Last week there was a short piece in MTV News’s Hollywood Crush last week about the Uglies movie. Let me quote it:
Industry sources have confirmed to MTV News exclusively that Screen Gems, in the wake of the success of its current release “Dear John,” is developing — and in fact, fast tracking (!) — a film version of “The Uglies” series.
While there haven’t been any decisions made regarding things like casting yet, we can tell you that our source said production of the movie is planned for later this year. That means we will all hopefully know soon enough who could be playing the beloved teen Tally Youngblood in the futuristic, meaningful tale about a dystopian society that places an incredible emphasis on looks.
Emphasis theirs. Here’s the rest.
In the words of my Hollywood agent, fast-tracking means, “it’s on the list of projects that they are hoping to make vs. the ones that will never see the light of day.” In other words, this is not a done deal. But it’s a lot better than being in that other, not-so-fast-tracked pile.
Now, some of you are no doubt asking about casting at this point. STOP! I’m the wrong person to ask. Trust me, if I hear anything I will tell you here on this blog, on FB, and on the Twitter machine. But in the meantime, I have nothing to do with casting movies.
If it were up to me, you would all get to play Tally for exactly three seconds of screen time. (And this would be why it’s not up to me.)
Plus, I doubt it’s as far along as this article makes it sound. Like, the casting isn’t going on right now. Probably.

I think a movie would be awesome, but at the same time, movies/shows based on books usually destroy my image of the characters in my head. I’m already frightened of what they’ll do with The Hunger Games.
I’m hoping that if they are going to start production that they pick actors/actresses that actually look like the characters description in the series and can act.
And I strongly hope they aren’t planning on squeezing three books into one movie.

I’ve also been thinking…Scott-la, your books are so PURE. As cool as a movie would be, all of your fans are strictly book fans, and we worship the characters the way we see them in our heads, versus people liking the movies and the actors. Same with the Hunger Games series and others…they are so purely BOOKS, a huge fan community and respect and love and everything just for the BOOKS, that I can’t help but think that a movie would most likely ruin all that.

I hope they make a movie…but if the mess it up…I’ll have to slap someone in Hollywood……..and by that I don’t mean go for a drive and slap a person when I get to the city, but actually slap the people responsible for the blasphemy of ruining another good book with a crappy movie…..unfortunately though…they would so slap me with a law suit -.- SO let’s hope it gets done right the first time!

was thinking that if people want to know these stories – read the books!

I’m trying to think of who I want for Tally, but I can’t. They need a fresh new face for Tally. And I want Mariah Buzolin for Shay!!! She looks how I pictures Shay so I think that would be awesome if they casted her. I don’t get why everyone wants a blonde for Shay. I mean, HELLO, in the book it says she has dark hair. Grow a brain people. And also I don’t get why everyone wants like really older actors/actresses to play 15/16 year olds. Geez. Oh and when/if they make the movie. They better not cram all of the books into one. Because that just wouldn’t work unless they made the movie like 10 hours long. OMG i’m so excited now, they better do it right. Uglies was just a fantastic book series. I hope they can make the movie almost as good as the book!!! Anyway, I can’t wait if it does come out. News on the movie is fantastic, regardless of how close it means they are to casting and producing and making your book a movie. It’d be very exciting to see it on screen! Kudos to you, Scott.

They had better pick an AMAZING actress for Tally. The series is really all about her psychology and how she grows/changes in her mind, so if they pick a lousy actress then it kind of ruins the whole thing. So I really hope they pick someone good

Congratulations Scott! So cool about the movie deal. Uglies is one of my favorite books so I’m excited–for you especially. At the same time, I’m a little sad–Hollywood always manages to eff-up my most beloved books. Which, really, I don’t know how it’s possible when they’ve already got these stories written for them–to perfection, might I add–and all they have to do is edit these books down to fit a movie script. But, for whatever reason, they decide to add crap that never happened–stuff that doesn’t even add anything to the storyline–while taking out important scenes that actually DO add to the original storyline. And they omit characters that are important to the story, or whatever–totally pisses me off.
I’m almost frightened to find out who they’ll cast as Tally, but based on recent casting trends I’d be shocked if it wasn’t Demi Lovato or any other craptastic Disney-fied ‘tween idol (I’ll totally lose it if they cast Miley Cyrus as Tally). And they’ll ugly her up by slapping some glasses on her OBVIOUSLY PRETTY FACE, maybe even put her hair up in a messy ponytail. Because: glasses + ponytail = ugly and frumpy.
Sorry, but Hollywood and I are not on good terms as of late (have you noticed how many truly terrible films have been released in the last few years?).
But, all my complaining aside, I actually can’t wait to see David in the flesh.
Anyway, Scott, I’m glad that the movie will (most likely?) be made since it will get more people to read the Uglies series and/or your other books. Because, unlike a lot of YA fiction being published these days, your books are actually good. You really are a talented author (not that you need anyone to tell you that, since you’re books are selling and all. I’m just saying).
Case in point: “What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful.”

