“Do you think we’ll ever have a chance after this war to have a family again?” Thérèse asked in a small voice. She still wanted children. “If we live through it that is.” Thérèse felt so guilty for living this long, how would she ever survive the guilt of living through the war?

"That's how it always goes, right? War ends and we go back to normal lives, pretending we didn't just sacrifice any of our humanity for no real reason," Auguste shrugged.

“But who would ever give us that chance?” She asked. “Nobody should have to. We- I don’t deserve it. It’ll be best for everyone if I don’t make it through this war.”

Auguste's brows furrowed with concern. "Why would you say that?" He asked.

“The only reason I’m alive is because of some random timing for  all the terrible things. If I had been home when the Nazis came for my family, they would have killed me too. It was the same for the kids. There’s no good reason for me to be alive, but here I am. I don’t deserve it,” she shook her head, it was starting to hurt and felt fuzzy. “It’s like some cruel joke, like god just wants me to watch everyone around me die and make me live through it all.”

"If we all thought like that then there'd be no end to this war," Auguste said, shaking his head. "You can'tthink like that. Everything...everyone has a purpose, Thérèse. Even if it's not apparent to you in the moment, it'll be clear soon enough. You just have to find the strength to keep going." He bit his lip for a moment, debating his next words. "And you...you're strong enough."

Thérèse’s lips quivered, but she refused to cry. “Thank you, Auguste.” She stood and swayed a little, going to the window to look out. “Some days it doesn’t feel like I am.”

"No, I shouldn't think so. You've lost a lot." Auguste watched her for a moment before he stood.

“We’ve all lost a lot,” she replied, watching him stand. “Where are you off too? Storm is still raging.”

"My leg's feeling stiff," he explained and glanced down at it. "I was just going to walk around the house and stretch it a bit."

Félicien had lied down, staring at the ceiling. The room was spinning yet he felt numb. It had been the first time in a year that he had told anybody, and now he felt weird; he wasn't used to opening up like that.

Thérèse stared around at the boys. Everyone seemed rather miserable. She felt like the needed to lighten the mood. “I wonder if they have cards in here. Play some games?”

"I don't think I can see straight," Félicien muttered, rolling on to his front. "But, I mean, sure. If you can find some I'll try to play."

She smiled a little and went off in search. She found a deck of cards fairly easily, sitting in the cupboard. “Alright, let’s play something.”

[what kind of card games would they have played back then?]

<**I looked it up and I have no idea how to play any of them sooo**>

Félicien managed to push himself up into a sit, rubbing his head. He felt awkward suddenly. All of those heart wrenching conversations and now they were pretending like everything was happy and normal. "Lady picks the game," he said gruffly.
