The Succession Series
« on: January 07, 2010, 12:20:25 PM »

I'm a huge sci-fi fan, but I don't have anything lined up to read at the moment.  Although I'm primarily interested in Leviathan, the Succession books also sound interesting.  I'm a huge fan of space opera, and have read many works in the sub-genre.  For instance, the Dune novels by Frank Herbert or the Lensman series by "Doc" E.E. Smith.  I like worlds in the style of settings such as Star Wars or Star Trek, with alien races (though there doesn't have to be), advanced technology and such.  Does it sound like the series would appeal to me?

It's very possible...have you read any of Scott's books before? I wouldn't say Leviathan (from what I have read of it) is anything like those, but it is set in an alternate reality of sorts...google "steampunk." If that interests you, definitely check it out. If you haven't read anything by Scott before, and those are the kinds of stories/settings you enjoy, I suggest you check out his Uglies series, that is set in a futuristic world, closer to things like you mentioned. Most of Scott's books are set in an "other world" in some form or another, so read the story plots, and if they sound interesting to you, check them out.

The Risen Empire (its not really a series, they only chopped it into two books for the USA) is very dune-ish, so I think you'd like it if thats your style.

It was actually the first book by him I read, and it got me chasing his other SF anf then eventually his YA stuff (although paradoxically I got into the Uglies books last of all basically).

Their is some decent space SF in Evolution's Darling as well.  If you don't mind fairly intense human/human, human/robot, human/human/robot, human/spaceship(!) sex scenes.

Jack

EDIT: I'm hazarding a guess you like 40k by your name, which the Risen Empire also put me in the mind of to some degree (immortal emperor and all).

Remote actuators...to put it bluntly(and without engaging in inappropriate descriptivism)

But I dig the Futurama reference Jimmy, cannot wait for them to start airing new episodes again this fall (yay!)

Yeah I rather like it, I just know the sex scenes might put some folks off.

It specifically addresses the "what makes a man" question about AI and the like in an interesting way.
