Midnighters in Japan

About a year ago, I blogged about the wonderful Japanese cover of the first Midnighters book. Well, the other two in the series are available now, and are equally lovely.

Let’s take a look at all three:

What I love about these interpretations is how they’re simultaneously literal and surreal. All three use scenes directly from the book, but they also have a trippiness about them: the close up on the raindrops, the huge moon, the distended human figures.

Also, I like how the key settings—suburban, urban, and wild—show up across the covers. Location is everything in Midnighters, where the differences between city and wild are even more extreme than those in Uglies. So it’s nice to see those geographies reflected here.

And best of all are the odd touches of a different culture, like the water tower on the book 2 cover. Maybe it’s just me, but that tower seems more Okinawan than Oklahoman.

Altogether satisfying.

  1. I’m tired, I’m sore, I’m sunburned, I just came back from swim camp, and (oh no!) I’m leaving for vacation tomorrow on a flight that leaves a 4a.m. Help! Is anyone on now?

  2. ew….4am. well, i’ll be up at 5ish, that’s not quite as bad.
    where’d u get sunburned. i got it on my back while i was at the beach and had to sleep on my stomach for 2 nights.

  6. Hey, I’m on again. And I got sunburned when I went to the beach because I forgot to put sunscreen on my back. Now whenever something touches my back it hurts.

  7. Hey Abigial-wa, I just checked out your blog for the first time (I know, I know, I should have checked it earlier) and I think it’s really awesome. Well, bye for now anyone that might be on because I have to go pack for vacation. I might be on later, but I wouldn’t bet on it.     Anyway, I thought I would pull this moment aside to mention that this blog is about Mr. Scott Westerfeld – a lot of this chit chat has nothing to do with his writing, his books, anything relevant to the purpose of this blog.

    I know I have no place to say this, but I’m personally getting frustrated coming to this website when there are 1000+ posts about a bunch of stuff I personally don’t want to read about. I want to have and read intelligent conversations about the books and about ideas that Mr. Westerfeld has, and I’m sure that a good majority of the original viewers that have favorited this website hold that in mind as well.

    Please, if you’re going to chatter about senseless things while you’re bored to talk to your online friends, do it through facebook, myspace, or AIM – it’s growing tiring to have to sift through the nothing-comments and the something-comments. Just have some respect for the other readers. This wasn’t created for your own recreational conversation.

  19. I understand where you’re coming from, but there’s only so much you can say out of one topic. Ya know? And Scott hasn’t posted in a while after we were all talked out about that then we do tend to post “nothing” comments. It’s been like almost a week since Scott’s posted so he’ll probably post again soon, and you’ll notice that the comments will revert back to him.

  26. i think that scott westerfield should make a midnighters fourth book because the ending on the last one was a bit disapointing were jess is stuck in the blue time forever ather saving the world there should be a fourth were the gang save her
