GRCT Interview

Last weekend I did a long interview with Girls Read Comics Too about the Uglies manga. Devin Grayson, who’s writing the manga’s scripts, joined me and said some pretty interesting things.

And because links to interviews make for a boring blog post, I give you Croy, the manga version!

Note that this is untoned, and has no speech bubbles yet (they were spoilery!) but it does show you the fiery enthusiasm that is CROY. He’s the dude in panels 1, 2, and 4. And you can tell that he is CROY.

The girl with pig-tails is obviously Shay, the girl with shorter hair is Astrid Astrix, and the white-haired dude is Zane.

Wait, isn’t Zane’s hair pitch black?

Ah, but don’t forget, they are all still uglies at this point! (Heh.)

Okay, Fan Art Friday is in two more days. w00t!

And as a bonus, next Tuesday I’ll be posting lots of photos from this photoshoot . . .

    I like how the characters don’t look too manga-y…because I would hate that.

    And I love the choice of the name Astrid…it’s a real name but really uncommon…at least nowadays. So it’s really cool to put in a futuristic book. Except I might get it confused with Astrix 🙂

    Astrid is one of my favorite names! And I love the art preview.

    Oops. I meant Astrix, the character who appears in the novels as well. She was a Crim back in the ugly days. (Remember, the manga starts six months before the events of Uglies.)

    Bloo-wa the Kitty:
    Yeah, in b&w manga, white usually means blond hair. And remember, this hasn’t been toned yet, so it might be less white in the final version.

  23. PEOPLE! The photoshoot is probably for Goliath’s cover. Aleck IS on the front…which would explain the photo scott-la has posted.

    I’m from Italy and I read Leviathan last week. I would like to thanks You ’cause I loved It. I don’t know more about steampunk but a friend of mine is interesting in it, so I read about your book in a italian blog and I gift a copy to her. She thanks me and I thank You so much. You’re a really good writer, that story it’s amazing and I like your way to write so much. I hope one day to write a book that inspire people like yours.
    I and my friend are just disapponted that the second book of the Leviathan’ saga it’s not published in Italy yet 🙁

  32. I must say….. If Alek starts wearing scarves on his face then you are going to have a lot of fangirls (and fanguys) wearing scarves on their faces. And I don’t think anyone wants that.

  33. Meep! I can’t wait for the photos.
    Just an idle question….I recently moved to the UK, and was wondering a) if Goliath will have a different release date over here and b) if there will be any Goliath tourage on this side of the Atlantic. I hope the date doesn’t change, because I don’t think I’ll even be able to survive this next month 🙁

  36. How can a kid have white hair? I can see if their albino or really blonde, but white? But I guess a lot of manga characters have wierd-colored hair…

    I definitely thought Alek right away when I saw the picture.
    Super excited to read the manga. I am new to reading manga myself. My first was Fullmetal Alchemist, which I LOVE, so I really appreciated the FMA/Leviathan Fan Art from one of your previous posts.

  43. it looks awesome, but where’s David ? Hope david in the manga.
    Hope they do not pick models from the above photos shoot to play David, shay or tally in the Ugies movies. Models are good for still pictures, but not acting. Like jennifer lawrence is very good pick and fit for Katniss in the hunger games movies. Please Uglies movie casting already.

    Also, Scott, I was writing a paper for my AP history course and was on a part about how we should be careful what choices we make because it will affect what people think of us in the future…I realized later that I ended up typing something about Uglies and the Rusties without even realizing it XD I blame you.

  47. Wow, I actually LIKE this manga, or anime, or whatever it is. I really like the style, very realistic, unlike the crap I see when I walk by the manga section in Borders. This may just be a comic that won’t hurt my eyes to read!
