Can you say Tally is a bad character?
ThePenIsMightier:
A lot of people say they don't like tally because she annoys them.
Here is the thing though, Tally WAS naive as an Ugly, BUT SO WAS EVERYBODY ELSE. Tally does whatever she wants impulsively without thinking about the consequences. She really wanted to "grow up" and didn't want anything to get in her way. The Ugly world was all she knew, you can't blame her for wanting to be a Pretty.
"Being Ugly hurts almost as much as the knife would if they were even awake for that"
When Tally went to the smoke because that is what she had to do to become pretty, she wasn't thinking about Shay, she just didn't want to become pretty and in a way that is understandable. Once she got there she saw real people instead of the neanderthals that she probably envisioned.
Tally is impulsive, that's who she is. She also makes choices based on herself and herself only. I wouldn't go as far as calling her selfish because she really does care about people. But when you think about it, what time does tally have for emotions when she is so busy working on her own head?
You have to be like Tally to be able to get through the whole Uglies world. Most of us would be pretties uf not now than within the next few years.
It is totally fine to say you don't like Tally as a person but don't insult her. Can you really say she is a bad character? She may not be BFF material but she is REAL. She is far from perfect which sets the irony for the series of how perfection-based the worlds of Uglies and yes, Extas are (reputation economies come with a certain standard).
Scott is a GENIUS. I'd like to see other authors pull that off, I wish I could.
So again, dislike Tally all you want but you still have to respect her. :)

I think there's a vast difference between a "bad character," and an annoying one. I've stated that I disliked Tally's decisions many times, but that's her decisions, not herself. If Tally had done anything different, the story wouldn't have been nearly as mind-blowing. I think that's what Scott was getting at: Someone who makes wrong and rash decisions out of cowardice and anger, but can still change the world, because not every superhero is decent person. Her actions show the corrupted world as it is, no matter how corrupted she is herself. (It's sorta like Sherlock. BBC YEAHHHHH ;D)If Tally was a bad character, then she wouldn't need to be in the story.
I don't think she's a bad character. I think she's a bad friend, and makes bad decisions. She does have redeeming qualities. But if it weren't for those bad decisions, then I'm sure everyone would still be a bubblehead. So there's a dark and light side to her character.
Reenie-La:
I love Tally all in and all out--she is kick-awesome.
Dunno why everyone thinks she is annoying :P
elliebug91:
Tally is awesome, Scott did a wonderful job with the series. lol, people are allowed to have their own opinions about characters, about anything really. No matter how hard someone tries to push people in one direction to like that idea, someone is going to pull back in the opposite direction. so let's just leave it at that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. :]
Luna Lovegood:
Okay, I'm a Tally hated, so I'll list just a couple of things I don't like about her. 1, she, as you said, makes bad choices, is rash, not that great of a friend, it fixated on looks (Not holding that 1 against cuz of the culture) and not the brightest. Yet everyone is all like "Tally you're a special person, you're so great, we love you." Having someone like that get showered with praise is annoying.
2nd. I felt like it was Shay and Zane who were the real hero's, Tally would never have done anything without them, never gone to the smoke, never try to think her way out of being a bubbly head.
Just saying.
