Uglies Discussion Questions

Here are ten questions that I wrote to generate discussions about my book Uglies. Feel free to copy, adapt, distribute, and otherwise use these questions in any way you desire. (But it would be polite if you gave me credit.)

1. Have you ever had a friend like Peris, who abandoned your friendship after they moved away?

2. At first, did you hope Tally would get the operation? When did you change your mind? (Or did you?)

3. Have you ever found yourself trusting someone more or paying more attention to what they said not because they deserved it, but just because of their looks?

4. In what ways did Tally’s trip through the wild prepare her for what she learned in the Smoke?

5. Would you give up your ability to think independently in exchange for being happy, beautiful, perpetually healthy, and rich?

6. How did David see Tally differently than she saw herself?

7. If Shay could have gone back in time and never have met Tally, do you think she would?

8. Other than the pretty operation, what are the main differences between the pretty society and our own? (Are there any ways in which the pretty society is healthier than ours?)

9. To what extent did Tally decide her own fate, and how much did other people decide it for her?

10. The Rusty civilization collapsed because of its dependence on oil. In what ways is your lifestyle dependent on oil and gasoline? How easily would you survive if it all disappeared one day?

  1. You should get a really good director and make a movie for uglies via kickstarter! you post that you want to make a movie and its publically funded!

  2. I really just want to answer question two because this one really got to me. Before I red this book I was really bothered my looks, I always thought that people would judge me or like me by the way I looked. I even wanted to get a nose job and stuff like that because I was unhappy with my appearance.
When I first read the description of the pretties, I wanted Tally to turn into one, it seemed like the perfect life, being pretty, partying every day. But further on the book, I realized that Tally was already beautiful, she was just brainwashed into thinking she and the others were ugly. And by her description of the pretties, they pretty much look like aliens to me, with abnormal big eyes, small nose, and big mouth, so they turned ugly in my head.
Now I am happy with my self. I never had a good self esteem, I always told myself that looks weren’t everything in life, but never really believed that. After reading that book I am glad I am not perfect, I am happy to have the traces that are not perfectly symmetrical, but make me who I am!

  3. You may never read this, but that’s not what’s important. What I want to say is for me.
I just finished reading Uglies, Pretties, and Specials for the second time through. Tally’s stories is one of those that you aren’t just watching. You’re right there with her, and experience it all, and while Tally and I disagree on some fundamental things, I feel bonded to her in that character-reader way. When I read her manifesto minutes ago, I felt a chill in my spine. It was both ugly, pretty, and special; bubbly and icy and cured…it summed everything this story means to me up. Although I don’t agree with everything in the series, there are some lessons within it that I will always hold to me. I feel a…sad may not be the right word, but something-like-it-ness inside me at reaching the trilogy’s end. But, now as soon as I finish this post, I’ll go and start my re-reading of Aya’s tale, because I know it will lift me into yet another breath-taking, bubby, icy action that ultimately carries you to the pure ending. I look forward to every word.

    1) No, not really. I like Peris and all, but he’s way too fair-weather fan for me. Of course, he was pretty-minded…

    2) Not gonna lie, I did! I wanted to see her happy and partying, but as things began to reveal themselves, (like Peris being so…jerky about the pretty thing) I began to change my mind. Down with the operation!!!

    3) I believe we all have at some point or another, as human beings. But I’d like to believe that I eventually jerk myself out of it, when I observe their true selves.

    4) She not only learned survival skills, but it was the first time she recordedly recognized raw beauty. That was where her re-wiring started, in my opinion, even in the most subtle and beginner way.

    5) In the sense of, if I knew about the lesions, would I still get the operation? Heck no!

    6) He saw Tally without all the projections of the city. In short, just like Tally realizes at the conclusion of her narration, he sees only the real Tally.

    7) At one moment Specials, yes. But aside from that, absolutely not. Whether it was at a point where she was being driven by justice or anger or friendship, she was always being affected by Tally, and she wanted to keep that experience.

  4. 1. yes a couple of times I was even friend-dumped once 🙁 the didn’t even move away. okay never mind that’s what friend-dumped means.

    2. yes I thought Tally-wa was gonna get the operation but I changed my mind when she met special circumstances. she should have run off and not tell any 1. we would still have the old smoke and Zane-la would be alive

    3. no never

    4. she learned how to survive without the comforts of city limits

5.i want my own mind Scott-la (no offence)

    6. David always thought she was beautiful. not her looks or body (though he thought those were nice too) but her mind and personality

    7. no! yes? no. she might have been VERY jelous but Shay-la owes Tally-wa her life.

