Also, Volger knows that if Alek did become emperor, they would be RICH. Therefore, he will we rewarded for the stress he had to deal with in the past decade.

And he would, presumably, have a lot of political influence, something, I think, Volger has always wanted.

Yep, it's official! Volger could totally identify with Sirius Black. But in that same way, I don't think Volger's really ever stopped to think about what Alek truly wants. I think he's assured that Alek wants to be emperor as much as he wants him to be. I don't think Alek is as sure about himself. He doesn't have the qualities he thinks are needed to be an emperor, like knowing the right things to say.

I don't even think Alek really wants to be emperor, he has just always been told that that is important, and noble, and he has always felt that this would be the only way to prove himself to the relatives that have always looked down on him. I think that he would have made a good emperor, though... in a different time. Alek hasn't yet reached the stage of adult independence and thinking for himself that he needs to realize that he doesn't really need or want to be emperor. He won't be giving up the throne romantically for Deryn, he will give it up because he doesn't really want it. When he is confronted with a choice between something he really cares about (Deryn) and something he doesn't (the empire), he will realize this.

Amen. I've always felt really bad for him, he's still just a kid, the world expects way too much of him. Being somewhat around his age, no way could I deal with all the stuff he has to deal with. I hate it when people accuse him of being weak, since he's anything but that.

The movie Elf! It's from the part in the north pole when a friendly narwhal rises up from the icy waters. Probably the best part in the whole movie.

Oh yeah, I totally loved that part of the movie, because the Narwhal has a really deep voice! Little cartoon characters with big voices are my favorite!

OBEY!

I like Batman because he's a true hero. Not some alien or a dude who gained weird powers, but just a guy who decided that bad people sucked. He's also dealing out justice to real criminals, instead of a harmless villan.

Yeah, the whole "Bye Buddy, hope you find your dad" thing is now what my friends and I say to each other instead of just goodbye. It's quite fun.

It's possible that Alek could ascend a throne when the throne doesn't mean much. He could live off the commoners' tax money, just so that they all keep some national identity while Alek sits on a parade float and waves at them once a year. Maybe the senate or parliament or whatever group will really be running things, would go through the motions of getting Alek's opinion on how things should go and then ignore him.

Actually, that's kind of depressing. I like to think that he elopes with Deryn, finishes a degree in political science, and maybe in twenty years he ascends to power in a unified Ottoman Republic because a lot of people see that he both has good ideas and knows what he's doing. And with no corruption whatsoever, somehow, he supports both Volger's retirement and Deryn's career. (The latter because, in my mind, Deryn eventually had to take a job mucking beastie stables to pay for his textbooks in the final semester. I hate my mind.)

Heh, that would be interesting. But, Alek isn't only interesting in ruling/managing things. He also really likes piloting, and I think he may make his career in that. Rather more humble.  ;D

True! He could be like Captain Carrot, sticking with a technically lower-ranking career because he can do so much more good there and he likes it. And anyone who goes on about bloodlines and birthrights can... keep that unpleasant talk to themselves. ;P
