Though Alek is deep, he is sometimes quite on the up-take though. It is probably do to his upbringing as a royal like how he doesn't know how to handle commidities like money. Though he gets wayy better at doing normal things, as displayed by his political skills in Goliath (though you could also argue that he had an edge because of his royal upbringing).
Alek is book smarts and wasn't so street-smarts, though he's getting better at that now (:

Did you not read my last post?

You know, it is one thing to dislike Alek but you don't have to be so rude and callous about it.

well firstly why am i rude? ...you're rude... I just can't understand what he's writing, if you can please tell me also...
secondly i don't know what callus means... you callus...
and thrirdly i had read your last post...

but you know something? , a smart person wouldn't leave his castle in the middle of the night going to help an enemy ship... , a smart person would understand that his best friend is a girl, after hanging out with her almost the whole day (Volger understood in much less time)...

But the book needed alek to meet up with deryn, the book needed to entangle Alek's and Deryn's destinies, without Alek realizing that Deryn was a girl until the very last moment... The book needed Alek to be an idiot, and do stupid things (like those in Lienz, like throwing everything that his father left him...)...
the same way the book needed Tesla being crazy, and Volger and Barlow being annoying...well that's what i think...

And Alek wasn't forced to grow up quickly, he was well trained to be in charge... all the lessons he took was in order to make him a good leader... all the hereditary leaders back then were trained so...
But leaders aren't always made they are also born... Alexander the Great won his first battles at the same age of Alek... and that's why Alek despite his training makes silly things (as the books need)...

sorry for my english...
and sorry if i'm rude...
Now excuse me, i'll leave... i have to rearrange my socks drawer......

That’s not what I meant by rude. I was referring to the constant mocking of Alek, not what you said to Deathchicken. And I am sorry if I was rude but I just feel as though Alek gets a lot of undeserved crap. And then I feel like the bad guy when I try to defend him. Leviathan is my favorite book and I have a deep, if not slightly unhealthy, connection to this book, Alek, and his story. So when I hear these sorts of comments, I find it a little hurtful, and I get a little testy and get really large and turn green and then I feel really guilty afterwards, sorry.

Alek isn’t perfect, some things had to happen, I know that, but he deserves a little credit. But even when he does good he can’t win, he stills gets dissed. Like yeah, it probably wasn’t very smart to go assist an enemy ship, but it was also very brave and heroic but nobody seems to care about that part. Without him the ship would have died, Deryn would have had frostbitten bum, and everyone would have hated him if he had stayed home. And he wasn’t completely reckless, he took precautions. But apparently everyone else just saw that Alek was an idiot and Deryn saved the day.

As far as Deryn’s secret goes. Volger’s a genius. And I love him which is why I am thrilled he was the first to find out about it. I can’t hate Volger for figuring it out earlier any attempt to do so would just result in fangirlish squealing. Volger tends to study people, and he spent a lot of time around Deryn teaching her to fence. And you don’t assume your best friend is a different gender just because he acts weird, especially when he is so much different from you. And in 1914 you don’t expect a boy to be a girl. I think it is perfectly reasonable that it took him a while, and when he did find out I thought it made him seem smart.

I don’t care if Alek makes mistakes, or if people like Deryn more. What bothers me is that nobody seems to acknowledge the good he does but love to jump and make fun of the bad. It is as if he cannot do anything right. It is the case when it comes to his leadership skills, his intelligence, his bravery, etc. And it goes beyond simply expressing opinions to offensive and rude comments. That is what I meat. I would say more but this post is already long.

c-c-c-c-combo breaker!
I just think that Alek is a really interesting character and though he does do somethings weirdly, and foolishly to an extent, it's because he was raised so different. He probably thinks that a lot of the things that normal people do are mundane or don't get why they do it.