Scott-la please email me back I NEED to talk to you about the uglies series and why u did what u did. ZANE LIVES!!!!!

  5. Great goods from you, man. I have bear in mind your
stuff prior to and you’re simply extremely excellent. I really like what you have bought here, certainly like what you’re saying and the
way by which you are saying it. You’re making it entertaining and you still care for to keep it smart. I can not wait to read much more from you. This is actually a tremendous website.

  6. 1. Oh yes… I were the best friend of a boy in kindergarden, but then we went to different primary schools and everything changed… -.- we wanted to stay in contact with letters but it didn´t work because we were to young and our lives now too different. But now we´re again at the same school, but now we even don´t look at each other because its way to strange… *sighs*
    2. I always wanted Talle to get the operation because I always thought me to be in here position… I never had such good friends and love and so I would always decide for being pretty even if it means a bubblehead… and I always knew that Tally would find a way to remember who she really is and what happened to her.
    3. Idk…. maybe… but mostly it´s not about the looks of anyone, because I really listen to him/her. It´s more about their charisma… kinda difficult to discribe, but there are types of human, you can´t NOT love and being polite to them and really listen to them..
    4. I think it taught her really much about the wildness itself and so it was easier for her to switch from the city, where is everything she needs just by a clap from her hands and the wildeness, where she has to do everything herself…
    5. …idk… thought a lot about this… but most of time I think yes. I want fun and being really pretty and have lots of friend in a city where is everything about having fun… and later we kinda get our thinking back, when we want to work something and get kids and so on…
    6. David always saw, who she really was. He saw her soul, her identity. This what really maters, not her skin or her eyes only or everything else about her perfect (and later special) body. He just saw her.
    7. That´s a really though question. I think no, because if they hadn´t met, everything would have been different. Maybe Shay were not gone to Smoke and had get pretty and had a nice (boring) life. On the other hand she could have gone to Smoke and be happy with David or someone else… It´s a really hard question!
    8. It´s definatly healthier for the earth! In the Pretty age were much less people and they are more „friendly“ to the earth: all the stuff about the magnetic bords and cars and so on. No emmisions. I think it´s a much better society, because… idk because of everything!
    9. Most of time (except the ending of Pretty) everything was Tallys own decision: At the end of Ugly she knew what would happened and that she could decide other way, but she wanted to go to New Pretty Town to remember what happened and take the cure to see if it really works even if it could be VERY dangerous. At the end of Special she decided again by herself to leave Diego and everything to go with David and be the new „special circumstances“ of the nature to save the earth. Only at the end of Pretty it was like a trap, that Tally got into and Shay decided for her.
    10. My life depends very much on oil… driving car, clothes, plastics like the ones around computers and mobile phones… I´m quite sure, that I wouldn´t survive longer than an day… I´m much to trivial, but I like it and I want to live in the Pretty age but not in the years between Rusty and Pretty age…..

    xoxo Marie-la 😉 <3 <3

  7. My school is just like the book because most of the people in my school think there pretty then everyone and talk down on people. but now everyone talk about everyone and the people that ugly don’t care.

  8. 1. No I havent.
    2. Kind of, but then I grew annoyed at the fact they defined what “Beauty” is. Theres no such thing as being ‘Absolutley perfect”
    3. yes…unfortunately >.<
    4. Tally had to learn to live without too muchtechnology, and because Smoke didnt have what UglyVille and PrettyTown had, it prepared her.
    5. no, no, NO!

  9. At first, did you hope Tally would get the operation? When did you change your mind? (Or did you?)

I thought she wasn’t gonna to get the operation because i thought she was going to realize she pretty

  10. 1. yes i have , but now i dont worry about her anymore.
2yes i did and i never trusted peris because he abandoned her
3.yes but i dont do that anymore
4.it prepared her for depending on her self and trusting no one
    5no

  11. Have you ever found yourself trusting someone more or paying more attention to what they said not because they deserved it, but just because of their looks? sometimes

  12. Other than the pretty operation, what are the main differences between the pretty society and our own? (Are there any ways in which the pretty society is healthier than ours?)

