How to Ditch Your Fairy Interview

So I think it’s time for another IMterview.

You may remember previous IMterviews, such as my discussion of Cycler with Lauren McLaughlin, and this chat with Robin Wasserman.

This one is a little closer to home, as it’s with my wife, Justine Larbalestier. We’ll be discussing her new book, How to Ditch Your Fairy.

Because we’re sitting next to each other as we IMed, it turned out a bit sillier than usual.

If you need catching up about what the book is about, here’s what I said back when it came out.

And here is the IMterview. (Okay, I’ll stop saying “IMterview” now, because it is lame.)

Here’s what the book looks like:

You can order HTDYF at Powell’s, Amazon, or Barnes and Noble.

  1. You haven’t had a drivers license since 1980?!?!?!! I think I like Justines writing schedule more than any other author I’ve met. PROCRASTINATORS UNITE (tomorrow). Hahaha. Sounds like an awesome book. I’m going to reserve it my library right NOW (or maybe later…) Hahahahahahahahahaha. 😀

  2. Oh an by the way, I convinced my little sister to read the Uglies series and *SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN’T READ SPECIALS* she cried when Zane died, so she and I had a little cry fest together. She loves them though. I convinced her to read all your other books too. 🙂 I’d love to hear about your next book.

  3. Lovely interview, you guys are funny. 😀 For real, you haven’t had a driver’s liscense since the ’80s? Well, that is a very magical hand you got, Scott-la. I need to look harder for HTDYF, I can’t find it at the bookstores.

  4. haha, a fun interview to read!
my fairy would allow me to fly…
or eat all the chocolate in the world and never gain a pound

  5. Oh… and in some of my stories that I write, some of my characters… they defy me! Like I am so sure they are going to do this… but they do that.
Lucky you, your chara not defying you.

    Maybe that’s my problem…

  6. I laughed when Justine said she makes things explode. That piece of advice is exactly what my friend did when she wrote for NaNoWriMo. It works well. 🙂

I must go find the book! It seems really interesting.

  7. I went to the local book store to try to get the book “Love is Hell” And it took like 10 min. for them to understand and find the book on their comp. data base.

Anywho. They are ordering a copy for me and then extras for other people like me. 🙂

  8. I’m reading ‘How to Ditch Your Fairy’ right now!
So, Justine, are all those unfamiliar words made-up-slang or real slang in some other part of the world?

  9. lol…..also, my friends would swear that i have a “being-in-tune” fairy cuz whenever i play something on an instrument it’s ALWAYS in tune, but I’d say that that’s just hard work….except that it’s been like that since the week of getting my instrument…

  10. havnt red the book, but it looks gudd! and your intervew was riviting, ( rivitings a wierd word!), me and my frends txt eachother wen weer in the same room all the time!

  11. Hee. That was amusing and enlightening. It’s nice to know more about the book from Justine’s point of view. And it’s amusing to read this chat. Very…scintillating.

And yes, I have yet to read How To Ditch Your Fairy…sadly.

  12. (a) Now I’m going to have the word IMterview stuck in my head all day. Thanks for that!

    (b) I know people have used this style of presentation for blog fragments before, but these interviews are really showing that it works as a way of presenting the back and forth. Do more. Do more. Take it on the road.

Shame it’s all one image, so won’t show up in search engines and so forth, but that’s a side-issue (ok, I’m an accessibility nut, but it’s a valid trade-off). Seriously, I like it.

  13. This was fantastic and a lot of fun. I particularly enjoyed Justine’s virtuous assertion that she is working on extending her paragon-like behaviour to the entire six weeks prior to deadline. Thanks for sharing it!

I enjoyed HTDYF a lot. It was interesting to read it having read Justine’s blog throughout the process of writing it.

You know, it’s odd but I can’t remember which I read first, Justine’s Magic trilogy or Scott’s Uglies series. I suspect they were read in close proximity to one another time-wise. It was before either series was finished, but I can’t think of when I ended up waiting for the last ones to come out. Hmm.

  14. I really want to read HTDYF. but i better finish the 4 books i already have. …..i really should stop putting too many books on hold at my library……
    oh well

    ~Aryll-wa

  15. How To Ditch Your Fairy sounds really good. It is now on my list of books to get, which is surprisingly short since I am very picky about books. I read the first two chapters in Borders today and it was good. I’ll have to get it next time I’m at the book store.

    clickmynameclickmynameclickmynameclickmynameclickmyname 😀

  16. okay, so my parents went to meet my teachers and it was really great cuz apparently it went really well and the teachers like my “out of the box” thinking style. they saw my science and my band teacher and all is well with the world.

  17. Haha, that was silly in the most perfect way. As cool as the word Sydneysider is I still like what I personally am; a Smithereen. My spell check does not like that being singular, hmm.

  18. u worded that perfectly, “that was silly in the most perfect way”, i wuld 100% agree, you just erned yourself a shiny gold satr!!!!

