1) Slang terms you want defined.
2) Cliques you remember from the books.

And (pretty please) try to limit repetition of the same words! (That means you have to read the earlier comments. But you can always use Find on the thread, you know.)

  4. my friends & i were talking about this all day while we skipped class (but it was for stage crew, so it wasn’t breaking the rules while we killed time in the auditorium) and we were making up cliques:
    The Partiers-throw the parties, but aren’t part of the boring partygoers who are there just to be there
    The Jammers-try to ruin ideas of pretty and make more worrk for the Pretty Makers
    The UnSpecials-they want to be special, but they aren’t

    except maybe how mag-levs work
    and wardens, like what’s their job exactly?

    and why didn’t they ever fix the silent bridge?

  6. They designed the bridge to allow sneaky Uglies to look in, as in our modern world advertising actually can benefit from naysayers. If they want Uglies to be envious, show them what they missed.

  16. i don’t know that i have any slang that i don’t understand.
    but for some reason whenever they talk about eating dehydrated food it makes me want ramen noodles.
    and swedish meatballs.

    and i’ve always been curious as to where exactly in the US [or north america, or whatever] tally lives. the way it’s described i usually get the idea that it’s by the east coast somewhere.

    and how flash tattoos work. because i never quite understood how they could move. i mean, i understand that they are timed with the heartbeat, but how does it move? i wouldn’t imagine that they’re anything like our tattoos that are ink in your skin.

  25. Ok Im posting this for my friend, she’s always wanted to know the answer to this question. What would happen if an Ugly got preggers just before her 16th birthday. Would she have an abortion type thing or would the surgeons make her wait to have the operation or is their away to give her the operation without harming the child.

    Also I’d like to know more about how the Rusties came to an end and how some people survived it.

  28. i wanna know more bout special circumstances……like, what on earth do all those specials do all day? all year, for that matter? i mean, do they devote their entire life to hunting down the smoke and keeping track of uglies? and having disdain toward randoms? plus how do the specials become specials, like does a person on the pretty committie do it? but then they would know about specials. is there a special who turns people into specials? but then how was the first special turned special? turned themselves into a special? or was it like a group of people who did it on each other. but who was the first special? how many specials are there, for that matter?

  32. I don’t think anyone said the radical Honesty clique, and I’m not sure if this counts, but the Tally Youngblood cults?
    And i think it would be interesting to learn more about the city that housed the Smoke in Specials, I can’t remember that name right now… But anyways, they sound really cool there, very different.
    And some descriptions of the technology would be happy-making.

  33. Um guys, doesn’t “PadThai” just mean… “Pad Thai”? As in the Thai noodle dish? Because that seemed obvious to me…

    I would like to know about how the operation was established. obviously it had to be someone’s idea, and then it had to be developed, fine-tuned, and finally made main stream, but what happened between rusty downfall and bubble-headed days? How did EVERYONE start using the operation? Where did it start? How did enough people honestly think it was a good idea to get it mainstream? You know, all of those kinds of things.

  37. hmmm….bunch of comments. even with warning up top am too lazy to read all of them. this is what happens when i go into writing coma for several hours. but hey, WRITING IS FUNZ!

    i don’t really have any specific things i want defined, but i’d like to see explinations of some of the technology and stuff that’s sort of taken for granted by them, and you have to sort of infer.
    like, pings and the rings and stuff, and (like person above) the whole in the wall, ect.
    i mean, most of it’s pretty obvious, but aside from that i can’t really think of anything.
    most of the slang is just sort of obvious, i think, at least from context…..i dunno, it’s been a while since i read Uglies…

    I know that generally everyone can figure out the reputation economy in Extras, but some people have trouble and it IS confusing at first. So

    Clearly define merits, reputation economy, face rank (along with how it works), feed, etc. possibly with an explanation of how it all fits together.

    that would be good. i never really understood how it produced things. magic wouldn’t be a very good explanation.
    and how do the eye screens work? because i was trying to explain it to my friend ealier, and i wasn’t doing a very good job.

