sparrow, Kubo etc.]
Cleric. Priests of the divine chosen by the Gods and granted holy powers to do their bidding. Good for characters with high Wisdom, Constitution or Charisma. [Saints, Jedi etc.]
Druid. Magic users who draw on the powers of nature, birds, beasts and trees to protect the wild places and civilization alike. Good for characters with high Constitution and Wisdom. [Getafix, Beorn, the Na Vi etc]
Fighter. Masters of weapons and armor, Fighters can be warriors, guards, knights, pirates and more. Good for characters with high Dexterity, Constitution or Strength. [Aragorn, Gimli, King Arthur etc.]
Monk. Expert martial artists who can channel ki to perform miraculous feats. Good for characters with high Wisdom and Dexterity. [Po, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee]
Paladin. Holy knights who channel their devotion to smite evil, protect the innocent and heal the wounded. Good for characters with high Constitution and Charisma. [Finn the human, etc]
Ranger. Agile hunters and foresters skilled with light weapons, bows and animal companions. Good for characters with high Dexterity and Wisdom. [Strider, Legolas, Hawkeye etc.]
Rogue. Subtle thieves, lethal thugs and deadly assassins. Rogues use stealth and surprise to their advantage. Good for characters with high Dexterity and Charisma. [Jack Sparrow, Tauriel, Kili, etc.]
Sorcerer. Powerful spellcasters who derive their powers from their supernatural lineage, often being the offspring of dragons, giants or other such beings. Good for characters with high Charisma. [Maleficent, Galadriel etc.]
Warlock. Spellcasters who gain power from bargains made with beings from beyond reality, be they Fey, Fiend, or something else entirely. Good for characters with high Charisma and Constitution. [Faust, Ice King, Peter Pan etc.]
Wizard. Spellcasters who draw power from knowledge, studying magic for years to accumulate dozens of spells. Good for characters with high Intelligence and Wisdom [Harry Potter, Gandalf, Nanny McPhee etc.]

My vote is for a barbarian! And I'd probably pick a male character but I do not have strong opinions about that
