Book Banning Week!
« on: October 02, 2010, 10:29:31 AM »

This week is National Book Banning week. The National Library Association of America sponsors this event. The point is to ban certain books from the public or just from schools. Some books that were challenged this year (but not banned) were books such as Harry Potter, Twilight, Vampire Academy, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc. . Someone not far from my city requested that all anime/manga books be put on the list, because the said books ''drove her child insane''. We've been studying this program in Lit class, and basically we've been mocking it, because it's so ridiculous. My teacher Mrs. Richmond taught us a few quotes this week, my favorite being:
The books that the world calls immoral are the books that show the world its shame- Oscar Wilde

A soldier in the war wrote an autobiography of what it was like in Iraq, and he got in published. 50,000 books were printed, and the government bought all 50,000 books, because they didn't want the public reading it. This is one of many examples.

If a person wants to read a freaking book, they should be able to do it!! The only reason they have this event is because the first amendment doesn't say that you can read whatever you like, you only have free speech.

Yeah, that's a common book we read in high school, too.
I really don't care if they ban Twilight. I can see why they would want to ban Vampire Academy from schools, though. It's a bit mature, but really?

I hate book banning - it's so ridiculous!  Even I would (grudgingly) admit that Twilight shouldn't be banned.  If your child is so easily "corrupted" by books like that and like Harry Potter, then there's no hope for them anyways.

Seriously, if you just read some of the complaints made by parents, it's clear that some of those parents have never even read the book they're complaining about.  For example, Orwell's 1984  was once challenged because they said it was "pro-communist."  Really?  Pro-communist?   >:(

Top four reasons books are banned, at least in the US:

Occult (  ::)  ) Because Harry Potter is a manual of witch craft and will let Satan into your soul...
Anti-Christian
Homosexuality
Sex

You see which side is generally doing the banning.

I see the point of banning certain books from elementary schools for mature content, but this is a bit much. Harry Potter? Seriously? And manga driving someone insane? The kid was probably already crazy to begin with- the books had nothing to do with it.