  43. um well, first off, why are reputation bombers called reputation bombers, if they’re making face rank increase. i mean, bombing is destruction, isn’t it? it’s making people more popular, so why would it be bombing?

    and then, why does it seem like in extras, everyone is like japanese and speaks japanese, whereas in the other books, everyone spoke english? or are there like different parts of pretty town? like, is it divided according to what language you speak?

    and this has nothing to do with it, but could surge monkeys get like wings and stuff? i mean, since they have such drastic surge? or is there a limit to the amount you can get?

    how do they get a high face rank? is it only by kicking, or looks, or ways to get peoples’ attention, or is it kind of like today where if you have more money, or in their case, credits, you get higher face?

    since like singapore still exists, is the whole world still the same? like, did any plates shift?

    sorry, some of these have nothing to do with what you asked, but I was curious…

    I have a funny story about something my mom did.
    Theres was this peach and mango drink my mom had and my little sister was trying it. she asked “Whats it called?” and my mom said “Its called Fuzz.” and i look at the label and notice it says Fuze and i say to my mom “Fuzz?” and she goes “Yeah.” and i look at her and i start cracking up. she was being so serious. She looked confused why i was questrions her and i go “Mom! It says Fuse not Fuzz!” Maube you had to be there but it was Ha. Lar. E. Ous!

    The slang isn’t too difficult, but I was confused as to how the hovercam’s vision over your own worked.

  68. More of how everything works. All the common slang like icy and bubbly. More about what it’s like for littlies and uglies growing up. What types of things they do and if they go to school before they take classes as an ugly, and what exactly they learn (Like what subjects).
    How long are you a new pretty? When do you turn into a middle pretty and then into a late pretty? Which of those stages are you in when you have kids? Do they get married anything like how we do today? before the mind rain did they have any type of religion? When you’re a middle pretty do you choose what job you will have from a lot of jobs or is it based on something?
    Maybe some drawings and descriptions of all the technology like hoverboards, interface rings, wallscreens, the hole in the wall, smart matter, eyescreens.
    Some descriptions or maps of how far it was to the Smoke, to Diego, etc. More about what Special Circumstances did.
    Are the people in movies and the people who make music famous in any way or are they just liker regular people?
    Has Tally’s city always been different or is it just because of the Specials? Does every city have Specials of some type? I know that in Diego they mentioned things about what Tally’s city did, but did they have any type of special government?
    How different are the cities? How many are there? Are there still cities all over the world or are they basically just in nice areas now, like the coasts and warm areas?
    More about Ugly dorms and how they work? Are they each like their own school? Do people from other dorms generally ever meet? What do dorm uniforms look like? Is that all uglies wear?
    What do Pretties wear? Are their clothes anything like today or completely different?
    Explain more how the Special gray silk outfits look. I never really could get a picture of them in my head.
    Where do middle pretties live? Out in the burbs with late pretties and crumblies or in New Pretty Town with the new pretties? Or some other section all together? And where do they work? Does anyone work in New Pretty Town or is it all electronic and residential.
    Are Crumblies and late pretties the same?
    A map of Tally’s entire city, from Uglyville to New Pretty Town to the burbs to the factory belt.
    Explain how party towers look and how hoverstruts look.

    Well, that’s a lot now, I’ll be done. Just please explain everything in really good detail.

I think it would be really interesting to learn more about what you did after you left the pretty stage and the other life stages. Also like the history of Special Circumstances. Annnd (lol) just things about the city, like rules and the “government”. Just Tally’s world in gerneral. lol. (oh I couldn’t think of any words)

I’m curious, did you come up with the idea of the oil virus based on something that could really happen? How about Smart Matter? That’s interesting as well. And FAMILIES! How come families don’t really happen in the Pretty world, well, before the mind-rain. Like, nobody stays with their parents.

    How long are you a pretty until a middle pretty and then a crumbly? How do they get jobs? Does everyone get a job? Do only middle pretties have jobs?’

    i’d like to know what belly sensors, crash bracelets, and interface rings/cuffs would look like. because i always have a hard time picturing them. and since the belly sensors clip to a bellybutton ring, does that mean everyone has their bellybutton pierced?

    and mikala-wa has a good question. i never thought about that before, but now that it’s mentioned, i’d like to know.

  78. I’m fairly certain that most of the slang terms and phrases have been posted already here and in the previous thread. I just wanted to impart two things to Scott: First, of course, I can’t wait to see the end result; and second, if you have yet to see BALL OF FIRE starring Barbara Stanwyck, you must. Seven professors aim to define “slang” for their work-in-progress encyclopedia and end up in quite wacky situations. It’s a hilarious and fun movie, with plenty of word play and shiny things. 🙂

    What do hovercams look like and how are feeds made?

