Extras in PW

The online version of Publisher’s Weekly has a lovely article about the Uglies trilogy and Extras. It contains unexpected revelations about the origins of my ideas for the book.

It also turns out that the series has sold more than a million copies, which is pretty bubbly. Thanks to all of you who made your friends and family read it. No book sells that many copies without word of mouth.

  3. I didn’t know Uglies has sold over a million. That’s amazing! I mean, I see a lot of people aroud school with a copy, but I didn’t know it was that popular. Congratulations!

    I found it really amusing that someone asked if you know Paris Hilton. Many lawlz.

  7. The Bologna Book Fair is every year (March or April) in Bologna, Italy. It’s where all the young people’s publishers get together and sell international rights to each other. So I was there to meet my current foreign publishers and drum up new ones.

    The meals there are amazing, as you’d expect from an Italian city with food named after it.

  10. =D yup go me, i recomended that book in my reading classes and almost everyone read it. and of course i made my friends read it and they ended it up wanting a copy haha.

  19. Bri-la i will soo join your angry mob… i want that movie wahh!!! lol i checked recently and they still dont have a cast what are they gonna do make the people special affects (oh wait that would pretty much be animation :)) but still they should have more info out about it…

  22. i told my friend about your books scott, and she still hasnt read any of them! she wants to read peeps, but i dont want to lend her mine. i have another friend that read the first chapter of peeps, but thats it. my friends dont really read that much, well amanda does but she is the one that wants to read peeps but i wont lend her mine. after all, she got me hooked on another author and i spent $40 on her books, amanda can spend a little on scotts.

  29. I am currently trying to get two of my friends(both are female) to read the UGLIES trilogy. One has already agreed that she will try it out after end of year exams(which is around 17 November) and the other is in the pending stage. I will not give up! When I tried to introduce it to my younger brother(13yrs old this yr), he seems not to be very interested. Maybe he judged the book by its cover…though I LOVE the covers of the trilogy and EXTRAS! =^0^=

    I really enjoyed the ideas you had behind writing another book set in the Uglies world. I also loved your quote of:
    “Also, there are good reasons why science fiction books tend to come in series: it’s a waste to set up a whole world if you’re only going to use it once.”
    I’m so going to take that out of context and just quote ‘it’s a waste to set up a whole world if you’re only going to use it once’ constantly!!!

    I am even MORE excited for Extras now.

    lol i have forced my friends to read Midnighters and Uglies (the whole trilogy). ^_^ whenever i find a great book, i read it, take it to school, and shove it in their faces. XD

  43. fawesome. i, for one, annoy all my friends to death by forcing them to read good books. really, they’ve got no initiative without me.

    and the school librarian actually once asked me to make a list of what new books she should buy. i’m like, peeps, the water mirror, the haunting of alaziabel cray, anything else by scott westerfeld, and amelia atwater-rhodes.
    and she bought them all!
    it made me feel really special.

    and in fact, right now my mom is reading the last days after much needling.

    and when are we gonna get information on this phantom airship historical fiction edwardian slovakian austria-hungary trilogy coming out?????????must know obbsessive details to lord over friends (like the fact i knew extras was gonna exist months before them. in fact, without me they still might not know. sigh. hopeless.)

  44. every day i say ___ days till october 2nd!!! and my mom says, what that new scott westerfeld book? she hasnt even read any of his books, but i talk about them so much that she knows when extras is comming out!

  47. Okay, I seriously need to start slowing down when I read a book for the first time.

    I’ve been re-reading the Uglies trilogy over the past few days, and I’ve come to realize that I remember NOTHING about Specials. Like, zilch.
    I have this bad habit where I tend to rush through new books just to see what happens without really reading everything. Which kind of takes away the whole point of reading in the first place.
    And now I’m discovering a whole bunch of new stuff that I never read (or read about and forgot)in the book.

  50. WOOT FOR RE-READING!!! Im re-reading the Uglies trilogy 2!!! (oh ya high five Tiera) and ive been noticing a lot of things i never noticed before about the books. like in uglies “It was Shay. She was Pretty” and then Pretties “It was Shay. She was Special”. I have (re)gotten through Specials yet though. And also i noticed the running story of the princess in Pretties and how it perfectly worked with the plot. and all i hav to say is: SCOTT-LA YOU ARE (re)BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!:D
