He isn't... i don't think alek did anything clever during the whole series, he only was correcting his own mistakes...

He's also missing basic qualities that he (as a future leader) should have...
I also think that at the begining of Leviathan, he uses a manual, in order to crush a much weaker enemy...

I mean look at how long Alek took to find out his BESTFRIEND was a girl! I mean seriously. He was basically playing with toys when his parents died while Deryn was cross-dressing up some awesomeness!

Did you not notice, but Alex found out before Dr.Barlow! I guess it really depends on a persons definition of idiot.

What ushuld realize is that they have thier differences for a reason   its like that way to keep the story interesting   alek is ment to be more like a princee   cool headed but still making rash decisions if he thinks its for the best   and deryn  ment to be rash and quick thinking

Aww, come on guys, why is everybody being so mean to Alek?

I actually think Alek has proven himself to be a very good leader. Like how he instantly took charge after their semi-failed escape from the Leviathan in Behemoth. Alek is very diplomatic in Goliath and has a head for politics. And then the Austrian people did warm up to him in Goliath and Alek had a good poker face. Plus, Alek is crazy loyal.

He has a lot of courage in the face of adversity and always has a sense of nobility and composure regardless of what is happening to him. Alek always keeps his cool. He will never get over his parents death, that’s not really something you get over. However, I think it made him stronger.

And he actually did figure out Deryn’s secret, and her secret WASN’T obvious. I don’t know why people think it was. Obviously we only knew because it was part of the story. And if we use this logic when being applied to Alek’s level of intelligence then he would in theory be smarter than Dr. Barlow.

He was sort of forced to grow up really quickly in the series. He seems to have a quiet strength that people seem to ignore. Plus Deryn seemed a wee bit arrogant to me and not as complex as Alek.