  19. Ha. Funny interview. You guys are *too* cute! *pinches scott-sama’s and Justine-sensei’s cheeks* I think I’ll read that book for my next reading assignment in English. Problem is, my teacher might consider it below 10th grade reading level. Ugh, that class is so annoying. Well, I think I deserve a break, because I’m finishing up The Turn of the Screw, which is horrid to get through, so maybe a nice fun Fairy Book is exactly what I need. 😉

  20. Ha. Good interview… I think I will have to go and order that book from amazon… if my dad lets me. I just got 60 dollars worth of Uglies books last week (even though I have already read the whole series over 4 times) and ordered 100 dollars worth of your other books yesterday… using his AMerican Express card… (yes, he was informed… but not about the cost until afterwards, arent I evil?)
I am making my sister read Midnighters right now, and now I am thinking that if she likes it she will try and touch my other SW books and get her grubby hands on them, so I am glaring and shifitly looking at my fiction bookcase alot.
Gist of that- good interview I will buy the book. Hehe ( :
    Mia-la

  21. ooh. This book sounds interesting. I need to get on reading it. But first I need to read the rest of your books, Scott-la, I’ve only read the Uglies Series, obviously. My boyfriend has me reading Halo books right now too since I just finished Extras. I’ll add this to my list. I doubt I would have even heard of it if it wasn’t for you scott-la! Thanks.

  22. i have 2go2 some really stupid&pointless “poinsettia party” 2pick up our poinsettias 4my sisters hockey team!!!! very stupid!! my parents r making me go2!!!!UGH!!! i would personally rather stay home & go on the computer!!!talk 2 u after school(TTYAS)!!!!!=D i hope i have a good day 2day!!!!
    laytah!!!=D

  23. That was Hilarious! I really want to get that book now! And new book? AWE$OME. Times TWO.

(This is because I’m inherently good.
    *Cough*)

    Amazing.

Reading a book interview is a great way to start the day!

  24. I’ll request to get both HTDYF and Bogus to Bubbly for my X’mas presents!! (And a deck of Tally-ho or Bicycle cards (Tally-ho! Hee hee!))

I agree about Justine’s comment on the specialised school. I currently attend a six-year-programme high school specializing in math and science. On one hand, I absolutely love my school and I can sorta cope with the more advanced stuff that they are giving. On the other, I can’t help but feel like I’m closing my options too early and I haven’t gotten all A’s in like forever, which is really sad.

I’m currently taking advantage of the end of year hols to finish the Justine’s Magic series. And a few other books. And mangas.
(Any VK, Deathnote, TsubasaRC or Xxxholic fans here?)

  25. I haven’t heard of any of those things (books) you’ve listed, but a specialized school sounds intense. (Math..cringe..)

  26. Jay-wa: Those are mangas, not books. And math is fun, really. Assuming you are referencing to my comments. If not then just ignore it.

  27. Jay-wa: YOU HAVE INSULTED MATH! I. AM. NOT. HAPPY! (j/k..kinda) Math is a fun class where you learn things (okay, so I haven’t learned something new since who knows when) that help you with life later on, and in my case, so that i can prove my crazy theories later on in life. On the plus side, my math teacher DOES light things on fire, but he gives us tons of homework (but i always get it done in class whereas other people are going for extra help) and so yeah. MATH. IS. FUN. And a specialized school sounds really fun…except having to chose between music and swimming would totally kill me.

  28. Oh, wow, Scott-la. That’s like the longest post you’ve ever written. But I guess you didn’t actually write most of it. Okay, so I’m being disloyal to you, the one and only Scott Westerfeld (please forgive me) because now Twilight is my favorite book. I know, now you all think I’m randomly normal and uninteresting because EVERYONE is in love with Twilight, but I am NOT NORMAL! Let me tell you that! I am totally abnormal because today I am dying inside. Why? Cuz katy-la was supposed to bring New Moon(the 2nd twilight book)to school today but she’s absent so now I have to wait the whole weekend to read it cuz it’s Friday which I would usually be happy about but now I’m sad because I can’t read for 2 DAYS because I can’t start another book cuz then it would take me twice as long to finish New Moon because if I started another book this weekend I would have to split my reading time in half so I have to wait ALL WEEKEND! *gasps for air* Oh, and all the libraries have New Moon, but, of course, they’re all CHECKED OUT! Luckily, I’m having a sleepover on Saturday to keep my mind off my sad predicament.

  29. amira-la: i m not in luv w/ twilight!!!!! i m in luv w/ the Uglies series (still) i m completely obsessed!!!!

