I get a lot of fan mail that asks, “Will we ever see Tally again . . . ?”

Well, the answer is now official: yes.

Yes. Yes. Yes!

The book I’m writing at this very moment is called Extras. It’s set in the same future world as the Uglies trilogy. It’s Uglies Book 4, so to speak.

But trilogies only have three books, the pedants among you declare!

Okay, fine. Extras really isn’t the fourth book in the Uglies trilogy. And the Uglies trilogy isn’t actually a tetralogy—or quartet, if you prefer real words in English.

No, the Uglies trilogy is totally a trilogy.

Uglies, Pretties, and Specials are one story, the coming of age of Tally Youngblood. Or, as I half-jokingly refer to it, “The Making of an Eco-Terrorist!” And that story is done.

So what’s Extras? Is it just . . . extra?

Well, no. It’s not just extra, it’s more.

Warning: Mild spoilers begin here, and they’re non-mild if you haven’t read Specials yet.

Extras is set a couple of years after the “mind-rain,” a few earth-shattering months in which the whole world woke up. The cure has spread from city to city, and the pretty regime that kept humanity in a state of bubbleheadedness has ended. Boundless human creativity, new technologies, and old dangers* have been unleashed upon the world.

Culture is splintering, the cities becoming radically different from each other as each makes its own way into this strange and unpredictable future . . .

It’s Diego times a planet, and it’s a pretty interesting time to be fifteen.

That’s how old my protagonist is. That’s right, Tally Youngblood is not the viewpoint character of Extras! Deal with it. Sometimes one needs new fish to fry.

But will Tally be making a guest appearance? Well, it’s not like she retired at the end of Specials. But maybe I should let her answer:

Be careful with the world, or the next time we meet, it might get ugly.

  7. OMG!! I need to get the Extra’s book. I saw it in a book store today, but sadly had no money. I want it in paperback anyway. (Its easier to throw when I get mad at a character)

    Your books really need to become movies. That would be bubbly!!

  11. One question that I have to ask. Did you plan on writing a new book, because all of my favourite authors who had “trilogies” and “planed five book seirse” seem to have resently releiced books and my mom said that it was because they saw it as a huge money-making opp. since JK. Rowling just finnished off her last Harry Potter book. I just want to know. I think it’s awesome that there’s a new book though. I finnished the first three each in a week, WITH a whole bunch of homework each day.

  12. i think that if you are making another book you should have tally the main charactor again becasue she is much more bubbly. i also hope that i am not the only guy into this series becasue it seems that everyone else is a girl…..

I just finished Extras. i dont wanna spoil but the ending was soo (open ended?) why do u always leave me to think? i will not be able to sleep tonite..THANKS….but im glad for Tally in this book…but it was sorta a letdown. the book didnt end up as good as i would hav hoped. sorta…boring. but endin made me happy. is this it? i hope not. one more just to see if my 2 fav people get TRUELY together…

  14. I liked Extras, but it just wasn’t as good as the other 3 books. I thought the ending left to many questions unanswered. I also didn’t get why there was a different main character. I hope there is another book though because I really enjoy them.

  15. What have you done?!?!?!? It ended with specials, thats where it was supposed to end!!! The ending was good, although it left some questions, but it was enough! It would be alright if Tally was the main character in Extras…. but seriously, who is this “Aya” girl and why is she part of teh book?! We dont want new fish to fry!
    We almost don’t want to read this new one because it ruins the whole Tally theme. Next time you look for new fish, remember that sometimes the old one tastes just as good!

    I don’t think florian is gay, I just think he has too much free time on his hands to be posting so many comments…

  20. Oh my god, your books are fabulous!! Where do you come up with such great ideas? Anyway i love the series, it is wonderful. You are one of the few authors that i like, your writing style is so mindblowing and it sucks me right in. i plan to read all the books you have ever wrote, almost finished with my goal.

I read the first three books and I have started the fourth, but I have to say, reading the last chapter of Specials, i knew even if there was going to be a fourth book, it would not even begin to measure up to Specials. So much is going on in that book. Although i wish things could have been better, the ending is what makes the book great. It keeps me wondering. Scott Westerfeld is genius.He has such creativity that nobody could ever come up with a story like this one.Sometimes we need to escape our world and step into someone elses.

  23. omg there’s a 4th book, i haven’t read it yet but can’t wait til i do. today i read pretties and specials and was wondering if there was another book. i love the ending of specials where david and tally were together i hope they get back together like they were in the first book.i liked zane(even tho he died) but i LOVED david. so tally isn’t one of the main character oh well as long as she is in the book. Scott Westerfeld i LOVE your writing!!!!:D

  25. OMG I JUST FINISHED THE EXTRAS AND I LOVVVVVVVED IT!!!!!! PLEASE SAY THERE WILL BE ANOTHER BOOK!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! I loved the ending about Tally-wa and david!!!! i was so excited that was what i wondering the whole book! but i want to hear more! omg i really hope you make another book this is my favorite series ever i love it, all day i just read and i finished it in one day! I really hope you decide to make another book cuz i just cant get enough of this one

  26. I also just finished “Extras” and loved it as well!!! It was amazing and I hope you write another! I have to agree with the previous post about Zane. Why did you decide to kill him off? I thought he was a wonderful character and kind of fell in love with him myself. I’m not ashamed to say I cried when he died. What was the thinking behind killing him? To make way for David?

    I must also say i loved zane as well, well in the pretties i kinda didnt like him cuz he took David away from tally but then in the specials i started to LOVE ZANE
    and i cried when he died 🙁 but i still love david more and im so happy that him and tally-wa are together there just so bubbly together. Well not like bubbleheads but ya know. Please tell me there will be a 5th book because i lovee this series and it shouldnt end it!
    oh and update on when the movie will be out! im so excited!

Seriously you shoudl make a movie out of these books they are so amazing and i would just love to be able to see actors be able to reake these books.your books got me interested in reading again and you are a incredable author but seriouslyy pleasee ake this into a movie and keep writting on this book.     But i am still mad we are leaving the one and only character who hasn’t either started dispiscing life, gone emo/suicidal or dies (or all of the above).

    PS have you read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer? If not, u HAVE GOT TO READ IT!!!! MY all time fav book and the one that got me writing.

  47. Id love to read another book but I liked reading about Tally.
    I read the whole triology in 2 days but the end of Specials I read the start of Extras, I liked it if I knew what they were talking about. I had no clue whats so ever what was happening I knew their was 2 people chasing some girl down a drain and that was pretty much it. Plus I liked the way Specials could do almost what ever they want when ever they want, they were stronger faster, just funner to read about because it was so unreal.

I agree Twilight was a masterpiece one of my favorite books including the Inherihance Series with Eragon except its taking much to long for them to finish either series I finish books to fast, I get so hooked I can’t stop, people wonder why I fall asleep in class. I read the Uglies triology over two days I read from 5pm to 6am then got up at 2pm and read till 1am, and I finished the whole thing, now I have to wait with is torture. Im waiting for Inherihance, and I think Setting Dawn, and now this.
    Guess I should start on something else.
