Here you go:

And thus ends page one. That’s actually the first page as it appears in the sample booklets handed out at BEA. (It’s more or less the final text, but a couple of words will be different, because there’s always these editors around editing.)

Oh, by the way, I now have several dozen of these samplers:

That’s them sitting on my chair. So many of them! What shall I do with them all? Maybe this . . .

Between now and October 2 the FIRST COMMENTER of each post, including this one, will get a copy of the sampler sent to them! Autographed! By me! To them!

Here are some tips:

1) Make sure that you’ve filled out your email address in the comment log-in box, so I know who you really are.

2) You don’t have to post your address in the comment itself. Just in the log-in thingie.

3) DON’T put your snail mail address anywhere online! I’ll email you and get that.

4) One per person! If you’ve already won on a previous post, be nice and let others conquer.

Remember, this applies to the first commenter only on every post between now and October 2.

  8. The first thing I thought when I read Aya was, “Her name sounds Japanese.” and the -chan just reenforced that idea. …Moogle totally reminds me of Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts too. o_o;

I just woke up and it’s 9:33 and i had a cringe to find out if there was more information about extras. when i saw the first page and getting a sampler i was so happy. then i saw all the comments. by the way, how do you friggin’ know about the commenting after four minutes? :/ anyway, enjoy the book

  74. I have followed as closely as i should lately so im confused. Is Extra’s not from tally’s point of veiw? I know it switched a bit in the last book but Aya is a tottaly new person. do we have to read about tally second-hand? But thinking on it, no matter who is telling the story it is bound to be amazing like all of your other books.

  163. I can’t wait for this book. I read Uglies last year as one of my forced summer reading books and finished it as fast as possible and then analyzed it for my project. Finally, on Saturday, I bought Pretties and Specials after I read Uglies one more time. OMG. I actually called my friend Malik in the middle of the night and cried that Zane had died. I can’t wait for this book and I’m so glad it’s going to mention Tally. To tell you the truth a little, I kind of wanted things to stay where they were after Tally got to Diego, before the cure got out completely. You know humanity is going to mess everything up again.

  173. Last night I was at the mall of america’s Barnes and Noble. In the teen section they had a whole shelf just for you! Under the books read: Tales of Fantasy From the Award-Winning Author Scott Westerfeld. So when we got up to the check-out counter I asked to have it and they said I could have it when they are done using it as a promotion!!!!! Yay!

  175. So scott i’ve been writing a little fan fic for you and i thought i would share it with everyone.

    “So this is it.” Eka thought to herself as she looks up at the big intimidating Ugly school building where she would be living for the next four years. “But no matter how hard I work here I’ll never be as good as Tally.” Eka told herself disgustedly. Just a few weeks ago her family had received news that Eka’s older sister Tally had been recruited to Special Circumstances. Eka’s parents couldn’t have been prouder that their oldest child was one of the city’s respected protectors. And suddenly that was all Eka heard about. Even though she herself was going to Ugly school in a few weeks no one seemed to remember. Eka’s parents told everyone about Tally but never once mentioned Eka’s proud time coming up. Hefting her pack on her shoulder she headed into the building to find her room. “Well hello Mrs. Youngblood, follow me.” Said a woman as soon as Eka stepped into the building. Eka followed obediently. “This was Tally’s room when she was an Ugly we thought you might like to have it.” The lady said opening a door to a plain room. Eka nodded her thanks but inside was thinking “Sure just what I need another reminder of how much better she is than me.” Eka plopped herself down on the bed and fiddled with her drawstring bag as she thought back to last night. It had been near ten p.m. but of course Eka’s family was still up packing and cleaning for the big day tomorrow when there was a knock at the door. Eka ran to open it and just about screamed when she did. For there stood Tally only a very different Tally than the Pretty Tally Eka remembered. Her parents didn’t seem to like Tally’s transformation either but that didn’t make them any less proud. Eka slunk off to her room to finish packing and no one even seemed to notice. Eka blinked a couple of times to get up a menu of options for changing the blank room. Eka knew that most people thought she was a rather weird Littlie because she always wore black and decorated her room in black. So she decided to try to be a normal Ugly and chose red for one wall and white for the other three. “There, that looks fairly normal.” She decided. She then decorated the rest of her room in red and white with silver accents. “No more black.” Eka told herself.