  30. okay, so 2day i went 2 school(unlike lucky Andrea-la)…
    &my 1st hour is math.2day we did some wacky thing w/ number lines(which i don’t get)it was boring!!!
2nd hour is A.R.T., the subject i dread the most!!!1 time the art teacher called Jesus a hipee(@ a catholic school!!)…and another time she told us that she does not approve of Disney movies!!!okay, well 2day we r hoping she is finally going 2 b fired 4 her craziness!!!
3rd hour English, we wrote a letter 2 anybody, i chose my aunt and uncle that live in Massauchetts(FUN,not)
4th was Literature, we practiced 4 our scrooge play(i m a caroler in the beginning when scrooge yells @us 2 go away)Keri-la is Marhta Cratchit!!!! kind of fun
5th is lunch, but i forgot my lunch, so 4 the rest of the day i was starving!!!!!
6th hour was Science (i hate chemical bonding) i had a hard time translating the teachers words from scientific 2 english!!!
7th was Religion, where i just read the whole time=D
lastly was History, where we got lectured on women’s rights(boring)
…..well that was my VERY boring day, hope u ad a better 1!!!=D

  31. that was a very interseting interview i can’t wait for the one about your nwo book becuase i’m highly antisipatting it too bad it comes out in 09 that’s toooo long from here !!!

  32. thats cool…i wrote how my day was above Devan wa’s comment(u don’t have 2 read it), i can tell u it was like always, boring!!!=D

  33. yeah….i love Uglies, Harry Potter, ‘Nama Beach High, and the Bible. Bible is probably one of my favorites, but Harry Potter is always the first to come to mind.

  34. HOW CAN U LYK THE HARRY POTTER SERIES!?!?!? i red lyk the first 3, and part of the 4th and i never got into them!!! the movies r gud though…

  35. I think Harry Potter is an acquired taste, I read the first one, but found it confusing and exceedingly boring. And Ping-la, why do you hate Twilight?

(PS if you go to Robin Wasserman’s blog [www.robinwasserman.com/blog] the not link has Twilight scents. It’s the one she says she wouldn’t like but is worth checking out.)

  36. Hmm, the book sounds sort of interesting. I love faries and mermaids and that mythical stuff. In fact, I have a murel on my wall of a tree with faries and a lake that will eventually have mermaids in it. Yeah, it’s pretty neat.

  37. Sounds like an awesome book! I’ll have to look for it next time I’m at the library, or perhaps buy it after Christmas (I already have more than I’m going to actually get on my list, so I don’t really see any point in adding new stuff to it. Though there is probably a higher chance of my parents spending a little bit extra for a book, lol)

  38. BTW I just got into a new vampire series called The House of Night. There are four books so far out. I read the first one, called Marked, and I loved it! The only thing that is annoying the crap outa me is that it’s canadien or something and vampire is spelled vampyre. It’s soooo anoying to me! And there is alot of cussing. For good reason, though. Click on my name to go to the site for the series.

  39. Haha, I m looking at How to Ditch Your Fairy right now. it’s in between peeps and the Blue Fairy Book. Cool interview.

  40. sorry i left w/ out saying goodbye, but nobody was on!!! i had 2 go 2 that horribly stupid poinsettia party (even boringer than i thought it would b) turns out that i m a boring person!!!! i started talking 2 this 1 girl & she just got up &left &then i thought 2 myself how rude of her 2 leave me like that!!!! so i spent the past 2-3 hours staring into space, hoping i could b home.talking 2 u guys!!!!=D

Marisa-la:who were u talking about when u said”You two are hilarious???”

  41. okay, i m singing off now until 2morrow!!! i m soooo tired!!!well…g’night!!! TTYT(talk 2 u 2morrow) sweet dreams everybody!!!!=D

  42. I’m going to read it. I didn know what it was about at first and i was just like whatever but it shounds REALLY cool.

    Thanks for the IMterview, Scott!

  43. I”ll admit that HTDYF has been on my periphery and I haven’t *really* checked it out…but now I very, very much want to! I need to pay closer attention to some things, me thinks 😀

  44. The latest IMterview was so funny (I mean it was funnier than the last one). Now I really want “How to Ditch Your Fairy”.

Yesterday I got “Peeps” and I am loving it. All I need now is “So Yesterday” and “Last Days” to complete my collection of YA books by Scott (it’s so weird referring to him by just his first name).

Click my name (It would be nice if someone other than my best friend would comment on my blog) Click my name, please. 🙂

  45. I’m kind of over Harry Potter right now, because the phenomenon has been going on for so long, but I started having my dad read the series to me and kindergarten, and we finished the 7th book when I was in High School, so I kind of grew up with him, which was always pretty neat. Still, Harry Potter is better than Twilight, which just can’t compete. Today, my friend and I made Twilight t-shirts for when we go see the movie this weekend. Mine says “Team Get a Life” on the back and “I liked him better as Cedric” on the front. Hers says “So the girl and the vampire start going on a date… That sounds like the beginning of joke, doesn’t it?”

  46. yeah, should be interesting. We really wanted to find glow-in-the-dark pens, but Target didn’t have any. We’re also going to wear them for twin day during winter week at school. And there are some pretty rabid girls there… 😉

  47. Haha! Scott-sama, you make me smile. Justine seems really nice and funny 🙂

Note here that I bought HTDYF several weeks ago and loved it. 🙂

  48. My favorite books… it’s a tie between Uglies, Twilight, and Harry Potter.

Sigh, I’m so typical. But there IS reason Twilight is so popular.
    It’s good!

