Cosplay Contest!

So you may remember this post about the Leviathan series cover shoot. Well, all those aviator caps and goggles from the shoot have just been sitting around, and my publisher doesn’t need them anymore. So we decided to have a FaceBook contest and give them away, along with signed copies of my books!

Here’s what you can win in the Show Us Your Steampunk contest:

First Prize: Deryn’s flying goggles and hat featured on the cover of BEHEMOTH and GOLIATH, a signed set of the Leviathan trilogy, AND a full set of the UGLIES series!

Second Prize: Alek’s flying googles featured on the cover of LEVIATHAN and GOLIATH and a signed set of the Leviathan trilogy!

Third Prize: A signed set of the Leviathan trilogy!

So what do you have to do to enter? Just go here and upload a photo of your steampunk-costumed self, holding one of my books. That’s it!

You don’t have to be dressed like a character from Leviathan, any airship pirate or pith-helmeted adventurer will do. (You do have to have a FaceBook account, however.) You have until December 7, 2011 to enter!

And even if you don’t feel like dressing up, you can always check out the costumes and vote for your favorites. Here’s that link again.

In other news, I am back from tour and will be starting up Fan Art Friday again THIS VERY FRIDAY.

My tour does have one more US stop, of course, here in New York City.

Saturday, October 22
Noon-2PM

BOOKS OF WONDER
18 West 18th Street.
New York, NY 10011

I’ll be appearing with Maryrose Wood, Jeff Hirsch, Sarah Beth Durst, Jon Skovron, Elizabeth Levy, and Mordicai Gerstein.

You can also order a copy of Goliath from Books of Wonder and I’ll sign it for you on Saturday.

And to finish up, here’s a lovely Goliath fan-trailer made by Darklighter152.

  1. So wait. I’m not gonna do it or anything, but if the entries are only pictures, then the winner is judged on…. how they look….. or their personality? Or eenie meenie miney mo? {I prefer the last method on tests (: }

It is a pretty good idea, though, to give away the souvenirs to fans in this contest. It’s pretty generous.

  2. Oh no, i missed the part with “holding a book”, but already submitted a picture. I love this contest, it’s a great idea.
So~ shooosh new picture with book and costume

    Greetings from germany !

  3. Is there a deadline? I plan to enter but I just wanted to make a few additions to my costume. I don’t want to turn in the picture too late >.<

  4. Aww….I could never pull off an epic steampunk costume…..

Btw Scott-la, you need to post more on your FB page. We’re so much better than Twitter!

  5. ……ah….that’s kind of unfortunate….I want those goggles but I don’t exactly have a costume or any way of making one….still best of luck to everyone else.

  6. i have a dr. barlow costume for halloween! i wish i had facebook now… but i would never use it after this 😛
    but YAY! FAFs are back!!!

  7. I so want to enter the cosplay contest, but so many people are so photogenic and have such nice costumes, not sure if I would be able to own up to them. I’ll probably try anyway, though.
I’ll be seeing you think week-end Scott!

  8. I long for Deryn’s goggles and hat, but I don’t look like any of the characters, and anyway, isn’t it a wee bit dumb to put pictures of yourself, even anonymously, on the internet? Anyone can see it and recognize you in real life, and then you’re forever known as “The Kid That Had The Crappy Costume That One Time”, or something like that. Not exactly a desirable moniker, is it?

  9. I dare someone to joke enter wearing a Camp Halfblood outfit… (I would do it myself, but I don’t have a Facebook account, as previously mentioned.)

And didn’t John Green make a video about the function of rules in society? I’m not sure, but that sounds like the kind of thing he’d talk about. 😉

  10. And to those of us who do not have a FaceBook!
*Crawls into pathetic ball and weeps*

I’d really like to enter, though.
Not that I’d have any money to spend trying to put stuff together.
Who knows, I’d probably have a few stuff lying around…

  11. Do u think doing cosplay is still cosplaying if u buy the costumes. Is making them yourself better?|Well i was just thinking do you think somewhere in 2015 cosplay and anime conventions will simply die is it possible?|I have a new costume and totally want to go to a cosplay convention but cant find any scheuldes of when and where they are. Can anybody post a link to one of those schedules and tell me when and where the nearest one to Kentucky is?}

  12. @Dr Stuff: I KNOW! I was just going to throw on my ATBF Steampunk outfit, but there’s no point since I don’t have a Facebook.

Seriously. I dare someone to wear a Camp Half-Blood t-shirt, hold a PJatO book and take a photo. And then send it in. T’would be hilarious.

  13. I know this is really strangely random and has nothing to do with the topic but may i ask why there is a teeny tiny smiley face at the bottom of the page and how long has it been there? am i just blind? anyway i think its AWESOME!

  14. I will now bolt up the step And finally fix the rankings on my dress uniform. Word to the wise, Never use ribbon for the rankings on the sleeves. (it unravels)

  15. @Michelle-wa: That’s a wordpress thing. This site is powered by wordpress, and all wordpress sites have that tiny little smiley face at the very bottom of the page. No idea why. 😉

  16. I was gonna go to the signing this week but I was going with a friend for her birthday and she canceled last minute, and I made this costume and I think my mom forgot that I had asked her to take me, but now I have a use for my costume!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, that was a long sentence.

Also, Mr. Westerfeld, would it be much of a bother to write a series where people can tell that you are in costume and where there is a character that has light skin and brown hair (and is a girl)? Only because their are a lot of people with brown hair and light skin that like your books, but it’s very hard to dress up as someone because we don’t look like anyone. It would be extremely helpful. Thank you.

  17. wait, one more thought-my costume was for someone who wasn’t really steampunk, she was just a character. is that a problem? do i have to make a new costume? 🙁

  18. OHMIGOD! I’m being Barlow for halloween and I’m currently EXTRAORDINARILY bored (science homework blaaah) and learning German for Alek’s sake. (I know a bit and must expand my vocab so I can talk to Klopp and Bauer and Hoffman and people like that.) So that is why I’m OVERREACTING!!!!! 😉

  19. I dont have a facebook. Sad face. But i am gonna be deryn for halloween! But i am epicly short compared to deryn . Frustraited face!

  20. Well I have dark brown hari and medium skin, along with a bunch of cool old clothes lying around, so I could easily dress up as Lilt. Except, as I mentioned, I don’t have a facebook! *cries*

    Non-Facebook fans are people too!

  21. Um why am I only be able to see two costume entry’s because by the sounds of it at least five have done it all ready. Please someone help

  22. my costume was for someone who wasn’t really steampunk, she was just a character. is that a problem? do i have to make a new costume? i really have to know…

  23. wait…
you can’t enter it if you live in canada???
    that’s not fair!!!!!!!!!
I already started on my steampunk costume, but can i still enter the contest if i live in canada?????

  24. I have dressed up my HS character in a costume modeled after Starkiller’s Sith Stalker Armor, from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

Sorry about the lines, it was hand drawn on lined paper then scanned. I removed what I could.

  25. Ohno. I don’t think my costume is steampunky enough. Ah, well, maybe some other time… No facebook here either.
