Behemoth *Spoilers* Thread
« on: August 05, 2010, 11:28:29 PM »

Obviously, this thread contains spoilers.

So, here is what we know right now (will be updated when more information is released):

-Amazon Product Description:

Quote
The behemoth is the fiercest creature in the British navy. It can swallow enemy battleships with one bite. The Darwinists will need it, now that they are at war with the Clanker powers. Deryn is a girl posing as a boy in the British Air Service, and Alek is the heir to an empire posing as a commoner. Finally together aboard the airship Leviathan, they hope to bring the war to a halt. But when disaster strikes the Leviathan's peacekeeping mission, they find themselves alone and hunted in enemy territory.

Alek and Deryn will need great skill, new allies, and brave hearts to face what's ahead.

-The Leviathan will go to the US & Japan in a later novel

The appallingly tangled Chapter 26 of Behemoth submits to my authority AT LAST. All your plot twists are belong to me!

When history fits my needs: The revolving door is patented in 1881 (win) in Germany (double win) and goes IRL in 1899 (15 years to spare).

Just wrote a species of Hollywood cliche I thought I never would: an escape on top of a train. But it's not MOVING, so it doesn't COUNT.

Spoiler Alert! An odd sentence from my Scrivener corkboard for Behemoth: "Ch 24. The barnacles are delivered, but things go pear-shaped."

Writing Historicals Annoys Me #713: Does anybody know how people stored eggs in 1914? Surely not in the modern container. In a box of straw?

Perhaps three major plot twists in two short chapters is one major twist too many. Or maybe it's just my brain, shattered by writing them.

Probaby a joke:

The copyeditor seems confused that Deryn can see perfectly in pitch darkness. But Deryn has the proportional night vision of a SPIDER!

There are also the Pace Charts for the first 12 chapters:

Quote
Ch 1 (Deryn's POV): A fencing lesson
Ch 2 (Alek's POV): The (gryffinator?? XD) attacks!
Ch 3 (Alek's POV): The (Tesla?) cannon fires
Ch 4 (Deryn's POV): Deryn saves Newkirk from a watery grave
Ch 5 (Deryn's POV): Alek is wounded and imprisoned
Ch 6 (Deryn's POV): Deryn delivers a message
Ch 7 (Alek's POV):The engines are repaired, but (sorry, I seem to have forgotten what this said)
Ch 8 (Alek's POV):Alek explores the airship and finds the (lizard?) room
Ch 9 (Alek's POV):Deryn opens up to Alek about her father's death
Ch 10 (Deryn's POV): The airship arrives over Istanbul
Ch 11 (Deryn's POV): The (elephant?) strides through the city streets, and is greeted by protests... and attacked!
Ch 12 (Deryn's POV): Deryn takes back control of the (elephant?)

From the audiobook script (not transcribed by me):

Quote
He pointed at the — — — — before.
“I believe you’ve met S– my personal m—. She is a goddess(?) of the Kurdish(?) people.”
“And they’re all here(?) together(?).” Alek said.
“Another excellent observation(?).” Lilit —
“Hush, girl,” N– said, her — making its slow way
toward them. “For too long we were content to look
after our own neighborhoods and let the sultan run the
empire. But the Germans and their m— have
done us a favor- they’ve united us at last.”
Z– knelt beside Alek.
“The machines below are only a fraction of those
pledged to us. We use these five to train, so that a
Kurd knows how to pilot a werewolf(?) and an Arab
an iron golem(?).”
“So you can fight together properly.” Alek said.
“Indeed. My own daughter has mastered(?) all of them.”
“A girl piloting a walker? How utterly-”
Alek saw Lilit’s expression, and cleared his throat.
“How exceptional.”

There is an experpt in the Leviathan paperback which is probably from Chapter 12. Deryn regains control of a mechanized elephant belonging to the Ottomans when it is sabotaged by Germans. Dr. Barlow and Newkirk are also on board (Alek is not mentioned in the excerpt). There is also an American journalist named Eddie Malone who has a Darwinist(?) camera called a "Firefly", which he feeds sugar cubes to.

If you have any additions or corrections post 'em.  :)

I know it's a double post, but I wanted to keep the first post clean for spoilers. *neatfreak*

So... Alek meets a girl called Lilit who is a Kurd(?) and nearly makes a sexist comment. (shame on you, Alek!) XD I wonder if they know who he is, considering what they say about the Germans...

I am also excited about Chapter 1, and I wonder who will be fencing? Deryn watching or participating?  ;D

A few seconds of the Behemoth recording http://scottwesterfeld.com/blog/

If you inspect the script page on the last frame closely, there may be spoilers!

It's true. And then when you read the book, you get to see how they match up

Usually, the spoilers I read are wrong, though. Really annoying.

Has anyone else seen the excerpt from Ch 12 (I assume) printed in the paperback? I found it in the bookstore on Sunday, I guess they put it out early... Anyway, I guess it implies that Americans are Darwinists. Also, I wanna see a picture of Deryn in her dress uniform... :)