  49. Audrey-sensei, those shirts sound hilarious.

I personly don’t see why “Twilight” is popular. I think most people like it because their peers like it.

Click my name to check out my blog. 🙂 🙂

  50. Audrey-sensei: You don’t seem to like Twilight very much, so why are you going to go see the movie this weekend? Your shirt sounds really funny.
Dame Orchid: If people only read Twilight because their peers read it, then I just have one question: who started it?

Honestly, I don’t see why everyone likes it so much. My sister gave me an hour long recap of the first three books and about half of the fourth one, and it sounds LAME. And mushy, but that’s just me. People keep acting like it’s the new Harry Potter, but nothing will ever replace Harry Potter. By the way, I CANNOT WAIT FOR HBP! And the TWO DEATHLY HALLOWS MOVIES! The book was so good they had to make two movies for it. 😀

Click my name, please. And visit this site: http://www.dahliaseclecticmind.blogspot.com

  51. Actually, for a book, Twilight really isn’t that bad. For a phenomenon, however, it is. It isn’t literature, it’s marketing Targeted at teenage girls. And it works. The same plot is carried out through four books, but could be condensed into one, if so much time wasn’t spent stressing how pretty the male love interest was.

And yes, I’m seeing the movie a) because people who loved the book hated the movie, because it was different, so different might = better. I don’t know. b) even the actors in the movie hate Twilight fans, and Robert Pattinson himself gave an incredibly sarcastic interview too…Cosmogirl I think. and c) I’m just plain curious, and I have to admit, the previews were good. 😉

  52. Kate-la: thanks 4 saying i m not boring=D….but sometimes i can sort of b boring!!!!never ever ask me about the book i m reading!!!…that is the mistake she made, i could talk about books 4 hours &hours!!!!!well thnks anyway!!!!=D

    BTW: what’s up????

  53. ewwww!!! this 1 time i had a migrain(don’t know how 2 spell it) and my mom gave me medicine and about an hour later i barfed it up(it was purple)!!!!then i felt better!!!!

  54. when i was a littlie(he,he,he) i slept walk all the time, and 1 time my mom heard barfing noises &long story short i was sleep-barfing!!!!! it was all over the floor and sink and bathtub…everywhere exept the toilet!!!!! its kind of funny now, but was disgusting 4 a few years!!!!

  55. sorry i left w/ out saying goodbye, but nobody was on!!! i had 2 go 2 that horribly stupid poinsettia party (even boringer than i thought it would b) turns out that i m a boring person!!!! i started talking 2 this 1 girl & she just got up &left &then i thought 2 myself how rude of her 2 leave me like that!!!! so i spent the past 2-3 hours staring into space, hoping i could b home.talking 2 u guys!!!!=D

  56. this is a REALLY random question, but what do uglies wear??? what do u think a dorm uniform looks like???? its just one of those random thing that bugs me, like when somebody has black or dark brown eyebrows and bleeck blonde hair!!!=D

  57. on the top of my hair, its lighter than the bottom, so this 1 time i had my hair up so u cuuld c the bottom & about 3 people asked me if i dyed my hair!!!i said NOOOO, its just cool like that!!

  58. during the summer my hair got darker and every1 ought i died it, which got reely annoying reely fast cuz every1 kept asking me how it got darker, and im lyk IDK!!!

  59. i m kinda bored!!…..i m home w/ just my brother cause everybody else(my sister &parents)went 2 Brianna’s(my sister) basketball game!!!!BORING!!!

  60. this is a REALLY random question, but what do uglies wear??? what do u think a dorm uniform looks like???? its just one of those random thing that bugs me, like when somebody has black or dark brown eyebrows and bleeck blonde hair!!!=D
    anybody have an idea??

  61. why don’t u get snowdays Andrea-la???
Kate-la: how do u never get snow???

these r the questions that haunt me!!!LOL,jk

  62. ohhhhh, well i Livonia we have actually about 5 days we can take as snowdays, if we don’t use them we get out of school earlier @ the end of the year!!!

  63. Haha, the “IMterview” with your wife made me laugh. I have a completely random question though…Why don’t you and your wife share a last name? You’ve probably had to answer this question before but I’m curious 😛

    P.S. (: I love your Uglies Series!

  64. I think they don’t share last names ’cause then Justine’s fans might get confused. But that’s just a guess.

Ashley-wa: I think they’re dorm uniforms are ugly. (ha ha) But like I saw (in my head) different dorms wearing different colors. Mostly plain besides a color stripe.

I’m sorry you guys are sick. Bleh. Snow on weekends is kind of bogus but hopefully it’ll heat up, melt some snow then re-freeze and they’re’ll be ice everywhere and not be safe to drive.
    Hooray!

