I remembered another crossdressed soldier when I re-read an article from my undergraduate thesis the other day.... Hannah Snell. She seems very Deryn-like to me. She sailed in the Royal Navy for two years. Later she demanded her pension from the government an actually got it. This was back in 1750, though. XD She then sold her story to a publisher and made some money from that too. Unfortunately, later versions of her biography were heavily edited to make her seem more "feminine" for Victorian sensibilities.

LOLZ! I like in the "Provides examples of:" section where they say; "Attractive Bent Gender: Judging from the illustrations, Deryn makes a damn fine guy and girl. Alek and Lilit vouch for this as well."

Now that I've gotten around to reading Behemoth, I'm convinced that the love triangle template was inspired by Yentl, and the big big robots were inspired by mecha anime. Gonna read Goliath tonight to see how it ends, nobody spoil me yet.
