Don't judge all the Clankers by just a handful of people.

You can't judge a large group by just a few members.  It's like aliens capturing a saintly nun and therefore thinking all humans are good, kind, and wear black robe-like-dress-things.

What if each part-of-an-animal had a separate consciousness?

I think Huxleys are a little bit creepy, but fascinating.

That would be good, and doesn't soud like it'd be too hard for the Leviathan scientists to do.

Making the Huxleys look prettier would also be good. When you closely examine the illustrations in the book, the huxleys look like clumps of diseased mushrooms.

It's. . . . .plausible.  Sentience is gradient, after all.

That's ok, Saira-La.  Sentience is consciousness, and most people think that it's black and white (either you are sentient, or you aren't).  But in reality, it's more like various shades of gray.  If insects are indeed conscious, they'd be far to one side of the spectrum.  Humans view ourselves as completely sentient, so we'd be on the opposite side from insects.  I think.

I saw a documentery on jellyfish
there was a species that they said was as intelligent as a cat
not the same thing as sentience/conciousness
but for a creature that's so different from mamels to have inelligence that matches a cat is very interesting because like you said before they don't have a 'brain'
I think it was that those conecter brain cell-things are threaded throughout the jellys body
I'm not sure if that's right I saw the documenter about three years ago