  65. Jay-wa: i have 2 wear a uniform 4 school& it is the ugliest thing ever!!!! it a green skirt w/red plaid on it(each catholic school in our area has different colors on their skirt)….and a white cotton polo-ish shirt w/ some type of elastic band on the bottom so we don’t have 2 tuck it into our skirts!!!!EWWWW!!!! isn’t it disgusting???? and the 8th grade(my grade) gets sweatshirts that we can wear w/ our uniform &girls have 2 wear knee high socks either green red or white!!!!to top it all off u can only wear your hair in a ponytail or down(nothing extreme or u have 2 go home)…..and oh yeah we have 2 wear certain shoes 2, no heels over about 1/3 of an inch!!!!!DOESN’T MY UNIFORM SUCK????

  66. no way, shoes have 2 b “apropriot”(idk how 2 spell 2day)…or u get sent home& yes my school is crazy!!!!1 time i did get sent home because i didn’t wear nylons w/ my black pants & my toes were showing*gasp*!!!!it was horrible!!!

  67. Holy crap. I kind of want a dress code, but that’s because the girls at my school are…uh several not nice words and look trashy. So it could be worse. At least most people at your school won’t be trashy, and neither will you!

  68. u can’t bedazzle(nothing extreme)that would be considered extreme!!!! in the summer when me &my friends were@ the spree we saw some girls from our school dressing as u would say “trashy”& sever other discriptive words!!!

  69. Hey, at least your teachers attempt to protect you. Try. But if you were like “I only have bedazzled shoes!” what would they do?

  70. well….if u only had bedazzled shoes….ummm @my school they would probably expell u if u didn’t have normal shoes in like a week!!!(harsh) people @my school don’t think fake diamonds r cool, they would probably make fun of u(i would b ur friend tho)….u c i go 2 a school that u pretty much have 2 b @ least upper middle class 2 afford*$15,000 a month per child*(not a cheap school)…..so yeah, most people @my school r stuck up brats that make fun of u if you don’t wear the right clothes brands(Abercrombie, Hollister, or Nordstrom!!no exeptions) which i wear, but not cause i care what they think of me cause they already think i m a loser(i like 2 talk about books….alot)

  71. Books are good, and if they think intelligent people are losers then..uhm..well okay then. And wow 15,000 a MONTH. No way. Danngggg. How can you wear abercrombie and hollister if you have to wear uniforms…?

  72. well….sometimes we have dress-down days where u can where all ur designer t shirts &jeans or Juicy(couture) sweats(my BFF Anna-la has a DKNY goose down coat she wears 2 school everyday) actually my parents pay more than 15,000 cause there r 3 of us that go 2 that school!!!!

  73. Personally, I like JCPenny, hottopic (for the band shirts), Claires, Meijers, Wal*Mart, thrift shops, vanity, forever 21, Charlotte Russe.
All (mostly) Low profile places, that aren’t totally expensive.

  74. My preferences (while we’re sharing) are H&M, American Eagle, Nordstrom Lucky, anything I can’t afford, and thrift stores and boutiques, because they tend to have really cute things. I like kind of preppy clothes, but I don’t judge people based on their label. I do kind of judge people based on how cute their clothes are, but don’t we all? 😉

  75. I think there is like ‘universal cute’. Sadly, Ashley-wa’s uniform doesn’t fall under that. (H&M?) but yeah. And generally at thrift shops and boutiques, people won’t have what you have.

  76. my uniform is 100% schoolbells(uniform store)..and cotton(pretty expensive cotten) as for my parents, my mom doesn’t work(stay @ home mother)my dad has a high position @Ford motor company(he didn’t get a buyout when 95% of the company did*no joke*)my mom won’t tell me how much he makes, i have asked b4!!!!=D

  77. while we r disgussing clothes, u know Anna? well….here r some of her other designer things!!!
*$150 from her parents every time she goes shopping
*Juicy Couture hat, gloves, and scarf set
    *an itouch
    *blackberry pearl
    *all chanel cosmetics
    *3 Dooney&Bourke purses
this list could go awn 4ever, but i will stop there talking about my bratty friends!!!!!

  78. oh my gosh….you seriously pay that much for school? wow. I go to private school, but it’s nowhere near that much….that’s like, SJR expensive (SJR as in the most expensive private school in my city) or more. yeah…i kinda don’t really give a flying fig about clothes, ummm, i mostly wear…actually, i can’t remember what i wear….lol….(sorry, i just don’t know these things). I’ll wear it if it’s black…ummm….I like to wear either black or really bright clothes…no inbetween….ummm….brand names are stupid, to me…..

  79. also, just try to bend the rules for your school dresscode….i mean, are there rules that you can’t wear socks over your shoes? if ya wanna break unnofficial rules, you’ve gotta get outside the box….such as that you could tie your hair in a ponytail with a really crazy rubberband….or you could put in multicolored hair extensions (cuz then you wouldn’t be dying your hair or wearing a hat)…there’s lots of things you can do without breaking the rules!

  80. I hate it so much when books I want are in hardback. I started reading it in the store, fell in love, turned it over, and put it back. Dx
Damn horrible economy leaving me with with money-strict adult supervisors.