They better be accurate… And I really don’t mind if the girls theycast are pretty, as long as while they’re uglies they don’t go to extremes to make them especially beautiful or especially ugly. Aka: the girls would not be concerned with makeup, straightening or curling hair, etc. because they know they’ll be beautiful eventually. They think it’s hopeless so they’re not worried about making themselves look good. Conversely, they shouldn’t make their hair super-frizzy or give them warts or in any way make them look especially ugly. They just need to look NORMAL. Like the average teenage girl off the street, minus makeup. Am I making sense?
And also I really reeeally want shay to have olive skin and dark hair like it’s described in the book. Otherwise I would be very sad. Oooh! And with pigtails! Shay has pigtails! But that’s a personal preference…
I sort of want an unknown cast for Tally… anyone with me on this? Actually, I think all major characters, like Shay, Tally, and David should be unknowns… it will help people form their own opinions. I don’t mind smaller parts (for example Dr. Cable) being well-known, as long as she isn’t given a bunch of extra screen time just because she’s famous.
But all in all, I’m excited! I don’t mind waiting if that’s what it takes to make it awesome. =D

Yeah no sorry kay-la I’m pretty sure I can’t let you have him. and to the rest of you Zane always annoyed me, I picture him like one of those super skinny kids who drinks and has like 20 ear/nose/lip piercings and dies his hair black and wears eye liner and such, but whatever not the point.
The point is there might be a movie coming out!! Now I agree with most people about how movies usually suck and are nowhere near as good as the books and such. BUT I think they might be able to pull this one off, Scott just has to be firm and tell the producers that if they don’t keep to the books he’ll take their heads off!
Also let’s for once have an actor who is the same age as the character they are playing, so since the filming probably won’t start until 2011 late 2010 they actors should probably be no older than a 1994 birthday. If they want to keep to the script! WHICH IF THEY DONT WE’LL HAVE PROBLEMS!!!
but those are just my thoughts…

Thank God! I was going mad wondering what was going to happen to this. I just hope that who ever they choose for Tally is the right one. And like many others have said, I hope they make a good movie, and not just decide to cramp all the books up into just one movie. Trust me I have seen that before, not very happy-making. I would hate to see soemthing like that happen to such an amazing story. And I trust that they will keep you in mind for every decision they make and keep you posted, so that then you can keep us posted on what is going on with it.

A lot of people have been saying that unknowns should play the major characters (Tally, Shay, David, etc.), and while that does hold a lot of merit, I’m not sure if it’s necessary. I mean, sure, it would allow people to form their own opinions of it, but I don’t think they have to be actors NO ONE has ever heard of. Maybe just not the A-list type. Sure, it would bring a lot of new fans to the movie, but…I don’t know, I guess it would take something away from the book’s purity. It’s truely like another world.

I seriously don’t care who plays who but I’m just trying to figure out how they’ll make all the props realistic enough. like if they’re just swinging a black thing from the ceiling, nobody will know it’s moggle. they need to have a moggle-point-of-view and they need to be able to make hoverboarding realistic. if Tally’s like “oh my gosh! I’m actually hoverboarding!!!” It’ll just be dumb; she needs to be a natural. and whoever’s making the movie needs to read the books first so it actually seems like the book. not they just heard what the books are about so they made a movie about it. I just wanna say that a lot of people just want to pick normal people instead of actresses for Tally, Shay and David. I don’t really agree there. I want unknowns, but they should still know how to act. If they just pick random people, or if they just pick people because they are the biggest fans, well, if they can’t act then it kind of defeats everything. Pick people who can act, but not people who are ultra-famous and all. Unknowns would be best by far, but then again… it’s Hollywood, so it’s doubtful. But don’t make the Uglies especially ugly, and don’t make them gorgeous. I’d say to choose someone nice looking, but not insanely beautiful, that way if they decide to do Pretties, they can exaggerate the prettiness. (And I agree, Bella has no character at all whatsoever. Worst. Protagonist. Ever.)
IMAX? That’d be awesome! Hoverboarding in IMAX would be sweet! And there’s riding over the water… and the roller coaster… and Tally jumping off the building… so awesome.