    Ok so i know it’s long but who cares right?

  184. sydney, australia is 15 hours ahead of the eastern time zone. so when it is 3:00 pm on july 3rd where i live, it is the fourth at 6:00 pm!

  194. okay, i’m gonna do a review of the 1st page like scott did to chain mail.

    disclaimer: i don’t own extras (‘course not!). This is just my little opinion of the first page, and whatever i say of it, Scott is still about a million times better at writing than me.

    Chapter name: down and out. possibly an allusion to George Orwell’s famous book Down and Out in Paris and London.

    Beginning of page: it starts with direct speech, which is a bit weird, but also interesting. authors try to get a shocking, oxymoronical or interesting first sentence for readers who open it in a bookstore. The name Moggle is a bit like that.

    The robot, Moggle: well, a bit weird, but its obviously a sophisticated model which is very intelligent. it has feelings, can hear her, etc. Note: it can’t speak, reminiscent of Robbie, the robot nannie in I, Robot b Isaac Asimov.
    And Aya is speaking to the robot. not too weird in itself, but, she’s like, in a dormitory, which normally has lots of people sleeping in it, and she’s not speaking to THEM, so maybe she is kinda a loner, perhaps for being ‘surgery-missing’.
    And its a hovercamera. So she is being watched. Perhaps a bit like the interface cuffs Tally and Zane had to wear.
    At first its easy to imagine Aya is talking to a friend, or even a pet (like a cat). but when it says ‘like a small animal’ that tells us that this thing is definitely not a small animal (later you read on and its a robot)

    Interesting observation #1: aya never uses any speaking verbs except ‘whisper’

    Interesting observation #2: Chan is a suffix thingy, used for Moggle. Is it only used for robots? and Aya uses some Pretty-speak (vision-wrecking) even though she’s not a pretty. The boundaries between pretties and uglies seem even more blurred when it is revealed that some Uglies have surgery to give them infrared.

    Interesting (possibly the most interesting of them all) observation #3: the use of the word prettytime. THat suggests that if it has its own name, it must be pretty (!) much over. No more brain-fogging lesions then.

    … well thats what i think. Hope i win one so i can read the rest of it.

  196. very interesting nick! maybe she is being watched! and maybe -chan is like -la or -wa, the pretties say it at the end of a persons name. and i agree with you that it is weird that an ugly is using pretty terms. i guess since the whole world is like diego, then there is no pretty and ugly, so uglies CAN get surgury (it works on fifteen-year-olds, as it says in uglies!) maybe they get the surgury in stages, like tally wished she could! and im guessing that prettytime is refurring to when pretties had lesions. this book will be very different than the others!

  197. nick, when tally was an ugly, they had shifts when people had to clean up! so maybe she is talking about that. or maybe it is an expression, like she is sneaking out and moggle is covering for her!

  205. Wait since this is after the whole cure thing and the pretty surgery doesn’t make you all bubbly headed…is the pretty surgery still mandatory? If not then why do her parents have an issue with uglies having any surges?

Wait Nick…Moggle is a hovercam but if she was being watched by someone she should be worried about then why would she wake it up at night and it appears as though she is about to do something she isn’t suppose to. It seems more like a friend than an observation tool. And Chan is a suffix that is used for people your age in japan. Like i’m 17 if aya was 17 and my friend i’d call her aya-chan…i think and if they are older i think they add the suffix san to the end.