    NO

  13. No I havent had friends who traded me like Peris when they moved away
    2. At first I wanted her to get the operation but reading on later when I found out that David liked Tally.
3.I have payed attention to someone who look cute.
4.It helped her prepare because she knew how to make a fire if she was stranded.
    5. I would rather be pretty happy and rich than think independently.
    6. Yes david see her a pretty person evwen though she seen herself as a useless ugly.
7.No I dont think Shay would go back in time because she learned so many lessons.
8.Everything is done for you and you cant be hurt unless you do something wrong.
    9. Tally did decide her own fate because she decided to see Peris and not wait 3 months.
    10. We depened on oil to drive and work all our basic machines. We would not survive that long if we didnt have oil.

  14. 1. I’ve never had a friend that abandoned me like Peris.
    2. At first, I hoped that Tally would get the operation, but now as I get farther into the book, I do not want her to get the operation. She seems happier being an ugly with David.
    3. Of course, I’ve paid more attention to someone because of their looks.
    4. She had to learn how to live without all the luxuries that she had at home and wouldn’t have at the Smoke.
    5. Yes, I would give up my ability to think independently for the pretty and rich lifestyle.
    6. Tally thought she was ugly, because she grew up thinking that way all her life. David thought she was beautiful.
    7. Yes, because Shay was really mad at Tally.
    8. Everything is handed to you in New Pretty Tow, unlike our cities.
    9. Tally decided her own fate, when she didn’t activate the pendant as soon as she got to the Smoke. Many other people decided her fate as well, such as Dr. Cable, who didn’t really give Tally a choice to whether or not she would go find Shay.
    10. If they took away oil from us now, we would have to find another source of energy. We wouldn’t have any transportation until we found another energy source.

  15. I had a friend like Peris, her name was Courtney she moved away in 3rd grade and i haven’t talked to her since January of 2013.

I did think that Tally would get the operation. I never thought that she wouldn’t get the operation.

I have never talked to someone just because they are pretty i talk to people on the way that the treat me.

I would never take away my ability to think and be independent just so that i could be pretty.

I don’t think that if Shay could go back in time that she would not have met Tally because Tally is like her Best Friend.

Yes there are differences between theirs and ours one of the differences is that they have hovercars and we don’t. They have big houses that can fit like a million people and we don’t.

  16. 1. No my friend aren’t mean.
    2. yes i want tally to get the operation and i still do because i want her and Peris to be pretty together.
    3. no i don’t really care about how people look i pay attention to a persons personality.
    4. it prepared her because Smoke is basically one big camp except you do hard work and labor sounds fun.
5 i don’t know i mean i might because my independent thinking get me in trouble and i mean hoe awesome would it be to be pretty and rich
    6.IDK…

  17. 1. Nope, but sadly, I’ve done that to someone. However…. I think it was mutual.

    2. I DID NOT want to Tally to get ANY of the operations. The Pretty operation I could deal with, but when she was stuck looking Special for the rest of her life, I was p–ed off! I know, I know, substance over looks or whatever. I just don’t think Specials are all that…er…. nice?

    3. Nope, if someone is an idiot, but they’re pretty, I still don’t listen to them. Because…. who would want to listen to a pretty idiot? I know, some people do and that’s why most politicians are good-looking (supposedly), but I think that’s bull. Why do you think JFK was elected? Because he was handsome!!! I mean, I consider myself average-looking, but I usually have something smart to say and if I don’t. Well, people, ugly OR pretty don’t listen to me.

    4. Well, I think that Tally started off her journey as a spoiled brat who had never done anything productive physically in her life. She really didn’t care about people until she met Shay, but that’s a different story. First of all, Tally started getting used to not having gourmet meals every day. And she got used to not having air conditioning or heat and not having a nice warm bed to sleep on. I mean, I feel like a hypocrite saying these things because I absolutely LOATHE camping (I’m one of those stay indoors people who read and play on their phone); however, in some ways, Tally did get somewhat prepared for the Smoke through her adventure in the Wild. Plus, I liked her adventure because she was by herself and she needed to learn how to be independent, because she seemed very needy and dependent on people.

5.Um…. NO. I think I’m more intelligent than my fellow peers for my age (Junior High), so I would never do anything like that. Junior High can be mostly about looks, but it doesn’t matter to me. As long as I have something brilliant to say, then I shouldn’t talk at all. That’s what I think of the operation. That once it’s done, they have become beautiful, unintelligent manikins that should act like manikins which includes the non-verbal part. So, I would never do that, but on the top of my head, I can think of some shallow low-lifes who would.