    How does an eyescreen work and how can you look in the corner of your eye to look at the things on it? wouldn’t your eye just move?

    Describe the “perfect” face and maybe the exact details of the operation.

    What has Tally been doing inbetween specials and extras?

    There is a girl in my class who has the name Netallia and goes by Netta
    her mom has the same name as my mom
    we’re both in all of the same classes but she’s in choir not band so she has Spanish the period before mine and she sits at the desk I do in Spanish
    we both take soccer and dance
    Both of our moms freak out when it storms
    And we both once thought that we were such heavy sleepers that some dude could come rape us and we we never find out and have no way to explain being pregnant to our parents (yes, I’m weird)
    but yet we’re really not good friends
    I mean we talk to each other but not very often

    I’ve also talked a lot with my other Uglies fan friends about maybe when they go through puberty, uglies get surgery to sort of turn off their reproductive systems, and then as middle pretties get surgery to turn them back on. I dunno, just a theory.

    Um, yeah so I usually post like 50 gazillion times a day but I won’t be able to as much because I am like buried in homework and working on my writing and softball starts soon and so does track(grrr) so I’m in wayyyyyyyyy over my head and won’t have as much time, but I’ll still be here, just not as much/

    Jordan – A drone is a hovercam. Like the one that was protecting that dude in the Armory in Specials. So yeah. Its a hovercam but different in some way… I’m not sure how exactly, apart from the one in Specials could shoot foam xD

    What does a typical room or apartment look like?

    How do they have babies? i doubt pretties got pregnant.

    What about diego? what is the deal with them, what is there president like?
    i’ve gotta know if tally has kids with david. and what happened to her parents?
    how did they make recyclable clothes?
    if they are all pretty, and they all look the same, then how does tally know who paris is at the party?
    what is the deal with a carbon allowance?
    what will become of the community in a hundred years?
    do uglies have grades when they go to school?
    what happens if they have bad grades?
    i know there is japanese…does the russian language exsist? german?
    what part of the world is tallys city in?

    It is obvious that there is some sort of dictator ship going on in tallys world(prior aya-las world) so why? why would someone make themselves responsible for the planet, if there was no credit?
    i mean stalin did it all for the credit and control but what does this ‘ruler'(s) get out of it all?

  133. I know they’ve already been mentioned, but the Neo Foodies really intrigued me :0 Seriously, that part of the book where they’re all drinking the floating cloud of salmon…very cool.

    Also was there any climate change things that happened after the mind rain? Religeon? Discrimination? Just generally interested in how the societies worked after that.
    And could the smokies reach places like Australia and New Zealand? Were there any people there in during the Prettytime?

  135. EXACTLY! if all the rusties died out except a few, they’d all band together, and so the ones on the larger continents would survive. but us peeps all isolated on little islands would not. so if everyone dies on the little islands, who would even know they existed after a few generations?

    And one more question! Could we have some sort of chronological table of events? Like:

    2014: Some stuff goes down.
    2016: More stuff happens.
    2054: Somebody dies.
    2102: Something else happens.

    that’s a good question, bout how they got to islands and stuff like that. maybe if wore comes to worse, then they like use hovercars?? tho the metal in the ocean would be WAY 2 far down.
    and country music could totally be ugly (k, i know that sounds weird. i mean ugly as in ages 12-16, not ugly as in like bad or disgusting…if u know what i mean. plz say u do?). i mean, like montgomery gentry has some awesome songs, trace adkins, rascal flatts (ooo some good songs there), carrie underwood, jamie o’neal, stuff like that. ooo there’s a lot of songs w/good beats. they could totally be ugly-ish. =P

    What is the name of Tally’s city? Aya’s? Diego is the only city in the books that’s been given a name. Is it the only city with a name? If it is, why?

  185. yeah, the special hoverboards can go faster. plus, the cutters’ hoverboards have lifting fans on them, so they don’t have to follow rivers and railways and stuff.

    I would personally use it as a computer process that could be completed in an eyescreen – but would still take 10 minutes or so to use (to force the person to meditate on their question).

