That’s not what I meant by rude. I was referring to the constant mocking of Alek, not what you said to Deathchicken. And I am sorry if I was rude but I just feel as though Alek gets a lot of undeserved crap. And then I feel like the bad guy when I try to defend him. Leviathan is my favorite book and I have a deep, if not slightly unhealthy, connection to this book, Alek, and his story. So when I hear these sorts of comments, I find it a little hurtful, and I get a little testy and get really large and turn green and then I feel really guilty afterwards, sorry.
Alek isn’t perfect, some things had to happen, I know that, but he deserves a little credit. But even when he does good he can’t win, he stills gets dissed. Like yeah, it probably wasn’t very smart to go assist an enemy ship, but it was also very brave and heroic but nobody seems to care about that part. Without him the ship would have died, Deryn would have had frostbitten bum, and everyone would have hated him if he had stayed home. And he wasn’t completely reckless, he took precautions. But apparently everyone else just saw that Alek was an idiot and Deryn saved the day.
As far as Deryn’s secret goes. Volger’s a genius. And I love him which is why I am thrilled he was the first to find out about it. I can’t hate Volger for figuring it out earlier any attempt to do so would just result in fangirlish squealing. Volger tends to study people, and he spent a lot of time around Deryn teaching her to fence. And you don’t assume your best friend is a different gender just because he acts weird, especially when he is so much different from you. And in 1914 you don’t expect a boy to be a girl. I think it is perfectly reasonable that it took him a while, and when he did find out I thought it made him seem smart.
I don’t care if Alek makes mistakes, or if people like Deryn more. What bothers me is that nobody seems to acknowledge the good he does but love to jump and make fun of the bad. It is as if he cannot do anything right. It is the case when it comes to his leadership skills, his intelligence, his bravery, etc. And it goes beyond simply expressing opinions to offensive and rude comments. That is what I meat. I would say more but this post is already long.