    6. David is the perfect boyfriend for he isn’t chauvinist and he also doesn’t care about looks. Based on the cover of Uglies, Tally wasn’t extremely unfortunate-looking, but she was plain-looking. However, to David, he saw her as someone who had something intelligent to say, not someone who was beautiful and that’s all that mattered. I absolutely adore the quote from Uglies when David said, “What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful.” I think that’s self-explanatory.

    7. No, even though they had their quarrels, they still loved each other. They still were best friends and they still had memorable moments that made them even closer. Shay could complain and say that Tally stole David from her, but eventually, Shay would get over it and they would become best friends again. I have plenty of friends that I fight with sometimes, but the option of going back in time and never meeting them seems very extreme. I don’t Shay or Tally would EVER do that.

    8. There are plenty of ways the Pretty society is healthier than our own and there are plenty of ways the Pretty society is not. In some ways, it is healthier because their image of beautiful is actually having muscle and meat on your bones. Whereas, in our world, pretty is defined as skinny and malnourished. However, the Pretty society isn’t all glitz and glamour for they seem to drink alcohol more often than us and that’s definitely NOT healthy. Both worlds are not perfect. There is no such thing as a Utopian society for sure.

    9. Tally didn’t have much say in her fate. The things she had say in was meeting Shay and deciding to not alert Special Circumstances, but still alerting them by throwing it in the fire. She had say in choosing to share the pills Maddy made, which caused her to be cured of the lesions, but killing Zane. Dr. Cable and plenty others had lots to say of her fate. Tally didn’t choose to be Pretty. Tally didn’t choose to be Special. Tally didn’t choose to be cured and Tally didn’t choose to go to Diego. Everything was done by force and Tally had no say in it for she didn’t know what she wanted. The lesions and her brain were utterly confused which caused her to believe Dr. Cable’s lies and caused her to believe David and caused her to believe Shay and everyone else. The lesions and confusion with Tally caused her to believe everyone but herself. That’s my response.

    10. Our world is VERY dependent on oil and gasoline. If it all just quit working or we just ran out, our world would collapse. I mean we have wind power, but most houses have gasoline run stoves and gasoline running cars. In some countries, the civilians bathe in oil for they have more oil than water! Crazy, but oil is actually very nourishing for your skin. Think of all of the transportation that wouldn’t work. Everyone would have to ride bikes or walk! We would have to engineer a device using wind power that could transport us places. I’m not very technological in engineering and all of that, but I’m sure there is someone who could make something like that. For real, America has produced Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. A hovercraft wouldn’t be that hard to come by if someone had strong creativity, imagination, and will to make it. Our world would just need someone to muster up enough courage to try and make things that would be helpful. If people were brave enough, I think our world wouldn’t be as bad as most people imagine.

Thanks for your time listening to my controversial banter.
    ~Charity~

And for all of you extreme Uglies fans.
“Thanks for being extremely nice-making. I give all of your responses milli-Helens!! These discussion questions were totally NOT bogus. They were totally BUBBLY!”
    ~Charity-la~

  18. I have a question for Scott Westerfeld, but I don’t think he would have enough time to actually read all 2,073 responses so far; however, I’ll just ask it. Scott Westerfeld, what century and decade do you think your book was set in? Were you going for the 22nd century or something like the 24th or 25th century? Were you venturing eons away like the 33rd century or somewhere are there? I’m very sorry if you already said what year it was set in, but I don’t think all of that would happen over a few centuries. I mean, would you? Think about how much we changed government wise over the last two centuries. Something THAT tremendous and large would have to happen around the 28th, 29th, or 30th century. I know we have gained loads of technology since the 18th century, but government wise, I don’t think we’ve had something so severe and life-changing like this. If you have the time, which I’m certain you don’t, answer me back and tell me what you think. All of the rules, regulations, new laws, and new leaders couldn’t have changed in three centuries. Unless, something SO life-altering took the world and flipped it upside down. If so, can you elaborate that stunning, life-changing moment?

PS. I’m not intentionally trying to sound like a jerk.

    Thanks a bunch.
    ~Charity~

PPS. I have some theories for how Palestine and Israel can share Jerusalem, but I haven’t found a way to get in touch with the United Nations where they would actually read my theories (theory, actually) and respond.

PPPS. Sorry, you probably don’t care about my theory for Palestine and Israel. I wonder if you actually care about global news.