    This question’s really been bugging me. Why was Diego unlike other cities in the sense that they didn’t have a river dividing New Pretty Town and Uglyville, and why did their city ‘evolve’ I guess you could say, differently than Tally’s? Was it because of location, or was it because of leaders? Why were they so willing to help out the Smokies?

    Another question I just thought of. Natural pretties are mentioned a few times, and I was just wondering if their version of a natural pretty would be someone who looked like they had the operation, but didn’t, or would they look pretty-er than… a pretty? Sorry if that’s confusing.

    It was also mentioned in Uglies that the operation didn’t work on some people. Why is that? Was it their body structure, or was it something else?

    Okay, so American schooling in general sounds a lot different than UK schooling…
    In America, each year in school you learn all year and then based on your grades (A, B, C, D or E) you pass or fail that grade.
    You need a 67% or higher (i think) to pass a grade, which is a high d. Once you hit middle school/junior high (12-13) school is a bit more difficult, but still easy enough to pass. And then in high school (grades 9-12) you have lots of classes and all your credits that you receive from passing those classes with good grades adds up to your graduation.
    Going to an American college or university is difficult. There are state schools, private schools, Ivy League schools (such as Princeton, Yale and Harvard), among many other schools specialized for acting, the culinary arts, fashion design, or whatever.
    For applying in general, a person usually has to fill out an application which includes writing essays on certain topics most times, along with taking the SAT or some other standardized tests whose scores are taken into account to judge your intelligence ( a bit unfair for those poor people who do not do well on tests =/ ). Your GPA is also reviewed, which is on a 4.0 scale usually. The higher your GPA, the more your college of choice is likely to accept you or give you scholarships and whatnot. Other things are also considered such as involvement with student government, community service, and participation in athletics.
    Plus the costs are usually INSANE. Much too expensive in my eyes….

  202. Oh and yea, we have to get good grades and past the SAT’s (and in new york we have to pass regiants exams) we don’t go on if we fail classes. Luckily im not failing anything…haha. But colleges here mostly look at your Grade Point Average and what activities you have done. The more well rounded you are, the more schools like you…along with whether your good at what you do.

  205. u should really look at Notre Dame, u know, in indiana? it’s SOOO cool and the campus is really pretty (tho the south quad is MUCH better than the south quad. lol) we went there during the summer during the family dorm thing, and like, it was really cool, and its really nice, and….k, i’ll shut up right now. but u should really consider it. tho if u are considering it, u should try NOT to stay in alumni hall, cuz they’re really vain, cuz we saw a guy wearing this tshirt saying: “Alumni hall–the center of the universe.” see? alumni hall and dillon hall (my dad’s dorm house) were at a constant battle. they had like this fire alarm war, where a student from one house went over 2 the other house and pulled the fire alarm, like in the winter, so the students in the dorm they pulled the fire alarm on had 2 stand out in the cold. so yea, alumni hall is evil….of course dillon hall had a banner saying “Dillon hall…for (i’m not sure of the exact number…) x years the smartest, toughest, and humblest of them all.” so yea, they r pretty funny.
    the long of the short of it is that i think u should look into notre dame. it’s really cool (and the food is REALLY good. in the south quad, anyways).
    sry bout the long thing bout Notre Dame, it’s just a cool place. ya if u havent guessed i’m hoping 2 go there 4 college.

  232. I’m amazingly bored. I want to dye my hair red, or a really dark brown, but my parents won’t let me. Grr. But I can’t do anything with my hair in terms of cutting it for another week or so, since I’m in the school play, and my hair doesn’t curl like they want it to when it’s short. So, lucky me, I get to go to school on Friday with my hair in curlers. There’s a show on Saturday too, but I have a riding lesson that morning, so I have no idea how I’m going to do that. I think it might be rather hard to wear a riding helmet with curlers in my hair.

    Besides, my evil little pony Peluche might eat my hair. xD But still, I love her. I don’t think I’m riding her this weekend though. I think I’m going to be riding this pretty horsie. [So Yesterday.]) so ya. and tm when i got 2 school he will probably aske i called him. and ya. so not good.

  249. sorry this is a bit late but thanks jess-la and t-rex in england we have A,B,C,D,E,F,G and even U for ungradadble which is reeeeeaaallly bad if u get that (its like 10% or around there)

    in England it doesn’t matter if you fail every class possible until you get to year 11 when you are 15 or 16 where if you dont get a B or higher in the subjects you want to do in sixth fprm college (years 12 and 13 ((when you are 17 and 18)) ) then you are normally not allowed to get into sixth form unless it is a really special case when you were just off a b cuz ur teachers know you have really bad exam stress or something.