    A. the cover of Extras (if it’s the same as the ones up top) is uber cool.
    B. I adore your books. I am going to be an author myself, so I truly get sucked into the vacuum of a plot when I read. I am planning on rereading the three published so far, as, of course, I have all of them. I went to Barnes and Noble two days ago and got three books and read them all, so today when I went back to find an empty notebook and my eye just caught on your “So Yesterday” book… I was like… “Scott Westerfeld… Scot Westerfeld… that name…. it sounds so familiar…. ahh…. what was it he wrote?   272. So yesterday is wonderful, I’d lend it to you, but I don’t know you. lol. I bought it purely because he was the author, and I read it in a few hours, just could not put it down… I don’t think I did, actually. Put it down, that is. Like at all. I’d really recommend it. I didn’t think I’d like it at first because I’m like “Oh the back says he’s a person who looks for the new ‘cool thing’ but then his boss dissapears oo000oooh… right… same old thing.” But like I said, I bought it because he was the author and I trusted it to be good. It was WONDERFUL. It’s one of those books that expresses ideas that I personally don’t think about alot, for instance the whole “cool” triangle in it. Like are you a Trend setter, an intovator, then there’s others… like someone who see’s it one place and then gets it, or someone who has to see it everywhere before getting it, because they think it’s cool but then it’s not. It has tons of cool stuff in it. And refers to name brands in ways that don’t actually say it, other than for google, but like Pokemon. didn’t actually say it, but talked about it… and idk. There was a bunch of great stuff in it.. you should go buy it and read it, it is worth the like 8 bucks it costs. Seriously.

  280. i love ur books alot. it was my brother who originally got me to read Uglies and now i’ve read the whole trilogy and i’m dying for Extras to come out. im even planning on reading some of ur other books and i think im going to like them alot.
    i wanted to say though that after i had finished reading pretties i was excited to read specials, but when i read the little preview that you had in the back i was kind of mad that Tally had just turned Special without much of a fight.
    but now that i’ve read Specials, everytime i think of the whole trilogy, i get really sad:( (here i am, a 15 yr old grl gettin wrapped up in a fictious book). i feel kind of bad that Tally’s whole life was one unfair event after another- she could never just have it her way for more than 10 minutes.
    but yours is the only book that ive ever read that hasnt left me thinking of all the ways i could have changed it to make it better. it seems to me that you wrote it in a way so that the ending you have is the only way her story could end. . . but still, the end of the Uglies trilogy still does make me pretty sad. . .
    well i can’t wait for your Extras book to come out, hopefully i get to see what becomes of Tally’s old city. thanks for writing really good books. . .until next time