PPPPS. Okay, that was really rude. Of course you care! Your Dystopian book is probably the closest book to being actually possible. Take Matched for instance. That book is DEFINITELY fiction! I don’t even see the need America would have to match people together. And it’s so dumb how Cassia, the main character, is the ONLY one who’s ever thought of cheating and getting with someone else. Come on, chauvinistic men and cads can’t just have 1 woman.

Sorry, I’m bantering again. This was supposed to be just a short question asking your thoughts. Bye. Again. For like the third time.

  19. Oh, and I’m very sorry Ally Condie. I’ve read the first two of the Matched series, but the last one was painfully awful. I’m sorry. I kind of wanted Cassia to get with Xander and who the heck is this Lee or Asian that gets with Xander? If Cassia can’t get with Xander at least put Indie with Xander. Oops…. sorry. I talk WAY too much. This is an Uglies blog.

    SORRY….
    ~Charity~

    I mean… Charity-la. You know…. since it’s…. um… you know…. er…. an… Uglies blog? Yeah….. Bye.

  20. Oh yeah. To everyone who’s waiting for the Uglies movie to come out. Yeah… that’s not going to happen in my foreseeable future. I think Scott Westerfeld is trying is hardest, but… yeah…. it’s not going to happen soon.
    ~Charity~

I want the movie just as bad. There’s this WONDERFUL Uglies Teaser Trailer by signingupagain. It’s on YouTube. If anyone knows the music that plays in the background of the video. PLEASE tell me!

  21. Very good website you have here but I was curious about if you knew
of any user discussion forums that cover the same topics discussed in this article?

I’d really like to be a part of community where I can get suggestions from other knowledgeable individuals that share the same interest. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Appreciate it!

  22. I really don’t also understand how I finished upward below, nonetheless considered this particular release was beneficial. I not really know whom you could be however definitely you are likely to a famed blog writer while you are certainly not witout a doubt. All the best!

  23. It is in reality a nice and helpful piece of info.
I’m satisfied that you shared this helpful info with us. Please stay us up to date like this. Thanks for sharing.

  24. ok yes to just about all of these questions and id like to say i admire your work verry much i am 13 years old i have a paper due in a few days on an author of my choice and i picked u i loved and still do love you books they are great ill make sure to leave credits ….thanks for your greatness

  25. This book was very interesting to me and i hope that i will get the chance to read the rest of the series…

1.As of myself, yes i have had a friend that once she moved away…she kinda forgot about me.I hope that it never happens again because it was very upsetting to find out.

2.At first, I did hope that Tally would be able to get the operation…that is until Maddy and Az explained what it did to you. After Maddy found a cure, i do now hope that Tally eventually gets the operation done,so even though it would change her for a little while, she would get HER mind back, instead of having what the doctors wanted her to have.

3.As of today, no i have not trusted or listened to someone more just because of the way they look. And i never will either, i believe that it isnt right to judge someone or somebody just based on the way they look. I have though not trusted someone because of the way they talk to me, or their negative attitude.

4.The journey to The Smoke prepared Tally for The Smoke because all of the hardships that she went through along the way strengthened her for The Smoke.

    5. I probably would not trade having a mind of my own for being happy, rich, healthy, and beautiful because i would rather have MY mind than the mind that Special Circumstances and the Operation Doctors want me to have.

6.I think that because of the fact that David was not raised into thinking that becoming Pretty, was the ultimate goal in life, and that if you were not Pretty, you were absolutely Ugly, he saw Tally as a beautiful girl,as Tally thought herself to be hideous.

    7. I f Shay had gone back into time and never met Tally, than Shay would have never turned Pretty and still gone to The Smoke, but Tally probably would have turned Pretty on her 16th birthday, and NEVER gone to The Smoke.

8.Differences between us and Pretties, is that in today`s real life, we have a mind of our own, and don`t separate ugly people, old people, pretty people, and in the middle people apart from each other. We also don`t have a lot of the technology that they have, that I know of. No, i do not think that they are healthier than today`s real life.

9.Tally decided her own fate to the extent of weather she really needed to do it, but to be honest, she really did not decide her own fate. Special Circumstances made her go to The Smoke to betray her friend Shay. Peris made her not come back to New Pretty Town, so she could come back when she was pretty. He also made her decide to actually go to The Smoke. Shay made her go to the Rusty Ruins, and then made her learn hoe to hover-board. I think that in the majority of this book, other people have told her what do to do and when to do it.