    Then you can apply to university where they give you specified grades you will have to get if you want to get into their schools (only certain ones like cambridge and oxford are where you need to do a general knowledge entrance exam as they are sooo popular to get in) The you can stay for 3, 4 or even longer amount of years at university (it depends if you want to get a degree or a phd (docterant (gives you the title of Dr. aswell as better jobs usually)) ) Universities usually cost around £5000 a year on average depending on what course or what university you go to.

    then you go onto jobs…
    oh also you can do apprenticeships at any level where you work while you learn if you are not good at exams (you can even get paid whilst you learn!)

  259. hmm…. i don’t know if it’s illegal to prank. on new years though me and my friends did a really huge prank on the rest of our friends. it was hilarious. see there were like 10 of us in my friends basement and one of my friends (we will call her a) was texting this guy she likes all night instead of hanging out with all of us. and b (girl who threw the party) was not to happy about it. and then c (a’s best friend) was texting a lot too. and so we decided we would *67 the call and pretend we were the guy’s “girl friend” (he didn’t really have one but we convinced a that he did.) that a liked and so she answers the phone and i can’t really say some of the stuff we said cuz i have to admit it was kinda bad. lol. but they had no clue whatsoever and the entire time we were in the same basement together. the prank went on for 3 hours. and then finally we came out and told them that it was us all along. and we were like kinda freaked out because c gets really really upset and emotional really easily and so we were like debating whether we should tell them or not but then they started calling the guy who a likes leaving messages on his phone so we decided we had to. it was pretty hilarious though. and c ended up being fine. she was just shocked. and a couldn’t believe it.

    nope i’m not. wish i was. i don’t get spring break till next wednesday after this one. but guess what!!! i’m completely and 100% made up in math!!! 😀 😀 😀 yay me!!! now all i have to do is art!! yay!! yay!!! yay!!!! hehe. sorry. i’m a little overjoyed. finally feeling like i’m not drownding in homework. once again i must say…YAY ME!!! 😀 😀 😀

    and ya know what else!! it’s 69 degrees out!!! 😀 that’s the warmest it’s been since fall! which means spring is finally almost here! and i lovesssss lovesssssss lovesssssssss spring! best time of year! …and i will be driving in about a month!! 😀

    -summer vaca-about 3 months long.
    -fall break(end of quarter 1)-5 days…that’s including the weekend.
    -christmas vaca-2 weeks long
    -spring break(end of quarter 3)-i think 5 days including the weekend.
    -then a few random holidays and teacher workdays inbetween all those.

    you are lucky that you get seperate breaks for half terms(that’s end of quarter right?) and holidays. in the u.s. they combined them. and make them half as long as yours. very. very. not. fair.

  275. Our spring break doesn’t start until next Thursday. We have Friday off. I’m acctually not too stressed at the moment. Which, considering I have a vocab test on Friday, a French test on Friday, a Clara Barton costume thing that I need by Tuesday, two paragraphs for science due Friday, a biopoem about Clara Barton due next Thursday, a flip book about the Civil War due next Thursday, an orchestra concert tomorrow night, the school play Friday and Saturday, riding lesson on Saturday, strike for the play and cast party on Sunday, is very surprising. I just have one question, maybe someone can help me. Okay, so for the play, I need my hair loosely curled, so I’m coming to school with curlers in on Friday. No problem there. But I have another performance on Saturday night, and I need my hair curled then, but I have a riding lesson beforehand, and the curlers won’t fit under my helmet. I’m considering just having my friend come over and use a curling iron right before I have to leave, but I don’t know. Any suggestions?

    Hm. I should go work on my homework. Maybe. I dunno. Eh. Whatever.

    not five.
    we get off in the begining of june and start back up at the end of august/begining of september.
    aside from that the longest break we have is two weeks for christmas/new years. then spring break, at about a week long.
    then it’s just a few days here and there. teacher inservices, records days, etc.

    And, a note: for those of you that love this series, the new book Skinned is a GREAT book and set in a world much like the Uglies series; it was even praised by our dear Scott. I definitely recommend reading it!