    you know sometimes I hate it that authors take so LONG to write they’re books, but then I read them and they are usually utterly amazing(like your books) that I understand.   344. The fire was crackling and sparks flew into the dark sky. The timing was perfect, he rolled over to grab his knapsack and pulled out the plastic bag filled with fluffy, sticky white cylinders. Caydn looked at the bag in curiosity, “What are those things?”
    “Well there food, like a sweet and gooey dessert,” he knew this would be a surprise.
    “But there not dehydrated like a dessert and they don’t look like anything I’ve ever had.”
    “They’re called marshmallows, you cook them in the fire until they swell up and then you eat them.” Troy then grabbed the stick he had found while searching for wood and speared a marshmallow on its tip. Rotating in the fire it swelled to twice its size. Caydn squealed in surprise as it burst into flames. Drawing the flame close to his lips he blew it out and pulled the warm marshmallow off the stick offering it to Caydn. Slowly she grabbed the marshmallow and glanced back at him a smile spreading across her face before she took a bite.
    “This is sooo good!” Caydn laughed as she bit and sucked the sticky goo from her fingers. She looked so beautiful as the firelight danced across her face making her look joyful and alive. Long gone were the nights of crying she did when they first met by the river. They were so in tuned to one another now and he loved it… and her. Caydn looked at him eyes glowing with an intensity that took his breath away and he moved closer, his arm touching hers, he sensed her flinch and look down at the touching arms and he felt her hand slowly clasp around his. He looked at her as she laid her head on his shoulder a sigh leaving her soft pink lips. Troy longed to finally kiss her to say they were together and that nothing could stop them from being apart but she always was so hesitant. She looked up at him worried, “What’s wrong?” Troy reorganized his face into a smile, “nothing at all,” he leaned in and kissed her lightly on the lips as time froze and he was swept away into happiness but it ended all to soon as she pulled away.
    He looked at her shock written into his face. Caydn stood up looking at her shoes “I’m sorry… I thought I… I didn’t mean to…” tears were falling from her face onto the worn out shoes and leaves that littered the forest floor. Suddenly she tore off into the woods running, her shadow fading from view. Troy pulled himself together and ran after her “Caydn, wait!” He found her ten minutes later crying into her hands her body shaking violently. “Caydn!” She looked up surprised at him the misery etched into her face. “Caydn, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to hurt you,”
    “You shouldn’t be sorry Troy you really shouldn’t be I should be for doing this to you.”
    “Caydn what do you mean? If you don’t like me… I can understand, I’m not the kind of guy girls usually want to be with,” He looked down at his lanky body and grimaced
    “I like you Troy, I really do, I think I love you its just that I… I can’t… I thought I could…” she looked at her knees
    “What are you talking about Caydn, I don’t understand what you’re trying to say, you love me but you can’t be with me?”
    “Troy,” she sounded as if she was pleading for him to understand
    “Then what is it?”
    “It’s Bane.”
    “Who?”
    “Bane is my boyfriend or he was at least…” Her face faltered and she began crying again.
    “I… I didn’t know but are you with him or not… I need to know.” She looked at him tears running like rivers down her cheeks and pity flooded his system, somewhere deep inside he knew the answer and he didn’t want to hear it. He had pushed this on her, he had kissed her, he didn’t even think to question her, he did this to her. “Never mind Caydn I shouldn’t have said that, it was wrong…”
    “No, it wasn’t I should have told you earlier, this has tormented me since I first started to like you and I knew something would happen. Bane is my past; I have no chose but to except it … because he can’t come back.” Caydn couldn’t control herself she was shaking so much and the tears wouldn’t stop. Troy sat down beside her and wrapped his arms around her into a secured hug. She tried to say something else but her words were choked by her sobs.
    “You don’t have to tell me now Caydn,” Troy was attempting to calm her, how could this night get any worse.
    “No, I have to tell you now you need to know,” her voice seemed strong again but you could hear the shakiness within it “ Before the destruction of the Spring a group of men went to protect the city… few came back…I think Bane was… I think he was killed…” her voice wavered and fell silent. Troy hugged her tighter and sat there with her letting it all sink in. Anger rose in his body as he once again realized that he had put her through this and that it must have torn her apart inside to be asked to do this so soon after her loved one’s death, he was sick of himself. They just sat there under that tree until Caydn’s crying stopped and was replaced by soft breathing. She had fallen asleep. As carefully as he could Troy lifted her up and carried her to their site and laid her on his sleeping bag near the fire. Bringing the fire to a warm and steady heat he sat up against a tree and watched her sleep soundly the firelight dancing across her face once more. He closed his eyes and drifted off into sleep as well.

    Troy awoke the next morning with a stiff neck and a groggy head. Caydn was sitting up on the sleeping bag looking at him. He couldn’t tell what she was thinking her face was blank. Shaking his head and rubbing his eyes didn’t help she was still staring at him. He was about to open his mouth to say something but she stood up and walked away towards the river. Baffled by her manner he followed her running to catch up. Caydn was sitting by the river’s edge twirling a blade of grass between her fingers. Troy sat down beside her about to say something to her when she spoke, “ Do you think I was being stupid about last night… how I reacted?” Troy was tentative in answering not wanting to say the wrong thing but she took the silence as an answer “I was wasn’t I, I shouldn’t have acted that way.”
    Choosing his words carefully he spoke slowly thinking before he spoke hoping it didn’t sound to clichéd “Caydn you loved him and that doesn’t mean your stupid that means you’re a real person and that you cared for someone deeply. Any man would be lucky to have a woman as compassionate as you.” She looked at him her eyes brimming with tears, he must have said something wrong “I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to upset you… please don’t cry… I’m sorry.” He was stuttering barely able to say what he meant. She leaned in closer tears trickling down her face as their lips met. Her hand brushed his cheek and it sent his nerves into a tingling dance. Unlike last night this kiss was passionate, it meant something.
    They pulled apart and Caydn spoke softly “ Troy, last night you made me realize that you’re the one I want to be with. I don’t want to be sad or miserable I want to be happy I want you.” Troy couldn’t believe his ears as Caydn told her that she loved him not Bane but would that change if he really were alive. She leaned in to kiss him again her lips brushing his cheek sweeping onto his lips. Pushing aside that thought Troy enjoyed the moment as he held her tight not wanting to let her go.