  81. we do pay alot 4 school &that means i don’t always get whatever i want, unlike some other people i know….actually my parents NEVER buy me clothes, my nana does that!!! i luv my nana!!!!every spring she takes me and my sister spring shopping, we each get about $300 4 clothes and shoes!!!! i am not used 2 getting everything i want tho!!!! some people @ my school actually do break the rules, they wear pink or polka-dot headbands(u r only supposed 2 wear blue)there is actually a like 200page handbook w/ all the STUPID rules of my school written in it!!!

  82. actually, me &my friend Keri r the only people i know @my school who aern’t total brats!!!! i actually just realized how strict& expensive my school is!!!! my school won the school of the year or something last year 4 my area!!!!

  83. Jay-wa: If you ever get a chance to go to an H&M store, do. All the clothes look *super* high end (well, most of them, anyway) and fashion forward, but they are SO CHEAP! It’s amazing.

Which brings me to my question, Ashley-wa: I could care less what Uglies wear. What do Pretties wear??? Surely, the fashion of the world has changed in the interim of 300 years, I mean think of the clothes people wore in the 1700’s! 😉

  84. my school won an award not last year, but the year before, cuz our musical rocked so much! we got money for the music program which means we got new music stands! i was really excited. yeah. i don’t usually get EVERYTHING i want, but for Christmas i’m hoping that i’ll get a clarinet mouthpiece….a nice one, too! i know, i know, i’m a music nerd asking for a clarinet mouthpiece for Christmas (not even an instrument, a mouthpiece) but whatever. i mean, i’m not like everyone else asking for cell phones, ipods, or new clothes….I don’t like any of those…well, except ipods, but then again, they’re IPODS! but i’d rather be making music than listening.

  85. Andrea-la:i have no idea what the pretties wear!!!! maybe they wear like purple tights w/ black micro-mini skirts & blue leg warmers(i actually saw some Japanese lady wearing this @Disney World!!!!) or maybe thay wear normal fashion(which i doubt)
my school SUCKS @music we got an accademic award!!!! ex:every year our school’s band has a concert(next week)the whole school has 2 go!!!!and every year the music is sooooo horible that peoples ears start 2 bleed(jk, but i do plug my ears 4 as long as i can) if your school’s band is any better than mine(which most bands r) i wish i could hear it!!!!instead of ear drum-breaking music that my school has!!!!=D

    OMG!!!it’s 9:24am @my house & i have 2 go 2 my cousin’s b-day party which starts @10:00am (INSANITY) its ice skating…..G2G, TTYL, laytah, bye,bye=D

  86. Audrey-sensi:i have no idea what the pretties wear!!!! maybe they wear like purple tights w/ black micro-mini skirts & blue leg warmers(i actually saw some Japanese lady wearing this @Disney World!!!!) or maybe thay wear normal fashion(which i doubt) people @my school really care where u got ur clothes from the 1st thing they will ask u is “is that from Abercrombie”if it looks like it is or “is that from Hollister” if it looks like it!!! if it doesn’t look like its fom a “cool” store, they might ask u where its from then go over 2 their bratty clique and laugh @u!!!!it hasn’t happened 2 me, but it always happens 2 this girl Heather!!!okay, G2G=D

    SORRY ANDREA-LA I DIDN’T MEAN 2 WRITE THIS 2 U!!!!

  87. ok, so i was meaning to ask what they wear(uglies+) but i forgot that when i was on the Bougus to Bubbly entry
so i never got to know
and i didnt get my name in=.[

  88. 2day i was@ my cousin’s 7th b-day party& of course i was reading!!!! then this crowd of littlies comes over 2 me….and this 1littlie called me a nerd, then a loser then a wierdo& i m like thanks!!!! then they left!!! how rude!!!

  89. Ugg that is rude….. i totally know how you feel Ashley-wa, one time i lost my flip flop in the hall way and i screamed “My shoe” and this tiny 6th grader started to mock me… it was horrible, i mean when i was in sixth grade i was totally afraid of 8th graders mostly bc my sister was in 8th though

  90. You know, I bet Pretties wear barely any clothes. Like, only little bikini things and super short dresses and really revealing stuff because their bodies are gorgeous, global warming makes the weather hotter, and if you look at clothing throughout history, we just keep getting racier and racier… 😉

  91. Audrey-sensi:i have no idea what the pretties wear!!!! maybe they wear like purple tights w/ black micro-mini skirts & blue leg warmers(i actually saw some Japanese lady wearing this @Disney World!!!!) or maybe thay wear normal fashion(which i doubt) our night is probably not the same time though, cause @my house right now, its 6:57pm!!!

  92. G2G2 school!!!UGH!!!wish i didn’t have school 2day, cause i couldn’t fall asleep last night till about 2:00am!!!!

  93. I came back^^
    HIIIIIIIII
    *waves arms*
    Cool interview^^
the sucky thing is, WHEN THE HECK DOES IT COME OUT IN SWITZERLAND???

