How does PEEPS mean Parasite Positive?
« on: January 14, 2012, 02:46:09 PM »

Okay, I've read PEEPS and The Last Days, and the PEEPS name is really bothering me.

Besides being incredibly cutesie and being the same name as an Easter marshmallow candy, I just don't understand how you get from Parasite Positive to PEEPS.

The closest I can think is it's the first and last letters of the two words, but that would be PEPEs.

I've tried to find information on how Scott Westerfeld came up with this, but haven't come across it yet.  Anyone know the answer?

I don`t know...
Some words just get shortened in odd forms, I guess.
The thing I don`t understand is why he groups So Yesterday into this "trilogy". It really has nothing to do with the other two books, and it`s hardly even the same genre of book, anyway.

Well, if he had titled the books PePe's, less people would be inclined to read it. I mean...er, sound it out. Pepe?

Plus, Peeps is actually a word, and anyone that is an Uglies fan knows that one of the reasons Scott made the protagonists name "Tally" is because he could type it without that red scribble spellcheck line under it. I don't blame him, really.

Since just the word Peeps comes up in the book a LOT, he might have just made it Peeps because 1) you can type it a lot without the red scribble line 2)it just sounds better. :)

I think that the logic thing didn't have so much of a play as the cool and pronouncible factors did.

Ah, so to summarize:
- lack of scribbles
- sounds cool/easy to pronounce
- possibly related to "They're my peeps" as in to mean a group you associate yourself with
- logic basically fails so don't try

Lol. Thanks for the help everyone. I feel a bit better about it now. Although I still keep thinking about marshmallow chickens? (birds of some sort) when I here the name lol.

Yeah, I haven't read the book in so long. But since this topic whenever I reread it I will probably have the same problem you're having LOL. ;D

Haha, it's no big deal. It's one of the things I learned in Bogus to Bubbly.