10.My life depends on gasoline and oil because, for instance, for me to conveniently go somewhere fast, i need gasoline to put into the car, or i need it to fire the grill, or heat things up. If it would just suddenly go away one day….than i think that it would not be so good for me.I would`nt be able to go anywhere far away or could`nt use my grill, or cant heat those specific things.Life would be disastrous.

This book was a very interesting book to read and I look forward to reading the rest of this series.

  27. What does “bubbly” mean and why some of the charecters add and “-la” so the end of the persons name? Ex: Tally-la

  28. Dear Scott Westerfeld-wa,

I am obsessed with the “Uglies” series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! P.P.S.: I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YOU, TALLY AND DAVID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. 1. Have you ever had a friend like Peris, who abandoned your friendship after they moved away?
-Not exactly. I’ve had friends move away but it was never like how Peris and Tally were. The difference there is that my friends never changed so much that I couldn’t relate to them anymore. But that has happened a few times just because people grow up and personalities change whether they move away or not.

    2. At first, did you hope Tally would get the operation? When did you change your mind? (Or did you?)
-I didn’t really know. I think I did when Tally really wanted it more than anything else in the world. She would get so upset and she couldn’t look in the mirror without staring at her frizzy hair or her squinty eyes, and that’s not healthy. I feel like self-worth and confidence is extremely important, and I encourage anyone to do whatever it takes to feel good about yourself, even if that means going under the knife. But then when she found out the truth about the operation and David showed her that she could be pretty without smart-plastics and brain lesions, I didn’t want her to.

    3. Have you ever found yourself trusting someone more or paying more attention to what they said not because they deserved it, but just because of their looks?
-This is sort of a hard question, only because I feel like everyone has once or twice. Even if it’s not necessarily trusting them but paying more attention to them based on their appearance. How do you normally pick friends? You find someone who’s style is close to yours or someone who’s hair you like a lot and you try to find something to talk about. Everyone does it.

    4. In what ways did Tally’s trip through the wild prepare her for what she learned in the Smoke?
-She learned how to make sacrifices, she discovered new things about the world instead of the city she was trapped inside for her entire life. Her mind sort of opened to new possibilities, like the rangers in the field of flowers, and she also realized how much she relied on the city.

    5. Would you give up your ability to think independently in exchange for being happy, beautiful, perpetually healthy, and rich?
-I feel like that probably comes with being famous. You make a bunch of money, enough to do whatever you want including getting cosmetic surgery, people want to know you and they love you before they’ve even met you. All of that fame and love and money could turn anyone into a bubblehead.

    6. How did David see Tally differently than she saw herself?
-He saw her for who she was as a person, where she saw herself only as who she could be if she were pretty. David really showed Tally humanity and love which she’d never seen before. In the ugly dorms, everyone was always calling each other by their ugly nicknames which were based on their worst feature. Tally was conditioned to hate herself since her last day as a littlie, and somehow David changed her way of thinking even after all that time. I don’t think that David’s a bad guy, and I feel bad for him in a way because of how Tally had to handle their last conversation before she became a special. But she was right: they had gone through too many new things without each other, and she found Zane. I like to think of David and Tally’s relationship as one that thirteen-year-olds would have. Although they both pretty mature, I feel like he didn’t know what he wanted. He bounced from Shay to Tally in such a short time and ultimately split their friendship. They also claimed to be in love, which although they spent pretty much every single day together for two months, that’s still only two months.

    7. If Shay could have gone back in time and never have met Tally, do you think she would?
-I think that Shay is very resentful towards Tally, even when she becomes Special. Tally betrayed the Smoke, is the reason why Shay became pretty in the first place, unintentionally stole David from her, stole Shay back from the city and brought her to the New Smoke for a few miserable nights, kind of stole Zane from her (if you remember in the beginning of Pretties, Shay was sort of flirting with Zane although he showed no real interest), didn’t share the pills with her and instead split them with Zane, went to the New Smoke with the other Crims but didn’t bring Shay although she tried (so I guess this one doesn’t really count as Tally’s wrongdoing but I’m sure Shay’s pretty pissed about it). I think that at the end of the day, Shay is thankful for everything Tally’s done. She thrives as a Special. She knows exactly who she is now, she’s not searching for some clique of bubbleheads or a rebellion cult in the unknown. Shay is actually the leader for once in her life, and I think she’s happy with where she is.