I know I shouldn’t, because its just a model, but the smoldered eyes and light brown, somewhat wild hair seemed so perfect for Tally – she just looked a little too old to be her. Back @Michal-Wa: I think that each cover portrays Tally interestingly, actually. And I think the “eye color” change on the Specials cover is just because all Specials have jet-black eyes – you can only see the brown of the model’s true eye color because of the contacts and lighting, I think. Plus, you have to look pretty close to see it. And absolutely, they need someone who can act.

Firstly, a HUGE congratulations to you Scott!
Despite all the doubts and stuff, it’s incredibly exciting to have the possibility of an Uglies movie, to begin with and have an even larger group of people being exposed to its awesomeness! Honestly, no matter how much I’m ‘enhh’ about Hollywood and/or other cinematic companies, it’d be absolutely amazing to see my favourite series on the big screen and I’m sure it will be for all your fans and yourself! So best of luck with the entire process!
But, being a fan, I do admit I’d really love for the ‘purity’ of Uglies – the spirit behind it – to be preserved, which seems to get harder when Hollywood or Disney or the big commercial companies have gotten a hold on anything ):
Either way, I hope they don’t rush the movie(s?

ok im not sure how i feel about Emily Deschanel (dr. brennen in bones) playing Dr.Cable, but its interesting! and I think the least of our worries should be about the special affects, look how manny fans Uglies has, this will not be a low budget movie, and even if it was going to be the film industry has good technology for this kinda stuff. our problem is messing up the story-line (hemph harry potter 6 hemph!!!)

This is so exciting! Defintely the special effects have to be perfect (think Harry Potter, instead of Twilight) and the actors should be unknowns, but good. Open auditions must be held! Or else how will you find the right unknown, and then everyone will have a chance. For the pretties and specials there has to be special effects like they did for Voldemort in Harry Potter. And Scott, you absolutely HAVE to be involved with every single part of everything that goes on about this! Also the settings have to be fantastic. The rusty ruins and the city must be perfect!
And the most important thing is that it HAS to be 4 movies. If it was all 4 books squished into one movie, we’d miss out on way too much!

I can’t even begin to describe how excited I am for this. I imagined Uglies as a movie even as I first read it, years ago.
I totally agree with most of you that the main characters like Tally, Shay, and David need to be unknowns, but more minor characters like Dr. Cable, Maddy, and Az should be famous. Also, I totally pictured Tally the whole way through as the girls on the covers (even if she does have brown eyes) it would be perfect if they could act. How come everyone keeps saying that Angelina Jolie should be Cable? I kind of think she’s hideous, and the person should be beautiful but scary. I know they’ll ruin her anyway, so it doesn’t matter. But I wonder how old she is actually supposed to be…(she’s my favorite character.)

Whoa, why are we talking about Zane already? We want them to do Uglies as one movie, right? We don’t want them sticking all the books into one movie (think Series of Unfortunate Events). What they’ll do is they’ll only work out the first movie, and IF they make enough money on it they’ll do Pretties. But we gotta get Uglies done first!! Also, they had better keep to the books!!
(But just so you know, IF they were to do Pretties, I hope they pick Logan Lerman as Zane! Unknowns for Tally, Shay and David, obviously. But yeah, what I meant was in most movies the “ugly” girl–before the amazing makeover, that is–is actually your regular run-of-the-mill pretty girl, and, in order to “fug-ify” her they just slap a pair of glasses on her face or put her hair in a “frumpy” ponytail. Sometimes both. (see: She’s All That, The Princess Diaries, Miss Congeniality, Grease, The House Bunny, Love Potion #9, and any other chick-flick that deals with makeovers).

I would love to see the uglies series on the big screen but I just don’t think it will be possible to do without actually surging people, like full on pretty-making surge, or a hell and a half of CG. ok so to whoever said that the actors need to look right like they do in the books, no. i mean the whole point of uglies is that they are changing and idk about you but i know that i never take in the charictar discriptions and think up my own charicter. so really everybody has their own ideas about what they should look like so the looks really dont matter its how they portray the charictar. if shay and tally are all happy go lucky the whole time its not going to work… at all the actors need to be good actors and such. your not going to find actors that look like the discriptions in the book and can act. only really important things matter, like tallys nose and shay being skinny. other than that it really doesnt matter.

I really loved the Uglies trilogy (made a lot of my friends read the book since it was so good:D) and I have always wanted it to get famous by someone making a great movie out of it, but now that I’ve read the comments above I’m not so sure about wanting it so much anymore since I hate how they make some movies according to books (for example The Golden Compass or Angels and Demons are now in my head even though there are tons of movies that were totally ruined by movies), but anyway it’s really great that someone has finally decided to make a movie out of it. To comment on some of the above comments – I think Shay should be brown haired just as in the novel and the characters should be some new people with sharp features. Does anyone know where can I find some more info about the Uglies movie? Oh and were any of the other novels made into movies, for example I just finished Leviathan, or Peeps..?

