Averageness-ness
« on: March 03, 2010, 12:29:45 PM »

So I was reading Bogus to Bubbly and in it Scott-la was talking about average faces being beautiful and face averaging software... this got me curious so I turned my sights to Google and came across this website... http://www.faceresearch.org/demos/average... I can't really think of any useful reason for this thread other than 5 minutes of amusement and to make you say "cool!!", "wow!!" or "weird!!" but any single word sentences are good in my books  :P

Peace ;)

Well, I'm entertained. (Goodbye, homework I should be doing).

I like the science link that goes with it:

Pedestrian, awesome linkage, I hadn't checked out that page on the site yet :) the research at the bottom by Perrett et al. (1994) is really interesting... also annoying, as now we're back to the guessing game of what really is attractive, but interesting none the less =P

Does anyone have their own ideas on what makes attractiveness attractive? :)

Personally I'd say it's all social conditioning, but then again i say that for everything... if you can't blame a singular, blame a collective!! +P

interesting...
there are probably lots of things which determine what people find attractive- things such as blonde hair are said to be attractive because blonde hair is less common so blonde people tend to have a larger gene pool; natural things such as facial symettry- people tend to prefer symettrical faces etc. Also, if someone is constantly featured in magazines and described as being attractive, then i suppose people start to find them attratcive...

We were talking about evolutionary psychology and attractiveness in Psych yesterday. o___o The whole time I kept thinking about Uglies.
My Psych teacher said a lot of the same things Scott said...symmetry, the "golden ratio", health, youthful appearance. He also mentioned the thing about wanting to protect little kids' because their big heads and big eyes make them look vulnerable.

And after that...well, it's not cultural. Maybe a little. Like, if earrings are attractive is cultural. But other stuff is evolutionary.

I hate Psych, actually. xD
Not the subject. The class. The subject is interesting. But I hate how my teacher teaches. RAAGGGEEE.
But that's another the story.

Evolutionary psych was extremely interesting.
If disturbing.

yeah a lot of things that are suppose to make you pretty, like golden ratio and symmetry do make you pretty to a certain degree but i think that its based on personal preference. though culturally we are brought up to like similar things, like youth, being thin and things like that
