You should incorporate other books, like he dreams that he is a Midnighter or a Pretty. Or even a tribute (The Hunger Games) or a wizard (Harry Potter) or a demigod (PJO)....ya I'm a nerd.
He could also dream of some romance thing between himself and "Dylan".

I feel like Dr Barlow would have that effect on a lot of people...

He could dream about a giant Tazza who eats the Leviathan (and anyone inside) so he and Dr. Barlow are the only ones left. And Dr. Barlow continues to insist that he takes Tazza for frequent walks.

( that sounds like a dream I would have.  :o)

Newkirk seems like he would fall asleep on a full stomach and have the weirdest dreams.  Like, he would dream of giant playing cards playing cricket while horses dressed up as women danced around a giant pumpkin

I know, but it wasn't white, which in black and white pics usually means blone. And his hair in the picture was darkish looking. It's the one with Deryn and Newkirk on the whale watching a kraken eat an old boat.
Deryn's hair looked dark in that picture too, though. I think it was just weird lighting.

I think I've already mentioned this, but I imagine Newkirk to be strawberry blonde.

Finally, some people whom focus on widdle Newkirk! I'm thinking... Huge and menacing Dr. Barlow's everywhere, all telling him to "Go walk Tazza!"