I understand what you all mean about having actors and randoms for the roles of Tally and Shay as uglies. You all must understand that sometimes the best actors are not pretty enough to get a part.
I hope this will be an opportunity for one of them, like it would be for me if I was in the right country, to show their talent.
Agreed with the “team” thing although for the record, I was never really a fan of david, even in the first book. he just seemed to different for Tally, unsuited. I think he would have been much better off with some one else. Zane was one of my favourite characters I cried when I read about his death…

Has any1 considered instead of making a movie about the uglies, if they made almost like a reality show, kind of like the show scrubs, then they’d b able to fit more details in without having to squish important details out of the movie… There soucl b a different sason for each movie.. Season 1: Uglies, Season 2: Pretties….ect. I like this idea but I don’t know how to make it matter, sum1 should help get this idea circulated and maybe the show could happen…

Anyways, here I am, 30 yrs old, have read Midnighters several times and now re-reading UgliesPrettiesSpecials saga… Just a quick word, I’m really really impressed with all the books by Mr Westerfeld that I read, used to work in Ottakar’s/Waterstone’s bookshop in UK, and was WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommending all of them to customers, many many customers

Anyways, I was just thinking about this movie, actually while re-reading Midnighters, how absolutely frickin cool it would be to make them into movies… Cos they’re SUCH great books, unlike anything I’ve ever read before, and I have read a lot.
Midnighters, I probably have a softer spot for, cos they were my first books by Scott, but UgliesPrettiesSpecials saga is way better. (sorry, Extras turned out my least fav…)

Oh holy hell, there are 209 comments of movie ecstatic readers.. My two cents involve the possibility of Specials as a movie – in particular the kiss sequence between Tally and Zane on the cliff – a fitting song for this moment or shortly afterwards with the nausea etc has been playing in my mind for days now. “I’ve got friends” by Manchester Orchestra, seems perfect for a Tally / Zane / Shay / Dr Cable montage.

And about the character’s looks and all, even tho ppl say in the book, Shay has dark hair, for some reason, I’ve always imagined her as blonde. “Shay” just sounds like a blonde! lol And for Tally, it should be brown hair and brown/blue eyes.

I have decided that from my possibilities I don’t know which is most probable, Suckiness or Awesomeness. But I do know this: This movie better rock or like Michelle said it means war. (Not literally of course… more like a fan-led rebelion against the director if they totally mess it up.) But I really hope they don’t mess it up. ok i am really pumped for this movie to come out and i think that they need to cast a real, down-to-earth girl for the part. I would like to be in it, but i know the chances of that are basically none, so i would like to say some characteristics that i think Tally’s actress should have:
brown hair (duh)
blue eyes
acne (she is after all an ugly)
insanely short or insanely tall (not the perfect height for someone her age)
someone who can act out a lot of different emotions, and
someone who can be made insanely beautiful for the Pretties movie, and insanely scary and beautiful for the Specials movie (since it would be totally bogus to have three different actresses)

Am i the only one who is devastated that this is happening?? I’m sorry Scott, but I really don’t want this to be another Harry Potter. Although I love Harry Potter, I know from personal experience, that once the movie comes out, people won’t want to read the books, just watch the movie. I know this, because I have been intending on reading the Harry Potter books for years, but yet I still haven’t. Also, I don’t want to lose my vision of the Uglies world, because I know once I see someone else’s interpretation of it, I will lose my own.
( This is my biggest fear! The only thing that would make me remotely happy about this, is if Emily Browning played Shay. But, I know, you’re not the one to ask about this. Sigh…

soory im a supper fan, own all the books, have a sighned copy of uglies and everything, read them all like 7 times and reading them again. ive also done 3 book reports on them and had to explain the the surge is not “getting thair skin peeled offf and almost killing them” beacause one of my some-odd freinds said that to my other freind and almost ruinded it for her, i explain it as ” extreme plastic surge and body-semical reshaping” much better driscription for the weak stomached in my opinion.

And I think that the movie hitting the big screen is totally bubbly-making. Tally-wa should be played by an actual 15-year-old who is good at acting. I’m not even a teenager and I liked this series. I think a movie, if handled well would be wonderful. Lately Hollywood has been “pro stretching things out”…
Series are popular in movies. And if I were a screen writer for this series I would definately try my hardest to have each individual book have its own movie.
I really think this would be better as a small tv mini series though. But the CG for the future technology might be expensive.