    8. Other than the pretty operation, what are the main differences between the pretty society and our own? (Are there any ways in which the pretty society is healthier than ours?)
-Of course there’s the differences in technology which overall impact society, but other than that, I feel that their world isn’t too different from ours. We favor good looks over achievements and personality. Children are conditioned to hate themselves thanks to magazines, television, etc. to buy into schemes. I think that of course they have the right idea about energy-saving and the health of the earth. I really love how everything in the books has little details thrown in that give you a glimpse into their world and how things work, like the solar panels and the hovercars, and with those things I feel like they had the right idea.

    9. To what extent did Tally decide her own fate, and how much did other people decide it for her?
-Tally definitely decided her fate on multiple occasions. Of course she only had two real options when she went out to take down the Smoke; Either stay ugly for life or go out and risk everything to help out Special Circumstances. Of course she could’ve chosen the first option, but that’s not the Tally that we all know and love. She chose to take the pills, she chose to run away a second time to the New Smoke, she chose Zane over David. The only thing she didn’t choose was to become Special. I think that Shay forced Tally to under the knife and become Special only as revenge. In Specials, Shay says that she’s always wanted Tally and herself to be on the same side. I feel like that’s another reason why she made Tally Special.

    10. The Rusty civilization collapsed because of its dependence on oil. In what ways is your lifestyle dependent on oil and gasoline? How easily would you survive if it all disappeared one day?
-When it comes down to it, money’s the main thing in everyone’s lives. If oil and gasoline were to just vanish overnight, everyone would be freaking out and what little is left would be beyond expensive. Personally, I’m learning how to drive, but I’m not dependent on it. Of course, I’d be upset because there’s no way I could see friends who live 30 mins. away and I wouldn’t be able to travel to any of the places I’d love to go but haven’t had the opportunity yet. This is really where I feel that the Pretty civilization is stronger than ours. They have the right idea in this area, but that’s mostly because they learned from the Rustys’ mistakes.

  30. I just finished specials and I am in awe as I was reading I felt happyness, sadness, anger and confusion along with tally. Her character development is incredible. I know your probably never going to read this but I think it would be really cool if you wrote another book in this world about tally and David’s time in the wild protecting the wild from the New System. also I’m really curious as to who it was that created the virus that destroyed the oil, if it was someone who wanted power or someone else. This is a really icy book and I hope this comment wasn’t totally bogus.

  31. I love your books! I have started speaking pretty as a joke to my friends who have read the book but, It seems to be getting to the point were we just add -la to the ends of our names or talk about how math was totally bogus. I scare myself sometimes with that. Im sorta a real life manga-head and I feel sad about it sorta now because I read the comments on one of your posts and people are afraid of Huge eyes and huge lips and a tiny nose. I naturally have those features and I do wear contacts to look more like a Manga-head or as we the (Rusties) now call it a real life doll. I think after reading far into this series you opened my eyes up to how it is for a whole society to be over obsessed with their looks (Which I sadly am too). Anyways I love your books and I beg you to make a movie out of this series! I am a writer myself and a huge Sci-fi lover.. One more thing before I go back to finishing reading Extra’s .. I want to know If tally has blue eyes for sure, And does Shay have green/brown eyes? I know they all had Special eyes after the operation but, what colors were they originally?

  32. 1)I have had one or two friends like Peris they moved away and we lost connection but the never betrayed me
2)At first i really wanted her to get operation and I thought it was all Shay’s fault then I really wanted her to stay with David and now since Maddy found a cure im sort of hoping it works so she can be pretty and have a mind of her own
3)Yes I have payed attention to someone just because they are cute and I think im a tiny bit quilty about it
4)I really dont know about that question in that part of the book I lost consentration
5)It is a 50/50 answer for that from me I wanna be pretty and rich I mean who doesnt but I wanna have a mind of my own im sure everyone agrees
6)David saw Tally different because her inside that is why he thought she was beautiful
7)I think if Shay was pretty should would never go back in time in the book she told Tally she was happy how she looked but if the pills worked and she was pretty and had a independant mind then I dont know and the same answer for if she was ugly
8)The difference between the world Tally is in and ours is tht they dont judge people from how they look and we arent forced to have operation
9)In the beginning of the book others decided her future then when she decided to stay in Smoke that was her choice
    10)I Dont Know