    -x-
My my. American point-of-view about H&M. H&M has sucky quality. And SO CHEAP? Ha. Ha. Ha.
It’s SO EASY to spend over 100bucks over there. Which is why I avoid it.
I’ll have you know that in CH (Confédération Helvétique, AKA Switzerland), H&M is like a whatever-ish store, like GAP or Target.

  95. for the snow-day topic:
I don’t think I ever had a snowday in my life. We get snow (duh, Sake-wa, I live in CH) but not snowdays unless snow is like over half a meter high (~3 feet)

  96. I’ll stop in H&M sometime to check it out. (although i’m not really sure there’s even one in michigan…) I think the Pretties (my friend was like there’s a ton of H&Ms in michigan.) wore bogus clothes, because they had to be recyclable and didn’t hold up well when they went in the wild. Dull colours maybe.

For history class we’re researching countries, I wanted Canada sooooo bad. I tried to trade, but the kid who had it, didn’t want it btw, is a jerk! (main export:SYRUP!!lol)
I got Spain, which so far is cool.
Hope we have a snow day tomorrow!!

  97. If any one lives in Spain on here, what’s something people travel to visit alot? Any help is appriciated.

  98. Jay-wa, i live in Michigan(OMG) & there is a big 1@ Twelve Oaks mall in Novi!!! i have been there b4, my mom shops there, but my size 10slim(child) in pants& like 8-10 in shirts there is no way any of the stuff they sell there could fit me!!!!

  99. Wonderful interview! I will have to get my hands on a copy of How to Ditch Your Fairy.

I heard that you and Justine dared John (Green) to stand on a table for $5,000 to the charity of his choice. Well, I guess you two will be giving a wonderful gift to some great organizations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWjYcWoaSbI

Donating money and helping conquer fears, now that’s a good combination.

  100. ahh!
    thanks scott.
    i loved this book.
    😀

and this interview made me chuckle to myself…. making me look like a moron.
    :]

    ugh.
for a while, i couldnt find the book, but it magically appeared one day when i actually have the money for it.
    maybe i have a things-you-like-wont-appear-until-you-have-the-money-for-them fairy.

  101. Wow. I’m so getting this book!
    And I’m an aspiring writer.
    (Totally bubbly-making, right?)
I’ll try my hardest to be persistent. XD
It could be hard since I’m a fellow
    procrastinator.

  102. Hah. Great interview…. made me laugh. I’m getting this book soon now. Like maybe for Christmas?? Whatever. Soon.

  103. -600 million years later….-

Jay-wa, I don’t like Twilight because I read the 4th book and realized the series sucked. But now everyone is reading it! My best friend, my best friend’s teacher, a kid in my Math Class.

Though, I’m glad my best friend is reading it. I’m always reading, and I think I’ve rubbed off on her, because now she reads more.

  104. Great interview, it made me chuckle. And on an even better note (for your wife) I have to go out and buy the book! (My library doesn’t have it yet.) Luckily I have a Barns and Noble gift card that I haven’t used yet. 😀

  105. sounds like an awsome book~~!!! oh by the way… today at school we were voting for some book choise awards or best book awards or something, it was like a big thing though i don’t remember… but anyways… uglies was one of the nominees ( don’t think i spelt that right) and i voted for uglies! cuz it was really, really good.

  106. wow are you a guy skylar-la? Sry im so rude but if you are, thats fawesome!! If not, your name got me and i apologize… But youre still awesome :] lol

  107. Hiya! My name is Chrissy-wa and I have the book “How To Ditch Your Fairy” and I love it ssssooo much. I have a Good Story fairy(In case you don’t know this means that even when bad things happen to me this fairy will turn it into a great idea and I will always have a great story idea). I just love this book and you guys are hilarious =]

  108. Since were on the subject of schools:My school(Sir Samuel Steele Public School;more commonly known as Sir Sam or Sir Sam Steele) is actually not that strict. And we do not have to wear uniforms, and although there are some clothing rules(No Belly Tops or other inappropriate clothing and shirt must meat pants and Shorts and skirts have to be as long as your fingertips when you hold at your sides) we can pretty much wear whatever we want. And my Good Story Fairy sure makes it easy to write a good story for a school assignment =] Also our school is named after the Mountie dude named Sir Samuel Steele, witch is so doos =] I love my school and think it is more doos then all of your schools combined XD

  109. And since we are on the subject of clothing stores: I like sores like The Gap,Old Navy.Hot Topic etc. Also I think H&W is doos, too.

