Chapter One

News flash! There is currently no contest going on! There is no rush to comment!

Here’s why: I have a short story to write this week. Justine and I are both contributing to an anthology of five short stories called Love is Hell. It’s a sequel to Prom Nights from Hell, which featured Meg Cabot, Lauren Myracle, Michelle Jaffe, Kim Harrison, and Stephenie Meyer.

I’m not sure who’s in this one besides us yet—watch this space for news. But the stories are due soon. (And, um, mine’s going a little slowly.)

So I’m not going to post for a week or so. And when I do come back it will be with a calmer way to distribute samplers. So don’t kill yourself obsessively refreshing.

But how will you entertain yourselves? Well, for one thing you can go check out the Inside a Dog blog, where Justine and I will still be posting. It’s been really fun so far, with lots of writing questions asked and answered.

Of course, here you can while away the time doing something like . . . reading and discussing the first chapter of Extras:

  3. I LOVE IT! I have always read his books! I am waiting for the library to let me read the book. There are 4 copies, and I’m in the shortest line, # 9!

  4. Uglies…exilerating…Pretties…wow…..Specials….(sobbing)…..
Scott is obviously a genius, and it really shines with the Ugllies trilogy. Gah… I wish I was a special. Shayshal. Wow. Could it get any better?

Zane. Sad. David. Mad. Sad. Happy. Sick. Tally. Me. In all forms and natures. Aya. Interesting. Wow it will take a long time to get used to her, being with Tally for so long….
(can’t wait to get my publisher all jelous with Extras in my hands…)

  5. Here again…Not enough words to even put into retrospective what Uglies did for me.

That’s how I wrote the first half of my story, met my best friend, publisher, and boss, E.M.O. (and no she’s not a cutter!)
Figured I would try and find something new, and hey I’m only 12, reading about places called Crumblyville, and rollercoasters, hoverboards, bionic women, blah , blah, blah, and instantly I was hooked. I cried my eyes out when Specials was over and now I scream with delight over Extras!

  6. It just made me cry. I threw my mouse at the wall when I found out that Extras were here, and now I have to pay $58 for wall putty and a new mouse. Not including the paint, mind you Eva.

(she likes to make fun of me when i do that)

    Bye Bye, Dad calling me!

  7. Hey, I love the chapter.
I can’t wait to read it all. I am on top of it!
The Uglies series is my favorite thing to read, ever. I couldn’t put any of the books down. I bawled my eyes out when, Zane, died. I wanted to hurt you, Scott. Like how could you make him die?
    Haha.
You’re making movies, right? I can’t wait to see them!!!

    I love this, so much!

  8. Wow. I can not wait to get this book! You are a really good writer Scott Westerfeld. I hope to become a sci-fi writer someday too. ^_^
Tally and David are definately my favorite couple. My main character in a book I’m writing now is David, and even though he’s got a total different personality and everything in your books, I freaked when I saw the name in Uglies. I was crying and screaming and running around my house. My parents thought I was dying haha.
Yeah, I can’t wait for this book! I need to get to a book store before the week is over.