  110. Hi again! lol. I have started a story and here is what I have done of it(it is called Hikji): “I was sitting on my front porch glumly when I saw someone coming up the drive. I didn’t recognize the person until he got closer. “Steffi!” I said greeting him. “Hey Chrissy!” he said back, sitting on the porch beside me. I have a Good Story fairy. I am 13 years old and I have a Good Story fairy. Steffi has a Get-Out-Of-Trouble fairy and is also 13. I started frowning. I hate school. But it was just as well that I have a Good Story fairy because I love to write story’s. “Why are you frowning?” Steffi asked me. “Oh” I said “Just thinking”. “About what?” he asked. I knew he was trying to taunt me…but it was working. “Just about things that worry me” I replied. Steffi laughed and said “I think you should have a worry fairy!”. “Worry fairy’s are supposed to take away your worries” I said “not give you more worries”. “Well then let me be your worry fairy” he said “and take away all your worries”. With that he took a hand and smoothed out my frown lines and pulled me into a kiss. I indulged in it for a few seconds, then pulled away. “Don’t you like kissing?” Steffi asked. “No” I said “I love kissing and I love you but….” my voice trailed off in a feeble attempt to say what I mean. “The rules” Steffi finished for me “I know Chrissy,I know. If you don’t want to, then…”. “No!” I said standing up and cutting him off “I do want to. I love you Steffi. You know that. But we have to fallow the rules.”. “I have a Get-Out-Of-Trouble fairy, remember?” Steffi said “So we won’t get demerits. And besides, I thought you loved me like a brother and nothing more.”. “But I love you more then a brother” I insisted “I really, really do”. Steffi sat there for a few moments, just looking at me. I loved how he looked at me. It was like I was a goddess and he couldn’t keep his eyes off me. His blue eyes sparkled in the sunlight and he curly hair blew in the wind like a sea on a summers day. I sat back down. I was concentrating on my early life:before Steffi, before my Good Story fairy, before moving to New Avalon. It was very hard to remember but if I concentrated hard enough some of it came back to me. Steffi kissed me on the lips, disturbing my concentration. “You distracted me” I said after we had stopped kissing. “Oops” he said while he kissed me greedily. After we stopped kissing I checked my watch. “Fairy Dung” I muttered under my breath “were going to be late for school”. With that we ran down the driveway and towards New Avalon High School. He raced in the double doors at the entrance and raced towards the history room were our first class was. We slipped quietly into our seats and because of Steffi’s fairy we didn’t get a demerit for being late. “Now class” Mr. Demetrius was saying “for todays history class you will be writing a story about the earth”. I relaxed at once. No need to fret about writing a story for class when you have a Good Story fairy on your side. When I was sure Mr. Demetrius wasn’t giving out any more assignments and was just rambling I tuned out. I was thinking about Steffi and how we were boyfriend and girlfriend and how my Good Story fairy would let me ace this assignment and how tomorrow was Saturday and how much I loved the weekend. BBRRIINNGG. The school bell rang for the end of class and I hurried out of class itching to get to cricket. Steffi fallowed behind me. “What class do you have?” he asked. “Cricket” I said. “Oh” Steffi said “Cool. I have math. But I’ll see you in Tennis”. “Yep” I said “Bye”. “Bye” he said as he ducked into the classroom. Fairy Dung. I’m going to be late for class. I walked really fast without running(running in school outside of sports will get you a demerit) and made it to cricket just as the bell rang. Whew. We played cricket and then I headed off to tennis. We played tennis and then headed off to lunch. I sat with Steffi during lunch and we talked. “Hey,what are you doing tonight?” Steffi asked me. “nothing” I said “why?”. “Because” Steffi said “I was wondering if we could,ya know,go out on a date?”. “doos” I said smiling at him “How ’bout you come to my house around 7:00, okay?”. “Okay” Steffi said. The bell rang and me and Steffi headed for our last class. After the bell rang for the end of school I was the first one out. I raced home. Once I was home I did my homework and sooner then soon the doorbell rang. “hi” Steffi said “Ready to go my lady?”. “Readier then ready” I said. “doos” he said smiling. He got out a gold ring with a little diamond on the top. “It’s fourteen carrot gold” Steffi said as he handed to me “I hope you like it”. “Like it?” I said “I love it”. For the date I was wearing a black dress, Black Platform shoes, a cross necklace, the ring that Steffi gave me and my hair was hanging loose. “You look gorgeous” Steffi said. “Thanks” I said back “Thanks a lot”. “Close your eyes” Steffi instructed me. I did and I could hear my shoes Click-clacking on the marble outside as Steffi lead me along.”

  111. hi! My name is Violetta but you can call me Vi. I love basketball and have a Shot-Blocking fairy. Also(like Zoey from Zoey 101) I wear my house key around my neck because I always forget it at home. I am 11 years old.

  112. Quite funny how you talk to each other. Scott, you remind me of a friend. You both have the same personalities. Hahaha I like this.

  113. for the vast recollect, but I’m real dotty the new Zune, and plan this, as recovered as the fantabulous reviews several else group jazz scripted, testament supply you terminate if it’s the rightist for you.

  114. The only thing I can say is… YOU GUYS ARE SOOO CUTE! And this book sounds so amazing! Btw, I saw Justine Larbalestier’s Liar in the library the other day! I didn’t realise it was your wife, Scott Westerfeld (Yes, I have done my fair share of cyber stalking). I JUST LOVE YOUR BOOKS. I admit I haven’t read Leviathan but I will read it when my exams are over! Your books are so happy-making ^-^
